From Russell R.

Hey,

Had to hit the road early this morning on the first annual Orangewood Promise Ride kids’ charity ride to Lake Forrest, California. I met up with a handful of Hamsters for breakfast then we peeled south to hook up with 75 other riders, including Drew Bledsoe from the Dallas Cowboys, to raise money for abused kids.

The threat of rain held the crowd at bay, but it was still good to roll into the sunlit wind. It was actually a beautiful brisk day to test out the True-Track, Carlini’s crash bar eliminators and Terry’s Terminal Velocity EFI system. All went well, except a brother on a 103- Screamin’ Eagle Fatboy inadvertently went down on the freeway.

The pack braked and he must have hit something extremely slick in his lane. The front wheel slipped silently out from under him. “It was like slow motion,” He said. “I was even able to flick the kill switch before hitting the concrete.”

He was unhurt. We pulled him back to his feet and hit the road. Another day in paradise. Let’s hit the news:

BIKERNET RELIGIOUS ADVICE– Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn’t find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, “Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey”. Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, “Never mind, I found one.”

ANOTHER BIKERNET REPORTER FROM THE FAR EAST–Hey Bandit you have asked me to send you some pictures , so here we go…

This is me and my other Italian bitch , a rat 1000cc 230k miles 1980 Motoguzzi, California , on a trip we have made recently to the Egyptian border .

Most of the trip was off road on gravel roads where we camped onder the desert stars and it was mind blowing . My other bikes are a 1997 Sporty 1200 , 1990 FXRP and the Guzzis which are my favorite partners on long excursions .

KING QUESTION– I am wondering if you can let me know the distance it would take for a 2005 Road King fuel injected to go from 0 to 60 MPH.

I am talking from stopped to ending a 60MPH.

BIKERNET SETS A GOAL TO BETTER THE LACK OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN– Because I’m a man, when I lock my keys in the car, I will fiddle with a coat hanger long after hypothermia has set in. Calling the AAA is not an option. I will win.

Because I’m a man, when the car isn’t running very well, I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know what I’m looking at. If another man shows up, one of us will say to the other, “I used to be able to fix these things, but now with all these computers and everything, I wouldn’t know where to start.” We will then drink a couple of beers and break wind, as a form of holy communion.

Because I’m a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You’re a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you, this is no problem.

Because I’m a man, when one of our appliances stops working, I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence that this will just cost me twice as much once the repair person gets here and has to put it back together.

Because I’m a man, I must hold the television remote control in my hand while I watch TV. If the thing has been misplaced, I may miss a whole show looking for it…..though one time I was able to survive by holding a calculator…..(applies to engineers mainly).

Report: Many Jobs Lack Benefits To Cut– NEW YORK-According to a report published in the February issue of Forbes magazine, employers are reporting difficulty finding job benefits to eliminate. “Health insurance, matching 401(k) contributions, lunch breaks, and various allowances and reimbursements are all fair game for cost-cutting-that is, when they are offered by employers in the first place,” staff writer Jason Smills wrote. “By not extending these perks to their employees in the first place, however, American business owners find themselves lacking the crucial ability to take them away.”

Smills noted that 97 percent of the possible benefit cuts in American jobs had already been made, reducing the potential for greater company profits and executive-level benefits to “alarming” lows.

MRF SOUND AND EMISSIONS INITIATIVE– The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is currently involved in a Sound and Emissions Initiative to make certain all motorcyclists, small shops and custom builders are represented in the development of national and international sound and emission actIons.

On February 3rd and 4th 2006, Dave Dwyer, MRF Assistant in Government Relations, and Kirk Willard, MRF Vice President attended the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati meeting with several representatives from the aftermarket industry including MIC American V-Twin Committee members, media and an advisor to Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). Legislative issues relating to current and proposed EPA regulations and proposed sound regulations were discussed. Tele-conferences and additional meetings have and will continue to be conducted in the future.

On February 7th, 2006, MRF Vice President of Government Relations, Jeff Hennie and MRF Vice President Kirk Willard met with EPA officials from the Office of Air and Radiation in Washington D.C. to discuss and clarify the MRF position and review statements made by EPA representatives during a Regulation 41 Informal group meeting on motorcycle noise emissions in Milwaukee, WI conducted under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The MRF presented information related to recent developments by both the motorcycle industry and rider groups concerning motorcycle sound issues.

Also in February 2006 the International Motorcycle Cooperation Group comprised of MRF, Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA), American Motorcyclists’ Association (AMA) and Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme (FIM) met in Geneva, Switzerland to address sound and emission issues currently being discussed by the United Nations.

Furthermore, MRF Vice President Kirk Willard attended the fifth Regulation 41informal group meeting on motorcycle sound emissions, the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29) and the Working Party on Noise (GRB) . During those meetings FEMA and the MRF discovered exhaust emissions limit values were being reintroduced for consideration within the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) test platform. In addition, there was lengthy informal discussion in Geneva about efforts being made in Europe to begin work on a stricter emissions and noise standards.

