Hey,

Here we are, a hot Sunday. I know you guys back east are forced to deal with sweltering humidity. I wouldn’t trade places with you for a million bucks, although it’s smokin’ here. Yesterday I had a goal to wire the V-Bike, 120-inch Panhead as much as possible. With the help of LA County Chop Rods, I installed ISR hand controls and ran the hydraulic brake lines. There’s nothing like a kit that supplies you with almost anything you need. I installed the clutch cable to the Baker 6-speed FXR transmission. I hauled ass to the powder coater with final matt-black parts, including my handmade and modified kick stand.

BDL

At the end of the day, as the girls started to pour into the headquarters from Long Beach, and stir up Gold Cadillac Margaritas, I shut down. I checked off everything I could possibly do to the bike without the Accurate Engineering Panhead engine (coming next week), the painted sheetmetal (due next week), the BDL primary system and a couple more ISR parts from LA County Chop Rods. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll wrap up the evening:

100 YEARS OF MOTORCYCLES IN WASHINGTON ONE WEEK AFTER STURGIS-You’d think that would be a daunting task, but Josh Bryan has a killer line-up for his 3-day festival, Including Gard Hollinger of LA County Chop Rods, the Indian Larry Crew, you name it. All the hot builders will be there a quick week after Sturgis. Check their web site for more info.

AMERICAN FREEDOM RIDERS IN ARIZONA– This note is to enlist your support for a motorcycle riding group which I, Danny Smith, and Rusty Childress have formed – American Freedom Riders. We are both riders and we are attempting to bring attention to the problem of illegal immigration in Arizona.

We have found that, by a huge majority, bikers want our borders secured and our current immigration laws enforced. We believe that we can organize large rides which will be fun for all participants as well as draw attention to the immigration problems we face. Some of our politicians are out of control and out of touch with what the people want.

The reaction to this idea from the biker community has been overwhelmingly positive and we are now planning our first ride. It is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 2nd and will stage at Childress Buick in Phoenix with well known public figures making short statements about the consequences of continued illegal immigration and then the riders will make a ride up into the pine trees with lunch and entertainment awaiting them.

We will be able to attract considerable press to the staging area and intend to have our statement heard on a local and national level. Hundreds of bikes revving their engines in unison make a good evening news story and are difficult to ignore – even for deaf politicians.

The bigger we can make our events, the better for exposure. This is why we are hoping that you will support us in getting the word out to everyone you know who is in any way associated with motorcycles. Riders, clubs, organizations, dealers, etc. We will make all of our rides fun and at the same time try to make our state a better place to live and bring up our families.

The website will be improved as we become more organized, but time is of the essence and we need your help to get the word out. We are also looking for organizational help in various parts of the state.

MAJOR LOS ANGELES GASOLINE ALLEY DEALERSHIP FOR SALE- That’s right, LA County Chop Rods, Saxon, Swift, Hell Bound, Titan, Independence and more, dealership is for sale right across Lincoln Blvd from Bartels’ Harley-Davidson in exclusive Marina Del Rey less than a mile from the water.

Gard Hollinger is not going out of business, but changing his focus to building wild customs and cutting edge parts in his Torrence facility. “Running both shops slows me down,” Gard said. “My heart is in being a builder and designer, not running a dealership.” The 2,000 square foot state-of-the-art, service department with two roll-up doors handles Big Dog and American Iron Horse service work.

Gardsshop

The 4,000 sq. ft. shop was remodeled to the tune of $80,000 four years ago. The lot has 2,500 sq. ft. of parking and additional parking is available in the back and on Lincoln Boulevard. The lease is still good for a year with an option for the future. The parts department holds a complete Light Speed dealer computer system and all the cool point of purchase display and ready to rock.

The price, more than reasonable. Shit, I wanted to jump into the deal myself, but the girls held me back.

THE BAFFLING STUDY–After Sturgis we’re going to study how exhaust baffles work. We may write an article for American Iron and Bikernet on exhaust technology working with Dewey, D&D and others in the industry. Here’s the latest from madman Dewey Jelen:

The 2 best baffles I made, I sent to a guy in Conn. He owns a company that does boat racing motors and he does a lot of H-D work in the winter. Has a dyno. Hell of a tuner. He picked up 3 hp and the tq. was the same. If you drill more holes in the baffle, you will get more hp. but the tq. starts to fall down. That’s how I came up with the idea. You need the exhaust to go thru the holes in the lower -mid rpms, and then you need a straight pipe {3500 – 6000 rpm } the ramp where the air goes up and thru the holes will open depending on the spring pressure. We can sell different baffles: TQ or RACE baffles will have a stronger spring pressure so the ramp opens later and race will have a light spring pressure so the ramp opens up sooner. You can look inside the pipe and see when the ramp opens and at what rpm. Simple!

