Hey, It’s a quiet Sunday at the steaming Bikernet headquarters. Here’s a taste of our projects. I’m working on the Salt Shaker Exhaust system this afternoon. I need to send the mock, Accurate Engineering Engine back to Berry Wardlaw and get all the pieces sent out to powdercoating. The sheet metal his headed to Jim Murrilo. We’re going with a heavy gold metalflake frame to match the Le Pera solo seat. The sheetmetal will grab a coat of black, maybe satin and Yvonne Mecialis will handle the Bikernet bomber girl on the tanks.

I swear I will write a couple of Bonneville bike update techs over the next couple of days. I need to run to Performance Machine for another brake caliper anchor bracket; we have more European bike features coming and a couple of US features in the wings. We’re going to deliver a story on how the bikes were picked for postage stamp art. And we have a report on another female rider that died. That’s two too many. Let’s hit the news:

DETROIT BROS. POKER RUN AND RALLY– When: May 20th, 2006, Where: 23510 Woodward Ave. Ferndale, MI 48220.

FREE LINKS ON BIKERNET–Just a note to let you know that our free links and listings are just that, free. Occasionally when two folks are launching info at the same time, it gets crossed up. Let us know when that happens and we will correct it, for free, but you need to be patient. The same goes with the free links. First we are forced to sober-up the webmaster. It’s all downhill from there. –Bandit
Here’s a note from one of our readers: I was trying to add our shop info to your links however it took me to a site that said “hold up cowboy” and listed several items that I did include saying I needed to include. So I was wondering if you could possibly help me out. I will attach the link for you to look over. The name of the shop is Shamrock Cycles and Performance, located in Austin,TX shop phone is 512-973-3446, my email is

D&D DYNA CONTEST CONTROVERSY– I’m also with JC on the dyna contest. It seemed unusually odd that the bike in first made such rapid gains on everyone. It doesn’t matter to me if I won or not. I’m just extremely proud to see my bike on your site. I’ve done all the work myself with the exception of the paint. The bike started out as a bonestock ’04 lowrider. All the black engine parts came from ex Hot Bike editor Howard Kelly, who?s been after me to try and get a feature in a mag.
It would be cool to see more bikes like this in rags. I’m an FXR and Dyna fanatic. The handling on these bikes are awesome as I’m sure you well know.
I really like Mike Lombardo’s bike in the contest. Hat’s off to all of you that entered and competed fairly! There’s a lot of nice rides on there. How about some features for some of us?

I’ve attached a few pics of my bike as well as a shot of it on a road trip before I completed it.
This bike is a daily rider and will be making the trip to Sturgis this year from Louisiana. Have a good ‘un!
–Dwayne “Blackie” Clark
Dwayne, we will make sure the voting is absolutely fair and stuffing is considered. Like it says in the small print: The judges’ decision is final. You’re right. You’re bike is sharp. Hell, I’m building a FXR based bike right now.–Bandit

BIKERNET NOISE TESTING–It’s another project coming to fruition on Bikernet. We should have completed road tests by the end of next week. We will make them available for anyone fighting noise issues or working with legislators. Here’s another example why this effort is critical–Bandit

Officer Bailey was on an enforcement stop on the right shoulder of northbound I-15 south of Ranchero Road. While speaking with the violator, an errant driver struck Officer Bailey’s motorcycle, the violator’s vehicle, and Officer Bailey. Officer Bailey was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center via helicopter where he succumbed to his injuries at 2346 hours.
Officer Bailey had served with the California Highway Patrol for 10 years and was assigned to the Rancho Cucamungo office. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons, and parents.

