HOT ACTION BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 16, 2015

Hey,

I’m on the edge this morning. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it was a woman, a virus, one too many projects. Maybe it had to do with not enough money. Who the hell knows? I suppose I want something to happen, and I want it now.

The Dalai Lama helps me when I get in a clinch. I read about suffering recently. I don’t like that word. Seems an odd word, but what he says makes absolute sense. When you are suffering it’s all about how you look at it. Say you get pulled over for speeding and you’re pissed. You can be pissed, or you can rejoice that the cop caught you before you ran over a small child. You can be pissed or you can share your story with brothers and prevent them from following the same destructive path.

Try to think about it the next time you could use the word Suffering. It’s fascinating how you can take a truly negative situation and make it extremely positive. Let’s hit the news:

BAD SENATOR OF THE WEEK–WASHINGTON (AP) —
Sen. Bob Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants who rose to become one of the highest-ranking Hispanic members of Congress, was charged Wednesday with accepting nearly $1 million worth of gifts and travel from a longtime friend in exchange for a stream of political favors on the donor’s behalf.

A federal grand jury indictment accuses the New Jersey Democrat of using the power of his Senate seat to benefit Dr. Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor who prosecutors say provided the senator with luxury vacations, airline travel, golf trips and tens of thousands of dollars in contributions to a legal defense fund.

The indictment from a federal grand jury in Newark charged the senator with 14 counts, including bribery, conspiracy and false statements, over his ties to Melgen. Melgen also was charged in the case.

The indictment clouds the political future of the top Democrat — and former chairman — of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who has played a leading role on Capitol Hill on matters involving Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. efforts to improve ties with Cuba.

Menendez, who has repeatedly asserted his innocence, was expected to make a statement later Wednesday in New Jersey. Melgen’s attorney did not immediately return a call seek comment Wednesday,

The indictment from a grand jury in his home state was the latest development in a federal investigation that came into public view when federal authorities raided Melgen’s medical offices in 2013. It depicts a relationship in which gifts such as round-trip flights to the Dominican Republican were quietly traded for favors such as political intervention in medical billing and contractual disputes.

Among the allegations is that Melgen provided Menendez with free trips to the Dominican Republican aboard his luxury jet and that the senator, between 2007 and 2012, never disclosed the gifts he received from the doctor.

In exchange for those and other gifts, prosecutors say, Menendez tried to influence immigration proceedings of Melgen’s foreign girlfriends, sought to protect a lucrative contract Melgen held to provide cargo screening services to the Dominican Republic and intervening in a Medicare billing dispute involving millions of dollars…

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION REPORT–Keep Our Interstates Toll-Free.

How would you like to see the number of tolls on America’s interstates multiply like rabbits? That’s just around the corner unless we make our voices heard.

You may think the interstate in your backyard is safe from having tolls slapped on it by politicians and bureaucrats, but the interstate tolling murmur is growing in Washington DC, and it’s coming from both sides of the aisle.

Under current law, States are prohibited from tolling any roads that were built since the inception of the Federal Interstate Highway System in 1956.

Last spring, President Obama proposed eliminating the longstanding ban on tolling existing interstates and giving every state the option of tolling them to raise transportation revenue. That means continuing to pay for roads with the current gas tax and then tacking on an additional toll for each interstate you use.

How bad can it get? Have you ever traveled through New Jersey and New York? Imagine suffering that tolling nightmare everywhere across the country. We’re talking about the possibility of hundreds of dollars in tolls for a single long trip. Try driving to Mexico.

But it’s not just Democrats who want to toll our existing interstates. Powerful Republican Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) recently voiced strong support for letting states toll any interstate they’d like. If this idea continues to get traction and the interstate tolling levee breaks, expect riding on interstates to get a lot more expensive, unsafe, and inconvenient.

The new highway bill could be up for debate at the end of May, and we need to fight hard against interstate tolls. One step the Motorcycle Riders Foundation has taken is joining the Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates, a broad coalition of interstate users and businesses who want to see our interstates protected from new tolls.

ATFI is building momentum through a national petition to keep our interstates toll-free. Please take 30 seconds to sign the petition today. You can also spread the word and help make tolling impossible for politicians by liking ATFI on Facebook and following them on Twitter. They put out a lot of good content, and the wider it gets circulated, the more public opposition there will be.

