It’s been a strange week. The phone keeps ringing, e-mails flying, texts texting. Just this week we reached out to Scott Jacobs, Bob Kay flew in and borrowed the Mudflap Girl FXR and rode to Palm Springs. Sam Dixon will arrive today and report on Bandit’s Cantina Girls.

Bob broke down in Palm Springs, but Paul at Palm Springs H-D came to his rescue. He’s rolling back to the headquarters tonight.
 
 
 

Rock N Roll custom paint called and we’re sending a photographer and the Bonne Belle rear fender will finally get handled.

Progress was made on the next version Wheeler Work Station. Hell, we made a pitch to a local company about a mural on the side of the headquarters. We are working on a deck along side the building and the dread Famaghetti brothers are getting to work.

More progress reports at the end of the news including major progress with our Salt Torpedo trike effort.

Ultimate Sacrifice and Dauntless Courage of Warriors to be Honored at Buffalo Chip Freedom Celebration– The Sturgis Buffalo Chip has planned a full day of events celebrating American freedom and recognizing the courage and unbeatable determination of those who have stood ready to give their lives in defense of ours.

In recognition of our nation’s valiant veterans, the Sturgis Buffalo Chip has set aside Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015 as its 24th annual Freedom Celebration. Several brave souls have committed to making presentations to honor the fallen and imparting personal accounts of patriotism to those who attend. These special guests include many who have offered their lives and sacrificed their limbs and state of well being in the defense of liberty.

As part of the Freedom Celebration, the Buffalo Chip has organized a special ride to provide funds to organizations dedicated to supporting struggling warriors and their families. The Freedom Celebration Ride, which departs from Main Street, Spearfish, will conclude with a reception at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

Distinguished warriors wounded in combat will lead the ride including Wounded Wear/Combat Wounded Coalition founder retired Navy SEAL LT Jason Redman and Warrior Dog Foundation founder and former Navy SEAL Mike Ritland. These two dignitaries will be joined by the mother of the first Navy SEAL killed in Iraq, America’s Mighty Warriors founder Debbie Lee. These special guests will lead the procession of proud riders on a route through the majestic high plains of the northern Black Hills.

A $75 donation is required to participate in the ride and may be paid at registration or online at rallytickets.com. All ride fees are donated to the Freedom Ride charities supporting veterans in need.

The celebration on Spearfish Main Street will include an inspiring performance by the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest, Permanent Party, special vendors and an autograph session with celebrities, authors and dignitaries. Following the ride, the poignant celebration will continue at the CrossRoads at the Buffalo Chip with a program by veterans and catered reception. All are invited to make the donation and participate in the ride, including military veterans and anyone who wants to take part in honoring these brave men and women.

The Chip will also present the Bob Hanson Distinguished Service Award to yet-to-be-named honorees. Past recipients of this award include John McCain, and the families of Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, two Navy SEALs slain while saving many lives in the attack on the American compounds in Benghazi. REPORT FROM THE CENTER FOR PUBLIC INTEGRITY–Health insurers ‘may go the way of Blockbuster’

Commentary: Steven Brill believes insurance firms are simply getting in the way of cost control.

Remember Blockbuster?

In its heyday—which wasn’t so long ago—Blockbuster had 60,000 employees and 9,000 locations. For most Americans, for a minute anyway, it was the place to rent a movie. Then along came Netflix. And Redbox, which operates most of the movie-rental kiosks in convenience and grocery stores.

Before you knew it, Blockbuster was no longer a necessity. All of a sudden, it seemed, we could get the video entertainment we wanted faster and cheaper and, at least with Netflix, without having to leave the comfort of our homes. In 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy, just 25 years after it was founded. By last year, the last of those 9,000 stores had closed.

What will be the next Blockbuster? It very well might be your health insurance company, says Steven Brill, the entrepreneur and journalist whose 26,000-word Time magazine cover story about the absurdly high costs of American health care captured the nation’s attention two years ago.

“I see insurance companies as the weak players” in the U.S. health care system, Brill told me in a recent interview. By that he meant that insurers have become increasingly impotent middlemen in the battle to rein in health care costs.

“Aetna is Blockbuster,” Brill wrote in his latest book, America’s Bitter Pill: Money, Politics, Backroom Deals, and the Fight to Fix Our Broken Healthcare System.

He was quoting Ezekiel (Zeke) Emanuel, former health policy advisor in the Obama administration who is now a vice provost at the University of Pennsylvania.

Brill explained that what Emanuel meant “was that just as the video rental giant got overtaken by upheavals in how media is delivered, large insurers such as Aetna are going to be overtaken by changes in the structure and delivery of health care.”

