A brother at lunch talked about getting up and sniveling about driving 120 miles to get to his office in the desert. But then he slaps himself in the face and repeats his company mission, which is to help folks live longer, more comfortable lives. He’s a doctor. He’s set up his business and employee training around that mantra. It’s not about driving 120 miles, and working on some old biker’s dinged elbow. It’s about getting into the overall health and lifestyle of a brother, so he can go way beyond the elbow pain.
We work constantly around here, but always with the mantra to help our readers and support our industry through good times and bad. If we ever fuck up, let us know. We will straighten out, or die trying.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION ALERT– Motorcycle Only Checkpoint Ban Legislation Introduced — Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) announced April 16th that he filed a bill, H.R. 1861, to prohibit the federal funding of motorcycle only roadside checkpoints, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports.
Sensenbrenner had this to say; “This bill protects motorcyclists’ rights and promotes crash prevention. Motorcycle only checkpoints profile motorcyclists, using taxpayer money to corral them along the highway and check for infractions that do not cause crashes. Preventing accidents is the best use of taxpayer funds and the most effective way to save motorcyclists lives.”
It is important to contact your sitting member of the House of Representatives and ask them to be a co-sponsor of this important legislation. Ask them to contact Congressman James Sensenbrenner and lend their support as co-sponsor of H.R. 1861.
This bill joins a similar one currently being considered by the U.S. Senate. S 127 was introduced in January by Senators Shaheen (D-NH) and Ron Johnson (R-WI). S 127 also prohibits the federal funding of motorcycle only roadside checkpoints. If you have not done so already, contact your two U.S. Senators and ask for their support of S 127.

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB FILES– Aussie anti-biker prosecutions are set to continue in Queensland under new state government
Queensland police are set to continue prosecuting members and associates of declared motorcycle clubs for breaking the governments anti-biker/anti-association laws by meeting in public.
Thirty people still face charges under laws introduced by the former Newman led Liberal National Party government which ban three or more biker “participants” from “knowingly meeting in public”.
Police last week offered no evidence in one prosecution, against two members of the Life and Death motorcycle club and the girlfriend of one member, for drinking together in the Dayboro Tavern.
The three all pleaded guilty to wearing prohibited items for donning vests linked to the club and were issued with small fines.
One, 40-year-old mother of three Sally Kuether, is a multiple sclerosis sufferer who spent six days in custody after being arrested.
She would have been jailed for a minimum of six months if found guilty of breaking section 60A.
A government ‘source’ told ABC News the dropping of the charges showed the prosecution was a “waste of police resources” and should not have progressed.
But new Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath has not indicated Labor will definitely remove the offence from the criminal code, saying the Government will not base any decisions on specific court cases.
Instead it will review the laws with a special taskforce reporting to the Premier in December.
Queensland Police also withdrew charges last month against three people who allegedly broke the laws in Mt Isa in February 2014.
But police said prosecutions were continuing against the remaining defendants, including seven people charged for meeting in the Yandina Hotel in November 2013.
Those defendants, allegedly members or associates of the Rebels motorcycle club, expect to fight the charges when they come to court in June.

SOUTH DAKOTA RAISES SPEED LIMITS IN TIME FOR STURGIS–
South Dakota became the latest state to kick up the speed limit, as an amendment to Senate Bill 1 passed on March 24, 2015 changing the speed limit on the state’s two interstate highways. The new law took effect on April 1 (no joke), so you’ll legally be able to travel at 80 mph on the I-90 and I-29, meaning that motorists and bikers going to the 75th Anniversary Sturgis Rally will arrive a little bit faster.
States across the country have been raising their speed limits as lawmakers argue that roads and cars are safer. Idaho, Wyoming and Utah have already raised their limits to 80 mph; on one toll road in Texas, it’s 85.

The Assembly Committee on Judiciary is expected to hear Assembly Bill 1154 on Tuesday, April 21 at 9 a.m. in room 4202 of the State Capitol. Please call AND email the members of this committee and urge them to SUPPORT AB 1154.
AB 1154 would provide that the California Public Records Act (CPRA) not be construed to require the disclosure of private information of civilian licensed CCW holders.
This legislation is essential for the protection of law-abiding gun owners in the Golden State. Recently, there have been several instances of anti-gun media outlets publishing the names and addresses of concealed carry permit holders which jeopardizes the safety and violates the privacy of law-abiding citizens. Such publications place lawful permit holders at risk to criminals who may target their home to steal firearms. An individual exercising his or her Second Amendment rights should not be put at risk of being a victim of gun theft by the public exposure of their private information, and enactment of this permit confidentiality legislation will prevent such abuse. The privacy of carry permit holders in 43 states is now protected by laws similar to AB 1154.

