HUMBUG HOLIDAY Thursday News

Hey,

This is a strange day. It’s close to Christmas, but there seems to be a great deal of struggling going on in the country. Yet, on the other hand, aftermarket shops and some dealerships are doing well.

One day Bikernet seems to be doing gangbusters and the next we stumble. As we close in on the end of the year, I’m going to spill our guts about 2012. We are making serious progress with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Industry Council to support motorcycling. Here is a concept logo. We will see what the board has to say.

We are about to expand Bikernet with two more sites, BikernetBagger and BikernetTrikes, then we will build a portal to house four motorcycle sites, with these, Bikernet, and WomenRidersNow, by Genieve Schmitt. That should rock the world some and bring you more information. Our soon to be announced editor, will be building a Victory Bagger, and we have a surprise 5-Ball Racing Trike planned for Bonneville of 2013. This trike gives me goose bumps, just thinking about it. I spoke to Dennis Manning last year about the concept and he initiated a trike class. We will soon announce a team of freelance masterminds who will be working on the Trike and Bagger sites. Hang on. Let’s hit the news:

BIKERNET BAD-JOKE LIBRARY, NOW OPEN–I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice! At least I presume she was poor – she only had $1.20 in her purse.

My girlfriend thinks that I’m a stalker. Well, she’s not exactly my girlfriend yet.

AMERICAN CHOPPER REVIEW–Senior’s entry wasn’t a bike and wasn’t even worth considering.

Junior’s bike, while interesting, ain’t a rider. From a style/show bike perspective, I agree with you that he knocked it out of the park. I was disappointed that it didn’t look more like a P-51, which is my favorite airplane of all time, but it looks like it would be more at home as part of the marquee for a Vegas strip club. Jus one more piece of PJD butt jewelry.

Jesse’s bike? Kinda ho-hum, but it is a rider and it is pure motorcycle/chopper at its core. So if I’ve gotta choose, I choose his sled.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ARCHEOLOGICAL TEAM FINDINGS–After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story in the LA Times read: “California archaeologists, report finding of 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers.”

One week later. A local newspaper in Minnesota reported the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Askov , Minnesota , Ole Swenson, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Ole has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Minnesota had already gone wireless.”

Just makes a person proud to be from Minnesota.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS–I became confused when I heard the word “Service” used with these agencies:
Internal Revenue ‘Service’
U.S. Postal ‘Service’
Telephone ‘Service’
Cable TV ‘Service’
Civil ‘Service’
State, City, County & Public ‘Service’
Automobile ‘Service’

This is not what I thought ‘Service’ meant.

But today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to ‘Service’ a few cows. BAM!!! It all came into focus. Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us.

You are now as enlightened as I am!

MEXICAN COP EXTORTION STORY–The local riders hanging out at the “Biker Bar” at the Harley dealership (in the marina) later advised me just don’t stop for those Mexican cops on foot…but knowing I was about to turn in and there is only one rental place I calculated the risk/reward and decided to be safe. Watched at least one high speed mc chase each night there (there are two mc cops in cabo san lucas and yes they can ride). The locals apparently have enough money they don’t care or else actually do get away??

Having said that, those locals cagers are crazy drivers, stop signs and speed limits are only suggestions to them…I expect the accident statistics look pretty bad there.

The funniest (to me) part of the whole story…we had been advised to carry cash for such a shake down… but we never broke more than a $100 at a time so were running low…after he had given me his safety speech about helmet use he wanted me to ride the bike to some headquarters place a couple blocks into the middle of town where I could then get my license back, which I was not about to do…so I started asking how much it would take to make this go away. He named his price but we only had 150p on us…Jen went into HardRock Café but they would not change a 500p…then we started turning our pockets inside out very publicly… found the remaining 50p in small bills…all the while making a little scene…the cop was starting to get embarrassed…

I very obviously flourished the money like a poker hand as I presented it to him , causing him to started looking around for where the cameras were and who was looking…. Quickly then got my license back and very legally left the scene the remaining 200 feet to the rental return.

A WARM CHRISTMAS STORY FOR THE SEASON–Three Bikers died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.

‘In honor of this holy season’ Saint Peter said, ‘You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.’

The first fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. ‘It represents a candle’, he said.

