Wait, so next year we should quit work, projects, goals, and deadlines and just celebrate from one Holiday to the next.

THE BURT MUNRO BOOK–The real Burt Munro, inventor of the world’s fastest Indian motorcycle, in his own words. A fascinating collection of Burt Munro memorabilia including photos from his family album, newspaper clippings, and interviews with Burt himself, this book reveals the real Burt Munro – the man behind the movie.
Roger Donaldson has been studying Burt Munro for many years. He made a documentary on him back in 1971, called Offerings to the God of Speed, as well as the 2005 international hit The World’s Fastest Indian. During research for both films, he collected lots of material which has never been published, and Burt’s son also released Munro family scrapbooks to Roger, allowing them to be published here for the first time.
In preparation for the documentary Roger interviewed Burt and also taped Burt chatting to several of his cronies and co-workers. These tapes have been transcribed for this book, presenting the real Burt Munro in his own words.
Random House New Zealand is the publisher of Roger Donaldson’s book ” The World’s Fastest Indian“, which is a fascinating collection of Burt Munro memorabilia, including never before published material.

DIRECT FROM WASHINGTON DC, MRF REPORT–It is the last week of Congress, so there is a lot of action and at the same time none at all.
You may recall the “cromnibus” that the Congress was working on: it passed. The Senate held a “rare as hens teeth” Saturday session to avoid shutting down the government. The House had passed the measure a few days earlier.
The mammoth piece of legislation wrapped up 11 spending bills into one big package; this means that only two of the 13 spending bills received actual debate and a real live amendment process. Shame on you Congress. Spending $1.1 trillion dollars with a single stroke of the pen must be exhilarating for Mr. Obama, but it’s bankrupting our country. Personally, I don’t think a government shutdown is all that bad – send the eurocrats home and save some money!
The House Oversight Committee held a hearing on the EPA’s handling of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The committee findings are that the RFS needs to be changed to reflect the current fuel landscape. They determined that it’s far too difficult to find traditional, ethanol-free fuel.
It was noted that some municipalities have no other option other than ethanol blends. The purpose of the RFS was to allow for the sale of ethanol, but at the same time, traditional fuels should be available as well. The Congress is likely to act on ethanol bills in the next Congress. The assumptions of the RFS have not come to fruition, and are likely to be addressed.
In fact, during the hearing the committee specifically mentioned how the higher ethanol blends are damaging to motorcycles. I expect the Senate Democrats to draw out adjournment as far as possible, as this is their last kick at the can and they have realized it.
Senate Leader Harry Reid has already stated that he will not adjourn until all the pending nominations in the Senate have been confirmed. Senator Reid is using his waning power as Senate Leader to do President Obama’s bidding while he still has the nuclear option, meaning he can confirm nominations with a simple majority of 51 votes, rather then traditional 60.
Senator Reid changed this rule earlier this year, since he simply did not have the needed 60 votes. Republicans, who will assume leadership of the Senate, have already signaled that they will change the rule back to the 60 votes needed, even though they do not have 60 Republican Senators.

TRIKES NOT LEGAL IN AUSTRALIA—
I’ve been able to speak with an Aussie authorized H-D dealer who was able to import some Harley trikes a while ago.
However, that loophole is now closed.
There is no legal way that anyone can bring a current model Harley-Davidson trike into Australia and have it registered.
However, there are a number of people who do trike conversions down here, and these conversions are legal.
Which is his only real option.

MOTORCYCLE HISTORY FROM MOTORCYCLEPEDIA–Like BSA, La Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre (‘FN’, for short) began as a munitions manufacturer, turning to the production of motorcycles in 1900. This 1908 FN was the first inline-4 production motorcycle. With speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, it was also the fastest production motorcycle in the world.
In the U.S., the 1908 model was upgraded and released as a 1908 1/2 model, called the F.N Big Four. Advanced for its day, the 362cc air-cooled four featured ‘atmospheric’ inlet and mechanical (side) exhaust valves, a robust five-bearing crankshaft, individual crankcase oil wells ensuring adequate lubrication for the connecting rods, and reliable Bosch magneto ignition. Shaft final drive was another innovation. Supported on ball bearings, the drive shaft ran inside the right-hand frame member to a bevel gear on the rear axle. At first there was no clutch, the direct-drive machine being started by pedaling away until the engine fired. Two brakes (drum and rim-type) both operated on the rear wheel. The engine was enlarged around 1908 to 498cc.
The success of the FN Four directly lead to the Pierce Four’s use of the same engine mounted longitudinally with a shaft drive after Pierce-Arrow’s Percy Pierce brought a 1908 FN Four home from Europe to disassemble and study.

