NEW WORLD ORDER BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for January 5, 2017

Hey,

I received a note from the MRF about a state trying to pass another helmet law. Over the last eight years we’ve seen a shift from a balanced approach to save everything. The notion that if one precious life could be saved we can torture thousands for years to prevent one death. Think about it from two prospectives.

First, the worst problem on the planet is overpopulation. And is the design to make health care a mega industry by keeping us alive as long as possible. Of course, in the process, our freedoms fly out the window. I’m hoping to see freedom return as a priority in this country and a balanced approach for safety.

What do you think?

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine, Born to Ride, Iron Trader, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Choppertown and the Las Vegas Bike Fest. Incredible.

LEARN TO TILT– What is it?

Tilting Motor Works has developed a breakthrough leaning 3-wheel conversion that offers the stability and safety benefits of 3 wheels with the handling of a motorcycle. The conversion involves removing the front fork and the front wheel and replacing it with a new front end that bolts to the frame. Conversions are performed by TMW or its authorized dealers. It is not available as a do-it-yourself kit.

What’s good about having 2 wheels in the front?

It’s the most efficient design for a 3-wheeler that leans. And a vehicle has to lean if it’s going to feel like a motorcycle. A front conversion also puts more traction up front where it belongs, improving cornering and braking.

How does it handle compared to a motorcycle?

A TMW-equipped 3-wheeler steers, countersteers, leans and handles just like the original motorcycle. If you don’t look below the handlebars you might not remember that you have two wheels in the front.

Hang on for more from the Tilting masterminds.

BIKERNET READER COMMENT–

Florida Vertical Motorcycle License Plate Warning

I mounted side plate, vertical. If you have more than one beer before riding, don’t mess with the small stuff. You might be surprised how many police ride motorcycles.

As far as the gun carry comment goes, You have a 2nd amendment right to own and carry. But it goes much deeper than that. It is your right to defend against a hostile government take over like almost happened with Hilderly. Not a real good parallel.

— Shootit
Palm Coast , FL

The article was posted in 2011 and as far as I know there has not been any
changes since it was written.

I will check with lawyer and legal team if you want, but the reader may have
had more than one beer before commenting.
Not sure how the guns and Hillary got into it.

WORDS FROM THE MOUNTAIN–
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, let the mind remain in the present moment.” – Buddha

Well my friends It’s day 5 of 2017. How did day 1 go? I had to do some cleansing in my mind in order to move forward in 2017.

Today, as is every day, is an opportunity to make the changes to Live the Life we want to Live.

Why not begin with some quiet time, to just calm your mind in order to handle all that we are faced with today.

It is so easy to get up rushed and immediately start the day on automatic pilot and not take a few minutes for quiet time. I find when I am in the present moment I am never stuck or limited.

In this place, I can release the blockages and frustration that occur when my attention attaches to the past or future, we must learn to recognize the presence of our true self in each present moment. After a few minutes of quiet time I am ready to move forward with my day with confidence and conviction.

FROM THE WTF FILES–
Facebook co-founder’s new $10 million initiative to test if cash handouts will help fix America

CNBC
Catherine Clifford
CNBC
Yahoo Finance News

Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes, Harvard Law School and Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society Professor Yochai Benkler, Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza and Alaska State Senator Bill Wielechowski may not agree on everything, but they agree on this: Cash handouts have the potential to help Americans and the American economy.

Given the challenges posed by automation and globalization, which are replacing workers and leading to stagnating wages, direct payments to workers may, in fact, be the only solution.

More than 100 organizers, activists, researchers and technologists, including Y Combinator President Sam Altman and former President of the Sierra Club Adam Werbach, have come together to support research being done by a new group into the viability of universal basic income in the U.S.

The group, announced this week and called The Economic Security Project, has raised $10 million to fund two years of exploration and experimentation of the idea of a universal basic income, which is a cash payment made to individuals by the government. With universal basic income , residents get regular, reliable payments regardless of whether they have a job.

“Our faith in the good nature of our fellow citizens has never felt more brittle, and many people on the left and the right are thinking about how to create a more inclusive, empathetic America.

