BIKERNET SUNDAY POST – MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES

The wall

Image of memorial wall in Florida, by Rogue

Hey,

I’m in a daze today. I worked on the 45 all day yesterday. I believe I accomplished something, even if it was wrong. I crawled into bed last night beat. Jay called requesting lift time to build a set of exhaust for his first full custom. The pressure’s on. I need to finish the Salt Shaker and yank it off the lift. I’ve got two days, but today is Sunday Post until noon, then I have till midnight to work on the bike.

Tomorrow we can work on his pipes until noon, then we’re shutting down for a barbecue. I’ll tell you more about it after the news:

MO’ INFO ON THE AIRPLANE BIKES–Another interesting fact about the Sopwith camel WWI Allied Fighter, was that it could turn right much tighter than it could turn left because of the enormous torque of the rotary engine.

I’ve attached, a couple of pics of my own bike, nearly finished. It’s my first Harley based bike I’ve made most everything from the frame to the fenders and saddle. I’m going to make a tank too. Hardest part of the build is my budget of ?1500 (less than $3000). I’m so pleased with the sheet metal work, I’m planning not to painting it, just letting it rust (won’t take long in England). When it gets to thin I’ll just make some new ones!

WORDS FROM BANDIT’S CANTINA BROTHERSHIP– Are you tired of those sissy-ass “friendship” poems that always sound good, but never actually come close to reality? Well, here is a series of promises that actually speak of true friendship:

1. When you are sad — I will help you get drunk and plot revenge against the sorry bastard who made you sad.

2. When you are blue — I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile — I will know you finally got laid.

4. When you are scared — I will rag on you about it every chance I get.

5. When you are worried — I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse it could be until you quit whining.

6. When you are confused — I will use little words.

7. When you are sick — Stay the hell away from me until you are well again. I don’t want whatever you have.

8. When you fall — I will point and laugh at your clumsy ass.

9. This is my oath….. I pledge it to the end. “Why?” you may ask;

“because you are my friend.”

Remember…….A good friend will help you move…..a REALLY good friend will help you move a body…….let me know if you ever need me to bring a shovel.

PRO-GUN BILL INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS– Pro-gun Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) is getting set to chip away at the mountain of gun control laws and regulations that are hampering gun owners in this country.

Under current law, a person who travels to, say, a gun show out-of-state and buys a handgun from a licensed dealer must have the firearm shipped to a second gun dealer in the buyer’s home state.

As gun control laws have been added piecemeal over the years, it has forced gun owners to deal with conflicting and redundant requirements. Furthermore, the interstate requirements for buying a gun have needlessly forced gun dealers to ship firearms via commercial carriers, thus subjecting them to being lost, damaged or stolen.

To counteract this, Rep. Renzi is set to introduce the Firearm Transfer Improvement Act in the next few days. Renzi says that because gun dealers must comply with the laws of two different states in addition to federal law, these regulations are both “redundant and costly.” It is bad enough that the national government has created an unconstitutional federal background check system, but we still have this 1968 interstate ban left over.

“My legislation simply states that federal law and the law of the state of the seller must be complied with for all firearms sales,” Renzi said. “It also applies the same rules to rifles and shotguns, which are currently handled differently than handguns.”

In other words, the Renzi bill will allow you to travel out-of-state to purchase firearms in a way that you have not been able to do since 1968. Imagine that you live in Virginia and you are traveling to Missouri for Christmas. You stop at a gun show in West Virginia to buy your mom and dad a matched pair of commemorative Colt .45s.

ACTION: Please urge your congressman to become an original cosponsor of the Renzi bill. This bill still does not have a number, but you can refer to it as the Firearm Transfer Improvement Act.

To identify your Representative, as well as to send a message via e-mail, see the Legislative Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm on the GOA website.

THE DUKE DAY– Born Marion Morrison on this day in 1907 in Winterset, Iowa, John ‘Duke’ Wayne became the archetypical image of the American hero. His fifty-year film career began in the 1930s in low-budget Westerns.

The Duke’s first major role was in Stagecoach where he played the part of the Ringo Kid. It was while he was working on this film that John Wayne began his long-term association with director John Ford. The two worked so well together that Wayne was cast in Ford’s top pictures, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, They Were Expendable, and The Quiet Man.

