FLU BUG THURSDAY NEWS for March 28, 2013

Hey,

I have a notion for the government. Since they believe they need to regulate every aspect of our lives. How about a challenge? Fix the post office or turn in your membership cards and go home. The federal government has been dodging this issue for over ten years and put the post office even deeper it debt. There you have it, let’s get back to motorcycles.

My Mudflap Girl FXR is up and running. The crashed Shovelhead is on the mend with the help of Chris Morrison. Ray’s Bonneville rocket is moving forward, and Bob Bitchin’s stretched FXR is flying back together and should leave the Bikernet Headquarters tomorrow. My son’s Mudflap Girl FXR is now owned by my grandson, and he’s bringing it over tomorrow. We need to give it the Eddie Trotta break-in routine, so he can start riding it daily.

George the Wild Brush put the final touches on my FXR. Let’s hit the news. It’s going to be a crazy one.

NORTH CAROLINA House committee endorses helmets-optional law for most motorcyclists–

By Bruce Siceloff —

RALEIGH — Adult motorcycle riders would be free to ride without head protection under legislation, approved Tuesday by a House committee, to repeal North Carolina’s mandatory safety helmet law for most motorcyclists.

Helmets would be required only for motorcyclists younger than 21 and for inexperienced older riders who have been licensed to drive motorcycles for less than 12 months. Riders without helmets would have to carry enough insurance coverage to cover the first $10,000 of their medical bills from crash injuries.

Members of the House Transportation Committee agreed, in a divided voice vote, that North Carolina should join 31 other states that give most bikers the freedom to decide for themselves.

“I always wore a helmet to protect myself,” said Rep. Rodney Moore, a Charlotte Democrat who said he hasn’t driven a motorcycle in a few years. “But when you look at a person’s rights, they have a right to decide whether they want to wear a helmet or not. They should be able to make a reasonable decision.”

Another former motorcyclist argued in favor of mandatory head gear.

“I have concerns about the cost to the public of long-term brain injuries,” said Rep. Rick Catlin, a Wilmington Republican. “And having had a motorcycle myself and wearing a helmet, it saved my life before.”

He said later it had been many years since a crash in which he credited his helmet with saving him.

“I support the requirement in the law now,” Catlin said. “Motorcycles fall down a lot.”

Legislators did not ask for a review of crash safety studies from their staff or from state public health experts. Rep. John Torbett of Monroe, the bill sponsor, offered statistics to support his contention that helmet laws do not reduce injuries or medical costs.

But there were safety advocates in the audience who argued later that North Carolina’s helmet requirement is a big life-saver. Tom Crosby of Charlotte, president of the AAA Carolinas Traffic Safety Foundation, said the Centers for Disease Control ranked North Carolina tops in the nation for saving lives and cutting costs with its helmet rule.

“They say the helmet law is the most effective safety measure to prevent traffic deaths in the United States, and we’re number one,” Crosby said. “You wonder why, when you’re the safest in the nation, why would you want to change it?”

Rep. Larry Pittman, a Concord Republican, said motorcyclists should be allowed to accept the risk of injury.

“If the person chooses not to wear a helmet and anything happens, he’s not hurting anybody but himself,” Pittman said.

Torbett’s bill would reduce the current penalty for violations of the helmet law, to make it a $25.50 infraction. Violators no longer would have to pay $130 in court costs. Before it can become law, the legislation must be considered by the House Judiciary Committee, the full House and the Senate.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS FROM DR. WEIL–Skipping breakfast is rarely a good idea, but starting the day with unhealthy choices won’t do your body any favors either. A healthy breakfast helps the body absorb more vitamins and minerals throughout the day, helps lower cholesterol and can help control weight.

It’s easy to eat right: the ideal breakfast should provide one quarter to one third of your day’s protein, a fair amount of fiber (as low-glycemic carbohydrates) and some healthy fat. Here are some quick, healthful ideas:

1.A bowl of whole-grain cereal with calcium-fortified, carrageenan-free, unsweetened soymilk and some fruit. Add a tablespoon of freshly ground flaxseeds on top as a source of omega-3 fatty acids.

2.A soy shake (blend 1/2 cake silken tofu, 1/2 cup apple juice, 1 cup frozen organic strawberries and 1 banana). If you don’t like tofu, add a tablespoon of unsweetened peanut butter – it’s a good source of heart healthy monounsaturated fats and provides protein, fiber and vitamin E.

3.Keep some hardboiled eggs (choose free-range, omega-3 fortified eggs) on hand to eat with whole-grain toast. Include a glass of calcium-fortified orange juice and a container of plain, unsweetened yogurt. Add your own fruit.

And don’t shy away from coffee with your breakfast – it is a good source of antioxidants, and research has linked coffee to a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes as well as improved mental health as you age. I suggest finding an organic or fair trade version. If coffee causes side effects such as anxiety, tremors or irritation of the digestive system, drink tea – it is a healthy alternative.

ALABAMA ONLY STATE THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE A MOTORCYCLE LICENSE–

By Mike Cason

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — A bill to end the Alabama’s distinction as the only state that does not require a motorcycle license failed to pass during the first half of the legislative session.