It is important to visit www.TollFreeInterstates.com to learn more about ATFI and sign the petition today. Help spread the word by directing your riding friends to also sign the petition.

SWAMP FOX BIKER BASH Brings Top Names, Big Value and Renewed Energy to Myrtle Beach Bike Week
Swamp Fox Biker Bash To Be Held in Marion, South Carolina During Myrtle Beach Bike Week With a Rally, Major Concert Series, Carnival of Events and Campground

MARION, S.C., March 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The Swamp Fox Entertainment Complex will be opening in Marion, South Carolina with The Swamp Fox Biker Bash, the ultimate east coast biker rally and concert series taking place May 8th through May 17th.

Bringing new life to Myrtle Beach Bike Week, The Swamp Fox Biker Bash is a rally and music festival unlike any other—past or present.

With the support of big name performers that include The Marshall Tucker Band and Craig Wayne Boyd (Season 7 winner of NBC’s The Voice) on Thursday, May 14th. Bret Michaels with opening act The Flaunt Girls (Biker Burlesque Troupe) on Friday, May 15th and Buckcherry on Saturday, May 16th —new excitement is coming to South Carolina during Myrtle Beach Bike Week.

But it doesn’t stop with the music. Swamp Fox Biker Bash is hosting an entire rally of events on its massive 250 acre property including Campgrounds, Motorcycle Stunt Shows, Amazing Food, Daily Burlesque Shows, Mechanical Bull Contests, Panoramic Rides, Build-offs, Smoke-Outs, Body-Painting, and even Live Alligator Wrestling. This is a one-of-a-kind event for bikers and music lovers to be a part of—with special ‘artist to fan’ experiences available as well.

What’s more, Swamp Fox is soon to be home to the World’s Largest Bar. The Swamp Fox Entertainment Complex will soon include a record-breaking bar extending over 800-feet. For many, this attraction alone will attract the fans to the Complex.

Biker Emcee extraordinaire and often-voice of Harley-Davidson and Jack Daniels, Dumptruck, will keep fans at maximum-fun as the voice of the Swamp Fox Biker Bash. Expect lively attractions, all-day live music and “I’m With The Band” readings with Pamela Des Barres to complete the overall biker and rock ‘n’ roll experience.

“Swamp Fox Biker Bash is not your typical rally with music. We’ve created a concert series and music experience that caters to bikers but allows the music and fan experiences to come first,” says Gabriel Gornell, Executive Producer of Swamp Fox Biker Bash. “Rock and Country are a big part of the biker lifestyle so it’s a perfect fit, and our dedication to the fan experience is what makes PledgeMusic the perfect partner for this event,”

Named as one of “The World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies of 2015” in Music, by Fast Company magazine for “helping artists and fans get what they want,” PledgeMusic and their direct-to-fan platform will give fans the AccessPass when they buy tickets, VIP access and merchandise through PledgeMusic. This pass will allow fans to receive updates that artists and the Swamp Fox Biker Bash crew will post about during the preparation for the bash. This limited time offer will provide an exclusive never-before-seen experience for the debut biker rally and concert series.

“We’re opening the Swamp Fox Entertainment Complex to support the arts for two reasons: the first, by bringing quality entertainment and national artists back to South Carolina with a premier 20,000 seat amphitheater located only 45 minutes from Myrtle Beach. The second, to support the local economy with sustainable long-term jobs through the amphitheater and festival ground,” says Robert Hartmann, Founder and CEO of Swamp Fox Entertainment Complex. “This property is uniquely positioned to accomplish both these things and we couldn’t be more excited about kicking things off with the Swamp Fox Biker Bash this May.”

Tickets are currently available with “BUY 3 NIGHTS & GET 2 NIGHTS FREE” five-night packages starting at $256 and ten-night packages starting at $317 in Chrome, Silver and Gold, granting access to all shows, attractions and campgrounds. Basic and VIP tent rental packages are also available along with multi-night RV Parking. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.swampfoxbikerbash.com.

NEW TWIN CAM OIL PUMPS FROM S&S–S&S Cycle has just released two new oil pumps for 1999-present Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 88, 96, 103, 110, and 120R engines. When it comes time to service your oiling system, why put in a copy of the pump that failed once already?

