Hey,

I’m still coming down from the last couple of days as the co-producer of the next segment of Sturgis Rider Live and damnit I was chosen to be the host. With Bill Hayes and his lovely girlfriend Jennifer Thomas, a Columbia grad, we spent all week long writing segments and designing the show, finding guests, lining up props and preparing for the onslaught of the Charlie Brechtel band, production crew, camera folks and our special Blues Guest Deacon Jones.

Thursday night Ray Wheeler rolled into town, I kidnapped him and we made a 75 mile dash south to pick up Assalt Weapan sheet metal from Air Stream Studios. The next morning the Assalt Weapan started flying back together and we shot stills of the Assalt Weapan with Miss December and January for Charlie’s calendar to culminate in Sturgis at the Buffalo chip where one of the girls wins a flurry of prizes. Wait till you see these shot. Jeremiah and I had to manufacture a tripod for a massive 50-caliber machine gun that matches the gun on our nose art.

Karley and Felicia.

So Jerry shot until after Midnight and we climbed out of the sack at 6:30 the next morning, tore down the still studio and prepared for a day of shooting show segments. Other than late models with horrible hair experiences, it rolled like clockwork until the sun set over the harbor. Let’s hit the news.

Adapter

CUSTOM DESIGN STUDIO OIL FILTER ADAPTER– This adapter allows you to install an oil filter in place of the generator on models that have an alternator left case (knuckle, pan or shovel). This one is superior to others on the market with 360 degree indexing designed by Kirk Taylor for easy oil line routing, only 5/8″ thickness so installing a long oil filter without starter plug interference is no problem.

It increases oil capacity and is 1.5 pounds lighter – all these benefits for $75. To order call 415-382-6662 or email customdesignstudio@sbcglobal.com.

360 BrakeFRT

360 BRAKE INTRODUCES NEW BEGINNINGS FOR THEIR BRAKE SYSTEMS– Indianapolis, IN (January 8, 2008) – 360 Brake is extremely excited to announce the release of the newly redesigned 360 Brake. This unique braking system is completely contained in a five-inch hub mounted around the axle; it looks like there’s no brake at all! The circular piston and pads are activated by hydraulic pressure delivering 360? of braking pressure to the rotor in a compact hub. “We’ve completely redesigned the inner workings of the brake”, states Dale Needleman, 360 Brake President. The new rotor, which is grooved and vented, together with the brake hat’s newly designed venting system, effectively eliminates dust build up providing superior airflow to the brake.

The 360 Brake engineering team developed a testing protocol based on the FM VSS 122 DOT test. They tested the new brake for four days on a closed course in controlled conditions. Readings and tolerances were documented and repeated to validate the data. After completing these tests, Needleman expressed their utmost confidence in the product. “We really wanted to get quantified data on the stopping power and the heat dissipation of the brake,” Needleman said, “After employing our new designs and completing the rigorous testing protocol, the 360 Brake performed extremely well, surpassing the testing protocol in some instances by well over 100%!”

360 BrakeREAR

The 360 Brake will fit most custom and V-Twin configurations and is now offered in a polished finish with chrome and color anodized as upgrades. Currently 360 Brake can be adapted to most of the billet wheels, with a limited offering for a spoked wheel configuration. For more information check it out at www.360brake.com or give them a call at 317.875.0360.

360 Brake, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, was formed in October of 2007 after purchasing the assets and intellectual property from Baldwin Wilson Development Corporation. 360 Brake immediately began an engineering and R&D campaign, to create a more functional, better performing brake. 360 Brake specially selected the engineering team, with specific braking skills, forming a cohesive team with one goal – to redesign the original 360 Brake to be a competitive product for the custom motorcycle market.

WOMAN’S SEXUAL BEHAVIORS MAY BE CLOSER TO MEN’S THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT– ScienceDaily (Jul. 2, 2003) – COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new study suggests that men and women might not be as far apart in sexual behaviors as previous research has shown.

In many surveys, men typically report engaging in sex at earlier age, more often, and with more sexual partners than do women. However, a new study shows that some reported gender differences might show up because women don’t always answer surveys honestly, but give answers they believe are expected of them.

“Women are sensitive to social expectations for their sexual behavior and may be less than totally honest when asked about their behavior in some survey conditions,” said Terri Fisher, co-author of the study and associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University’s Mansfield campus.

In this study, the researchers asked men and women about their sexual attitudes and behaviors under several different testing conditions – including one in which the participants believed they were connected to a lie detector machine. Women’s answers were closer to men’s in some areas of sexual behavior when they thought lies could be detected. Men’s answers didn’t change as much as did women’s under different testing conditions.

“Before the study, we thought men would generally over report their sexual behavior and women would underreport it under certain testing conditions,” Fisher said. “However, we found that women were more likely than men to have different answers depending on conditions when they were surveyed.”

“Our results may reflect currently shifting gender roles in which women don’t feel as strong a need to meet certain expectations about their sexual behavior.” Fisher conducted the study with Michele Alexander, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Maine. Their results appear in a recent issue of The Journal of Sex Research.

The study involved 201 unmarried, heterosexual college students (96 men and 105 women) between the ages of 18 and 25. All the participants completed questionnaires that asked about their sexual attitudes, sexual experience and behavior, and the age at which they first had sexual intercourse. The participants were split into three groups, based on the different conditions under which they completed the questionnaires.

In one group, the researchers placed electrodes on the participants’ hand, forearms and neck and the participants were told they were being attached to a polygraph (lie detector) machine. However, the polygraph was an old model that didn’t actually work. Although the participants filled out written questionnaires, they were told the polygraph was sensitive enough to detect dishonesty even in written responses. The participants were left alone in a room to answer their questionnaires.