AUSTRALIAN BIKER NEWS–Biker arrested with drugs in Adelaide.
Police will allege that at about 6pm, they attempted to stop the man when he was driving his car, which resulted in a minor collision with a police vehicle. A subsequent search of the man’s car uncovered an amount of methamphetamine and cash.
A 39-year-old Happy Valley man was charged with trafficking a controlled drug and driving without due care, and was refused bail to appear in court today.
Detective Chief Inspector Kym Hand, officer in charge of the Crime Gangs Task Force says, “This is the third major drug arrest in the past week involving members of an outlaw motorcycle gang, including the Hells Angels, Mongols and Rebels. Police will continue to target the criminal activities of these groups.”

Indian Motorcycle left a brand new 2015 Indian Scout in the capable hands of Klock Werks Kustoms following the Sturgis reveal. The job of being one of the first to customize the new model fell to Karlee Cobb.
“In 2008, at age 14, Karlee became the youngest person to set a land speed record at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, so it seemed only appropriate that she would design one of the first 2015 Indian Scouts”, says Klock Werks owner Brian Klock. “She had the biggest grin after test riding the new Scout – so giving Karlee the reins on this project seemed a natural fit.”

COLD SEASON BONES–Making the rounds visiting friends this holiday season it is hard to not notice many of them are hobbling around more than usual. Years of hard riding and pushing themselves beyond what could be expected have caught up to them. There are hushed words about maybe having to sell their bikes, bad prognosis that say last year was the last year.
For some it just is age catching up but for many it ignoring what their body was telling them to begin with. The first time I blew out my back the doctor didn’t paint a very bright picture for my future. To keep doing what I was doing would mean I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was forty. I heeded his words. Change wasn’t easy. Yeah I was a healthy young man but lifting a couch was beyond what I could do.
It took a while, many days spent recovering from lifting what I shouldn’t, but I finally put my pride behind me and simply stopped try to be superman. Time passed and as long as I wasn’t lifting motors into frames I was leading a normal life.
The second time I blew out my back it meant changing careers, meant I could no longer straight shot the 500+ miles to Sturgis on a bike. When even short rides on the bikes left in pain I visited the doctor again. Each pothole, every tar snake was reinjuring my back, I could keep riding for a couple more years and end up in a wheelchair or I had to let my back attempt to heal.
It was a tough decision. I sold my bike to distant myself from the temptation of riding. I spent that time working on Snow White, while wishing I was out on the road. After two years I returned riding Snow White, lots of short trips working out the bugs in the bike, working out the bugs in my back.
The doc says my back will never be 100%, there is just too much scar tissue, but if I keep being smart, no more iron butts, and trailering my bike to Sturgis. I should be able to keep riding for many years to come. It is advice one of my friends wished he would have taken. He was bullheaded, stubborn. He was a biker goddamnit. Now, at an age when he could afford to have the free time to ride, when he could afford to roll on the miles, he is lucky if he can make it to the corner store in the car. My body will still be worn out heap, when I die but I should be able to come in skidding on a bike.

WASHINGTON TARGETS DISTRACTED DRIVING IN MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS VIDEO–The Washington State Motorcycle Safety Program recently released a new motorcycle awareness video targeting inattentive drivers. Created with teen driver education students in mind, the eight-minute-long film starts by showing a teen driver cruising the streets in a car while eating and listening to loud music.
When he turns left into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist, time stops, giving both the driver and rider a chance to exit their vehicles and talk to each another.
After some initial frustration, Randy the motorcyclist gets in the car with Ian, the teen driver, and teaches him the dos and don’ts of how to drive when sharing the road with motorcyclists. Randy’s lessons include looking twice before turning and giving motorcycles more space.
The two eventually return to their vehicles and the inevitable crash takes place.
“The video is meant to be a relevant and easily accessible tool for Driver Training providers to use as they fulfill the motorcycle awareness requirement of their curriculum,” states the Washington State Department of Licensing, adding that the WMSP is supported by motorcycle endorsement fees and is tasked with providing Public Awareness of motorcycle safety, Motorcycle Safety education programs including classroom and on-cycle training, and Improved operator testing.