“This collective anxiety has many sources, but one of the most important is a diminishing faith in the American ideal of equal opportunity for all,” writes Hughes, one of three co-chairs of the group, in a post for Medium.

The group posits that universal basic income payments are a solution to the dire, and growing, problem of inequality. “We know from research in the US and internationally that recurring, unconditional cash stipends are a shockingly effective way to encourage work, improve health and education outcomes, and create a ladder of economic opportunity,” says Hughes.

The U.S. is not alone in considering a universal basic income. Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada and Holland are all in some stage of discussions, according to The Economic Security Project.

Already, Alaska has a version of a universal basic income. All state residents receive yearly cash dividends of $2,072 from state oil revenues, the group says.

“It’s time for a game-changing solution to address the economic anxiety and concerns faced by too many Americans,” says Roosevelt Institute Fellow Dorian Warren, one of the co-chairs of the group, in a written statement announcing the launch of the group. “We believe we can end the downward spiral for working families in America by providing a guaranteed basic income for every man, woman, and child – but the precise approach for implementing a cash benefit system needs additional research.”

Some of the biggest names in tech have also been promoting the idea of a universal basic income. In response to Amazon’s announcement of a grocery store with no check-out registers, reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted out, “We needed to start talking about Universal Basic Income a few years ago…”

Elon Musk, the legendary futurist and founder of SpaceX and Tesla, said recently that he considers universal basic income a nearly foregone conclusion. “There is a pretty good chance we end up with a universal basic income, or something like that, due to automation,” Musk told CNBC . “Yeah, I am not sure what else one would do. I think that is what would happen.”

“America ought to be a place where if you work hard, you can get ahead – that’s the promise of the American Dream and the lesson we’ve been taught for generations. But far too many Americans are struggling to survive, instead of thriving and pursuing passions that could create a better world for all of us,” says Natalie Foster, future of work expert and the third co-chair of the new group.

“Basic income could be the bold solution we need to remake the economy so it works again, for all of us.”

PAINTING OF 1938 INDIAN BY MATHEW HINTZ FEATURED IN MECUM LAS VEGAS AUCTION CATALOG– Original Painting to be Auctioned to Benefit Curing Kids Cancer

An original painting by Milwaukee artist Mathew Hintz of a 1938 Indian Model 438 Four motorcycle will be featured in the auction catalog and on a daily show program for the 2017 Mecum Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction to be conducted on January 25-28. The painting captures the streamlined front fender and massive, longitudinal engine of the sporty, 100-mph Indian motorcycle, an award-winning restoration by Elmer Lower that will be a main attraction at the auction, offered at no reserve on Saturday, January 28, as lot S167.

Hintz is also pleased to announce that the original 36 x 48-inch museum-quality painting has been donated by the artist for auction, with all proceeds directed to Curing Kids Cancer. The painting will be offered on Friday, January 27, as lot J80.

Auction attendees will be able to see artist Mathew Hintz working live on the auction floor as he creates additional paintings of vintage motorcycle subjects. Specializing in “gas and oil” subjects, Hintz has worked professionally for more than 20 years to develop the techniques behind his distinctive sculptural layered-paint portraits and rugged charcoal drawings. His commissioned artwork aims to capture the mechanical detail of a cherished machine and evoke emotion and pride in its owner.

Hintz has also worked since 1998 as a contract artist to the Harley-Davidson Styling Department creating motorcycle paint designs, helmet graphics, logos and tank medallions, as well as the original cover art for Harley-Davidson Owner Manuals. In 2016 Hintz was licensed to produce artwork for Ford Images.

To see more work by Mathew Hintz or to contact the artist regarding an original commission go to HintzStudios.com

The 2017 Mecum Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction at the South Point Hotel & Casino will feature nearly 1,000 motorcycles representing dozens of marques ranging in years from 1911 to 2011, including 300 quality Japanese motorcycles, many up for auction without reserve. For more information go to Mecum.com.