‘You may pass through the pearly gates’ Saint Peter said.

The second reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, ‘They’re bells.’

Saint Peter said ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’.

The old Grey Beard one started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s panties.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, ‘And just what do those symbolize?’

The Grey Beard replied, ‘These are Carol’s.–from Rogue

BIKERNET CHRISTMAS PARTY WARNING–
Just a reminder to all:

Please take care of yourself. A recent joint study conducted by the Department of Health and the Department of Motor Vehicles indicates that 13% of traffic accidents are alcohol related.

This means that the remaining 87% are caused by assholes who drink water, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, juices, and eat yogurt and shit like that. Therefore, beware of those who do not drink alcohol. They cause more than six times as many accidents.

DENVER MULLINS TO BE REPRESENTED AT THE GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW–  In honor of motorcycle legend Denver Mullins, members of his original crew and Kayelynn Johnson, a preserver of Mullins’ history, are bringing the largest collection of original Denver choppers to the 2012 Grand National Roadster Show.

Original Denver painters Fred Hernandez, Mike Craig, and Don Walker with the “Rainbow Bike.”
In 1967, a young Denver Mullins opened his first shop with $120 in San Bernardino, CA. It was the smallest, yet greatest investment he ever made. Sought after for their original custom frames, long front ends, and killer multi-color paint jobs, Denver’s Choppers revolutionized motorcycle building in Southern California. Mullins’ trademark long fork frontend, is just one of the things that makes his choppers so aesthetically pleasing. Mullins was also famous for being one of the best custom painters of his time.

A huge fan of drag boat racing, Mullins often was a frequent participant in hydro racings. On October 4, 1992 while doing a test run on Puddingstone Lake in San Dimas California, Mullins’ Top Fuel Hydro “Public Enemy” nose dived out of the starting gate and capsized. Unfortunately, his safety capsule failed to break away from the hull and he drowned before rescues crews reached him. Mullins is survived by his wife, Lynda, step-daughter, Lisa, and his legendary bikes.

VAGOS MOTORCYCLE CLUB targeted in Calif. Raids–SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of law enforcement officers swept across seven Southern California counties on Thursday targeting members and leaders of the Vagos motorcycle club, some of whom are accused of crimes including rape and solicitation of murder.

The early morning raids netted at least 12 arrests, drugs and more than 300 weapons, authorities said. Twenty-five others were already arrested, and more than 40 pounds of cocaine and eight pounds of methamphetamine were seized along with a rocket launcher.

Authorities said some members of the gang, which was founded in the 1960s and has about 500 members worldwide, were involved in a large-scale drug distribution ring. Members would threaten, intimidate or use violence to protect their interests, they said.

“Often times, Vagos members were armed and they don’t hesitate to use their weapons,” said David King, a senior special agent in charge with the California Department of Justice, the agency that led the 18-month investigation.

Most recently, a Vagos member from Northern California was arrested in connection with the Sept. 23 slaying of Jeffrey “Jethro” Pettigrew, president of the San Jose chapter of the rival Hells Angels, during a shootout at a Nevada casino. Two Vagos members also were wounded in the melee, and a third was shot in the stomach the next morning by a gunman in a passing car.

Forty to 50 state indictments were expected as a result of the investigation dubbed “Operation Simple Green.” Among the crimes authorities uncovered are a solicitation for murder they said they couldn’t disclose details about, as well as the rape of a woman by four Vagos members at a Los Alamitos bar in March.

No arrests have been made in either case, but authorities were asking for the public’s help in identifying the rape victim.

“We feel like she’s been threatened, and that’s the reason why she hasn’t come forward,” King said.

The raids were the latest effort to dismantle what officials have labeled an outlaw gang, whose patch includes the Norse god of mischief Loki. Vagos is a Spanish name that means “traveling gypsy” or “a street-wise person that’s always up to something.” It also has chapters in Australia, Canada and Nicaragua.

Vagos leaders in the past have said their group is a social club, not a criminal enterprise, and have complained of being repeatedly targeted by law enforcement.