The new S&S TC3 Oil Pumps are much more resistant to damage from oil born debris and from excessive pinion shaft run out. Those are the two most common causes of oil pump failure in these engines. There are S&S TC3 Oil Pumps available for 1999-2006 and for 2007-later model year groups. Of course, 2006 Dyna® models use the 2007-up style pump.

Power Sports Business magazine has once again bestowed a Nifty Fifty award to S&S Cycle, this time for the new S&S TC3 Oil Pumps. The new S&S TC3 Oil Pumps and the related TC3 Cam Support Plates are new products for S&S Cycle, and are welcome additions to S&S’ Viola V-Twin (VVT) line of quality service parts. “This engine platform has been out there for 15 years, and some of them are getting pretty tired. Our customers are looking for premium quality service parts to put them back in top shape. These new S&S TC3 Oil Pumps from S&S are really going to help.” Says Kevin Boarts, Viola V-Twin Product Line Manager.

INTEGRITY REPORT FROM THE CENTER–Why the FDA doesn’t really know what’s in your food.

Massive legal loophole means companies can add new ingredients to foods with no government safety review

By Erin Quinn and Chris Young

Rebecca Fattell was enjoying breakfast at a hotel in Berlin last summer when, after a few bites of a roll, her mouth started to itch, her gums started to hurt and before long, hives covered her skin.

“My face, trunk, arms, legs,” Fattell said, “they were all beet red.”

She rushed to the emergency room.

Fattell, who is allergic to peanuts, is vigilant about what she eats and had been assured by hotel staff that her breakfast didn’t contain any. Hidden in the pastry, however, was lupin flour, which is made from a peanut-related legume that caused her reaction.

“I’m extremely careful,” said the 23-year-old New Yorker. “I just had no idea about lupin.”

Lupin is considered a “major food allergen” in Europe and must be labeled accordingly on packaged foods. In the United States, where lupin is less commonly used, there is no such requirement, leaving Fattell and others who suffer from peanut allergies vulnerable.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has known about lupin’s effects since at least 2008, but has made no move to require companies to identify it as an allergen on products sold in the United States.

Lupin is just one of thousands of ingredients companies have added to foods with little to no oversight from the FDA. They’ve taken advantage of a loophole in a decades-old law that allows them to deem an additive to be “generally recognized as safe” — or GRAS — without the agency’s blessing, or even its knowledge.

The loophole is so big that companies can market additives, like lupin, that the FDA has found to pose dangers. Even ingredients the agency has agreed are GRAS are now drawing scrutiny from scientists and consumer groups who dispute their safety.

Critics of the system say the biggest concern, however, is that companies regularly introduce new additives without ever informing the FDA. That means people are consuming foods with added flavors, preservatives and other ingredients that are not at all reviewed by regulators for immediate dangers or long-term health effects.

SMOKEOUT NEWS, Let’s Get Ready to Rumble — Awesome Garage-Built Steeds Appear at Worldwide Bike Events Including the Smoke Out Rally

Spring is in the air and DIY custom motorcycle builders worldwide are getting ready to unleash their handbuilt, two-wheeled creations on “civilian” society at various underground shows and via online websites catering to the garage-built biker lifestyle.

Officially and to law enforcement, the illegal, 3600-mile, cross-country chopper chase called the “Stampede” does not exist! It’s as rough and crazy as you think it could be, with badass biker enthusiasts from around the U.S., many who’ve been in the military, riding their garage-built ‘horses’ in a race to the “Smoke Out” Rally. Upon arriving in Rockingham, North Carolina, these “Stampede” bikers will join up with the rest of the 15,000 other counter-culture rebels attending this year’s 16th “Smoke Out” party (June 19-20) inside the fenced-in compound.

Inside, “It’s like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” recalls film producer Zack Coffman who made the rousing, knock-your-balls-off documentary Road 2 Smoke Out, and who explains, “For the past fifteen years the Smoke Out has been the most hardcore event for this passionate subculture of garage-bike builders. It was an honor to be asked to make a film capturing that essence.”

very cool. As we talked about earlier we need some leather OEM Road King saddlebags & mounts.

