BLOOD SWEAT AND GEARS IN BIKETOBERFEST–Memorial Chopper to be unveiled during Biketoberfest 2005: Fallen soldier PFC Brandon Sapp memorial chopper arrived at Choppers Inc. in Melbourne,Fl. on Wednesday. The custom built chopper was started by his father to keep his son’s dream alive, but it was more than he could handle. He put out a call for help in completing the chopper and got a little more than he had expected.
Chopper Kingpin Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. agreed to finishing the custom chopper. Biker-build off winner Billy Lane picked up the chopper from the home of John Sapp and will have the custom motorcycle completed for unveiling during Biketober at Destination Daytona. MERCHANTS REVVING UP HIRING FOR BIKETOBERFEST–DAYTONA BEACH — Bob Thompson stopped by Choppers World during Bike Week in March, looking for parts, and ended up working there part-time.Thompson, a retired financial consultant, is still there, but right now he’s working more hours to help get the shop ready for Biketoberfest.He is just one of the many workers businesses depend on before and during the four-day event slated for Oct. 20 to 23 to handle the increased business and crowds.
As of last week, officials with the Workforce Development Board Center of Business Excellence had received requests for 90 workers for Biketoberfest.The jobs, paying between $7 and $8 an hour, were for such positions as lot attendant, greeter and doorman, said Sharon Warriner, spokeswoman for the agency.
“That isn’t to say there aren’t more (jobs) coming,” Warriner said.
Maryann Terrone, spokeswomen for Kelly Services Inc., said her firm expects to get some requests, but, as of Wednesday, there had been only a few.The workers who fill the jobs fall into various categories. Besides the unemployed, some are folks who take time off during special events to earn extra money as well as those who just like being in the thick of the events.Merchants like Tom Guest depend on them. For most of the year Guest, owner of Choppers World, employs only two-part-time workers in his Main Street store.But, during Bike Week and Biketobefest, his employment roll swells.
“Right now, I have 13 or 14 timecards in my rack,” Guest said last week, adding that number will swell by the time Biketoberfest officially kicks off.
“Everyone over here does that,” Guest said, referring to Main Street merchants bringing in additional staff.Guest said he expects to bring in a half-dozen workers each day until then to help with inventory and other duties in preparation for the main event. “I don’t work all of the people each day,” he explained.
Karen Gehris, owner of the Boot Hill Saloons in Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach, said she also hires extra staff for Biketoberfest, even though it is only four days. Gehris said she brings in just as many staffers for both biker events.Some businesses, however, turn to their existing staff for the event and provide them the opportunity to earn extra money. Barney’s Leathers on Beach Street is one, according to owner Lisa McCarthy.
McCarthy said her part-time staffers are given the opportunity to work more hours during Biketoberfest.”My handyman, who normally fixes toilets, might come in and do security for us at night. Everyone looks forward to having that bonus in the paycheck,” she said in a telephone interview.
Bike Week is slightly different because it’s a 10-day event, she said, so she hires additional staff to work along side her regular employees.

COP SELLS MOVIE RIGHTS TO MEL GIBSON– CHARLOTTE, N.C. — William Queen, as an undercover agent, infiltrated one of the country’s most dangerous motorcycle gangs and brought 53 criminals to justice.Now the native North Carolinian has sold his movie rights to Mel Gibson.
“It was so unpredictable,” Queen said Wednesday. “You really didn’t know what you were going to be doing from day to day and sometimes hour to hour.”

BIKERNET BIKETOBERFEST RUNDOWN–This year as in the past more and more Bikers are finding places to stay other than in Daytona Beach Florida when they attend Biketoberfest which is officially October 20-23rd.
The high prices and attitude of the city and residents has driven them to places they feel more welcome. People are telling me they can stay at the same name hotel for $100.00 -$150.00 a day cheaper in nearby cities. Even with the increase in gas a price that leaves a lot of money left over for other things.
They will go into Daytona to visit the shops like Arlen Ness, Carl’s Speed Shop, Daytona Harley and Strokerz on Beach Street and the bars on Main Street but many more will be attending Bruce Rossmeyers new Harley shop and Destination Daytona. The new shop is on 150 acres just off Interstate 95 at the junction of US 1. They will be having a Grand Opening with numerous things going on But what has everyone talking is ZZ Top will be performing on Saturday October 22nd and it will Only Cost $10.00 admission. You can be sure where most of the Bikers will be Saturday, including Me. US 1 east from Destination Daytona and I-95 is where the famous Broken Spoke, Iron Horse, Smileys Tap, and the New Boot Hill Saloon are located.
Yep The Party Is Continuing To Move Out Of Daytona.The bars that cater to Bikers all year like The Last Resort, Cabbage Patch, Gilly’s Pub, No Name Saloon that are outside the city will always do well. LICHTER PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT DURING LOVE RIDE WEEKEND–For something great to do on the Saturday before the Love Ride, ride out to Old Pasadena to the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery for a motorcycle Kulture photography exhibition, celebrity bikes from the likes of Chica, Matt Hotch, Russell Mitchell, Roland Sands and Paul Yaffe in the gallery and a ride-in bike show outside.
For the occasion, photographer Michael Lichter will be displaying limited edition black and white and color photographs from his 25+ years of shooting the biker lifestyle all across America.
His work chronicles events dating back to the 1970’s as well as smaller gatherings right to the present. While Michael has exhibited in many museums, this will be his inaugural show with the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery, which represents his limited edition photographic prints. A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Love Ride for their charities.
