FORMER INDIAN MOTORCYCLE CEO ARRESTED–Former Indian Motorcycle CEO Rey Sotelo, who was arrested June 15 by state and federal agents on suspicion of racketeering and conspiracy of trafficking stolen parts, loan-sharking, and doing business with outlaw motorcycle clubs.

Local motorcycle luminary Rey Sotelo retired from the business six years ago, but federal prosecutors accused the Gilroy man last week of helping a central California chop shop send a stolen Harley-Davidson to Sweden – without Uncle Sam’s permission.

The bike in question never made it across the Atlantic Ocean, but Sotelo has been charged with conspiracy after state and federal law officers arrested him July 15 in Gilroy for allegedly helping to counterfeit the bike’s official papers. Eight other men throughout Stanislaus County were also arrested that morning for allegedly associating with the Road Dog Cycle in Denair, southeast of Modesto. Federal prosecutors have used a grand jury’s findings to indict a total of 11 men, including five with law enforcement connections.

Chief among those charged are Robert Holloway, 61, a retired Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy who lives in Turlock; and his son, Brent Holloway, 36, of Modesto. The two men ran Road Dog Cycle and face racketeering and conspiracy charges for trafficking stolen parts, loan-sharking and doing business with outlaw motorcycle clubs such as the Hells Angels, according to the indictment filed by U.S. Attorney Joseph Russionello.

If convicted for his alleged part in the Scandinavian scheme, Sotelo could spend five years in jail and pay about $250,000. But the former face of the Indian Motorcycle Corporation in Gilroy – who posted $100,000 bond Thursday – said he has been pulled in with the wrong crowd.

“I’m not the guy they want. They’re just throwing me in this to sensationalize the case,” Sotelo said as he pulled out of his Day Road driveway Tuesday afternoon.

He described his association with the Holloway men as “minimal” and added that his former business, Indian-CMC, gave Road Dog Cycle a bike on consignment that Sotelo said he thought may have been headed for Sweden. He declined to elaborate, though, until he had a chance to speak with his private criminal defense attorney, Richard Pointer of Hinkle, Jachimowicz, Pointer & Emanuel in San Jose. Sotelo was scheduled to appear in court less than two hours later, but he said he was not going up to San Jose. Pointer did not return messages Tuesday.

Right around the time Sotelo joined the IMC team, authorities allege the Holloways and area biker gangs began illegal activities. Road Dog Cycle became a gathering place and commercial supplier for the Hells Angels, the Jus Brothers, the Alky Haulers, the East Bay Dragons and other outlaw clubs, according to the indictment. The Holloway men and their associates “promoted a climate of fear through violence and threats of violence” and received cover from retired California Highway Patrol officer and former part-time Merced County sheriff’s deputy Joseph Tyler, 65, of Merced, who helped identify and conceal stolen parts for the shop, according to the indictment.

Beginning August 2006, the Holloway men and their associates began obtaining a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was for Fredrick A. Noreberg, 36, of Sweden, the chapter president of the Red Devils outlaw motorcycle club in that country, according to the indictment. This is when prosecutors allege that Sotelo came into the picture: Some time between Sept. 21 and Nov. 2, 2007, Robert Holloway, Sotelo and the Swede linked up and agreed to export the bike illegally.

“Sotelo would assist the defendants in the export of this motorcycle by supplying false (manufacture statements of origin) and a false (vehicle identification number),” reads the indictment. Surveillance captured Sotelo speaking with Robert Holloway and the Swede about the plan on two occasions in October before the 21st, when Noreberg received the tampered bike from Robert Holloway. The bike never made it out of the country, but authorities are still looking for Noreberg, according to Sacramento-based FBI Special Agent Steve Dupre.

The charges were announced Tuesday afternoon at the Modesto Police Department by Drew Parenti, Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent-in-charge, and U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott, both from Sacramento. If convicted, the suspects could face decades in prison and fines of $250,000 to $2.5 million.