Time was when you could tune up your car with a few simple tools, a Chilton’s manual and some elbow grease. Not anymore. Today you almost need an IT degree just to pop the hood. And there’s a good reason for that. Modern vehicles incorporate complicated computers, electronic control units and multiple sensor arrays that constantly monitor and make adjustments to many of your vehicle’s operating systems.
Engine, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, safety systems now run on millions of lines of computer code—code that is protected by copyright law. That means you don’t own it and you’re not supposed to change it, even though it’s in your car. This comes courtesy of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the copyright law that governs what you can do with creative products like movies, music and software.
Under the DMCA, automobile owners who repair or modify their vehicle’s electronic control systems risk committing copyright infringement. Granted, most everyday drivers wouldn’t think of doing such things, but there is a dedicated class of tech-savvy tinkerers who can’t help but tweak and hack their way to better performance and more power. There’s also a thriving market for third-party suppliers of tuning services and tools. (Keep in mind that conducting performance modifications on your vehicle may void the factory warranty, especially if the modifications result in damage to your car.)
The ability to access and analyze vehicle software code also has value beyond the needs of the automotive hobbyist. It has serious research and probative value, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The EFF argues that allowing independent researchers access to the code without fear of legal consequences can identify vulnerabilities with important safety and security implications.
The EFF cites a case in which researchers identified a coding glitch that led to unintended acceleration resulting in a fatal accident. In another, researchers identified a security breach that would allow a remote attacker to assume control of a vehicle’s functions. Without such access, many potentially dangerous software issues would go undetected, the foundation argues.
The EFF lays out its case in a petition to the U.S. Copyright Office/Library of Congress. In it the foundation requests a DMCA exemption so owners, technicians and researchers can legally access vehicle computer code. You can find out more here and add your name to the petition if you’re interested.
This reminds us of the debate around event data recorders (black boxes) and the data they capture. The NMA’s position is that you, as the owner of the vehicle, own the black box and the data it captures, and you should have complete control over who has access to the information and how it is used. But, to date, only 15 states have enacted statutes related to black box privacy issues.
It’s important to realize that black box data and vehicle computer code may be regarded differently from a legal standpoint. Nonetheless, we’re glad to support any effort that gives motorists more freedom to choose the vehicle options and enhancements that make sense for them.
With the advent of advanced vehicle safety features and autonomous cars, our dependence on sophisticated computer programming will only increase. What impact will this have on our vehicle choices, and who will be held responsible if those vehicles fail because of a misplaced 1 or 0?

TROUBLE IN PARADISE–
Erik Buell Racing, an East Troy motorcycle manufacturer that was the successor to a company once owned by Harley-Davidson Inc., has ceased operations.
The sudden move, announced Wednesday, leaves 126 employees out of work. The company has more than $20 million in outstanding liabilities, according to its attorney, and is seeking court protection from creditors.
Erik Buell Racing is the sequel to Buell Motorcycle Co., which was owned by Harley-Davidson for more than a decade before Harley dropped the brand in 2009.
Initially, the new company produced hand-built $40,000 sport bikes for road-racing enthusiasts. More recently, it geared up to build a less expensive mass-production motorcycle with a racing pedigree.
Company founder Erik Buell invested his own money into the venture, while Hero MotoCorp Ltd., the largest motorcycle manufacturer in India, had a 49% ownership stake.
The company had done well on the national racing circuit, where it went head to head with much larger companies such as Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. But it struggled to gain sales in a marketplace dominated by Japanese and European sport bike manufacturers.
Erik Buell Racing had pursued the top 100 U.S. motorcycle markets and last year opened a European office to support a race team and build brand identity.
“The turn we recently took, after we thought we were moving forward, was unexpected,” Erik Buell said in a statement. “We thought we had secured funding, but in the end, we were not able to get the funding in place. Therefore we need to do the best we can under the circumstances for all parties in interest.”
The company is seeking protection under a state statute that is similar to federal bankruptcy law.
Bids will be solicited for the company as part of the Chapter 128 process, with the winning bid to be determined by a state court. At the company’s request, attorney Michael S. Polsky will be the court-appointed receiver.
Any proposed sale is subject to court approval and higher or better bids, according to Polsky. The company anticipates that its assets will be sold, according to a state Department of Workforce Development notice that announced the immediate termination of the employees.
“To say this setback is a disappointment does not begin to express what I feel right now. I am personally grateful for the support of our outstanding workers, customers and vendors. While this is a sad ending, I personally hope for a new and better beginning,” Buell said.
Creating a product from scratch is something the longtime entrepreneur knows a lot about, having founded Buell Motorcycle Co. in a Mukwonago barn 31 years ago and then starting over in 2009 as a manufacturer of racing motorcycles aimed at the highest level of the sport.
Buell, an engineer by profession, is known for carrying images of futuristic motorcycles on his cellphone. His company recently patented a 400-horsepower gas-electric motorcycle engine.
Employees and Erik Buell Racing dealerships learned of the shutdown Wednesday.
“This is disappointing. It’s an indication of how fragile things are in business, in general, and specifically in our category,” said Kirk Topel, president of Hal’s Harley-Davidson, a New Berlin motorcycle dealership that sells Erik Buell Racing bikes.
“I realized early on it would require some investment on my part, as a dealer, to help with brand awareness. But I was really encouraged with the efforts we put in last year,” Topel said.
Erik Buell Racing hired engineers from Yamaha, Boeing Corp. and General Motors. It worked closely with Hero MotoCorp on Hero’s designs and had plans to introduce some of those bikes to the U.S. market.
“To see them go down like this is just awful,” said Rod Copes, a former Harley-Davidson executive who is president of the North American division of Royal Enfield, an India-based motorcycle manufacturer.
“I believe that Erik Buell is the premier motorcycle designer in the world right now. The designs he has come up with, going back to his early days at Harley, … have advanced the designs of motorcycles throughout his entire career,” Copes said.

ANOTHER MAGNIFICENT WEEK APPROACHES— I’m going to ship our Bonne Belle engine to Departure Bike Works for inspection on Monday.
I’m excited to receive another set of lighter 13-inch shocks for the Mudflap Girl FXR. I need to whip up the second section of Jeremiah’s 2009 Dyna Progressive shock install. Plus, we need to rebuild the CV carb collecting dust on the bench.
We also need to drill some holes, and mount casters on our new Wheeler Work station. We plan to donate the original WWS to the Sturgis museum.
We will host a meeting with the Paughco team on the Bikernet Baggers project bike tomorrow and report in next week.
This will be a most auspicious week of renewed project development and kicking shit in the ass. Hang on!