KIDS AND CHROME AND HAWAIIN BIKER TO TOUR MAJOR LEAQUE STADIUMS ON BASEBALL-THEMED HARLEY– Jack Gagen has two passions in life: baseball and motorcycles. The resident of Hawaii is fulfilling a lifelong dream this summer—to ride his motorcycle to every major league baseball stadium in the country on his baseball-themed Harley-Davidson.
Gagen has logos for every major league team emblazoned on his bike, and the seat is customized to look like a baseball glove. Custom painting portrays several baseball-related themes, including hot dogs, Cracker Jacks, scoreboards, and fans in the stands. There’s no doubt that this is one committed fan.
One more thing Jack feels strongly about is kids. He and his wife Marilyn never had any of their own, but have “adopted” the grandchildren of friends as their godchildren. Part of his stadium tour will be to promote the cause of “Kids & Chrome,” a fundraiser for children with special needs, held during the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. Gagen is a member of Hamsters, USA, an elite motorcycling group with members around the world. The Hamsters have donated heavily to the children’s organization through Kids & Chrome, and will have a room named for them at the new children’s facility, now under construction.
Kids & Chrome is a dinner with auctions and raffles of two motorcycles to help build a new outpatient center in Rapid City, SD, near Sturgis, to provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies, plus other services for kids with disabilities. It is the second year for the event, set for Wednesday, August 9. Gagen hopes to get people to check out the event on their website, http://www.kidsandchrome.com/.
Gagen asks nothing from the major league teams except a secure place to park his one-of-a-kind bike during the games so that fans can view it. “That bike is my baby,” says Gagen. “But there are real kids who could use some help, too. I’m hoping to grab people’s curiosity enough to get them to maybe buy a chance on one of the motorcycle raffles or donate to Kids and Chrome.”

BIKERNET RUN TO THE FLATS– Keep me posted on when you are leaving for the Flats. My plan is to be there for most of the week. If it works out that I can meet you guys somewhere the first night I will. Item #2 … I was with Sonny and Zee for Sonny’s 49th anniversary party with the Angels. Zee mentioned that back in ’98 before the big raid she was on the cover of Tattoo … after the raid they confiscated her “Library” of magazines and she no longer has a copy and wondered if you could see if there was one around at the magazine that she could get a hold of. I told her I would contact you and find out.
I am really looking forward to the Flats. I might get over to your neck of the woods this summer. My daughter just took a summer job at Seaworld so that begs a weekend run to the land of mandatory head gear. Keep me posted and if you need anything you know where to call

CANTINA MARRIAGE COUNSELING– A husband and wife go to a counselor after 15 years of marriage The counselor asks them what the problem is and the wife goes into a tirade, listing every problem they have ever had in the 15 years they’ve been married She goes on and on and on.
Finally, the counselor gets up, goes around the desk, embraces the woman, and kisses her passionately.
The woman shuts up and sits quietly in a daze. The counselor turns to the husband and says “That is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do that?”
The husband says, “I can bring her in on Monday and Wednesday, but on Friday I’m fishing.”

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION ANSWERED–I have an ’03 Bagger I just had some crane gear drive cams installed in, and the valve train noise is driving me crazy!! The guy who did the install said that Crane cams are common for making that noise, and that maybe adjusting the pushrods will help. Also, he installed some lower fairings and said that the noise could be trapped in because of those.
I need to know what’s going on. Before these cams were in there was a pair of Andrews gear drive that made ok power, were quiet, but pinged under load in warmer weather. That was the goal of the Crane to get rid of that.
–Mike
When doin a gear drive install gear lash must be checked on the cam gears!! It’s not just a bolt in deal. Andrews stuff is usually good to go.
You didn’t mention which cam. Hi perf. cams-high lift will make noise. I like Bobby Woods cams myself.
Oh yeah if your bike has EFI that pinging could have been tuned out with either Race Tuner or PowerCommander.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES WITH “SCHOOLS OUT OLD SKOOL, NEW SCHOOL, ALL(s)KOOL” MOTORCYCLE THEMED EXHIBIT TO BE HELD AT THUNDER ROAD, COINCIDING WITH STURGIS BIKE WEEK 2006– The journey continues with Michael Lichter’s motorcycle themed art exhibition at Thunder Road in Sturgis S.D., coinciding with Sturgis Bike Week 2006, a gathering of several hundred thousand bikers in the Black Hills region of South Dakota each August. In the five previous years the exhibition has been held at the Journey Museum in Rapid City; the change of venues to Thunder Road will allow access to more motorcycle enthusiasts.
“School’s Out; Old Skool, New School, All(s)Kool,” will examine the often over-used terms “Old Skool” and “New School” with an art exhibit featuring custom motorcycles, as well as motorcycle themed photography and painting. Twenty-four of the most widely recognized motorcycle builders in the industry will display bikes showcasing their individual approaches and innovative design ideas, which encompass both new and old school styling. The art on the walls will feature four artists closely tied to the motorcycle world. Timothy White will be exhibiting photography from his recent book on Indian Larry, art that reflects on their years of friendship, shared times in New York, and many road trips.
Joe Richardson, who has painted many of Billy Lane’s customs, will be debuting a 15? wide interactive sculpture along with some traditionally striped panels. Robert Pradke, who is known for the “chemical skin art” he has applied to many of Indian Larry’s bikes, will display pinstriping, flames, flakes, and candies applied to everything from metal to organic surfaces. Michael Lichter, who has been documenting the “biker Lifestyle” in the pages of Easyriders magazine since the 1970s will display photographic prints from his archive.

