Hey,
Welcome to October! I don’t know about you, but I’m in a daze. We helped Nyla paint all her kitchen cabinets yesterday afternoon and into the evening. I think we shoulda taped off the windows and set-off a paint bomb off in the room. Whatta job and that’s just the first coat.
I’m working on the Bonneville epic. Promise to have it done next week. Let’s hit the news. I’m on paint duty this afternoon:

Daytona Gets Ready for Biketoberfest– The Daytona Beach area is revving up for thousands of motorcyclists to roll into town during Biketoberfest, an award-winning motorcycle rally that offers riders a weekend brimming with plenty of sun, 47 miles of sparkling beaches, bikes and fun. This year’s event is set for October 19-22, 2006.
The county-wide event includes activities from Ormond Beach south to New Smyrna Beach, and west to DeLand and Orange City. Visitors can look forward to viewing spectacular motorcycles from around the world; dining on delicious food and dancing to live music at the area’s three popular street festivals which are scheduled to take place on Beach Street, Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., and the legendary Main Street. Admission to all three festivals is free.
Other activities include motorcycle shows that showcase vintage and custom bikes, such as the Boardwalk Classic Ride-In Bike Show and the Daytona Beach News-Journal Motorcycle Expo. While at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway, Biketoberfest visitors will have the chance to take demonstration rides on the newest machines from top manufacturers, including Honda and Harley-Davidson. Speedway activities will also include live entertainment, food and apparel vendors, as well as motorcycle races during its Fall Cycle Scene event.
Throughout the four-day festival, concerts, special exhibits and competitions are planned at several area nightclubs and restaurants. A major part of the festival weekend for participants is riding and exploring the area’s diverse array of attractions and activities. The area’s most popular ride is The Loop, which is a 22-mile tour that takes riders along the area’s stretch of scenic coastal highway along A1A and inland to the region’s quiet countryside. Motorcycles will also be traveling from the Iron Horse Saloon on U.S. Highway 1 in Ormond Beach down to Gilly’s Pub in New Smyrna Beach. Visitors also shouldn’t miss Inlet Harbor Restaurant and Marina’s annual Rajun Cajun event which takes place each day of Biketoberfestr.
Over the years, visitors have been extremely generous to the many charities that ask for their support during Biketoberfest. This year, they will be able to make donations to Easter Seals, the United Way and the Conklin Center for the Blind via their annual motorcycle raffles; “Barktoberfest” at the Halifax Humane Society and Zangi Grotto, which conducts tours of Daytona Beach’s oldest cemetery in support of their fund that provides free dental care to children in need.
Official Biketoberfest posters, wallet cards and event guides will be available free-of-charge at the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau’s official Biketoberfest Welcome Centers at DAYTONA USA (adjacent to Daytona International Speedway) and at Destination Daytona, the Harley-Davidson dealership located at I-95 and U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach.
For information on accommodations and a complete calendar of events, visit the official Biketoberfest event Web site, www.biketoberfest.org, or contact the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau toll-free at 1-866-296-8970.

SUNDAY ADVICE FROM GRANDMA– Much was wasted because I was young when she died.
If she were alive today and sharing her pearls of wisdom, I’d be a better man. Those gems were all good, but the one I remember most, the jewel in the crown of grandmotherly advice, came when I was only 12. We were sitting in a park, watching children and their mothers enjoying a beautiful spring day.
She told me that one day, I’d find a great woman and start my own family. “And son, remember this always” she said, “be sure you marry a woman with small hands.”
“How come, Grandma ?” I asked her.
She said in her soft voice.. “makes your pecker look bigger.”
Kinda brings a tear to your eye, doesn’t it ?

RE: YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT BILLY LANE IN THE NEWS:– With all due respect, Bandit, what Billy allegedly did was not “just a roll of the dice.”
Drinking to excess was a choice he made. Driving on a suspended license was a choice he made. Passing in a no-passing zone was a choice he made. All were bad choices and unfortunately, another human being lost his life as a result. I have nothing against Billy; in fact, I admire his work and many of the things he’s done. But trying to write this incident off by saying “that this could have happened to any number of us” is, IMO, a copout attempt to absolve him of responsibility for his choices and actions. We demanded that Janklow be held accountable when he killed a biker. Why should it be any different for Billy Lane?
Lastly, lest you think I’m playing Monday morning quarterback, I’ve been there, done that, and have the scars to prove it. But I was that drunk driver over 20 years ago. Fortunately, I only hurt myself and not anyone else. I accepted accountability for my choices, actions, and their consequences. We should demand no less from Billy Lane or anyone else.
Regards,
Biscuit
Hey,
Good thoughts. Have you never had a beer or two and driven home? Have you never been crazy with some friends and did something stupid? That’s what I’m taking about.
Janklow tried to walk away and duck any punishment. He deliberately ran stops, had dozens of tickets, then tried to dodge the crime. Billy turned himself in.
Regarding Morelock, I’m very sorry. But in a sense I feel that they both rolled the dice. You know as well as I do, that when we ride we roll the dice, especially in a city like Los Angeles.