UNCLE MONKEY IS STILL HUNGOVER–

It is that mid-winter lull and you are left with a holiday hang over. You blew your bike money on family, food, wine and gifts. You already mocked up the Christmas parts you got, so here you sit. You pass the time tidying the garage, taking stock of where to go next with your build. It is time to look into picking up a new skill, new technique to take your builds to the next level.

Maybe your mind is already wondering to warm breezes and sunny beaches – an escape from the cold to the tropics. Time to feel the sand between your toes, the coconut oil in the air. Some dark sun glasses for the skimpy bikini hunting. Or what about the island life of an endless buffet.?

An old project is dusted off from under the bench. The most valuable thing you have is time to spend on it. Your old lady wanders in and out to check on you. You wonder why it took so long to get to it. Amazed at how you can now just grab a part or proper tool to finesse it the way you always hoped. The old lady approves and consents to having it in the house.

For some it is bunkering down in an old trailer out on a frozen lake. An old transistor radio tuned into the local news talk, a line or two through a hole in the ice, the latest sizzling in a pan with a little butter and lemon. Friends wander by time to time to see if they are biting.

You wonder what this world is coming too, wonder where this world went. You tuck another log in the potbelly and crack another beer cursing the fool on the radio.

Others are breaking out old jerseys hoping for another run at the cup. It has been a good season. That new player is making a big difference. A couple good games and your team will be hoisting the cup up high. And yet for others it is time to return the trusty jersey to the back of the closet.

Another bitter year, another disappointment. If they had only gambled on the long shot, been more aggressive there and more conservative then. But there is next year. For now it is time to look for a bandwagon that won’t be too embarrassing.

-bad Uncle Monkey

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN– With Christmas close behind us, I would like to share a personal experience about drinking and driving.

I was out for an evening and had more than several beers followed by a couple of bottles of rather nice red wine. I had the common sense to know I was over the limit. I took a taxi home.

Sure enough on the way there was a police roadblock, but since it was a taxi they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise to me, because I had never driven a taxi before. I don’t know where I got it, and now that it’s in my garage I don’t know what to do with it.

So, anyway, if you want to borrow it give me a call.

DELAWARE TRYING FOR A HELMET LAW– We are monitoring for signs of any legislation that will affect motorcycles and this is the first one to come in.

A strong position and response from motorcyclist is needed and we will continue a strong presence to let those who try to take our rights away Know We are tired of it and going to fight them every time they do.

Mandatory Helmet Law bill in the State of Delaware

As expected Representative Sean M. Lynn (D-Dover) and Senator Gary F Simpson (R) have once again introduced a Mandatory Helmet Law – House Bill 14 in the state of Delaware. It is now in the hands of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.

Chainsaw and I have issue a call to action for the membership of ABATE of Delaware and our supporters. We are also shaking the bushes for speakers when it does go before the committee. We are a small state and last session we defeated this in committee and I believe we embarrassed rep Lynn. I fear he may bring out the big guns on this. His party has tried that before and we need all the help we can get

I have heard it said that if a legislator get 10 letters for or against a piece of legislation they are more likely to support that position.

I can also use all the help I can get on this, if you have suggestions I would like to hear them. Although I’ve assisted Hildy for years this is my first time in the seat.

HB 14
https://legis.delaware.gov/BillDetail/25340

Ask them to support you and the entire motorcycling community and
Against ANY Mandatory Helmet Legislation and why you feel that way.

You may recall that these two attempted this during the last session
With HB 54, but didn’t get a single vote to move it out of Committee.

We need to stop this bill in Committee!!

In each email you send to the Committee Members address them

FIN ASSISTS IN RECOVERING 2016 POLARIS SLINGSHOT– The Find It Now USA theft recovery team received notice of a stolen 2016 Polaris Slingshot late in the evening of December 13, 2016. Utilizing the FIN® GPS security device installed at vehicle purchase from Gables Motorsports, a FIN® theft recovery expert was able to provide specific location coordinates to responding deputies, approx. 1 mile away from where the vehicle was stolen.

