Hey,
It’s Sunday, the weather’s warmer and I fired up and rode the Salt Shaker for the first time since Bonneville. It’s still light and fast thanks to Berry Wardlaw of Accurate Engineering. Now the lift is free to begin work on the Assalt Weapan, or a FXR project we have in the wings. I have a ’98 Dyna and we may have the engine rebuilt by H-Ds re-man or the mad Dewey Jelen lost in the New Mexico desert.

Let’s get to the news. It’s a harried day and I wish I could tell you some of the shit, but generally it’s all good. I’m storing up a couple of stories that will blow your mind. Let’s hit the news:

BIKERNET BANK ROBBER FIRED– A thief burst into the bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, “FREEZE, MOTHER-STICKERS, THIS IS A F—- UP!” For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing. It probably saved his life, because he’d been about to draw his gun. He couldn’t have drawn and fired before the thief got him. The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the bank later put a plaque on the wall engraved “Freeze, mother-stickers, this is a f—- up!

MONTANA HELMET BILL TABLED– Had a great hearing on the Helmet bill in House Judiciary yesterday. A sea of black leather showed up to oppose the bill and the committee promptly tabled the bill unanimously.

REALLY good news today. HB 534 was tabled in Committee with a vote of 15-2. The only way that this bill can be resurrected from the dead is if someone brings it up again before next Friday, the 23rd, which is transmittal day, and everything from one house has to be sent to the other by that day.
SO SO MANY THANKS to all of you who made a phone call, sent a letter or an e-mail, or showed up this morning to testify or just a show of support. YOU made this happen!!!!!!
Reach around and pat yourselves on the back if you were involved in any way.
And thank any and all persons that YOU got involved.
Special thanks to all that traveled to make their testimony, Lee, Randy & Linda, AL, me and any others I may have missed.
REALLY REALLY HUGE thanks to the Helena Chapter for showing up!!!!!

SHRINER’S RIDE FOR KIDS– My name is Mike Ozee and I belong to the El-Zaribah Shriner’s in Phoenix, AZ. I am also a member of the motorcycle unit here at the temple, which rides in the various parades in AZ to increase awareness of the benefits of the shrine. Our unit is having our second annual benefit run on November 3rd called Shriner’s Ride for Kids and our motto is “We Ride so Kids can Walk”. We had our first run in Nov of 2006 and we had over 300 riders attend the ride. This is a charitable fundraiser and the motorcycle unit was able to donate over $55,000 to the Shrine Transportation Fund from this event. Tickets were $10 and the grand prize was either a 2007 HD Fatboy or $15,000 in cash.
Please note that the El Zaribah Shrine Children’s Transportation fund is a 501c3 Charity. This fund is used to pay the transportation costs for the children and a parent or guardian to and from one of our 22 Hospitals located throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The local Shrine spends over $150,000 annually to support the kid’s transportation needs. These services are provided at no charge to any child in need of our medical services.