Wayne was most often cast in Westerns and war movies, winning an Academy Award for his performance in True Grit in 1969, and directing and starring in the 1960 epic western, The Alamo, and the 1968 war film, The Green Berets (prompted by his superpatriotism).

Critics panned him, audiences loved him. The big, slow-talking actor was not only a superpatriot, but a super hero. And he played that role in his personal life, too. Battling cancer, and surviving his first cancer operation, he said that he had “licked the Big C.” His final role (1976) was in another western, The Shootist. He played the part of a gunfighter who had cancer. The Duke died in 1979. This was one fight he couldn’t win.

John ‘Duke’ Wayne once gave some advice to would-be actors: “Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much.” It was good advice for all.

BIKERNET PHILOSOPHICAL LESSON–Little progress can be made by merely attempting to repress what is evil; our great hope lies in developing what is good.

BUBS DENNIS MANNING TO BE INDUCTED INTO MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME– The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum has announced that Denis Manning is amongst the nine individuals to be inducted into their Hall of Fame for 2006.

Manning, is a noted land speed motorcycle builder and began his career as a part of the USA Drag Racing team in England at the age of 19. Denis took inspiration from childhood idol Mickey Thompson and headed for the Bonneville Salt Flats.

At 24, Denis Manning designed and built the Harley Davidson powered streamliner that Cal Rayborn rode to break the world record held by Don Vesco in 1970. Denis is currently building his 7th streamliner in an attempt to again hold the world record for fastest motorcycle on earth. Having worked and built streamliners for many of the top motorcycle manufactures, including Triumph and Norton, Denis is currently using a custom designed V4 engine in his streamliner.

BUBs logo

In 2004 Denis created the only land speed event at Bonneville that is solely dedicated to motorcycles. The American Motorcyclist Association and the F?d?ration Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) sanction this annual event. This is the only event that currently offers multiple individuals the opportunity to attempt both national and world land speed records for motorcycles.

bubs 1

In 2004 Denis was the recipient of the AMA Sports “Sportsperson of the Year” award and continues to promote the sport of land speed racing.

Manning is also the founder and owner of BUB Enterprises, an aftermarket motorcycle exhaust manufacture. His company has continued to be on the cutting edge of the industry over the last 25 years, and has expanded from Cruisers to include Sport bike and ATV systems to its line.

On his induction to the Hall of Fame: “If you consider all of the people that have ridden a motorcycle, and the number of people that are in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, it is a great honor to be inducted”

The induction ceremony takes place in October 2006 in Pickerington, Ohio.

AVON TIRE FILES–We snuck into the Washington state Avon offices and snatched some inside info:

Avon now makes the new AM41 130/60VR23 Venom R Universal. That’s right….A 23-inch tire designed for front or rear fitment.

Attached are a few photos I was able to steal of Jesse Jurrens with the new 20-inch Venom R rear tire. They built the bike for an upcoming episode for the Discovery Channel Biker Build Off. I guess they started off with a 600lb block of aluminum for the rear wheel and cut it down to 37lbs. Apparently the wheel cost around $12K after all the milling, heat treating, polishing, chroming, etc! Unfortunately didn’t use the new 23″ for the build.

The guy in the photo is Michael Prugh, you might know him. He’s the head designer at Independent Cycle and was an integral part in the bike build.

avon venom banner

Now a little info on the tire –

Avon AM42 Venom R 280/40VR20 rear tire
Max Load – 1,279lbs
“V” Speed Rated up to 149mph
Max Air Pressure – 42psi
Recommended Rim Width – 10.0 inches
Min Rim Width – 9.5 inches
Max Rim Width – 10.5 inches
Overall Width – 279mm/10.98 inches (measured on 10.0″ rim)
Overall Diameter – 731mm/28.78 inches (measured on 10.0″ rim)

Kevlar belts are used instead of steel. Kevlar is lighter and stronger and won’t rip the rear fender apart after doing burnouts till the tire blows. Kevlar also resists tire growth at speeds…..more so than steel.