Every other state requires a motorcycle license or a motorcycle endorsement on a regular driver’s license to operate a motorcycle, said Anne Teigen, a policy specialist with the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In Alabama, anyone 16 and older with a regular driver’s license can also drive a motorcycle in the state, said Capt. Guy Rush, chief examiner of the Driver License Division for the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Rush said an oversight in the 1990s led to the gap in the law and DPS is supporting legislation to fix the mistake.

The state Senate in February passed a bill to require motorcycle drivers to have a Class M endorsement on their license. The bill is pending in the House of Representatives.

As originally written, the bill required drivers to pass a motorcycle knowledge test to get the Class M designation. But the Senate amended the bill to limit the testing requirement to those under 19.
They would pay $5 to take the test and $18.50 to add the Class M endorsement, Rush said.
Those with a regular driver’s license age 19 and older would not be required to take the test, but would have to pay the $18.50 to add a Class M endorsement, Rush said.

Drivers who wanted to add the Class M at the time of license renewal would pay $23.50, Rush said.
“This is a first step to get us toward more safe operation of motorcycles,” Rush said.

Under current law, drivers can ask to take the knowledge test to get the Class M endorsement on their license. But the law does not require the endorsement to operate a motorcycle.

Rush said he would eventually like to see the state require a skills test before issuing a motorcycle license.

Rep. Allen Farley, R-McCalla, House sponsor of the bill, said he would also eventually like to see a skills test.

“The bottom line is just strictly nothing else but we’re trying to save a life,” said Farley, a former police officer and assistant sheriff in Jefferson County.

Farley said an inexperienced motorcyclist is a danger to other drivers who might crash or run off the road to avoid a motorcycle that has gone down in traffic or is operating erratically.

The motorcycle license bill, sponsored by Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, was changed slightly in a House committee. So it would have to return to the Senate if it passes the House.

I am highly interested in your product. I am an old Evo certified H-D mechanic who has always wrenched my own ride. I appreciate the detailed descriptions of all processes to install the system.

I have intentions of going this route on a 2008 Crossbones that I bought new in ’08. Are there any specific suggestions for that model bike? It is completely stock with 20,000 miles on it right now. No problems ever with the bike, but ready to step up the performance and power. Thanks to all of you there. – KJJ.

THE BAN IS DEAD—FOR NOW — Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said on
Monday that a controversial assault weapons ban will not be part of a Democratic gun bill that was expected to reach the Senate floor next
month. After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored – which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines – wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was
already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat…

Reid’s decision highlights the tightrope walked by the majority leader in governing the gun control issue. Trapped between the White House and rank-and-file Democrats who support broad gun control legislation following the shootings last December in Newtown, Conn., Reid must also be mindful of red-state Democrats up for reelection in 2014 who favor gun rights. And the decision to drop the assault weapons ban from the package illustrates the fact that any big changes to gun control legislation will still be challenging.

Aside from the ban, three other major pieces of gun legislation have been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee: a gun trafficking bill, a Democrats-only background checks measure and a proposal to increase school safety… (For several weeks, most pundits have viewed the attempt to outlaw private-party transfers under the guise of “universal” background checks as The Regime’s actual goal this year. The so-called trafficking bill goes even farther along those lines, criminalizing such things as leaving a firearm in a home with an unrelated roommate for more than a week..)

AUSTRALIAN MC CLUBS HOLD PEACE TALKS IN MELBORNE– Feuding motorcycle clubs, the Hells Angels and Bandidos, have held peace talks in Melbourne, Australia, raising hopes that a biker war could be averted after the attempted murder of Bandidos sergeant-at-arms Toby Mitchell.

Adam Shand, a well known reporter says he has learnt that Mr Mitchell, accompanied by a group of senior Bandidos, met their Hells Angels counterparts in West Melbourne in recent days.

The group initially met at a Victoria Street cafe then moved their meeting to a cafe across the road. Onlookers said the meeting was tense but ended without violence.

The Hells Angels and Bandidos have been at loggerheads since Mr. Mitchell and other Bandidos were ambushed outside the Melton headquarters of an affiliate club this month. Unknown gunmen exchanged up to 30 shots with the Bandidos in what has been described as an assassination attempt on Mr. Mitchell but the Bandidos enforcer escaped with a singe bullet wound to his right bicep.

The attack was linked to Hells Angels members and their associates.

This was the second attempt on Mr. Mitchell’s life after he was shot five times outside a Brunswick gym in November 2011.

Police have tried to bring the leaders of the clubs together for peace talks but were rebuffed.

In the wake of the shooting, police launched a crackdown, Operation Resound, which targeted members and associates of the Hells Angels, Bandidos and Rebels motorcycles clubs.

Police feared a full-scale conflict might erupt after learning that the Bandidos had declared war on the Hells Angels after the shooting.

It’s not known whether the West Melbourne meeting has led to a truce between the clubs but insiders say it is a sign that a workable solution could be thrashed out.

“No one wants to see a war if it can be avoided,” one insider said. “They all have too much to lose.”

Victorian bikers saw what happened during Melbourne’s gangland war when more than 30 people died at the hands of paid hit squads, he said.

“There were no winners,” the insider said.