A short time later, responding deputies arrived to the location and recovered the Polaris with minor damage. Further review of surveillance video from the customer’s residence shows how the thief broke the lock used to secure the Polaris, and further helped to identify the suspect, leading to an arrest.

The relieved FIN® customer submitted: “…Jason with FIN tracked my vehicle, and not just coordinated with Miami Dade Police department, but also followed up all the way until they found it and arrested the perpetrator.”

“That’s nuthin'” says the Irishman, “Im my pub back in Dublin, you walk up to the bar, they give the first pint fer free, the second pint fer free, the third pint fer free — and then they take you upstairs and you have sex for FREE!”

“Is that true?” asks the Scotsman. “Has that really happened to you?”

“Well, no,” says the Irishman, “but it happens to me sister all the time!”

SENATOR RESPONDS TO PROFILING LETTER–
 Dear Mr. Monroe,

Thank you for contacting me regarding motorcycle profiling and H.Res. 831. I appreciate your thoughts on this issue and welcome the opportunity to respond.

On July 13, 2016, Representative Reid Ribble (R-WI) introduced H.Res. 831 to the promote awareness of motorcycle profiling. This legislation supports collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling. The resolution also encourages state law enforcement officials to include training materials and policies condemning motorcycle profiling.

As defined within this legislation, motorcycle profiling occurs when law enforcement uses the fact that a person rides a motorcycle, or wears related apparel, as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the United States Constitution.

I am committed to the principle of non-discrimination and enforcement of laws providing equality for all Americans and I remain very passionate about protecting the fundamental rights of Americans. I will take every appropriate action to ensure that Americans are free from unreasonable searches by the government in today’s technological world.

H.Res. 831 was referred to the House Judiciary Committee. The 114th Congress came to a close without passage of H.Res. 831. Should a measure similar to H.Res. 831 be introduced in the 115th Congress, which began January 3, 2017, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me on this issue. If you have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or my staff. My office can be reached at 202-224-3004, or online at www.sullivan.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

–Dan Sullivan
United States Senator

KURYAKYN INTRODUCES ALL-NEW MESH COLLECTION–
Kuryakyn has thrived on the ability to quickly and effectively introduce groundbreaking new products to the motorcycle industry.

In 2017 the Wisconsin-based team is kicking it up a notch with a first-quarter new product release schedule that’s unprecedented in its 28-year history. Leading the charge is the debut of Kuryakyn’s most comprehensive product line to-date, the all-new “Mesh” collection.

The Mesh collection is loaded with more than 50 direct-replacement components for Harley-Davidson Dyna, Softail, Sportster and Touring models.

The entire product line incorporates multi-piece construction throughout. Most parts utilize a three-piece design integrating chrome or satin black aluminum outer frames with a satin black aluminum baseplate that’s exposed through satin black or chrome stainless steel mesh panels.

The construction method and resulting look is unlike anything available, and unlike anything Kuryakyn has ever developed.
“We worked to really dial in the Mesh design to be a hybrid of mechanical and industrial aesthetics,” said Kuryakyn Director of Product Management Matt Leisch. “This is one of the largest product collections we’ve ever rolled out. The rugged style combined with ease of installation and customization will appeal to not only core Kuryakyn customers, but also the emerging group of riders and builders who want that raw, edgy look for their bikes.”

Visible socket-head cap screws add a rugged, mechanical appearance and securely fasten the components in place. The multi-piece designs easily disassemble for unlimited custom finish options by end users, as the baseplates, stainless steel mesh panels and frames can be all be painted or coated to match any color theme.

Included in the collection are bolt-on derby, timing and master cylinder covers for XL, Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight platforms, as well as caliper covers for FX and FL models. Mesh dash inserts, fuel doors, saddlebag hinge covers and fairing vent accents are a handful of highlighted offerings for bagger models.

Multi-fit components include Mesh gas caps and L.E.D. fuel and battery voltage gauges available for tanks equipped with screw-in caps and/or illuminated fuel gauges. Rounding out the multi-fit accessories are replacement bezels for bullet and flat-style turn signals.