What Is Going On In Tallahassee Florida–I am starting to think there must be something in the drinking water or people are smoking things they shouldn?t in Tallahassee Florida. Well not everyone but certainly those involved in running the state.

There was some real strange goings on during the recent legislative session and now the Florida Department of Highway Safety has started a statewide campaign called RIDE PROUD-DRESS LOUD.

In their press release they are suggesting that motorcyclists who make themselves more visible or ?conspicuous? are less likely to have their right-of-way violated by other vehicles on the roadway.

They go on to say; To enhance visibility, motorcyclist are encouraged to wear brightly colored or reflective upper-torso apparel. It is also suggested that reflective strips, high beams and vibrant-colored decals be used on the motorcycle itself.

Motorcyclist are already doing a lot of things to avoid other vehicles from taking their right-of-way like headlights on, loud pipes and yes many do wear bright clothes, but it is not working because motorists are still being allowed to use the lame excuse that they did not see the motorcycle.

Most of it is because they were not paying attention to their driving and in many cases doing other things like talking on cell phones.

My sources tell me this campaign is an attempt to gain support for making a law during the next session of the legislature that all motorcycle riders be required to wear one of the vests or jackets that have reflective material on it. I suspect that those behind this will not admit it and at some later date they will come up with data to warrant them doing so.

This is not going to go well with most riders I know and especially those who belong to any organization that wear back patches which includes Motorcycle Rights Organizations, HOG and many others.

I believe the amount of money that is being used on this campaign can be better used elsewhere like offering state run motorcycle schools at a reasonable price.

And putting reflective strips on motorcycles is a definite No-No!

If you feel as I do about this I suggest you help stop this before it goes any further by contacting the Florida Department of Highway Safety by e-mail at HSMV-Info@flhsmv.gov or contacting Kelly Robertson the person who sent out the notice at 850-339-1336 and stated she was available to answer questions.

WHITE SANDS FLORIDA ABATE CHAPTER SHUTS DOWN–On July 13, 2008 the last formal meeting for the White Sands Chapter of ABATE of Florida, Inc. was held. For the past 2 months there have been no officers in place and after contact with many of the members it was found that there are no interested parties to accept the responsibilities of the available offices. With 38 members in attendance it was voted unanimously that the chapter would disband.

Many of the reasons for disbandment are the same reasons that have been reoccurring over the years, ABATE of Florida, Inc. has changed the true intent of the meaning of “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactment”.

We have become what we vowed to fight against. We now make laws, negotiate with the safetycrats and sell the souls of the motorcyclists for the sake of notoriety. This year is a fine example of soul selling!ABATE of Florida, Inc. no longer cares what the members of the organization think and does not allow them to voice their concerns at state meetings upon request.

The organization has become discriminatory in it’s selection of who is heard and what is said at meetings.White Sands members made the request to be placed on the April state meeting agenda to ask about the lobbyist contract and performance agreement.

Hopefully the membership of ABATE of Florida, Inc. will wake up to the fact that the membership has hovered in the same numbers too long. There is a problem within its ranks. Until that is resolved I will not support ABATE of Florida, Inc.

I wish you all well in your endeavors. I will continue to fight for my rights as a motorcyclists. I will not let someone go to the capital and pretend to represent the motorcyclists of this state and sell us short. If you care to join me….keep in touch.

BUELLS ENDURE AT MOTO-ST BARBER 500K–Buell Teams Score Pair of Podium Finishes in SST and GST classes

Leeds, Ala. (July 21, 2008) ? The No. 8 Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing Buell 1125R earned the pole position and finished on the SuperSport Twins podium at the Suntrust MOTO-ST Barber 500K at Barber Motorsports Park July 19-20 after a late-race pit stop problem cost the team the race lead and a shot at a second-straight overall win.