An outbreak of public violence would strengthen the hand of the Victorian government, which plans to introduce anti-association laws to break up violent motorcycle groups.

Efforts to ban the clubs received a major boost last week after the High Court upheld the constitutionality of Queensland laws used to ban the Gold Coast chapter of the Finks motorcycle club.

Other states are expected to consider using the Queensland law as the basis for re-drafting laws that may lead to uniform gang legislation in Australia for the first time.

The Gillard government recently unveiled anti-gang laws and a $64 million national task force to tackle organized crime.

CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL POSTS RULES FOR LEGAL LANE-SPLITTING–

By Tony Bizjak The Sacramento Bee

Lane-splitting. It’s a slick maneuver motorcyclists love, allowing them to cut between slower moving cars and shoot out ahead. Car drivers, often startled, hate it – calling it brazen and dangerous. Is it safe? Is it legal?

Hoping to clarify the controversial practice, California officials have taken the unusual step of issuing a set of guidelines that affirm the move’s legality but point out that there are only certain instances where it is considered safe. California is the only state in the country that allows lane-splitting, also known as “white-lining,” where motorcyclists pass vehicles in adjacent lanes by driving between them.

“There is a need to acknowledge lane-splitting is being done in California, and a need to help people understand what is reasonable,” said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Pope. “Until now, no one in authority has said how to do it safely.”

The guidelines say motorcyclists can ride between two cars if there is room, but must do it at no more than 10 miles per hour faster than the vehicles they are passing. The guidelines also make it clear that motorcyclists should not attempt the maneuver at full freeway speeds, or in any traffic going 30 mph or faster. That essentially means the highest speed a motorcyclist should be going when lane-splitting is 39 mph.

CHP officials say lane-splitting is more risky at higher speeds because motorcyclists have less time to react when something unexpected happens. “We are trying to get people to slow down,” the CHP’s Pope said. “A lot are traveling at 40 mph or faster. The faster you go, the harder it is to stop.”

Pope said the guidelines do not reflect new policy. The CHP has long held that lane-splitting is legal in California because nothing in the state Vehicle Code specifically prohibits it. Many states have explicit prohibitions against lane-splitting. Nevada state law, for instance, reads, “a person … shall not drive a motorcycle … between moving or stationary vehicles occupying adjacent traffic lanes.” Oregon, Washington and Arizona have similar language in their highway codes. Other states simply consider the maneuver unauthorized, according to the American Motorcyclist Association’s national cycling rules database.

Several motorcycle activists lauded the guidelines for affirming California’s unique lane-splitting privilege. “They are very reasonable,” said Greg Covel, executive director of ABATE of California, a motorcycle rights organization. Now, “we know what the guidelines are, how close we are to staying within the law or pushing the law,” Covel said. “If we get stopped for unsafe speed or lane changes, we know what we are getting into.” CHP officials say they sometimes ticket motorcyclists who are lane-splitting, but citations are based on an officer’s determination that the rider is going too fast for conditions, or that the rider’s lane changes are unsafe.

The state guidelines can be found at www.chp.ca.gov under “CHP Programs,” by clicking on the headline “California Motorcyclist Safety.” It also is viewable at ots.ca.gov, under “What’s New at OTS.” The guidelines note: • Inexperienced motorcyclists should not lane-split.
• On freeways (when traffic has slowed to below 30 mph), motorcyclists should lane-split only between the two fast lanes. The slow lanes are too dangerous because vehicles there switch lanes more often coming from onramps and getting to offramps.

• Motorcyclists should not lane-split in toll booth queues.
• Law enforcement officers can, at their discretion, determine that a motorcyclist is lane-splitting unsafely.
• Other drivers should not try to impede motorcyclists from lane-splitting.

NEW FROM THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–1938 is a significant year in the history of Sturgis – it’s the year of the first AMA sanctioned race conducted by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club which is the event that is widely recognized as the beginning of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

At that time, nine racers took part in the races in Sturgis, and about 200 spectators came to enjoy a weekend of racing and riding. Indian motorcycles are important to the history of the Sturgis Rally, as well, because the driving force behind getting the Jackpine Gypsies started and making those first races happen was J.C. “Pappy” Hoel, and Indian Motorcycle dealer in Sturgis.

So, when John Paul DeJoria was searching for just the right motorcycle to place in the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, a 1938 Indian made the best sense. He found this ’38 in Colorado, and had it restored by Mike Tomas of Kiwi Indian Motorcycles.

Hang on for the full report on this fine restoration on the pages of Bikernet and in the Sturgis Museum department this week—Wilburn Roach

CHIEF OPEN TO MOTORCYCLE NOISE–
Shortly after Police Chief Celaya took office, he was kind enough to schedule a meeting with a group of concerned citizens to discuss motorcycle noise in Calistoga. As anyone who lives here or visits the town knows, loud motorcycles tend to dominate the downtown on weekends and other days when weather is mild.

We were encouraged by our meeting with Chief Celaya, and were left feeling optimistic that the city police will rein in this illegal activity. Prior to our meeting, I was also pleased to see Chief Celaya walking in town and talking to townsfolk (including me!) on the day after he was sworn into office. In the last few days I was further encouraged to see the local police officers riding bicycles. Patrolling in this way has many benefits; it allows officers to see a lot more of what’s going on, it keeps them healthy and trim, and it conserves on fuel usage and wear and tear on police cars.