Motorcycle builders in the exhibit include: Aaron Greene (Paramount Customs, NV) Arlen Ness (Arlen Ness Enterprises, CA,) Bill Dodge (Blings Cycles, NJ,) Billy Lane (Choppers Inc., FL,) Brian Klock (Klockworks, SD,) Cory Ness (Arlen Ness Enterprises, CA,) Dave Perewitz (Cycle Fab, MA,) Donnie Smith (Donnie Smith Custom Cycles, MN,) Eddie Trotta (Thunder Cycles, FL,) Hank Young (Young Choppers and Hotrods, GA,) Indian Larry (an original Indian Larry custom, NY,) Indian Larry Legacy (Paul Cox & Keino Sasaki, NY,) Jerry Covington (Covington’s Cycle City, OK,) Kendall Johnson (Kendall Johnson Customs, NC,) Kim Suter (K. C. Creations, KS,) Kirk Taylor (Custom Design Studios, CA,) Mark Warrick (Soncy Road Speed & Custom, TX,) Michael Prugh (Independet Cycle Inc., SD,) Paul Yaffe (Paul Yaffe Originals, AZ,) Roland Sands (Performance Machine, CA,) Steve Broyles (Stevenson’s Cycle, MI,) Twisted Choppers (Jason Kangas & Kai Morrison, SD,) Vince Doll (Redneck Engineering, SC,) and Warren Lane (The Neighborhood King, FL).
The “School’s Out” exhibition, which has been made possible by the generous support of Metzeler Tires and Sturgis Bike Week Productions, will be open to the public on Saturday, August 5th and remain open through Saturday, August 12th from 11 a.m. until midnight. Admission to the Thunderdome will be $10 during the AMD World Championship of Bike Building show August 5-7, $5 during the Rats Hole show August 11th, and FREE August 8-10 and August 12. The public is invited to meet many of the artists and motorcycle builders who will be present on Tuesday, August 8th from 4:00 ? 6:00pm.

THERE’S MORE, BUT FUCK IT–I’m jumping back into the shop. Okay, here’s more for our article line-up. We are working on a Softail Standard road test which should be launched this week. Layla is working on a Blast road test and we’re laughing our asses off. Get this, she likes the 400 cc single already. We also have a Dyna/Victory comparison test coming from John Gilbert, if he ever delivers.

Here’s a bike from Larry Curik of Lone Star Choppers. This bike sports the first all inclusive EFI system designed by Mil Blair and built by the guys at BDL. Watch for the tech. We should feature the bike this coming week. I also have a few surprise articles coming to the Cantina. Hang on. Oh, I will try like hell to launch another European winner today and maybe, if you’re lucky, a wheel spacer tech from Rick Krost of U.S. Choppers. Hang on.
Let’s have a Margarita, whatta ya say?
Ride forever,
–Bandit