SCOOTER’S BONNEVILLE BOOK NOW AVAILABLE– THE 2011 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials yearbook is finished, all 140 pages and 336 images from the event. I have already made many of the personalized covers that I remember from last year but if you haven’t picked your image go to my website www.scootershoots.com and pick out your image, then drop me a note with the image number and I will get you fixed up. You can still get them in time for the holidays but time is running out.

I have committed the entire series of BUB books to the new Bonneville Salt Flats Museum when it is finished. As the book is the only record of it’s kind in land speed racing I hope it represents us well in the new museum.

It is my intention to bring a book to the 2012 event and get as many people as I can to sign it for donation to the museum.

I love putting this book together and as always I apologize in advance to those riders I missed. Shooting two tracks that run simultaneously makes it difficult and I always miss a few.
If you have any questions please drop me a note and I will see that you get what you need. Here is you link: http://www.blurb.com/my/store

See you all in about nine months ON THE SALT !!!

UNCLE MONKEY REVIEW OF AMERICAN CHOPPER BUILD OFF–
Now that the smoke has cleared and the votes have been tallied Paul Jr. seems to get the nod as the top TV builder. It seems a hollow victory but a victory non-the less. Fans of TV builders typically fall into two categories, those that like OCC and those that don’t. Most of the OCC fans I run into have never straddled a motorcycle and never plan too. While the vast majority of the Teutul’s work has been basically cake decorating compared to the West Coast Choppers there is still basic design ideas in the frosting. As for Jesse he never really broke any new ground with West Coast Choppers. The long, drawn out chopper had been and continues to be a staple of choppers. Yes, there were some nice touches but they were in the details and not in your face like OCC.

The showdown has been coming for a long time and like most bikers I was anxious to see the result. Paul Senior continued to contribute nothing as his employees designed and built the entire … well it’s not a bike by any stretch of the imagination. For us in cold climates we’ll call it a ski-doo. Jesse built a chopper. Built as a rider Jesse created a beautiful bike with a few nods to the past but nothing really jumped out as being new in design. Personally riding with my head cocked to one side to see around the risers and bars would get real old, real fast. It is the same bike hundreds of people are building in their garages right now. As for Paul Jr. he continued with his theme bikes that I’ve seen him do week in – week out. What sets Juniors P-51 Mustang apart is design. The single arm front fork is different and the design geometry behind the rear suspension is impressive as is the novel exhaust through the gas tank. I do question the one-gallon fuel tank with a whole 40 mile operating distance, so the bike definitely won’t be making any highway trips or even many trips to the bar across town. It is a show bike/museum piece and honestly I wouldn’t be offended to see it in the Harley Museum.

Should Jesse James win because he is a “real” biker? No. If you cannot appreciate the difference between Jesse’s bike and Junior’s I’m afraid you really don’t know as much about motorcycles as you think. Yes he hand built a stainless steel frame and springer front end but, so has my friends and many other shops. BikerNet.com’s “Bandit” Keith Ball has been building, riding, and writing about motorcycles since before Jesse was born so when he says it was a poor bike, when he says most of the bikes at the recent Long Beach Show were built better and nicer then Jesse’s I tend to believe him. This doesn’t mean that I am jumping on the OCC/PJD bandwagon. Their fan base is more non-riders than bikers and those are the people who came out in droves to vote. I still find their bikes impractical and better-suited sitting in a display case. Thinking back to some of the multi-engine and radical machines Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz, Donnie Smith and other built as show bikes in the seventies they weren’t all that practical either.

What does it all mean? Not a lot really. TV voting rarely has anything to do with talent or skill. Year after year, we watch as the winners of American Idol drop off the face of the earth while the runners up have successful careers. Looking at the pictures Junior’s bike is the nicer bike and my good friend Bandit, who went over the bikes with a fine toothcomb, assures me it is even nicer in person. In the end Paul Jr. will continue to build impractical bikes for display, Senior will continue to take credit for the work of others, and Jesse will ride into the sunset until his next money making scheme. So who gets my vote? No one. Build your own damn bike.

SENATE COMMITTEE PASSES HIGHWAY BILL–  Yesterday, the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed a sweeping safety bill known as the Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act (S. 1449). The bill passed by voice vote.

Earlier this week, Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) filed an amendment that would have gutted the popular federal motorcycle education and awareness grants, known as the 2010 funds. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is pleased to report that Lautenberg did not call that amendment for a vote. Due to an overwhelming response from the motorcycle community, the 2010 grants are safe for now.