GUILTY TATTOO’S AND BIKETOBERFEST– It was bound to happen sooner or later. Guilty Customs is getting into the “skin” of their fans, literally! With the company’s unique and stylish “Celtic” logo as part of their marketing efforts, fans are taking the logo on the shoulder, arm or lower back, or anywhere else they wish.
Guilty Customs, along with a well known local tattoo studio, Tattudio of Longwood, Florida have a unique proposition for those attending Biketoberfest this October19-22 in Daytona. Stop by their booth on Saturday 21st and get a free certificate for a Guilty Celtic tattoo done by Tattudio. As many in the biking community know (as well as those who have tattoos) finding a good tattoo design is hard to come by. With the combination of a great design (4 rotating G’s cleverly disguised within a Celtic pattern) and a good tattoo artist, Guilty Customs has again demonstrated that this newcomer in the chopper community knows how to give its customers exactly what they want.
Guilty’s booth is across from Harley-Davidson on Beach Street in the park. Guilty is so sure their new bikes are going to get under your skin, that if you don’t leave with a one of their choppers, you’ll at least want something as unique as this Guilty Celtic tattoo!
“I have to admit, this wasn’t my idea” say Cj Hanlon, owner of Guilty Customs. “We’ve had people just ask us straight out, could they use our logo for a tattoo. After you have people asking you that, you start paying attention. Now, we’ve got guys in the shop planning their next tattoo around our logo. You can’t ask for anything better than that for brand recognition I guess” says Hanlon.
“We’re all about great tattoo’s and customer service” say Jennifer Cravens, owner of Tattudio. “When Cj approached us with this idea, and we saw their logo, we knew right away that we wanted to participate in something unique like this during Biketoberfest 06”.
While most of the attendees at Biketobefest 06′ are there to check out motorcycles and merchandise, consume large amounts of food and beer, and ride hours and hours with new and old friends, they now have the opportunity to do something unique to remember Biketoberfest 06, like getting a free tattoo. This offer is for one day only, Saturday October 21st from 3:00pm to 10:00pm at the Tattudio mobile trailer. Free vouchers can be found at the Guilty Customs trailer located on Beach Street across from the Harley-Davidson shop in Daytona.
Tattudio, Inc (www.tattudio.com) is a Longwood area tattoo studio known for their well trained and creative tattoo artist and dedication to customer satisfaction. They also are the only mobile studio in central Florida. Tattudio is located north of Iron Horse on US-1 in Ormond beach (if facing Iron Horse they are in the first vendor row on right) during Biketoberfest and get one awesome tattoo, free.

WINE AND WISDOM–WEDNESDAY, Sept. 27 (HealthDay News) — Drinking Cabernet Sauvignon may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, according to new animal research.
Reporting in the November issue of the FASEB Journal, researchers observed the effects of feeding the red wine to mice with Alzheimer’s disease-type brain changes.
Compared to mice that received ethanol or water, the mice that were given Cabernet Sauvignon experienced significantly reduced Alzheimer’s disease-type brain deterioration of memory function.
The researchers, from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, found Cabernet Sauvignon’s benefits were due to its ability to prevent the generation of proteins that cause plaque build-up in the brain, which is the main characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.
“This study supports epidemiological evidence indicating that moderate wine consumption, within the range recommended by the FDA dietary guidelines of one drink per day for women and two for men, may help reduce the relative risk for AD clinical dementia,” researchers Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti and Dr. Jun Wang said in a prepared statement.
The study findings will also be presented Oct 14-18 at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting, in Atlanta.

MSF/NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Site– Motorcycle Safety Foundation Introduces New Website to Assist Safety Community with Implementing the National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety
Through www.ImplementNAMS.org Website, Motorcycle and Traffic Safety Community Has New Resource to Help Make Motorcycling Safer for All Who Share the Road
The ImplementNAMS.org website was made possible by a combined effort of the MSF and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The website features an Event Calendar to keep users informed of motorcycling safety events and developments nationwide, and at its heart, a Discussion Forum organized by topical area as outlined in the National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety (NAMS).
Through the Discussion Forum, ImplementNAMS.org provides a place where the safety community can visit to share success, seek answers, or offer advice related to their efforts to improve motorcyclist safety by implementing the recommendations provided in NAMS. To maintain an effective and unbiased environment, volunteers from the ranks of Forum participants moderate the Forum.
ImplementNAMS.org is intended to serve as “Main Street” for all who have the desire and/or means to make a difference in motorcyclist safety. To assist, the MSF has established a NAMS Grant Program available for those who wish to implement innovative projects based upon the recommendations provided in NAMS. This small-award grant program targets a broad range of grassroots efforts to improve motorcyclist safety. The Foundation?s grants, up to $10,000 each, may be used to jumpstart new programs or to support ongoing efforts that complement NAMS recommendations.