In light of this development , Bob Tomlins, FEMA Assistant General Secretary, will be representing the International Motorcycle Cooperation Group (MRF, FEMA, FIM and AMA) in Pune, India April 20-21st, 2006.

In conjunction with international participation, MRF members and SMROs are visiting Washington DC to lobby members of Congress. Members of both the House and the Senate are receiving updates from their constituents on these key issues.

In addition, the MRF anticipates several meetings related to these issues during the International Motorcycle Safety Conference taking place the last weekend of March in California. MRF board members Jeff Hennie, Kirk Willard, and Jay Jackson will be in attendance and while the focus of the meetings is safety, we expect a dialog regarding emission and sound issues to take place as well.

In an effort to tie all this information together to benefit our nations’ motorcyclists the MRF has scheduled a meeting at the EPA’s National Vehicle Fuel Emissions Laboratory in early April to discuss both emission and sound issues.

“The overwhelming response the MRF has received from our EPA questionnaire and the amount and level of discussions we are having with these various stakeholders convinces me we are on the right path. We will continue our efforts to represent and protect our interests with what appears to be the eventual move toward tighter noise and exhaust emission limit values in a significantly emerging global environment,” said Kirk Willard. “Our participation at home and abroad will be instrumental in ensuring law makers, regulators and manufacturers will consider our point of view and listen to our concerns.”

BIKERNET KITCHEN INSTRUCTIONS–She was in the kitchen doing the boiled eggs for breakfast. He walks in and asks “What’s for breakfast?”

She turns to him and says, “You’ve got to make slow, passionate love to me this very moment”.

He, thinking it’s his lucky day, stands her over the kitchen table and they have sex.

Afterwards he says, “What was that all about?”

She says “The egg timer’s broken!”

TIN MAN EVALUATES BIKERNET SOUND STRATEGY– Saw the news! Now the question about standards comes to mind: Exactly WHERE will the measurements be taken? While it’s true that we are inundated by noise constantly, and how much is a shock, really, we have proximity issues to add to the transitory nature of noise. My neighbor and the leaf blower he uses every Saturday and Sunday is enough to wake me at 6am, so it’s loud. But, the average person is, what, about 5’6″ off the ground? Does proximity add to the equation? To be sure, measuring the DB an inch from the pipe is going to give a very different reading than at ear level, or standing on a curb, or in a living room some 30-60 feet from the street and through walls and insulation. So one problem with a ‘standard’ is WHERE to measure, as well as how long. Just some food for thought.

The rest looks great. Many people I’ve talked to agree that the sound of a motorcycle, and vtwins and sportbikes make distinctive sounds, cause them to look for bikes and be more vigilant. Stressing the concept that car manufacturers insulate drivers from the indignities of the road, tire noise, engine noise, etc., is a danger to both us and emergency vehicles (and, by proxy, ALL of us and our grandmas) is viable, I think.

If we must admit the fragility of our bikes, then we must do so at the expense of the SUV and pick up. I resist this as I feel it may be hypocritical, but if the question comes up we must be prepared to defend our position. Percentages of SUVs sold, number of registrations of bikes vs cars and SUVs, and, as you pointed out, mileage. Motorcycles are used to GO SOMEWHERE, so they are different from lawn mowers and the like.

I also agree with the position that if we are to have enforcement, there must be a standard with regard to the device and its usage. We also must attack the idea that we are easy to ‘profile’ and that such isn’t used to find hijack suspects, so why should bikers be picked on. A cheesy point to be sure, but we gotta use everything to fight. We can’t give in or we’ll be limited to riding in the 4th of July parade, an irony I am unwilling to accept.

HELP ‘EM OUT–I can’t handle stealing bikes. If you know anything, help them out. On a positive note I’m putting the finishing touches on the Terry Component Terminal Velocity tech tip. Next week we’ll post a bunch of articles including a Bonneville update and hopefully another Girl of Bikernet, if John Gilbert will quit fighting with his neighbors.

I’ve felt somewhat strange this last week. I’m a passionate bird when it comes to our riding freedoms and building custom motorcycles. I’ve come up with strange fighting back notions, but who the hell knows if I’m right. I do know it’s a matter of getting all our ducks in a row and presenting them at the right time, to the right peeps. At least all the parties in the industry are talking, hopefully a gathering of the best info by the best minds in the industry. I’ll feel more comfortable stepping back and writing about it. I’m not a politician.

That’s my job, but it’s up to all of us to support the people who spend their lives keeping our freedoms alive. Maybe the industry will throw in with the Motorcycle Rights community more in the future. Join your local motorcycle rights organization and I’ll continue to bring you minute-to- minute reports on all the progress with the EPA standards and noise issues. Here’s a slice of freedom motivation. The city council of Calabasas, California just passed an anti-smoking law in their town. A law against smoking, period, even outside, if you’re within 20 feet of a person who doesn’t like smoking.

How about a ban on motorcycles? Mike Osborn, from the legislative side of ABATE of California, told me recently. “We’re now the Indians, the underdogs. The government would take us out, if they had a chance.” We gotta stand tall, till the end.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