I welcome Mitch Celaya to his new job, and hope that he will lead the police department in not only dealing with serious crime, but also in making the town a pleasant place to live, and to visit. Controlling the illegal noise from motorcycles would go a long ways in making the town a much more habitable and peaceful place for all us.

THE BIKERNET FREEDOM BUREAU—We’ve started a new awareness program. It’s interesting and we are attempting to write a grant to study Freedom in America, and what’s happening to it.

From time to time we will report on items that need our attention. A buddy came into the shop today. A friend had got out of bed and passed out. He went to his primary care doctor and told him what happened. The doctor told him immediately that we was required BY LAW to report this incident to the government, and that his driver’s license would be revoke.

His problem could be as simple as a vitamin deficiency, but he may lose his license for life. Is this something new from Obamacare?

How about this. Michelle Alexander recently wrote a book called the New Jim Crow, about mass incarceration in the United States. She pointed out some grizzly statistics. Did you know that there are first time drug users in jail for life. Smoke a joint in your living room is some places, like Utah, and you could go to jail. You can drive 20 miles over the speed limit, endangering several folks, and get a ticket, but smoke a joint and go to jail.

Watch out, and get involved. Join your local motorcycle rights association.

TWO ASHLAND MEN CONVICTED IN MOTORCYCLE CHOP SHOP —Two men from Ashland, Ky. have been found guilty of participating in a motorcycle theft ring.

A jury in U.S. District Court in London, Ky. convicted Richard Meade, 65, and Mark Justice, 53, of conspiracy to engage in money laundering by illegally transferring the ownership of stolen motorcycles, possession of motorcycles with altered vehicle identification (VIN) numbers, and illegally transferring ownership titles of stolen motorcycles.

A third defendant, George Ferguson, 64, on trial for the conspiracy charge, was acquitted.
Prosecutors said Meade and Justice sold approximately 30 motorcycles out of car lots in Ashland. They sold the motorcycles for between $13,000 and $15,000 apiece.

Justice and Meade participated in a conspiracy in which co-defendant Robert Jason Chapman of Cincinnati coordinated trips with others to motorcycle rallies in South Carolina, South Dakota and Florida. At these events, Chapman and others stole motorcycles and brought them to Kentucky to sell.

Chapman previously admitted that he and a co-defendant removed parts of the stolen motorcycles and replaced them with aftermarket parts bearing different vehicle identification numbers (VIN). He then registered the stolen motorcycles with the new VIN numbers in Kentucky. Meade and Justice then took some of the newly registered motorcycles and sold them.

The FBI and Kentucky State Police identified nearly 200 victims in this case including the original motorcycle owners and insurance companies.

Six other people previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the case.

Meade and Justice are scheduled to be sentenced July 24, 2013. They face up to 20 years in prison on the illegal transfer of ownership titles charge and the conspiracy charge.

Possessing motorcycles with altered VIN numbers carries a maximum 10 year penalty.

The jury reached the verdict Tuesday night after approximately 3 hours of deliberations following more than three weeks of trial.

BACK TO DR. WEIL AT THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–
Four Unhealthy Breakfast Choices. Last time we covered three healthy breakfast options; today we present four breakfast foods to avoid.

1.Doughnuts. High in sugar, trans-fats, calories and refined flour, doughnuts are not only bad for your waistline, but ultimately disastrous for your energy levels as well. The high sugar content is likely to end in a midday energy crash. If you crave a doughnut, try a piece of whole-grain bread with some jam and peanut butter instead.

2.Fast-Food “Breakfast Sandwiches.” The combination of low-quality fried meats, processed cheese, and refined breads add up to a high-calorie, high-sodium unhealthy food. A better option is to make a sandwich at home – include whole-grain bread, and high-quality cheese, along with fresh veggies to boost your morning fiber.

3.Sugared Cereal. While different brands vary widely in the amount of added sugars (do your homework and read the labels), sugared cereals should not be a part of your morning routine – or your diet, period. If you crave sweetness, try adding a half-teaspoon of sugar or stevia to unsweetened whole-grain cereals, or try a bowl of steel-cut oats with some blackstrap molasses, which provides added doses of calcium and iron.

4.Granola. This healthy sounding mix of rolled oats, grains and sometimes fruits and nuts can be healthy, but you need to read the labels. Granola can be a source of unhealthy polyunsaturated fats and a larger amount of sugar than you may suspect. Instead of a bowl of granola, add some to unsweetened, organic yogurt for added flavor. When choosing granola, opt for full-fat, low-sugar versions.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–
pharaonic fair-ey-ON-ik, far-, adjective:

1. (usually lowercase) impressively or overwhelmingly large, luxurious, etc.: a construction project of pharaonic proportions.
2. (sometimes lowercase) of or like a Pharaoh: living in Pharaonic splendor.
3. (lowercase) cruelly oppressive; tyrannical: pharaonic tax laws.