With the right color and a cool solo seat we can make it look very much like a ‘48 Pan.
We can order a CCI PAN EVO rocker box kit and use dual exhaust with fishtails.

QUICK, OPEN THE BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
An old geezer, who had been a retired farmer for a long time, became very bored and decided to open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: Dr. Geezer’s clinic. “Get your treatment for $500, if not cured get back $1,000.”

Doctor “Young,” who was positive that this old geezer didn’t know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000.

So he went to Dr. Geezer’s clinic.

This is what transpired.

Dr. Young: — “Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me?”

Dr. Geezer: — “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young’s mouth.”

Dr. Young: — Aaagh !! — “This is Gasoline!”

Dr. Geezer
: “Congratulations! You’ve got your taste back. That will be $500.”

Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money.

Dr Young: “I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything.”

Dr. Geezer: “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient’s mouth.”

Doctor Young: “Oh no you don’t, — that is Gasoline!”

Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You’ve got your memory back. That will be $500.”

Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days.

Dr. Young: “My eyesight has become weak — I can hardly see !!!!

Dr. Geezer: “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that so — ” Here’s your $1000 back.”

Dr. Young: “But this is only $500…”

Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500.”

THE HUPY/ABRAHAM LEGAL DEPARTMENT–Who’s Watching Me Now … Or Listening?
With technology comes quality of life. There are so many devices today that do everything from brewing a perfect cup of coffee to parallel parking your car for you, hands-free. There’s a more sinister side to some things we view as conveniences.

Some of you may be aware of the fact that Verizon has “super cookies” which capture everything you do with your phone, collect that data, and compile a dossier on your phone habits. If you want your phone use to be private, you should contact Verizon and have them disable the super cookies on your phone.

Many of us know that cellphone conversations can be captured, and even turning your phone off does not protect you from eavesdropping unless the battery is removed. But how many of you know that your personal TV viewing habits, and perhaps even personal conversations, can be captured and transmitted to a third party?

The so-called Smart TVs have built-in applications that allow you to access Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime and more. These TVs can also collect and store information on which programs you select to watch and are designed to be interactive, allowing third parties to customize advertisements to cater to your likes. There’s an added bonus to these TVs known as “voice recognition” which allows you to search for and select programs by just speaking to the TV. The problem with that is your spoken word is captured and transmitted to a third party. Well, isn’t that what it’s supposed to do? Yes, but anything you say, or any other spoken words or conversations in the background can also be captured, transmitted and stored. Does that make you feel a little more cautious?

If you have a Samsung Smart TV, read the privacy settings. In fact, I’ll save you some time. Here’s what Samsung has to say: “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition.”

If your privacy is of importance to you, consider disabling voice recognition on your TV. If you’re very sensitive to privacy issues, you could even prevent your TV from connecting to the Internet or accessing your home Wi-Fi network. You say you don’t want to miss out on programming by disconnecting everything? High-quality, high definition television without the “smart” functionality is capable of live streaming from the Internet with devices like a Roku.

Besides storing which programs you select to watch and possibly capturing private conversations, your smart TV also keeps track of which videos you order from third parties. Keep that in mind too. The age of privacy in the home is all but gone. Consider that anything you do or say may be intercepted by an eavesdropping device, not only in public places, but even in the comfort of your own home.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY
Grubstake: GRUHB-steyk

noun
1. money or other assistance furnished at a time of need or of starting an enterprise.
2. provisions, gear, etc., furnished to a prospector on condition of participating in the profits of any discoveries.

Quotes
He stands up when she hands him the address she’s just written on the shelter letterhead. “This’ll be my grubstake,” he says, folding the paper into his pocket.
— Mary McGarry Morris, The Last Secret, 2009
Origin
Grubstake is an Americanism that arose in the mid-1800s. It is a combination of the words grub, meaning “food; victuals,” and stake, meaning “a monetary or commercial interest in something.”

UNCLE MONKEY’S SPECIAL EDITION–
Everyone wants the special edition, and why not. Rarity has an allure that pulls us in, an exclusiveness that set us apart from everyone else.

Sometimes it is as simple as a stripe package but sometimes on those rare occasions it can mean something a whole lot more. More performance, more bling, more of everything. A little more time spent on engineering a little more time spent on assembly to make it a true special edition. Those in the know can spot them from a mile away; many imitate the subtle difference that makes them special.