BUSTER JUMPS ON CANTINA SOAPBOX–” The Good Guys VS. The Bad Guys”– Went out to a local meeting at a biker establishment where the local ” biker ” community was to meet with local police officials about new noise enforcement tactics in our area. So I jumped on my bike and headed down, parked close to the front door where there was space open and came inside to hear what was going on. I’ll go ahead and admit that I am one of those ” young punks with straight pipes” and yah, I guess I am a newbie compared to a lot of the folks who hang at this joint.

That being said the police captain was speaking with the people inside about issues concerning the “noise enforcement in San Pedro, California, and recent ticketing of Walker’s Cafe customers. Most of what the police said was standard issue, but it was cool to see them make time to speak with the folks who are being affected by this ticketing. Maybe I am just some fucked up punk rock kid with wacky ethics but a lot of what I heard downright pissed me off. “It’s the out of towners,” was one thing I heard. “It’s the sport bike guys” another couple guys chimed in.

Let’s all take a second to play the blame game. It’s sad when “bikers” view guys on different bikes or coming from different towns as being any different from the local crowd who hang here and ride here. LAME. Then someone was quick to point out the old, loud, custom Chevy’s that come down to that area and picnic and hang out in the park. Again, LAME. While this meeting was going on I couldn’t help but notice the police helicopter fly over and drown out the voices of this meeting. Hmmmmmmmmm? But let’s get to the point.

I live less then 2 miles from this upscale area, in a middle class neighborhood, where we have drug dealing, fights in the alleys , domestic violence and kids getting run over by cars. Why is it that 15 motor cops can set up and write tickets so the rich suburbanites don’t have to hear our nasty motorcycles rather then deal with real crimes?? Seems to me priories are way out of whack. I spoke to the Captain about my concern and she assured me she had to allegiance to these home owners, and she isn’t from our area .

One can’t help but wonder if the yuppie e-mail campaign and constant phone calls from the affluent neighborhood, forced police reaction while the rest of us are at work. While we wrangle with decibel levels and loopholes to survive, more and more bikers are baffling up and complying. To each is own, I always say, but I’d rather fight and lose than to comply right off the bat. It’s just a matter of principle to me. We got young people fighting and dying for “freedom” in the middle east and back home we can’t modify our motorcycle exhaust. Does anyone else see the irony here?? I even heard the “old guard” saying it’s time we take responsibility and tone down. I can’t help but wonder if some of these guys are the outlaw bikers I used to worship as a kid running.

I’d rather upset a few home owners and stay alive then be quiet and get hit by some cage that “doesn’t see me” or “didn’t know I was there”. As I left the meeting, my bike backfired , shitty timing I guess. Got myself an earfull from a young lady who works or hangs out at this spot. Kind of a bummer I consider myself a good guy, but now I’m wondering who is who anymore?? FTW!

–B.C from SP

P.S. Bikernet Black-Market John handed out Bikernet Independent Noise Studies and the cops were impressed. They have decreased their ticketing procedures and eliminated decibel check-points. They will still pull over bikers who overtly abuse their exhaust systems.

SALT SHAKER MODS STILL COMING FROM JOHN REED–Did you get a Baker tranny with the oil bag underneath? It is deeper than the OEM/REVTECH one.

If I was going to modify the lower bracket, I would cut the existing 1×1-inch tube at an angle from the frame tube, weld my 1″x1″ tube on the front of it, and maybe weld a piece of 1/16-inch thick cold rolled steel on the edge left on the original tube,

–John.

That’s what I’m working on this afternoon.–Bandit

BACK TO THE LIFT TIME–The sun is shinning, the air is clear and it’s time to hit the shop and work on the Salt Shaker.

Watch for reports next week. Also we have a Panhead tech on rebuilding heads, the Softail standard road test is finally finished. The girls are working on a Buell Blast road test, which we’re all embarrassed about. We have a report from Paul Garson on the Exile new shop Open House and burnout fest, and an event feature on Seth’s All American, Santa Maria, bike show is headed our way.

Okay, so honor our vets on Memorial Day. I was a three-time Navy Vietman vet. I’ll go for a beer. Let’s support the guys and gals currently holding the line in Iraq. Tomorrow we’ll break out any bikes sitting in mothballs and fire ’em up. Maybe we’ll get some shots.
