Hey,
It’s a wet Sunday in Los Angeles and the rest of the country is blanketed in snow. We had a power outage on our block and it fried the Television and various appliances, but the computer is still alive. Let’s rock with the news and I’ll see if I can make the refrigerator buzz again.

ORGANIZERS CANCEL 2008 DAKAR RALLY DUE TO TERRORIST FEARS– THE 2008 Dakar Rally has been canceled because of concerns over terrorism in Mauritania, through which eight of the rally’s 15 stages were due to pass. The annual car and motorcycle marathon had been due to start in Lisbon on 5 January, with the finish scheduled in Dakar for 20 January.
Four French tourists were murdered in the North-Western African country on 24 December, which led to the French government advising against any travel there. The murders have been linked to the Islamic Maghreb branch of Al-Qaeda.
The event’s French organizers, the Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), said there had been “direct threats against the race issued by terrorist groups”.
“Following several consultations with the French government, and taking into account its firm recommendations, the organizers of the Dakar Rally have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally,” said an ASO statement.
It continued: “ASO’s first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators.”
The Dakar Rally has been held uninterrupted since 1979, although in the past, stages have been cancelled.

ASO insisted that this decision to cancel the 2008 race would not affect the event in future, but some commentators dispute this.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM & HALL OF FAME TO RAFFLE 1982 HARLEY DAVIDSON “STURGIS”– JANUARY, 2008 – – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is now selling tickets for its 2008 raffle of a hard-to-find 1982 Harley Davidson “Sturgis” motorcycle. This motorcycle is unusual for a number of reasons, including the fact that the “Sturgis” was designed by Willie G. Davidson. Although considered a “custom,” these motorcycles were actually built as a production bike by Harley Davidson, rather than being customized by someone else after production.
Sturgis Motorcycle Museum board member Dave Davis says the winner of this raffle will certainly own a piece of Harley history. Davis said, “The Harley Davidson “Sturgis” motorcycles built in 1980 through 1982 were the first from the company to utilize a twin belt drive. These bikes also became the production test model for what would become the FXR from Harley Davidson, and the company used unique color combinations on the “Sturgis” bikes that were never used again. ” Davis also pointed out that the motorcycle that’s up for raffle has very low miles and original paint.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, holds an annual raffle to support the museum. Tickets for the raffle are being offered at $10 each or $25 for three tickets. Tickets are available for purchase at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame at 999 Main Street in Sturgis, SD or online at the museum’s website at www.sturgismuseum.com. The winner of this year’s raffle will be drawn during the annual Sturgis Rally on Saturday, August 9th.

BIKERNET SEARCHES FOR NEW HOG LOGO– Hey Bandit. I Know you’re busy Just want to say great site. I log on every day. Also On Bikernet news I could not help but notice a HOG banner with an eagle holding a pair of Samuri swords. What’s up with that? I’ve got nothing against the swords, Japan or even the bikes from there, but hey man represent responsibly will ya? Will ya tell those guys to put a pair of American revolutionary rifles there or something like that? Looks weird….

Yes sir, I contacted the factory today about a new updated logo. I don’t know where that one came from. I’m innocent, I swear–Bandit

EASY-PULL CLUTCHES– Top of the morning to you sir!! Once in a while I see postings about how to change the energy needed to operate the clutch on HD’s.
A search didn’t turn the following up on Bikernet, but I’m sure you’ve heard of the infamous MAGURA hydraulic clutch systems used on many off road competition bikes. (German mfg?)
They now make a kit for Sportsters and the big Harley bikes, and I seen one on a Sportster yesterday. Very clean installation, no glunky parts hang’n around, and my old knarley hands and fingers operated it with ease. Hell, I’d say it was a good 25% or so easier than my stock setup.
Dude said he converted over within an hour, rode off, and hasn’t had to mess with it once in over a year so far. Now that’s something frigg’n new!!!
Just google “magura harley”, and you’ll find some jobbers, pics etc.
Later!! It’s only 42 degrees, but I’ve got a date with a throttle.

I’m also interviewing and taking pictures of Kiwi Mike, who is fabricating Indian Motorcycles. Would you be interested in his story?
Happy New Year, and to your pretty girlfriend too!