It is all fun and games belonging to this special group. A bond that holds us together keeps us together but there is a dark side that lurks just below the surface. With special editions come special problems. Parts aren’t always off the shelf. Special decals are made in short supply and if they need to be replaced it can be expensive locating NOS or simply not being able to replace or reproduce them.

Drivetrain parts can be just as elusive. Stock OEM is too long, too short or just completely wrong. You waste time and trips to the parts store, waste even more when you realize that you have to go to the dealership. The naive parts counter guy hasn’t even heard of your model, has no idea what would be different.

You quickly learn the codes, so you can tell them where to look. It is this one and not that one, yes but we know. Parts are slow coming in. Precious artifacts necessary to keep that special edition special.

Sometimes we have to cheat, have to concede that just any regular part will have to do especially if we want to ride any time soon.

It is when those right parts come in, when we install those correct parts and fire up the engine that we know why we bought the special edition, why we had pined for it in the first place. The growl is deeper, the stance a little more menacing. A twist of the throttle tells us that there is something more, something special in the Special Edition.

LATUS MOTORS RACING HEADS INTO ROAD ATLANTA LOOKING TO BUILD OFF POSITIVES FROM OPENING ROUND–Kenny Riedmann Will Join Bobby Fong on the Team at Road Atlanta

ATLANTA (April 16, 2015) – The Latus Motors Racing team welcomes Kenny Riedmann to race alongside Bobby Fong in the MotoAmerica Supersport class at the Road Atlanta round in Baselton, Georgia, this weekend, April 17-19.

Riedmann, the reigning CSBK Pro Sport Bike Champion, will be riding the #21 Latus Motors Racing / Castrol / Triumph Daytona 675R and is eager to start his 2015 season on U.S. soil ahead of the Canadian Superbike Championship.

“First off, I want to thank the Latus Motors Racing team for giving me the opportunity to ride this weekend at Road Atlanta,” said Riedmann. “I’m looking forward to getting on a bike for the first time this season and am hoping to get the team a good result.”

Bobby Fong had a promising start to the 2015 season aboard his #50 Latus Motors Racing / Castrol / Triumph Daytona 675R, leading the first practice session and qualifying second at the Circuit Of The Americas last weekend. Rain started to fall just before the start of Saturday’s Supersport race, forcing riders to change from slick to rain tires. During the race, Fong was entrenched in a battle for first before sliding out on the last lap. He was able to remount his Daytona 675R and finish ninth.

“On the last lap, I was in second place and it started dumping rain. Unfortunately I hit a seam in the middle of the track and ended up crashing,” stated Bobby Fong. “There were a lot of positives, but not the results we wanted. Luckily we were able to salvage some points.”

Latus Motors Racing will be competing with a new purpose after the recently announced Castrol’s VETMotorsports Performance Match Fund. Sgt. Chad C., who was deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the Marine Corps, will be placed with the team as a crew member at Road Atlanta.

The MotoAmerica Supersport races will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00pm EDT and Sunday, April 19 at 1:00pm EDT. Television coverage will follow on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, April 26. For live timing and more information on the race weekend, visit www.MotoAmerica.com.

THERE YOU HAVE IT—This weekend will be a whirlwind of checking out antique motorcycles, fixing shit around the joint, and hang on for the following:

We will unbolt the Bonne Belle engine and prep it for it’s trip back to Departure Bike Works. The crate arrived.

A meeting is scheduled about our Bagger Editor Project with Paughco. It’s going to be a cool build for Tyler Ludlow, the new Bikernet Bagger co-editor.

We have another lead for the side of the building mural project. I need to go make a pitch with my hand out. Wish me luck.

I had the honor to hook up with Steve Huntzinger while we loaded a 1915 Hudson single in the back of Don’s new Ford Transit for the trek back to Los Angeles. I will bring you the story next week.

I now have an interview about the handmade wooden URNs. You’ll see it over the weekend if I don’t die trying. I also need to rebuilt that CV carb, finish a book, and another set of shocks are headed this way from Progressive Suspension for the Mudflap Girl FXR.

Have a helluva weekend.

Ride Free Forever,