After starting on pole and leading the first five of the race?s 93-laps, the No. 8 Buell 1125R ridden by Shawn Higbee and Mike Smith regained the overall lead late in the going but lost the position during its final pit stop when the team had trouble with the rear brake caliper during a rear tire change. The No. 75 Touring Sport Ducati 848 won the race.

?There was something unusual with the rear brake caliper; I think the brake pad popped out of the carrier,? Higbee said after the race. ?It [the brake pad] was really hot and they had a hard time getting it back in. It cost us a little bit. It seemed like eternity when you’re sitting there.

?Otherwise, the Buell 1125R was running strong. Fuel strategy really played into this race. We were really close to a two-stop strategy. We ended up pitting early to take advantage of the yellow but it may have cost us our two-stopper because at the end we had to come in and that wasn’t planned. But that’s the fun and challenge of endurance racing.?

In the BMW Motorcycles GrandSport Twins class, the No. 70 Buell Firebolt XB12R of James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing sponsored by H-D/Buell of Appleton finished third. Riders Jeff Johnson and Paul James steadily worked their way up the order to finish on the final step of the podium and earned the PIAA Lights Award for biggest improvement in class, having started the race in seventh position.

The No. 7 Richie Morris Racing/Hal?s Harley-Davidson Buell XB12R piloted by Clint Brotz and Bryan Bemisderfer finished fifth. The No. 77 Touring Sport Ducati PS1000LE took the class win. James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing retained its points lead in the GST class, now leading by a one-point margin over the No. 77 Touring Sport Ducati Team.

?This is our seventh consecutive GST class podium, a streak that dates back to last year at Road America,? said James. ?That?s a statement about the durability and reliability of our Buell Firebolt XB12R as well as the dedication and determination of our entire team. We want this championship.?

BIKERNET AMSIOL FUEL ADDITIVE STUDY–While at Amsoil University this week I asked Don Zupec, Amsoil Technical Services Manager, about using P.I. Gas Additive in motorcycles and particularly the Fuel Injected Harley Davidson. I wanted to be sure that I could tell all my dealers and customers the proper amount to use to be certain that there was no adverse effect from using it to clean up the fuel injectors, valves and combustion chambers.

Today I received this response and table, from Don, showing the proper treat rates. The table shows that P.I. is safe for small engines and motorcycles as long as the Amsoil recommended treat rates are followed.

–Nick

Though the new AMSOIL P.I. was originally developed to address the specific needs of automotive applications, it is also suited for use in all types of 4-stroke, gasoline fueled engine. As operational and equipment differences can exist between various applications, how the additive is used in each application may also differ.

Comparing automotive with Power Sports for example we find major differences in such areas as fuel tank capacities, fuel consumption rates, and frequency of use to mention just a few. All these must be considered in order to provide maximum benefits.

It should be noted that regardless of the application, the product is designed to be used for periodic clean-up and not continual use.

Also, under no circumstances should it be used in a two-cycle application. Finally, in all cases the product should be used at a treat rate of .6 ounces of additive to one gallon of fuel. General guidelines regarding the use of the new AMSOIL P.I. in various applications are as follows:

For automotive applications it is recommended that 20 gallons of treated fuel (one bottle of PI) be run through the vehicle with the maximum amount of treated fuel never exceeding 40 gallons (two bottles of PI). It is recommended in an automobile application that the fuel be treated as such every 4,000 miles or 100 hours of operation.

For Power Sports equipment such as motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, PWC and outboards it is recommended that 5 gallons of treated fuel be run through the equipment with the maximum amount of treated fuel not to exceed 10 gallons. It is recommended in Power Sports applications the fuel be treated as such every 2,000 miles, 100 hours of operation or once per year/season whichever occurs first.

For small displacement utility engines such as lawn care equipment, snow blowers, cement mixers, portable pumps, portable generators and the like it is recommended that 1 gallon of treated fuel be run through the engine with the maximum amount of treated fuel never exceeding 2 gallons. It is recommended in utility applications the fuel be treated as such every 100 hours of operation or once per year/season whichever occurs first.