Also under attack was the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lobby ban. This law prohibits NHTSA from using federal money to lobby State legislatures, uninvited. The way S. 1449 was drafted, it removed this lobby ban. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) introduced a number of amendments to maintain the ban and the necessary amendments were agreed to, by unanimous consent of the full committee.

The one sticking point that remains is at least, the least troublesome. That being said, it is still something that will keep the attention of the MRF lobby efforts. The trouble lies in a provision in S. 1449 that calls out motorcycle helmets in the list of definitions as “motor vehicle equipment”. Previously, the list simply stated: “any device or an article or apparel… that is not a system, part, or component of a motor vehicle”.

The MRF would like to thank all the State motorcycle rights organizations and everyone else who helped with this legislation.

The bill passed today will likely move on to be a part of the larger Highway Bill which could happen in early 2012. The MRF will keep you informed on this issue.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER STUDIES THE BLUES--Feeling Blue? Try St. John’s Wort. St. John’s wort is available in tablets, capsules, tinctures, fluid extract, powdered extract and infused in oil. I recommend products standardized for hyperforin and hypericin. Take 300 milligrams three times a day. To support optimal mood, it may take six to eight weeks to work. If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), you may want to try St. John’s wort in conjunction with a light box or other type of bright-light therapy commonly used for SAD.

MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS GROUPS SAVE US ONCE AGAIN–
Due to the actions of Motorcycle Rights Organizations notifying their members and other motorcyclist a very bad piece of legislation in the form of a amendment filed by Senator Frank Lautenberg (NJ) to the Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act (S. 1449) was removed before the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed the bill on Wednesday 12/14/2011.

Word spread quickly through e-mails and the internet and motorcyclist e-mailed and called their elected officials and let them know they were against the amendments.

The sad part of all this is that ever since 1975 when the Blackmail Threat from the NHTSA who Threatened to Withhold Highway Funds from states Not Passing Specific Laws was defeated at a hearing in Washington DC Senator Lautenberg has continued to try and bring it back every year. How long must we deal with this person and his attempts to sneak this type of legislation into law?

The WIN SHOWS THAT MOTORCYCLISTS CAN STOP BAD LEGISLATION!

There are many other issues that affect us and hopefully everyone one will take this as a sign that we can Win Those Issues As Well.
Thank All of YOU Who Were Involved In This

PICKERINGTON, Ohio –– A U.S. Senate committee has approved two amendments to a traffic safety bill that would continue a ban on a U.S. traffic safety agency lobbying state and local officials, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On Dec. 14, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved S. 1449 — the Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011 — including two amendments offered by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). The DeMint amendments deleted language in the bill that would have allowed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to lobby state and local officials.

The committee didn’t take up a proposed amendment that was to be offered by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) that would have drastically altered the existing motorcyclist safety grant program by indirectly pressuring states to pass mandatory helmet laws.

The measure now goes to the Senate floor for a vote. It’s unknown when that may take place.

“This is good news for motorcyclists nationwide because it means that federal officials won’t be trying to influence local decisions when it comes to motorcycle safety and motorcycle safety-related programs,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STRANGE VOCABULARY LESSON–
veriest VER-ee-ist, adjective:

1. Utmost; most complete.
2. Superlative of very.

Abagail had held her tongue when Molly said that—Molly and Jim and the others were young and didn’t understand anything but the veriest good and the veriest bad.
— Stephen King, The Stand

Though in the course of his continual voyagings Ahab must often before have noticed a similar sight, yet, to any monomaniac man, the veriest trifles capriciously carry meanings.
— Herman Melville, Moby-Dick: Or the Whale

Veriest is obviously related to the word very, which derives from the Old French word verai meaning “true, real or genuine.” The suffix -est makes a word a superlative, like fastest.

BIKERNET TEXAS CORRESPONDENT XMAS PROJECT–Thought you’d get a kick out of this mini-bike I bought in pieces for 200 bucks. My son and I have put it back together, but he doesn’t know it’s for his Christmas present. He thought we were doing it for one of the guys I work.