Next to it a picture of a gold-and-silver-threaded pharaonic tapestry with a band around it showing ducks flying and their wings like crowns, very pretty Islamic thing.

— Joseph McElroy, Night Soul and Other Stories, 2011

At La Chacarita, the wealthy are laid to rest in huge pharaonic tombs; mausoleums are styled after famous chapels.

— Lloyd Jones, Here at the End of the World We Learn to Dance, 2008

Pharaonic’s root can be traced back to the Egyptian literally meaning “great house.” While the noun Pharaoh entered the language though Old English, English speakers didn’t use this particular adjectival form until the late eighteenth century.

BOWYER FIGHTS LAWSUIT IN SOUTH DAKOTA–NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer has asked a South Dakota judge to dismiss a motorcycle company’s lawsuit against him that alleges he didn’t pay for $31,000 of custom work it did on his Harley-Davidson.

Klock Werks Kustom Cycles in Mitchell says it did the work on Bowyer’s motorcycle about four years ago. The company is seeking the money plus 18 percent annual interest, along with attorney and court fees.

Bowyer, 33, who was the runner-up in NASCAR’s top-tier Sprint Cup series in 2012, says he repaid the debt through promotional services, The Daily Republic reported.

He also says the court in South Dakota’s Davison County has no jurisdiction over him because his agreement with Klock Werks was made in Arizona, the motorcycle was purchased in Minnesota and it was delivered to him in North Carolina.

In an affidavit filed Feb. 28, Bowyer and his Sioux Falls attorney, Steve Sanford, said he ”has never set foot in South Dakota in any way related to this dispute.”

Bowyer said he attended the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis three times, ”but not with the motorcycle in question here.”

Klock Werks argues that because the work on the motorcycle was done in Mitchell, and because Bowyer or his personal representatives contacted Klock Werks in Mitchell by phone, emails and text messages to discuss the motorcycle, the South Dakota court does have jurisdiction.

Bowyer maintains that in exchange for Klock Werks’ work and materials, he arranged for owner Brian Klock and others to attend a NASCAR race in Daytona, Fla., and got them access to restricted areas; personally met with Klock and his guests at the track; arranged for Klock to ride the motorcycle into the speedway and to record the event for promotional use; attended a four-hour photo shoot with the motorcycle; and allowed Klock the ”use of my name, picture, and other intellectual property” so the motorcycle could be featured on the cover of the June 2009 issue of NASCAR Illustrated and in other publications.

Bowyer also says in his affidavit that he paid Klock Werks $5,000 for the paint used on the motorcycle after Klock told him it was not part of the promotional deal.

Sam Wheeler, E Z Hook Streamliner spotted at the Drag Specialties show looking for a 400 mph pass this summer on the Bonneville salt Flats at the Bub’s Bonneville motorcycle only event.

A beautiful bright ass full moon is blastin through the tilted slats shading my bedroom window over looking a very busy, cluttered desk. Spent last weekend attending the Drag Specialties show with Paul Kittrell of Lyndall Racing Brakes displaying the finest in composite brake offerings, the latest generation composites are flawless in stopping ability, fit and finish thanks to strategic partnerships in the motorcycle industry.

The machine shop of Marc Susman’s, Colorado Custom Cycle Wheels provides today’s flawless fit and finish, with the capability of machining rotor carriers to match your wheel, the possibilities are limitless. We are working with Marc and his team on our final racer details.

Bikernet sponsors at the show last weekend were plentiful, including BDL, Custom Cycle Engineering, Fueling, Klock Werks, LaPera, Paughco, Progressive Suspension, Rivera-Primo, Samson Exhaust and Windvest. All are on board with Bikernet and all are Drag Specialties dealers and all deliver the goods on time.

The 5-Ball Racing Team’s 124 inch Twin Cam Turbo-Charger Raycer is on the table at Marc Susman’s machine shop receiving final one-off pieces. Monday morning Juan started mocking up the shift linkage, I chased fresh hardware while the craftsman next door in the machine shop machined a bronze bushing for the shifting shaft to ride in. Marc’s right hand fabricator/welder/machinist Juan fabricated a plate where we’ll mount the shift arms. The parts and pieces are coming together just like we have a plan.

Yesterday morning I started mocking up handle bar risers for street riding. The risers are Susman designed, machined and black anodized to perfection. The tapered leading edge is to cool. The handlebar height and foot peg location feel okay on the rack, only road time will tell.

With 134 days until Speed Week Tech Inspection we have a plan and a date on the salt looking for the flagman to point, then vigorously cut a perfect figure eight in the air. Then we snap and duct tape the darkest available visor to the lightweight Arai helmet, take a deep breath, click into first gear and gently Haul Ass down the track.

Thanks….With one helleva lot of help from my family and Industry friends….Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

We’re on track for a stellar year on the street and on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

MOTORCYCLE SUPERMOTO RACE WILL RUN THROUGH DOWNTOWN STURGIS—

By Doreen Creed – Meade County Town Hall

The tire print of motorcycles is expanding in Sturgis, SD. Come September “The City of Riders” will host its first-ever national series supermoto. On a 7 to 1 vote the council gave its stamp of approval to Matt Stewart, USA Pro Supermoto and Dirt Promotions/Cycle Hutt to use city property and services for the USA Pro Supermoto Race to be held Sept. 14-15 in the downtown corridor. A supermoto is a motorcycle race involving off-road cycles on an artificially-made dirt track with jumps/obstacles and paved streets. The lone no vote came from the only member of the council, who is also a member of the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club, Ron Waterland.