A second group filled out the sex surveys alone in a room and were told their answers would be completely anonymous. In the third group, participants were led to believe that the researcher might view their responses and the researcher sat right outside the testing room with the door open.

In general, the researchers found that women who thought their answers might be seen by others tended to give answers that were more socially acceptable than did women who thought they were connected to a lie detector. For example, women who thought their answers might be read reported an average of 2.6 sexual partners. But those who thought they were monitored by a lie detector reported an average of 4.4 sexual partners. Women who were not attached to the lie detector, but who had privacy during testing, gave answers in the middle – an average of 3.4 sexual partners. Men’s answers didn’t vary as widely. Men who thought they were attached to a polygraph reported an average of 4.0 sexual partners, compared to 3.7 partners for those who thought their answers might be seen.

“Women appear to feel pressure to adhere to sex role expectations that indicate women should be more relationship-oriented and should avoid being seen as promiscuous,” Fisher said. Fisher said it is not entirely surprising that women changed their answers more than men.

“We live in a culture that really does expect a different pattern of sexual behavior from women than it does from men,” she said. The study showed more differences between men and women in sexual attitudes than in sexual behavior. One reason that the study didn’t show more differences in behavior seems to be because the sex differences the researchers sought to explain aren’t particularly strong anymore.

“Our results may reflect currently shifting gender roles in which women don’t feel as strong a need to meet certain expectations about their sexual behavior,” Fisher said.

However, the results show there are still gender differences and these differences need to be taken into account in a variety of ways, she said. For example, many of the most widely respected sex surveys are based on face-to-face interviews with participants. But these types of interviews may lead women to give answers that they feel are more socially desirable, even if they are not completely honest. Having participants complete written questionnaires anonymously may yield more honest results, Fisher said. Also, medical professionals need to be aware of how women respond to questions about their sexuality.

“Based on these findings, a doctor may need to ask female patients about their sexual behavior in different ways than they would for male patients,” she said. Adapted from materials provided by Ohio State University.

PROPOSED BILL TARGETS SPEEDING, RECKLESS MOTORCYCLISTS FROM THE JACKSONVILLE JOURNAL– By JIM SAUNDERS Tallahassee Bureau Chief.

TALLAHASSEE — A proposal to stiffen penalties for motorcyclists who ride recklessly or at high speeds touched off a debate in a state House committee.

Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, has proposed a measure that could lead to the forfeiture of violators’ motorcycles if they exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more or are charged with reckless driving. The measure also could lead to their losing their licenses to ride motorcycles for 10 years, if convicted.

Lopez-Cantera told the House Infrastructure Committee on Thursday that the proposal is designed to address high-speed stunt riding. He played a video from South Florida that showed motorcyclists buzzing in and out of traffic at high speeds and doing tricks such as popping wheelies.

“This has become a plague in our state,” Lopez-Cantera said.

But the measure drew opposition from motorcycle advocates, such as James “Doc” Reichenbach, president of ABATE of Florida Inc., a group that has long lobbied on motorcycle issues.

Reichenbach said the state shouldn’t single out motorcycle riders for increased penalties, as it also has problems with people in cars driving recklessly.

“This is a discriminatory bill,” Reichenbach said.

The committee did not vote on the bill Thursday, and Chairman Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, said he expects Lopez-Cantera to make changes.

Lopez-Cantera has already scaled back the bill from an initial proposal that would have increased penalties for motorcyclists riding 30 mph or more over the speed limit.

THIS IS WHAT LOVE IS ALL ABOUT!– It was a busy morning, about 8:00 when an elderly gentleman in his 80’s, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.

On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, “And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”

He smiled as he patted my hand and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.”

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, “That is the kind of love I want in my life.”

True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

DENVER CONTINUES TO ATTACK MOTORCYCLES– A mutual friend of ours (Curt Lout) said you wanted the skinny on the Denver Pipe / Noise Law. Well, it flat out sucks and effectively either bans motorcycles from downtown Denver or gives the cops a reason to pull you over for nothing – depending upon how you look at it. The interesting part is that for many of us there is no way to comply. Here’s a link to the official stuff:

IT’S BLOODY MARY TIME HERE AT THE CANTINA–All weekend long I told these guys about the killer Salmon tacos at Shamrock’s Fish Market in Wilmington, and Charlie showed up with Der Weirnersnitzel chili dogs and Taco Bell garbage. What the fuck?

We produced one helluva show, though, and I hope it flies. Charlie’s band was killer, Deacon Jones rocked the Bikernet Headquarters and the girls? You’ll have to keep an eye on the Bikernet studio for all the action.

Finally we grabbed a good night’s rest and rolled out this morning to a local Mexican joint for breakfast, then Ray installed one of his W8Less Rotors on the Assalt Weapan before he rode to San Diego to visit a sick friend then headed north toward San Jose and the West Coast offices of W8Less Rotors. We cut some fun commercials for W8Less Rotors, LA ChopRods and Charlie Brechtel Music. Watch for these commercials, not so much for the products, but for the fun of it.

So what’s next? I need to ship the Assalt Weapan to Berry Wardlaw in Alabama for final tuning before we hit it to the Maxton Mile. I also need to ship the Bonne Belle Rolling Chassis to Departure Bike Works in Richmond, Virginia for engine and trans installation. Next on Bikernet is a complete report on the Denver attack on Motorcyclists, I have a review of the recent Roland Sands DVD on one of his bike builds. Another Knockout Bike Build feature is in the hopper, also two features are coming from The Shop in Minneapolis, Dan Bergman’s Road Glide feature, Dissel’s chopper and another wild custom from the KISS bike crew. We are scheduled to deliver a Twin Cam Gear Drive install tech next week from S&S and Gene’s Speed Shop. And hang on for the Bikernet Metric Launch. Incredible, the week is already packed.