As Brill notes, many of those changes were set in motion by the Affordable Care Act, which is making it necessary for doctors, hospitals and other health care providers to work together more collaboratively. Increasingly, Medicare and other payers are reimbursing health care providers based on how well they care for us rather than on how many separate, billable things they do to us.

As a consequence, hospitals are having to operate more efficiently, which is leading to a consolidation in the industry. There were 95 mergers just last year alone. That’s 44 percent more than in 2010, the year Congress passed health care reform.

STRANGEST MOTORCYCLE OF THE WEEK– If you think stuffing a three liter Ferrari V8 into a custom frankenstein motorcycle is a bit looney, you’d be right. But would you believe this wasn’t the first ridiculously fantastic creation by former two-wheeled racer Andreas Georgeades? And it wasn’t the last either.

After Georgeades realized he was pretty good at motorcycle racing, he spent the later part of the 1960s in the pursuit of creating the ultimate racer. In his quest, he became the first to successfully build and win first place with his Honda 600 four cylinder automotive engine powered Gran Prix racer.

The forums at CBX International chronicle a brief history of “George the Greek’s” two-wheel exploits. After achieving a fair amount of racing success including a podium in his first year at the Isle of Mann, he went on to tour the European and Canadian racing circuit in a Matchless 500 GP50 gran prix racer that he took possession of as payment for work in the restaurant business.

MRS. MONKEY BEHIND BARS– It’s been a while since Mrs. Monkey has been behind the bars of her own bike. She had been making steady process on her old bike but it wasn’t without its problems.

Mrs. Monkey had never ridden a vehicle with a standard transmission so she was having a problem getting the whole clutch and shifting process down. She started to get the hang of it but with me selling my bike to let my back heal she just didn’t get back on it.

When it was time to ride again, she lamented that she loved riding but hated the whole shifting gears. “If only they made a motorcycle with an automatic.”

So out with the old and in with a spiffy 1980 CM400A HondaMatic. The bike was the right size for her, promised to be a little easier for her to ride; she just wasn’t overwhelmed by the early ‘80s styling.

I was tasked with changing it up to improve the look. With a million-and-one projects on the go and my health kicking my ass it was slow going. That changed this spring with a letter from The Man demanding a full motorcycle license or face starting the whole process over from the beginning. I banged out the last couple of changes before paint but with a tight timeline I hung the OEM parts back on and dropped it back on the street.

Last night was her first ride on the HondaMatic. The first couple feet were awkward, but she quickly fell back into it making loops around in the empty parking lot. As the sun set it was time to head home, so I insisted she ride it home out on the streets. Without waiting for an answer I peeled out.

She quickly fell into the traffic. She even tackled the difficult hill near our house, her nemesis the first time around, without as much as a hic-up. Once home she gave me a big hug and kiss thanking me for making her dream come true.

The bike is just the right balance of power and nimbleness for her. She will continue to practice for the next few weeks to get back into fighting shape before she has to go for her test. The mild custom changes will have to wait until fall again. In the meantime she is happy to be back in the wind.

NOT QUITE LANE-SPLITTING— H.B 2512, introduced by Rep, Brian L. Clem (D-Salem), would allow motorcycle and moped riders to ride on the road shoulder when traffic has stopped or slowed to 25 mph or less and the motorcyclist is traveling less than 30 mph.

Tennessee is also considering a Lane-Splitting rule H.B. 1102.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION Washington Weekly Updates–

This week saw ABATE of Illinois lobbying Washington D.C. A team of seasoned citizen lobbyists and some newbies did a great job meeting with pretty much the entire delegation. All of the meetings were effective and successful. One office even cosponsored the House stop motorcycle only checkpoint legislation (HR 1861) before the group left for the week.

ABATE of Illinois and I also met with some of the higher-ups at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to talk auto-cycles. We are going to be working with NHTSA to redefine the federal definition of motorcycles to create a proper classification for the new three-wheeled vehicles hitting the streets. In a shocking turn of events, we all agreed that there needs to be a new category to capture enclosed or unenclosed, three-wheeled vehicles, possibly with side-by-side seating and steering wheels.

Motorcycle Awareness Month, a.k.a. transportation authority expiration month a.k.a. May. At the end of the month all federal transportation funding runs out. As of the end of this week, no solutions, extensions or even a Hail Mary plan exists. Please contact the MRF office if you or anyone you know is planning on attending Bikers Inside the Beltway (also you can also register via the MRF website).