I told him we had to help him get it together for his son and my boy replied,” Well let’s build it for him!”, and started grabbing parts. Check it out. It’s a 1970 RUPP minibike Enduro…kinda crude but its been a cool project.

Merry Christmas to all of Bikerdom, and I’m enjoying the hell outta the 2012 Ultra Limited. ALready have over 3100 miles on it and have driven in 31 degree weather. Merry Christmas!

PORT OF LOS ANGELES RECEIVES THREE DESIGN, ENGINEERING AWARDS FOR WILMINGTON WATERFRONT PARK
WILMINGTON, Calif. — December 14, 2011 — The Port of Los Angeles has earned three prestigious engineering and design awards for Wilmington Waterfront Park, a 30-acre green space that has become a community icon since opening in June.

The Port received the 2011 Project of the Year Award by the Southern California Chapter of the American Works Association (APWA). The Port, along with consultant team Sasaki Associates, Inc., also received the 2011 Best Project Award in the Landscaping/Urban Planning category by Engineering News-Record (ENR) California Magazine.

In addition, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) has announced it will honor the Port of Los Angeles and Sasaki Associates, Inc. with the 2012 Merit Award in Engineering Excellence.

“These three prestigious awards from such highly respected organizations is a testament to the effort by both the Port and Sasaki Associates to design a world-class urban park,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the many Wilmington residents who led the effort to build a park the community would cherish for generations. Together, we have succeeded.”

Wilmington Waterfront Park is designed to serve as a buffer between Port operations and adjacent residences. The park’s 16-foot high slope along the south border serves as a noise barrier and offers elevated views of the Port from a new El Paseo Promenade.

The park, just a couple of blocks from the Bikernet Headquarters, is a 30-acre landscaped area with gentle slopes, lawns (grass and artificial), trees, bike paths, walkways, benches, water features, pedestrian bridges, restrooms, elevated observation points, a public events plaza, children’s playground, barbeques and a picnic grove.

Construction of the park began in 2009 and was completed in June 2011 at a total cost of $55 million.

THE SECRET CODE–For two years a man was having an affair with an Italian woman.

One night, she confided in him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, He paid her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child. If she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18.

She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write ‘Spaghetti’
on the back. He would then arrange for the child support payments to begin.

One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife.
‘Honey,’ she said, ‘you received a very strange post card today.’
‘Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,’ he said. The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted.

On the card was written:
Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti.
Three with meatballs, two without.
Send extra sauce.

MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS HISTORY, OUR MAN WAS THERE–When I wrote – We Got It Repealed in July of 1975 these are the people that did that.

Here is a copy of the sign in sheet for those who spoke at the Federal Hearings on HB-3869 in Washington DC on July 21,22 1975 that Repealed the Federal Blackmail Threat to States that did Not Pass Specific Laws that the NHTSA wanted.

Most Motorcycle Rights Organizations and Concerned Motorcyclist have been fighting since then to stop Senator Frank Lautenberg and others from bringing it back.

Motorcyclist Took On The Federal Government and WON!

The Government has been trying since that date to Re-Instate the Blackmail.
If they ever succeed it will bring an end to Motorcycle Rights!

It will send a message to Politicians that if they are persistent they can eventually take our rights away.

NEW TRIKE CLASS IN BONNEVILLE–Unmodified Lehman trike breaks speed record at Bonneville– A new international speed record for three-wheeled motorcycles was set this week by a Lehman trike at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The trike was unmodified save for a custom power plant, according to Lehman officials.

Piloted by racer Bill Chambers of Upland, Calif., the specially prepared Lehman Renegade reached a top speed of 123.404 miles per hour. The certified two-pass average over the course was 121.672, setting a new international record for the class.

The trike (see photo) used an unmodified Renegade conversion kit; however, it employed a custom V-twin power plant provided by engine developmental company Aces and Eights Racing from Deadwood, S.D.

“I think it is important to note that this speed record was attained using an unmodified Renegade conversion kit,” stated Ken Hines, president and CEO of Lehman Trikes. “This product is exactly what our customers purchase from their Lehman Trikes dealer.”

Racer Chambers said that the achievement at Bonneville “was one of the greatest highlights of my racing career. The Lehman Trike design is amazing in its stability and handling. I look forward to returning to the Salt Flats next year and bettering the international record.”