The Mesh collection has plenty to offer whether creating a full custom theme or complementing other aftermarket accessories. For more information and to view the entire line, visit www.kuryakyn.com/mesh.

FROM RECENTLY DISCOVERED BIKERNET TRIKES CAVE IN THE INDIAN DESERT–

To go live this week is a two-part article focusing on the Ural Sidecar Motorcycle Culture. Don’t you really want to live on the road. Here is a plan and detailed examples of dudes and dolls who are doing it across the world on a Ural sidecar motorcycle. A rich history and a unique tradition. These Urals are legends on 3 wheels. We bring you the sub-culture of motorcyclists who go beyond hype and brands to truly have a life-long adventure.

We finally heard from dope-fiend resident hippie Raymond Hamilton after the end of year parties and boozing. He was in a deep philosophical mood after witnessing the sun rise in the New Year from above his hairy balls on a deserted beach at high noon. His wisdom speaks and I quote.

This is perfect. We would like to produce a series of articles covering everything we ask about fluids. How about, “Synthetics, any rules or guidelines for engines? Which brake fluid to use where? Engine oil in the primary case, good or bad? How much of what weight in front ends makes a difference.” The list goes on.

DISTRACTED DRIVERS BECOME CARELESS DRIVERS IN NEW MEXICO–

We are preparing for our 2017 90 day legislative session. Our 14th Annual Bike Day at the Capital is scheduled for February 25.

We are currently looking for a sponsor for our Careless Driving Bill. The purpose of this bill is to give New Mexico Courts sentencing options that better match the range of outcomes possible when someone has committed the act of careless driving.

Existing accountability options for people found guilty of careless driving include a fine, of up to $300.00 dollars, and/or the possibility of probation or jail time, up to 90 days. While this is adequate in careless driving cases that only cause property damage or minor injury, it is inadequate in cases where the outcome is great bodily harm or death.

With our bill, the accountability options will be increased. Guilty careless drivers who cause the death or great bodily harm of another road user could be asked to pay a
fine, of up to $1,000.00 dollars and/or serve probation or jail time up to 364 days.

We have also heard we may be facing a helmet bill. In 2015 we defeated two helmet bills, one was a mandatory helmet bill, and second was a bill which would require any motorcyclist who chose not to wear a helmet to pay $697.00 on yearly registration of the motorcycle. Both of these helmet bills were being supported by the director of the Medical Investigators office and a group of trauma physicians who claimed un-helmeted riders we costing our state 40 million dollars in head injuries. Both bills were killed in the first committee.

The family of a nine-year-old Victoria Martin who was recently drugged, raped, arms cut off and body burned in a bath tub asked our motorcycle community to escort the hearse to her memorial service. When the location having the memorial service heard that hundreds of bikers would be in attendance, they voiced their concerns of violence.

It was great to hear that the chief of police spoke up at a planning meeting for the event and stated “where these folks gather there is never any problems, they do a lot to support our community.” There were over a thousand motorcyclists attended two events in honor of the victim and family of this horrible tragedy. The grandmother of Victoria told us she was always afraid of bikers, but know she sees us as family.

We have had an increase in motorcycle crashes in New Mexico. To date we have had 218 motorcycle crashes reported to the NMMRO with 43 fatalities for 2016. At this time last year we had 161 crashes reported to us with 23 fatalities.

I heard from an insurance agent that motorcycle insurance rates are higher in our
states then other states because of our loss of ratio.

WHAT’S IT MEAN?–
Owning a car has always been one of those milestones in a person’s life. When we were kids we dreamed about what kind of car we would own in the future. We dreamed of dragging Main Street so we could visit our friends and crush on each other. We dreamed of driving on our very first out-of-town adventure without a parent present.

A little older, we dreamed of taking our family on a long drive cross country to see the wilds of the West or the autumn colors of New England. Whatever the dream we had, we owned that magnificent machine that was all ours that would take us to glorious places.