The race to replace disgraced Congressman Aaron Schock has begun, and seems to have ended already. Not really, the actual primary is July 7th, but the heir apparent has emerged. Darin LaHood looks to have laced up the election. He is the son of former Congressman-turned-Secretary of Transportation and MRF Champ, Ray LaHood. Darin’s campaign announced that they had over $500,000 in the bank. As a state legislator, he was always supportive of everything that ABATE of Illinois asked of him. So we look forward to working with Darin in D.C.

WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT– California Fish and Game Commission Approves Early Implementation of Regulations Governing Lead Ammunition Ban for Hunting in California

A set of laws adopted in 2013 known as “AB 711” drastically expanded California’s ban on the use of lead ammunition for taking larger animals within the “California condor zone” to the taking of all animals throughout the entire state. It also required that the California Fish and Game Commission adopt regulations by July 1, 2015 that implement the expanded lead ammunition ban by July 1, 2019, or anytime sooner if “practicable.”

The NRA and the California Rifle and Pistol Association submitted a joint letter to the Commission urging that implementation of any regulation adopted now be postponed until the July 1, 2019 legislative deadline. The letter explains that the Commission does not have the authority to implement the regulations any earlier because to do so is not “practicable” due to the commercial unavailability of non-lead ammunition at this time and the lack of guidelines in place for how AB 711 will be enforced in the field.

At its April meeting the Commission nevertheless voted unanimously to adopt regulations that will be phased in incrementally through full implementation on July 1, 2019, but some of which take effect almost immediately. Hunters in California now need to be aware of when the phased implementation of the regulations will affect them.

Phase 1 will take effect as of July 1, 2015, and will require the use of alternative ammunition when taking any wildlife in State Wildlife Areas and Ecological Reserves and for taking Bighorn sheep anywhere in the state. Phase 2 will take effect July 1, 2016, and will require alternative ammunition for taking upland game birds with a shotgun and for shotgun hunting of small game mammals, furbearing mammals, nongame mammals and birds, and any wildlife for depredation purposes.

Hunting with traditional lead based shot, however, will continue to be allowed at licensed game bird clubs, as will hunting small game, furbearing, and nongame mammals and birds and wildlife for depredation purposes with traditional lead bullets (but not shot). Unless something changes, a total ban on the use of lead ammunition for the taking of any wildlife statewide will be the law in California on July 1, 2019.

Despite this setback, NRA and CRPA are not giving up on protecting their members who hunt in California from the lead ammunition ban. They will continue to monitor its implementation and enforcement to make sure hunters are treated fairly and according to the law.

The NRA and CRPA have been at the forefront of the fight to protect traditional ammunition in California for years and achieved important successes prior to the passage of AB 711. When so-called environmentalists began urging the Commission to expand the original ban to include additional species, such as rabbits and squirrels, NRA and CRPA began seeking records from all government agencies involved with condors.

After collecting, reviewing, and providing analyses of tens of thousands of documents, NRA and CRPA had experts present evidence at the August 2009 Commission meeting not only showing that the ban already in place was not effective, but also debunking some of the key scientific papers used to justify lead ammunition bans in general. When they were done, one Commissioner who had appeared to support the lead ban beforehand called the main study supporters of the ban were relying on as “pseudo-science” and voted against expanding the ban.

Proponents of expanding the lead ban did not put all of their eggs in the Commission basket. They simultaneously filed a federal lawsuit in Arizona seeking to prohibit the use of lead ammunition for hunting in the Arizona Strip, arguing that the Bureau of Land Management violated the Endangered Species Act by allowing it. NRA successfully intervened in the matter and was able to assist the government in defeating the lawsuit. And when another similar lawsuit was filed soon thereafter alleging the U.S. Forest Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act by adopting certain land management plans without adequately considering the alleged environmental impact of hunters’ use of lead-based ammunition, NRA teamed up with Safari Club International to intervene and again helped the government defend its policy of allowing lead ammunition for hunting.

The goal of the so-called environmentalists in bringing the Arizona lawsuits was likely to determine whether the courts would allow them to circumvent the drawn out regulatory and legislative processes. When that did not pan out for them, they returned to California with additional proposals for the Commission. And when they did so, the NRA and CRPA again made a presentation at the August 2012 Commission meeting, which prompted even the most avid lead ammunition ban supporters on the Commission to question the science of the lead ban proponents and to suggest the formation of a committee to determine whether lead ammunition was actually the real source of lead poisoning in condors and other wildlife. NRA representatives were to have seats on that committee.