Approval followed lengthy dialog between the council, Jack Hoel, Mike Bachand, Roger Schieman and Bill Peterson, who were against the action. They were counterbalanced by comments from Cycle Hutt owner Tammy Bohn, the firm’s marketing director Cara Oviatt, Chamber director Lisa Weyer, racer Mike Neel, and the owner of Sturgis’ newest business in the industrial park, King Cavalier.

Bohn acknowledge that other areas in the Sturgis area were investigated for this race but in the end, “Downtown is the draw…It’s the place they want to be…They want to race downtown Sturgis.” The downtown business owner said it’s “tough” to get people to come to Main Street during most of the year. “Hopefully other cycle shops will move downtown.” She said her company was infusing at least $20,000 into the event and that “time is of the essence” to insure Sturgis is part of the Colorado annual race series.

Former motorcycle racer-track official Jack Hoel was irate. He disputed the planned safety measures and termed this “a suicide mission”. He said the event’s timing and location were wrong citing the rally as a better choice. “This is counter-productive,” adding the city was wrong to close Main Street “every time someone has a pipe dream. This is not a well thought out event…Someone will get killed or crippled…It will come back to haunt everybody. Don’t do it.”

Sturgis Chamber of Commerce Director Lisa Weyer said there was a need to have new, imaginative events. “We need this commerce in our community … We need to look outside the box.” Then apparently to address some of Jack Hoel’s objections she said, “When Pappy Hoel (Jack’s father) had his idea,” she speculated some people may have “thought that the (rally) was a little crazy and look at where that got us.”

Ward I council candidate Mike Bachand, who said he would attend this “cool event”, contended it would not be an economic boost because racers stay in RVs and don’t eat out. He also believed it was under-budgeted and would end up costing the city more money. “The citizens shouldn’t have to foot the bill….No way, is this going to generate enough sales tax to cover the bills.”

Bohn and Oviatt both stressed that safety was a top priority. The race promoters are also hiring a Black Hawk firm to provide additional safety and security resources. Oviatt explained that prior to the event, race pits will be open to the public, but closed during the races.

Sturgis supercross racer Mike Neel was a strong advocate for the event. “We are not beginning riders,” he told the council, “We are careful and know there are risks.” He maintained supermoto is an extremely popular event that “will bring a crowd. It’s not a generic race. People want to see new types of racing,” he contended. Neel, who races in many states, said he believed the planned safety barriers were adequate and that he’s raced where there were fewer safety measures. He also said the rally would not be the time for this event.

Jackpine Gypsy Roger Schieman said Cycle Hutt had “put the cart before the horse” by advertising the event before city permission was granted. He also claimed the city, private property owners and the public were not adequately covered with the $5 million insurance policy. He said if there was a reason “people will go after those with deep pockets which would be the City of Sturgis and its citizens.” Schieman, who is the property manager for Mr. Al’s, where students build homecoming floats wondered how students would be able to access the building adding this event caused the Sturgis High School to move its homecoming from Sept. 13 to Sept. 20. “I have no problem with the race; it’s where it’s at.”

In response to liability questions, Jeremy Vliem, First Western Insurance agent, said he was working with Lloyd’s of London for coverage. The “A-“ rated company would underwrite a $5 million policy for a period covering two days prior and following the event with the city listed as an additional insured.

Cavalier, who was at the council for another matter, said this was the first he’d known of the event but that his first reaction was “cool”. He liked to know he’d be a part of community that could think outside the box, the manufacturer of hunting and motorcycle clothing said, “I’m part of the riff-raff that has come to the rally for 18 years and I don’t know how you’d wedge another business card down Main Street during the rally…It will be fun.”

Bill Peterson, who lives in the midst of the proposed race course, questioned how he and those at the Sturgis Senior Citizens would access their buildings. He was told there would be temporary barriers in that block which would enable egress/ingress.

Waterland said he recognizes that the city in the past helped finance Jackpine Gypsy oval races but he voted against this approval because he wanted sponsors to pick up more of the costs.

Councilman David Hersrud, who is also a General Motors car dealer, apparently summarized the belief of other councilmembers as they nodded in agreement when he reminded everyone of past financial, equipment and staff support the city has given other endeavors. “The Sturgis Mustang Rally has become a huge success and it looks like the Camaro Rally is going to be going in the same direction. So I take a look at some of these expenses as an investment. Having said that, I know there are some budgetary concerns, and maybe one of the things to do is to talk to people involved. And in the future, as this event becomes more successful, as they get bigger and better with sponsorship, that there could be dollars flow back to the city to compensate the city for our expenses. I think that is a very logical and very appropriate conversation to have,” he went on to say it is something the city should examine when it comes to all events.

Hersrud said initially there was “extreme distress” over the Sturgis Mustang Rally “but, “I believe today you would be hard pressed to find anyone is this community that’s upset with it and what it has provided the people of this community, the people visiting and the sales tax revenue it produces.”