THE WEEKLY HUPY AND ABRAHAM LEGAL REPORT–Breaking Down Search and Seizure.
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”
Based upon the principle that a man’s home is his castle, the Fourth Amendment secures the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures.
It also protects against arbitrary arrests, safety inspections like motorcycle-only checkpoints, and wiretaps or other types of surveillance. It is not a guarantee against all searches and seizures. Some can be considered reasonable.
Who determines what is reasonable and what is not? If a search or arrest occurs that you think is illegal, most likely the question will be answered in a court of law.
Let’s break down a few examples.
Home: Without a warrant, search and seizure of a person’s home is presumed unreasonable. There are exceptions:
•You give consent to allow your home to be searched.
•You’re being arrested in your home.
•Officers at your door can see an illegal item in plain sight.
As a pedestrian: You are usually free to walk about in public, unmolested or detained for no apparent reason. You usually do not have to provide identification either. The exception:
•You are acting suspiciously or the officer has reasonable suspicion that you have committed or are about to commit a crime. This is known as a Terry stop. For the officer’s safety, he is permitted to do a “pat down” on the outside of your clothes to ensure you do not have any weapons.
Vehicles: You are protected from unreasonable traffic stops, but can be caught up in the so-called safety checkpoints or DUI checkpoints if allowed in your state. Your vehicle cannot be stopped and searched during a stop unless:
•You give consent.
•The officer has probable cause the vehicle has evidence of criminal activity.
•Illegal items are in plain sight within the car or on the bike.
•You’re crossing an international border.
•A narcotic-detection dog singles an alert on your vehicle.
•During a legal traffic stop, the driver and passengers can be subjected to a “pat down” for officer safety.
Highway checkpoints, if allowed by your state, are legal for the purpose of detecting sobriety (DUI checkpoints). These checkpoints are to be brief and a search of the person or vehicle is not allowed except with probable cause a crime has been committed (OWI). Highway checkpoints are not allowed for the purpose of discovery and interdiction of illegal narcotics.
While the Fourth Amendment protects against unreasonable search and seizure, remember that the Fifth Amendment protects against self-incrimination. Therefore, you should refrain from answering questions or engaging in seemingly harmless conversations with law enforcement. Rarely are the conversations harmless. Another important point to remember: Police are not required to inform you or your Miranda rights unless you are actually arrested and not merely detained. They do not have to inform you of your right to leave, to remain silent or to refuse questions and searches.
One last scary item; the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Salinas v. Texas, 369 W.W. 3d 176 that remaining silent can be used as evidence of guilt in court. It’s a terrible ruling that attacks the principles of the Fifth Amendment, but it is what the court ruled. It’s important that a person invokes his right to silence instead of merely remaining silent. Justice Alito explained, “To prevent the privilege against self-incrimination from shielding information not properly within its scope, a witness who ‘desires the protection of privilege…must claim it’ at the time he relies on it.”
We have little defense from the covert surveillance techniques being utilized daily, such as the capture of cellphone conversations, license plate cameras and other electronic data collection, but we can assert some rights in personal encounters with police at traffic stops or during field interrogations. Know your rights!

Operation Gratitude Announces “New Recruit” Care Package Program—
Operation Gratitude is excited to announce the launch of its “New Recruit” Care Package program to thank our newest members of the Military for stepping forward and devoting the next several years of their lives in service to our nation. Upon Graduation from “Boot Camp,” each New Recruit is handed a unique package of goodies from Operation Gratitude in a new custom-designed box.
The New Recruit Care Package Program is already in full swing at both Marine Corps Recruiting Depots in San Diego and Parris Island, and at the Navy’s Great Lakes Recruit Training Command in Illinois. The organization expects to bring the Army and Air Force training centers on board in 2015.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive:

In addition to an assortment of snacks, hygiene, entertainment and hand-made items, each Care Package includes a “Loved One Medallion,” a specially designed Operation Gratitude keepsake for the New Recruit to share with a special family member or friend. The Medallion thanks loved ones for their support and lets them know that the American people stand “hand in hand” with them.
“We hope the recruits get two things from receiving these packages,” said Angel Cuevas, Director of Operations for Operation Gratitude. “First, we hope it lifts their morale. Second, we want them to know someone, somewhere cares. This is the generosity of the American public. We are supporting their mission wherever it takes them, and we don’t want them to be alone.”
The distribution of all New Recruit Care Packages is handled directly with the Military training centers.
Just as with all of our care package programs, every American can support the New Recruit Packages by organizing collection drives, writing letters, hand-crafting scarves, hats and bracelets, or contributing financially.