Through the committee, the Department and the Commission were ready to investigate both sides of the lead ammunition debate, and to make an informed decision based on the facts and sound science, not the so-called environmentalists’ propaganda. But before the committee even started, the lead ammunition ban proponents circumvented the Commission’s committee process by convincing a legislator to introduce AB 711, where the science would not be scrutinized by people who have special knowledge on the subject.

So NRA and CRPA have been vigorously fighting to protect hunters from lead ammunition bans for years and will continue to do so.

PAUGHCO BIKERNET BAGGERS PROJECT BIKE REPORT–
I am late on the pictures. I did some quick work on getting the basic lines for the front fender …still needs a little tweek but you can see. I need to move it back a little and maybe up a little to allow for full wheel travel…

The real reason for these pictures is to show you the gas tank “quick sample” we made…this just shows we can use our Paughco shells and make a pretty cool one piece tank….I think it flows with the bike really well….I might make the final one a little wider in the front – and keep the small rear
size…I think we will need to try and get as much fuel as possible in it….Tyler said he plans on driving it so as close to 4 gallons the better….

I really need the frame side covers and saddlebag mounting brackets…any luck finding some road king leather bags ???

Friday, I plan on taking the fender off and take pictures of the fender-wheel spacer, brake mounts, axle, etc…all the stuff we need to do for the wheel.

NASCAR’s Future is Bright … and Young
New NASCAR Next Class Already Making Mark on Track–
Five of the six NASCAR K&N Pro Series race winners in 2015 are 21 years old or younger. The championship points leaders in both the East and West are 17 and 16, respectively. And a 17-year-old just became the highest-finishing female in the 61-year history of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

It is fitting that as fans celebrate Jeff Gordon’s final year of competition, the ranks of NASCAR are filled with young drivers battling to one day fill that void. And on Tuesday, in a building that honors the sport’s history, NASCAR introduced some of those potential future stars of the sport.

During a ceremony at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina, 12 drivers were formally announced as the newest NASCAR Next class, a group of up-and-coming talent that joins the industry program aimed at spotlighting NASCAR’s emerging stars.

“The NASCAR Next initiative spotlights the future of NASCAR, a collection of promising young talent who have shown the potential to one day reach the highest level of our sport,” said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president for Industry Services. “Alumni – and current members – of the NASCAR Next program are achieving success at the national series level, and we are confident that this class will build upon that foundation of excellence for many seasons to come.”

Now in its fifth season, the career résumé of NASCAR Next alumni is impressive, highlighted by Chase Elliott’s 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series championship, Kyle Larson’s 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award, and Cole Custer’s September 2014 win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, making him the youngest winner in NASCAR national series history.

Of the 28 drivers previously selected for the program, 21 have raced in one of NASCAR’s three national series (NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series), and 11 are competing full-time there in 2015.

The team was selected through an evaluation process that included input from industry executives and veteran racers. Drivers must be between the ages of 15-25, have tangible and expressed goals in eventual competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and demonstrate the potential to realize that goal.

Each driver in NASCAR Next must be actively competing in a NASCAR touring or weekly series – NASCAR K&N Pro Series East or West, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, NASCAR Mexico Series, NASCAR Whelen Euro Series or NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competitors also are eligible provided they are not slated to run a full season in their respective series.
 

The NASCAR Next members for 2015-16 are:

* Rico Abreu (23, Rutherford, Calif., Twitter: @Rico_Abreu) – A 2014 USAC national champion and winner of the 2015 Chili Bowl, he has two top-10 finishes in three K&N Pro Series East starts, his first season racing in stock cars.
 

* Nicole Behar (17, Otis Orchards, Wash., @NicoleBehar33) – Tied the series record for highest finish by a female driver in just her fifth K&N West start with her second place mark at Irwindale Event Center, and has top-10 finishes in four of six West starts.

* Kyle Benjamin (17, Easley, S.C., @kylebenjamin71) – This Roush Fenway Racing developmental driver earned his first K&N Pro Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway, and is the youngest race winner in ARCA history.

* James Bickford (17, Napa, Calif., @Bickford_James) – The 2014 K&N West Sunoco Rookie of the Year earned his first win at State Line Speedway last season and finished fifth in the season championship.

* William Byron (17, Charlotte, N.C., @WilliamByron) – With a win at Greenville Pickens Speedway and three top 10 finishes, he sits atop the K&N Pro East season championship standings.

* Cole Custer (17, Ladera Ranch, Calif., @colecuster00) – He holds the records for youngest pole award and race winner in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR’s touring series, and led late in the Truck race at Martinsville Speedway earlier this season.