After a minute or two, the man got up, straightened himself up and said to the bartender, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know this was Hillary country.” “It’s not!” replied the bartender. “This is horse country”. –from Art Friedman CUSTOM CHROME CONTINUES TO EVOLVE AND DRIVE GROWTH– As Custom Chrome continues towards its goal of regaining aftermarket leadership position, organizational and operational changes deliver results. Morgan Hill, CA- coming off a very successful weekend at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati where Custom Chrome debuted its all new 2007 catalog, introduced several new key hires including the promotion of industry veteran Ed Martin, Custom Chrome is still not slowing down proving that gaining back industry leading share is the focus in 2007 and beyond. “As we drive toward our goal of providing industry leading aftermarket parts for Harley-Davidson motorcycles we continue to exam our core competencies and area’s of expertise” explained Custom Chrome President, Holger Mohr. “We have built our company on brands like RevTech, Santee and most recently Jammer. We are good at designing, sourcing and distributing innovative parts and accessories for our dealers. With that said, we have made a strategic decision to close our Valencia facility” said Mohr. The Santee brand is manufactured at the Valencia facility. Santee and its legacy are important elements of the Custom Chrome product portfolio and will continue to be. “Custom Chrome can better serve its dealers needs by working with outsourced manufacturing partners to produce Santee products” added Mohr. In anticipation of the transition, Custom Chrome has begun to work with partners to expand the Santee line under the new outsourcing structure. Custom Chrome will invest in research and development for future Santee product launches. With 2007 barely underway, Custom Chrome has continued forging forward with aggressive, strategic change all of which allows the brand the ability to refocus both its human and financial resources toward powerful growth initiatives. Fellow Freedom Fighters,– We must not allow ourselves to make the mistake of confusing the utility of helmets with the futility of helmet laws. And if we are to assert and defend our rights as American motorcyclists, we must NOT allow our federal, state or local governments to continue making that mistake either! ABATE and BOLT of Nevada are asking concerned riders everywhere to EMAIL, CALL and FAX Nevada State Senator Dennis Nolan, requesting that he SUPPORT AND VOTE FOR SB49, a bill that will MAKE NEVADA A FREE STATE by removing “… the requirement that drivers and passengers on certain motorcycles wear protective headgear.” Here is his contact information: Dennis Nolan, Senator More information about Senator Nolan and the other members of his committee is available here: –from Rogue FLATHEAD PROGRESS REPORT COMING TO BIKERNET– I stopped by the shop today to take some photos of the really cool flathead custom that we talked about. AUSTRALIAN GUN LAW UPDATE– Here’s a thought to warm some of your hearts… From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in “successfully ridding Australian society of guns.” You won’t see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it’s too late! TIRE QUESTION OF THE WEEK–My name is Randy, as a member Id like to ask ya somethin, the Metzler tires were supposed to be a stronger compound but Im a roll on redliner quite a bit on my modified 96FXstc when I can get out between monsoons in s.e.tx…I have the solid stock rear wheel and the chrome wide tire H-D kit w/150 on it, belt driven, IS there a premium car tire that will fit for the similar premium damn price, and any side to side mods associated with it, thanks – –Lidia Johnson FREEDOMS FIGHTERS’ SUCCESS– We won one in Arkansas and WON in Montana this week and we have one “Laid Over” in Colorado, but we still have at least two pieces of helmet law legislation on back burners in two states. Oklahoma HB1539 would put a lid on evey biker, and it’s still in committee. Kansas HB2137 would put a helmet on every biker and it’s in Transportation committee. There are plenty of Safety Nannies out there who would like nothing better than to slap a helmet law on each of us. So let’s ALL keep an eye on these bills, eh. –ED BIRCH –from Rogue INDIAN RESTORATION QUESTION OF THE WEEK– I was looking at your custom Indian beautiful really beautiful myself I have a 2001 Scout and working on my third rear finder cracks everywhere I recently found out my bike I bought new did not come with what is called”A cross over section” thats the piece that connects the two rear struts together problem is I cannot find one anywher do you possibily know who has one for sale or is there something I can do like weld something into the rear finder to stop the cracking ???? –Tom Ryall WOMAN RIDER NOW COLUMNIST TO CLIMB MT. EVEREST– February 13, 2006 — (Livingston, MT) “This is an incredible opportunity of a lifetime, one I’ve trained for my entire life,” says Betsy. A longtime southern California resident, Betsy has been riding a motorcycle for more than 20 years and is a fixture on the Harley-Davidson scene in and around the Los Angeles area. In 1997, Betsy climbed Thorong Peak and Chulu Far East, two 20,000-foot mountains in the Annapurna Range of the Himalayas. One of her dreams has been to summit Mount Everest. Now, she’ll have her chance. To make her dream a reality, Betsy must first meet another challenge, raising $42,000 plus another $20,000 in expenses. That’s the price tag for one man or woman to reach the top of the tallest mountain on earth. Betsy has set up a Web site at LOOKING FOR A JOB STATESIDE–My name is Alex. We search far and wide to bring you all the sharp-edged news about the Custom World that’s fit to print. Don’t hesitate to send me news items. There’s no charge to be featured in the news. If you have info, tech tips, a project to share, a new tattoo or a hot girlfriend, we’ll feature whatever it is. Tell us about your latest ride adventure, ask a question. We’ll get to the bottom of any custom problem and highlight any success. Just send it to Bandit@Bikernet.com. So what’s next for Bikernet? I’m wrapping up a chunk of fiction and working with a local lovely editor. She’s going to help me edit my next book. Next week, if all goes well, we’ll publish an article on how Saxon motorcycles builds their bikes. John Bishop runs the assembly line and came to Saxon with auto-maker experience. This story will deliver insider insight into building production choppers. I also hope to deliver a feature on one of the rarest Crocker Motorcycles on the planet. It’s painted Booze Fighter colors and was owned and restored by one of the original members. The good news this week was that Paughco is now building our Assalt Weapan frame. It should be in hand in three weeks. We’re burnin’ daylight and I’m anxious as a kid in his last class on a Friday before a holiday weekend. Get this. We are now owners of a sailing vessel. For years I sailed with a gentleman Wolf Chater. He’s now 86 and unable to sail. The company he worked for (25 years) gave him the boat when he retired. When he could no longer use it, he attempted to sell it and it was severely abused. Then his son John attempted to restore the Alden 32 built by Cheoy Lee. Wolf called, and we put together a biker crew to restore the sloop built in 1969. Now you’ll see reports on it as we move forward. We’re moving it to a safer, Wilmington mooring this morning. It needs a new Perkins engine and a handful of repairs, before we can set sail on our first Bandit’s Cantina Harbor Cruise. I know, we’re nuts. Hang on. Ride Forever, –Bandit