RESULTS FROM THE BIG APPLE: 2014 J&P Ultimate Builder–
Ahhh, New York. It’s the largest show on the IMS circuit with the greatest number of enthusiasts, custom bikes and media presence. Since it’s the Big Apple, you never know who will make their way into the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. This year MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden made a guest appearance on Saturday and Marky Mark slipped in on Friday to check out the custom bikes.
Forty custom bikes were presented in three classes on the red carpet for the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. The MOD Custom class features street bikes with OEM cases and frames. FreeStyle is an unlimited class where anything goes and the Retro MOD class is for any bike that is older than 1984.
From the opening bell at 1PM on Friday to 5PM on Sunday the show was packed with guys checking the custom sleds and with many of them on the floor getting access to the fine details of the builds.
Retro and innovation was the name of the game for the 2014 show. The bike that garnered the greatest amount of enthusiasm from the builders was a custom fabricated café racer from Sam Coleman. The big gnarly blue lump turned out to be a 3-cylinder 1000cc Kubota tractor engine with turbo… Bananas!
The awards kicked off on Sunday at 4PM with Steve Iacona of Iacona Customs taking the American Iron Magazine Editor’s Choice award for his kick only Softail. You will be seeing his bike featured in an upcoming issue of the Magazine.
FreeStyle J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Winner
George Stinsman of Chaos Cycles took the win in FreeStyle with his latest creation called “The Menace”. It’s a Knucklehead with paint by Bob Mango. George calls it his Hot Rod and it embodies design queues from sport bikes, old school and new school bikes. The bike features a custom lakester-style exhaust, ISR hand controls , hand built FXR-ish frame, hand formed gas tank and fender. Bare Knuckle Choppers provided the velocity stack and Baker the tranny.

Evan Favaro’s part time job is the go-to guy for Orange County Choppers. He does the fabrication for Paul Sr. In order for him to get his TV gig he flew all the way to California to secure his job 45 minutes away.
When he is not on the small screen he’s building bikes. His latest winning café racer features a Ducati swingarm, CBR100RR front end and custom tail section with integrated oil tank and battery box. Named Barely Legal, it was painted by Toon Town Paint. It received the full engine update with race cam, CR carb, head work and all new internals.

Austin Andrella of Austin Martin Originals built his winning bike from his backyard garage. Over the past few years he has been racking the awards for his amazing bike builds. Double D’s faced stiff competition but in the end the 1981 Yamaha XS took the point. The bobber features a retro Hot Rod color scheme applied by Steve Hennis Flame Thrower Customs, all new electronics, polished covers, AMO one-off hard tail, vintage Avon tires, stainless spokes and powder coated rims.

At one time, there were two Rockford newspapers, the Rockford Morning Star and the Rockford Register Republic. Some years ago, the newspaper was changed to one, the Register Star. There was also the Green Flash, a newspaper printed by the News Tower but handled and sold by Seidler News Agency, a local magazine distributor.
The Green Flash was sold on the streets, certain stores and hotels. I delivered both the Rockford Morning Star and the Rockford Register Republic and sold the Green Flash on a street corner. At that time, the daily paper and the Green Flash sold for 5 cents, and the Sunday paper was 15 cents.
Those who sold the Green Flash were paid 1.5 cents per paper. One hundred papers would equal $1.50. The one paper was delivered Tuesday through Sunday, and the daily paper was delivered Monday through Saturday. For many years now, we have had one newspaper, the Register Star which comes out seven days a week. Truly, Rockford shall forever live in the shadow of the News Tower.

Lake Okoboji is a popular vacation and recreation spot in northwest Iowa, including an amusement park named Arnold’s Park. It has some beautiful old cars in it, along with recreations of storefronts and the way Arnold’s Park looked in the 50s and 60s.
The Roof Garden was a well-known dance hall, drawing people from long distances to dance to big-name rock & roll bands.

I’VE GOT THE XMAS VIBE—I don’t feel like doing anything. Maybe because I picked up some mung and feel like shit.
But we are always plugging away. Tomorrow should be a good one. I will post my first Arch Motorcycle story. It should be good. We are covering all the elements, design, and the mastermind’s thoughts as he stumbled through this process. It will blow your mind.
I need to order another Elvgren Pin-up Calendar. Hell, I’m burning daylight. We need to ship out gifts and Xmas cards. And I need to interview Junior at Lifestyle Cycles about Raul’s bike. I also need a couple of hours to wrap up another Cantina episode.
It’s should be good, and the shit is heating up, plus there’s a new girl working behind the bar. Hang On, and don’t stress about the holidays. Drink Jack and stay warm.