* Ruben Garcia Jr. (19, Mexico City, Mex., @rubengarcia4) – The runner up in last season’s NASCAR Mexico Series season championship, he had one win and 10 top-10 finishes there while also competing in three NASCAR XFINITY Series races.

* Austin Hill (21, Winston, Ga., @_AustinHill) – Had three consecutive K&N East wins, in the final two races in 2014 and the 2015 season opener at New Smyrna Speedway where he captured his first pole award and led every lap.

* Jesse Little (18, Sherrill’s Ford, N.C., @jesselittle97) – Had a win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 2014 to finish fourth in the season standings. Won the pole at Bristol Motor Speedway in his 2015 K&N East debut.

*Dylan Lupton (21, Wilton, Calif., @LuptonDylan) – Was the 2014 K&N West championship runner up with a win at Kern County Speedway and registered 14 top-10 finishes; made his NASCAR XFINITY Series debut at Phoenix International Raceway in March.

* John Hunter Nemechek (17, Mooresville, N.C., @JHNemechek) – Earned six top-10 finishes in 10 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2014, and won the prestigious Snowball Derby Late Model race at Five Flags Speedway in December.

* Dalton Sargeant (17, Boca Raton, Fla., @DaltonSargeant) – Has a win at Kern County Raceway Park in the West this season, and four top-five finishes in five combined East and West races.

TRIUMPH RIDERS BRANDON ROBINSON AND JAKE SHOEMAKER
CONFIRMED TO RACE IN SUMMER X GAMES AUSTIN–
Brandon Robinson and Jake Shoemaker have accepted their invitations to compete in the inaugural X Games Flat Track Racing aboard their Triumph motorcycles at the Circuit Of The Americas in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, June 4.

The invite-only event is anticipating 23 riders from AMA Pro Flat Track’s GNC1 class competing for a coveted X Games gold medal. The complete schedule will also see BMX, Skateboarding, Moto X, Truck X and Rally X.

“I’m really looking forward to competing in the X Games. It’s huge, not only for the athletes and teams lucky enough to be invited, but for the sport of flat track,” said Brandon Robinson of the #44 Latus Motors Racing / Castrol / Triumph team. “I can’t wait to get out there and contend for a medal.”

The X Games will come on the heels of a busy couple weeks for Flat Track teams and riders. Rounds 3 and 4 of the AMA Pro Flat Track are scheduled for the previous two weekends, the Springfield Mile on May 23 and the Sacramento Mile on May 30.

“The X Games produces a lot of excitement, and I have high hopes it will do the same with flat track,” said Jake Shoemaker of the #55 Bonneville Performance / Castrol / Triumph team. “It’s a different venue with a different crowd, and the track layout should suit my style. I’m pumped to get out there.”

KAWASAKI Team Green Begins AMA Pro Flat Track Support-– Celebrating 34 years as the industry standard in racing support, Kawasaki Team Green has announced plans to offer support for the remainder of the AMA Pro Flat Track season. Kawasaki is posting more than $75,000 in contingency in the GNC1 class as well as sponsoring two-time Twins champion Bryan Smith and his No. 42 Crosley Brand / Howerton Motorsports / Villa-Esparza Kawasaki.

Over the last four years Kawasaki has seen a resurgence of its EX650 engine in Flat Track competition earning its first ever GNC Twin win in 2010 and claiming AMA Pro Flat Track Manufacturer of the Year in 2012 and 2014.

“This is a clear case of Kawasaki listening to our riders and expanding our Team Green program,” said Kawasaki Vice President of Marketing Chris Brull. “Over the last four years we have seen competitors in the AMA Flat Track series choose Kawasaki and we want to reward them for that choice. I got in trouble again when a Muslim I know invited me to see his Mosque to see him play in his Muslim tribute band last night.

They were called “Bomb Jovi”. Brilliant songs like “Losing my head over you,” “Rocket Launcher Man,” “You’re 6, You’re beautiful, and you’re mine.” Their last song “Living on a Prayer Mat” almost brought the house down.

Then this Muslim bloke started bragging about how he had the entire Koran on DVD. I was interested so I asked him, “Can you burn me a copy?” Well that was when the trouble started. Those people have no sense of humor!

Last year at the Smoke Out, Nicole Baker worked with Brian Whitcomb and Erin (RadioFox) and we had possibly the most monumental event that we have ever had at the Smoke Out.

Chopper Prom was amazing. I laughed so hard I actually felt like I did an ab workout the morning after Chopper Prom.