DEPUTY ACCUSED IN FATAL DWI STILL HAS HIS LICENSE TO DRIVE– This is a very heated case with ABATE and the Sheriff involved in the accident. this link is to RNEWS which interviewed Mike Cavuto President of Monroe County ABATE.
(September 27, 2006) – PARMA – A Monroe County sheriff’s deputy who was charged with drunken driving in Parma after allegedly hitting and killing a motorcyclist earlier this month still has a license to drive. James R. Telban Jr., 44, of Greece pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated Tuesday in Parma Town Court.
The District Attorney’s Office on Monday confirmed that Telban’s blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit the night of Sept. 6, when Peter Volkmuth, 27, of Greece collided with his pickup truck on West Ridge Road and died. Telban was pulling out of a country club about 10:15 p.m. when the crash occurred. Telban’s blood-alcohol was 0.24 percent.
Parma Judge James Maley Jr. said he had not received evidence of Telban’s level of intoxication and without it did not have the authority to revoke his license, which Assistant District Attorney Kristin Splain had asked for. The case has been waived to a Monroe County grand jury. Outside the courthouse, more than a dozen motorcyclists who gathered along with friends of Volkmuth’s family were disappointed at the outcome.
“If it would have happened to anybody else the guy would have been waiting for his trial in jail,” said Michael Cavuto, president of the Monroe County chapter of ABATE, a motorcycle advocacy organization. Telban, who refused a breath test the night of the accident, had his blood drawn almost three hours later, Splain said.
Telban left the courthouse in a vehicle driven by his parents, said attorney Joseph Damelio. FDIAZ@DemocratandChronicle.com

LAWYERS CITE SELF-DEFENSE FOR HELLS ANGELS IN NEVADA CASINO BRAWL– Mohave Valley News, NV – LAS VEGAS (AP) – Defense lawyers said Wednesday that Hells Angels were defending themselves and didn’t plot a deadly brawl with rival Mongols motorcycle gang members during a southern Nevada biker rally in 2002 as a federal prosecutor charged.
”You have to see the evidence and watch it to know there’s two sides,” said David Chesnoff, whose client, Calvin Schaefer, is clearly seen in hotel surveillance videos firing a handgun during the bloody brawl on the casino floor at Harrah’s Laughlin.
Two Hells Angels and a Mongols member died and at least a dozen people were injured in the melee that marred the April 2002 Laughlin River Run motorcycle rally.
”Watch Calvin,” Chesnoff told the federal jury in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas. He compared the actions of his 37-year-old client with those of veteran Las Vegas police Sgt. Gary Hood, who received a departmental medal of valor for drawing his handgun and firing one shot during the fracas.
”Everything he does is in response to either a friend or him being attacked,” Chesnoff said of Schaefer, a sheet metal worker from Chandler, Ariz., who is seen drawing a handgun, turning and firing at a Mongol identified as Kenneth Dysart, who appeared to shoot first and then have his gun jam.
Police later found one bullet casing and six intact bullets near where Dysart stood, Chesnoff said, adding that Schaefer had a valid concealed weapons permit and a clean criminal record before his arrest.
”Now he’s sitting here facing the loss of his freedom and liberty defending himself. Why? Because he’s a Hells Angel,” the lawyer said.

CODE OF THE WEST LESSON–A reader sent me this joke and I lost it. I’ll fire myself later, but let me adlib it for you here. It hits home right now.
A guys goes to see his doctor for a check up. He’s 66 and for some reason he has a burning desire to know if he’ll make it to 80. The doctor checks him over and runs all the normal blood tests.
You’re lookin’ good,” the doc said, “but let me ask you some questions.”
“Do you smoke?”
“Nope.”
“Do you have affairs?”
“Nope.”
“Do you ride motorcycles?”
“Nope, gave ’em up.”
“Do you chase women.”
“Gave it up.”
“Are you involved in any dangerous sport?”
“Do, the ol’ lady won’t let me.”
“Do you eat sweets?”
“Not since is was a kid.”
“Do you gamble?”
“Never.”
“Do you work with dangerous tools or weld.”
“Afraid to.”
“What’s your diet like?”
“Strict, low carb, lotsa fruit and vegetables.”
“Do you drink?”
“Can’t. So doc will I make it to 80?
“What difference does it make? You’re already dead.”
I thought this hit home. We’re so engrained with safety issues, usually forced on us to save money for insurance profits. Life is about adventures, love and friendship. At lease it is for me and I believe for most Bikers. We want something more out of life than some long lasting humdrum existence in front of a television set.
So there you have it. Let’s party.
Ride forever,
–Bandit