The Camaro rally is June 27-30. The Mustang rally is Aug. 28-Sept. 1.

The council is also considering a lease agreement with Dirt Promotions to use the south end of the fairgrounds for a supercross track. Bohn said they would install a sprinkler system for dust control and have a 94 decibel sound limit on the bikes.
Neel said there is a huge need for such a facility and that area enthusiasts travel out-of-state to use one. A public informational meeting will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 26 at the fairgrounds. The council is expected to vote on the issue Apr. 1.

Bohn said the area where the rodeo is held would remain intact.

VALERIE THOMPSON JOINS TEXAS MILE 200 MPH CLUB–with personal top speed of 212 mph.

Five-Time motorcycle land speed record holder sets new track record during her first appearance at Texas Mile

Valerie Thompson, owner/driver of Valerie Thompson Racing (VTR), set a new 1000 cc class record with a personal best top speed of 212 mph during her first appearance at the Texas Mile race March 22-24 in Beeville Texas. Thompson’s record run also earned her BMW S 1000 RR Superbike entry into the prestigious “Texas Mile 200 MPH Club.”

“What an excellent way to start 2013 for all the great sponsors who made our BMW a real track terror. During the winter months, we really got the bike dialed-in with new HP Race Parts, new riding gear, MS Production race parts and even a new paint scheme from Orlando Autobody. After arriving in Texas, we only needed gear changes to adapt to changing weather conditions. Now we just need some additional funding to race a full season,” stated Thompson.

Texas Mile attendance has grown rapidly since 2003, with participants from around the world competing on one of the world’s most challenging 1-mile track. “My hats off to the Texas Mile staff and Christian Motorcycle Association volunteers who put on a well-managed event. I’d also like to thank my dedicated crew, we can’t wait to return in October for the next Texas Mile competition,” said Thompson.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–California: Anti-Gun Bills Scheduled for Hearings in April Start Contacting your State Legislators in Sacramento

The 2013 California legislative session is underway and committee hearing dates are being set for onerous anti-gun legislation again this year. As usual, anti-gun state legislators still think that passing more gun control laws in addition to the over 900 hundred that are already on the books will reduce California’s violent crime problem.

Apparently, those legislators do not know the definition of criminal. When you call AND e-mail your state legislators, remind them that a criminal by definition does not obey or respect the law and any legislation infringing on gun owners will do nothing to affect criminals or their access to and misuse of firearms. Instead urge your state legislator to focus on meaningful legislation relating to school safety, mental health issues, marketing of violence as entertainment for our children and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.

First, just weeks into this new legislation session Assemblyman Bonta introduced Assembly Bill 174 that would have repealed the “grandfather clause” in the assault weapons laws that allowed Californians to keep the firearms that they registered in compliance with this law. Thanks to the efforts of NRA members who expressed their opposition to this bill, Bonta has gutted and amended all the firearms-related provisions out of AB 174 and has amended it into a public school health bill.

Below is a list of anti-gun bills that are currently scheduled to be heard in the state Senate and Assembly Committees on Public Safety and the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation. More firearm-related legislation will be scheduled for hearings in the near future, check our websites, listed at the bottom of this alert, for the complete list of all firearms-related legislation being considered at the State Capitol.

On Tuesday, April 2 in the state Assembly Committee on Public Safety:

Assembly Bill 48 (Skinner) bans the sale of magazine parts kits that can hold more than 10 cartridges, bans the sale or transfer of ammunition by anyone other than a licensed firearms dealer and all ammunition transfers must be reported to the state.
Assembly Bill 169 (Dickinson) bans the sale of guns no longer on California’s roster of approved handguns. This leaves gun owners who lawfully possess a handgun with no means of transferring or selling the handgun, if the handgun is not on DOJ’s Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.

On Monday, April 15 in the state Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation:

Assembly Bill 760 (Dickinson) imposes a sales tax of .05 cents per ammunition component (complete cartridge, bullet or case).

On Tuesday, April 16 in the state Senate Committee on Public Safety:

Senate Bill 47 (Yee) expands the definition of “Assault Weapons” to BAN the future sale of rifles that have been designed/sold and are equipped to use the “bullet button” or similar device, requires NEW “assault weapon” registration, requires registration of ALL those semi-auto rifles that are currently possessed to retain legal possession in the future, and subjects these firearms to all other “assault weapons” restrictions.
Senate Bill 53 (DeLeon) requires persons to buy an annual ammunition purchase permit, requires the registration and thumbprint of the purchaser for each ammunition purchase, and bans online and mail order sales of ammunition to Californians.
Senate Bill 108 (Yee) requires mandatory locked storage of firearms within a locked house regardless of whether anyone is present.
Senate Bill 293 (DeSaulnier) bans the sale of conventional handguns, if the Department of Justice approves the sale of “Owner Authorized – Smart” handgun technology.
Senate Bill 299 (DeSaulnier) turns victims of firearm theft into criminals for failing to report the loss of their firearm within 48 hours.
Senate Bill 374 (Steinberg) expands the definition of “assault weapons” to BAN the future sale of VIRTUALLY ALL semi-auto rifles (including rimfire cartridges) that accept a detachable magazine, requires NEW “assault weapon” registration, requires registration of ALL those semi-auto rifles that are currently possessed to retain legal possession in the future, and subjects these firearms to all other “assault weapons” restrictions.
Senate Bill 396 (Hancock) bans the possession of any magazine with a capacity to accept more than 10 cartridges, including currently legally possessed “grandfathered” large capacity magazines.
Senate Bill 567 (Jackson) changes the technical definition of a shotgun, which would turn all handguns into short-barrel shotguns that are illegal to own.