Young people don’t seem to dream like that anymore. Perhaps they had it too easy with parents who drove them wherever and whenever they needed. Teenagers no longer drag Main Street since they now have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to communicate with each other whenever they want. My 14-year-old son recently told me he wasn’t sure he even wanted a driver’s license. When I was 14, that thought would have never occurred to me.

Let’s face it, owning a car is expensive. To buy or lease a car, you need either a good-sized down payment or a terrific trade in. Then there is the monthly payment, auto insurance, yearly tags and fees. All of this needs to be in place before you sit in your car and drive.

Driving costs include fuel with the inherent gas taxes, toll fees, parking and maintenance. I recently tried to replace a headlamp in my car and was unable to do it myself due to the complexity of the engine. Cost me $40.00 to have a local mechanic put it in. New cars now are so complex and connected that mere mortals can barely put oil in the engine anymore.

What if you are required to get that yearly emissions test and your car does not pass inspection?

What if your car breaks down and unfortunately the tow fees cost more than the repair?

What if you receive a traffic ticket and the city wants $490, which is the going rate in California for several types of moving violations?

Driver’s education is no longer part of the school curriculum and now a hopeful driver has to attend driving school for a fee that can be out of reach for many. Young people are finding they cannot afford to drive and some adults can no longer either. If you live in the country or have no public transportation options, you have no option but to drive or move.

By 2025, the City of Helsinki, Finland plans to have no car ownership at all. Helsinki has a metro population of 1.6 million people and is frequently considered one of the top 10 most livable cities in the world. Depending on how this works out in Helsinki, officials in Finland (population of 5.4 million with a density of 17 inhabitants per square kilometer) plan to roll out this non-car ownership scheme to the rest of the country.

Of course, the Finns will still be mobile and I can imagine would use all the mobility options open to them such as walking, biking, bus service, public transportation, carsharing and ridesharing.

Having lived in Germany for nearly 12 years, I cannot imagine Germans giving up car ownership. Just like their home, their car is their kingdom and they take great pride in driving and caring for their vehicles.

American car owners have a similar attitude. We generally love to drive except when caught in a grinding commute that allows us to only stop and start. The open road always beckons us to drive and we Americans do so in droves.

As car owners, we have so many options now. We can buy large cars, small cars, for city-driving-only cars, electric cars, hybrid cars, hydrogen fueled cars. But what about used cars? Old cars? Classic cars? Paris (and some American cities) has banned old cars from the inner city due to emissions. Could the same ban occur in all urban areas of the United States in the future?

As ridesharing and carsharing take hold, will giving up owning a car be the same as giving up your phone land line when you realize you no longer need it since you have a personal cell phone in your pocket or purse? Instead of ownership, would you become a part of a car cooperative or have a yearly subscription to a ridesharing or carsharing service or both? The idea that we would no longer have to do anything with a car except to ride could be quite appealing to many.

The idea of not owning or leasing your OWN car for your own personal use anytime you want seems like a rather difficult concept for many of us. For younger people like my son, the concept of owning or leasing a car for your own personal use also seems rather difficult.

All I can say for now, I still own a car and have no plans of changing that paradigm any time soon. My son will have to figure out this one for himself.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL WIDE OPEN–
A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

‘You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,’ the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. ‘The young people of today are much more advanced than people your age. We grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon and the Internet. We have cell phones, nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers, automated manufacturing, amazing technologies’…and paused to take another drink of beer.

The senior took advantage of the break in the student’s litany and said, ‘You’re right, son. We didn’t have those things when we were young…. So we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are YOU doing for the next generation?’

WOW, I CAN’T IMAGINE—
But I’m being forced to imagine many obstructive, restrictive and freedomless things. Think about it. Five years ago we thought about the next party, run or custom bike we might build to ride to Sturgis.

“IT’S NOT THE WIND THAT MAKES THE FLAG WAVE BUT THE LAST BREATH OF THE SOLDIERS WHOM HAVE DIED TO SECURE OUR FREEDOM”

What Freedom? We are rapidly becoming the most restrictive country on the planet. But I want to and will find a way to feel free once more. I’m not sure how, but I’m working on it.

In the meantime, go for a ride.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