PROTESTORS GATHER AT BEAR BUTTE–STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — American Indians have started gathering at Bear Butte for a summer-long encampment to protest the encroachment of large campgrounds and other venues that cater to bikers at the annual motorcycle rally in nearby Sturgis.

Tribes from across the country have been invited to camp at the butte, which is sacred to Indians.

Protest leaders say the encampment will include a summit meeting for Indian tribes Aug. 1-4, and they also plan to march down Main Street in Sturgis during the motorcycle rally.

Indians are upset that Meade County officials have approved alcohol licenses for large campgrounds that plan to feature concerts during rally week, which begins Aug. 7.

Carter Camp, a member of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, said the protesters are not asking to stop the motorcycle rally — just keep it away from sacred land.

“We know that it’s a driving economic force in this county to have 800,000 bikers come to the state. It doubles the population. That’s why we aren’t trying to stop the rally; we’re not trying to interfere with bikers,” he said.

CANTINA SUNDAY SCHOOL IN SESSION– The teacher was talking to her class about human speech. “Only humans stutter,” she told the class. “No other animal in the world does.”

Johnny raised his hand and said, “You’re wrong, Miss Finch!”

“Really, would you mind telling us why that is, Johnny?” replied the teacher.

“Well, Miss Finch, the other day I was playing with my cat on the porch. The neighbors’ Rottweiler came around the corner, and my cat went ‘fffff! fffff! fffff!’, and before he could say ‘Fuck!’, the dog ate him!”

WomenRidersNow.com Welcomes New Columnist– Star of Discovery Channel’s “Motorcycle Women” adds unique perspective 7/9/2006. Betsy Huelskamp, the star of “Motorcycle Women,” a documentary that aired on the Discovery Channel in 2003, begins writing for WomenRidersNow.com as a columnist and a contributor. “Betsy has a unique perspective on life and riding, truly living life on her own terms,” says Genevieve Schmitt, founder and editor of WomenRidersNow.com. “I know she will inspire lots of riders. She is a welcomed addition to this online magazine.”

Long before she was cast in the Discovery Channel documentary, Betsy was, and still is, a fixture on the Southern California Harley-Davidson motorcycle scene. Plus, those who’ve been attending Sturgis for the last 20 years may recognize Betsy from seeing her ride down Main Street on her rusty chopper wearing fringed leather outfits. Betsy definitely has her own style and point of view and that, perhaps, is the reason, so many riders are interested in what she’s doing and what she has to say.

Betsy will contribute a column as well as feature stories on the page entitled “Backroading W/ Betsy.” The link is found in the “Departments” links on the left side of WomenRidersNow.com.

MARGARITAS FLOWED–The female banter increased with the level of giggles. I dared wander through frey, hoping to score another Margarita. As the night cooled the action heated up and crowds grew. I hid out in the shop, launched the Perewitz Open House Story and prepared for Sunday. Then I got a call. Two girls wanted to escape the noise and wander into the night.

Slinking into the night in Wilmington, the third world country, between Long Beach and San Pedro is a dangerous notion. Think about this. It’s a tiny town blocked from the Pacific Ocean by the notorious Terminal Island, home of shipping cranes and container parking lots. We’re trapped between Los Angeles and the Port of Los Angeles. It’s a dank industrial area. Longshoremen don’t even come here unless in numbers with high noon daylight at their backs. At night junkyard dogs are hesitant to wander the streets and the homeless recently disappeared, leaving piles of refuse and tented shopping carts.

So no, this ain’t no gated community with 24-hour guards and spotless landscaping. This is where I live and the girls wanted to stagger down the street to the Foc’sle Bar. This small pub has been part of the harbor landscape since the ’30s. It contains Hong Kong seaport art I would sell a motorcycle for and nothing else, although the new bartender is a cute, tall Guatemalan girl, who has a bobby-sox look about her that makes me want to dance.

girlie aircleaner

I’m going to jump out of this mess before I paint myself into a corner. I need to get back into the shop and work on the 2004 Sportster. Black Market John recently crashed. Not bad, but another project. We’ll bring you a report next week. I’ll also launch a report on the V-Bike. I received the above air cleaner last week from Two-Bit choppers (twobitchoppers.com). It’s killer. Had to run it again, because of the girl. Rock and Roll.