Your state Senator and Assemblyman MUST hear from you TODAY urging them to OPPOSE the anti-gun bills listed above. Don’t forget to forward this alert to your family, friends and fellow gun owners throughout California and urge them to do the same. We need all of California gun owners and Second Amendment supports to continually call AND e-mail their state legislators. The California legislature needs to know that this tyranny against law-abiding citizens needs to stop.

You can write your representative here urging them to OPPOSE the anti-gun bills listed above. Please feel free to also copy and paste all the bill information to ensure your state legislators know which bills to OPPOSE.

You can also send a letter to all elected officials in California here. Please feel free to copy and paste all the bill information above to ensure the elected officials of California know which bills to OPPOSE.

You can also find information about anti-gun and pro-gun legislation in California at http://www.calnra.com.

DON’T ASK ME, BUT RICHARD LA PLANTE IS INVOLVED–
You’re probably wondering –
What brings the unlikely team of Terence Stamp, Kevin Godley, Richard La Plante and Greg Penny together to create a project and…
What the hell is an Ear Movie ?
Glad you asked !
The answer is:
We share a profoundly absurd sense of humor and a deep desire to create something exciting and original…
An Ear Movie is a movie WITHOUT pictures !
•Out of the box, left field, something completely different
•Retro in concept and futuristic in design
•A mash-up of a 21st century radio play, an audio book on steroids, an off-the-wall comedy album and an original soundtrack
•To be unleashed upon the world as a multi chapter digital download featuring nearly two hours of voices, music, sound effects and therapy !
Adapted from the best selling book by Richard La Plante, the dark comedy Hog Fever is the story of Robert Lourdes, a man in the throes of midlife crisis, desperately searching for himself from the saddle of his motorcycle.

With your help, we can make Hog Fever – An Ear Movie together ! Like Rock ‘n’ Roll, the magic is between the artists and their audience and the magic of this project could be compromised by the mechanisms of conventional financing. We just wanted to get in and ‘do it’, and Kickstarter provides us with the opportunity to do that. To make Hog Fever – An Ear Movie the wild ride it should be, an audio adventure that hits you right between the ears – with NO compromises – and, gives us direct contact with YOU – our audience !

By backing Hog Fever – An Ear Movie you will help us to pay for studio time, materials, voice talent, musicians, sound effects, mixing and mastering to complete the project. Although our pledge goal of $25,000 is just enough to reach our objective, it is a very small budget for a BIG idea. So, the more money we raise, the cooler the project. If we are able to exceed our goal, we can spend more time and energy on both Hog Fever – An Ear Movie and the accompanying soundtrack – and give you the whole Hog !

Please check out our cool rewards and thanks for your generous backing !

Great Movies, and a couple I have missed.
There was one movie I thought could be included:

The Pace That Thrills.

It is a classic!!!

BIKERNET BAD COP FILES–PENNSYLVANIA City cleared in cop road rage attack. The city of Pittsburgh was spared Monday from paying damages on behalf of its former police chief and a commander over a road rage incident in which a man says he was attacked by a detective with a history of complaints who was later fired.

Detective Bradley Walker has already been convicted of pulling a gun, breaking the windows of the car of Jarret Fate and choking him during an off-duty accident in 2010.The jury was asked to decide only whether Walker was acting as a city officer even though he was off duty when the accident and attack happened and, if so, whether the city and his superiors were responsible because of their allegedly lax oversight given Walker’s history.

ASK ANYONE TO LET ME RIDE — I THINK NOT!!!!

My comment was: If your significant others says it is either me or that motorcycle.

Your Answer Without Hesitation should be — Do Not Let The Door Hit You In The Ass On The Way Out.

I thought you might enjoy this LOL
Of course this is for Motorbike Riders and Not BIKERS. Motorcyclist fit somewhere in between the two.

WOW, ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE—I was hit with the notorious mung Tuesday night after I visited a dental office. I blamed it on the one of the other patients as I hit the sack riddled with fever and body aches. It’s strange. When you’re sick you are suddenly void of deadlines and project pressures. By the next morning I fought between being sick and being a responsible, hardworking, never-say-die human being. Besides the dogs needed their morning bones, and Claude, the Bikernet African Macaw would shake the perimeter walls screeching, if I didn’t take him outside. I had no choice, but to drag my sickie ass out of bed and make something happen.

By the evening I posted two new features and was looking down the barrel of four more. I had just fired my Mudflap Girl FXR and needed to go for a ride, except I was sick. What the hell. I had to get well, the News hung over my head. We had bikes to finish, girls to see, and more projects coming.

Have a helluva weekend,
