Hey,
This is a heady news. Lotsa stuff happening in the industry. See the blonde. I’m sure you didn’t miss her. I wrote a chunk of fiction on my boring flight to Minneapolis, then Cincy. I finished it on the way back. It’s based on a blonde love affair, then a Bikernet reader sent these shots. She fits this romance to a T. We’ll try to launch it tomorrow. You won’t want to miss “White Line Blues.” Let’s get to the news, we’ve got a busy day ahead.

It looks like the decisions makers at the top have decided to selling all their enthusiast magazines so they can focus on their more popular and profitable apartment guides and such. I believe all their motorcycle magazines, including Motorcyclist, Hot Bike, Motorcycle Cruiser, Street Chopper, BikeWorks and some dirt titles, are all included in this deal. Don’t you wonder who would be interested in and able to buy their “more than “70 publications and 90 web sites”? –Buzz Kanter Primedia Inc. (PRM), which has been shedding some businesses to focus on core operations, said Friday that its board of directors has authorized the company to explore the sale of its Enthusiast Media segment. The New York media company said it has retained Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (LEH) to manage the exploration of a potential sale. Enthusiast Media is a leading special interest magazine publisher, with more than 70 publications and 90 Web sites. Some of its best-known assets include Motor Trend, Automobile, Hot Rod, Automotive.com, Power and Motoryacht and Surfer. The publisher had revenue exceeding $500 million in 2006, excluding the recently divested Outdoors Group. Dean Nelson, chairman, president and CEO of Primedia, said, “The Board believes the market environment is extremely favorable for the sale of PEM,” or the Enthusiast Media segment. He said the company has spent considerable time reviewing strategic options for the company and has been exploring a possible spinoff of the Consumer Source division, “creating two distinct publicly traded companies.” Nelson said Primedia has obtained a favorable IRS ruling and virtually completed complying with the Securities and Exchange Commission regulations. ” Therefore, spinning off the Consumer Source business remains an option,” he said. The Consumer Source unit produces free publications, such as Apartment Guide and Auto Guide. Primedia has sold off a number of its other magazines in recent years, including New York, American Baby, Chicago and Modern Bride. In December, it agreed to sell its hunting, fishing and outdoor titles, including Guns & Ammo and Game & Fish, to private-equity firm InterMedia Partners LP for $170 million in cash. The investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. owns about 60% of Primedia. BIKERNET COMPLAINT–Bikernet rules! But wife does not like it much. she says I spend all time there. Till then I’ll be riding!!! — Eric Fertig USO TOUR UPDATE– Just wanted to give you a quick update on our USO tour effort, Sponsored by Bikernet.com, we’re trying to get going. To date, only yourself, Brian Klock and Harold Pontarelli have had the courtesy to respond to our numerous invitation attempts. All others have either ignored our invitation or maybe feel they have something better to do. Too bad, our troops deserve better. We’ve been busy with correspondence with possible and newly signed sponsors for our Bonneville bagger effort. To date we have Daytec, BDL, Avon Tires, Bel Ray Racing, Spyke, DNA Specialty, Corbin and Hacker Pipes on board with products for this project. We’re still seeking sponsors for other parts and support for this effort and hopefully will be able to secure more support in the coming weeks. The latest project was to get the gas tank done and mounted to the frame. The mounts have been fabricated and welded to the frame so we now have a gas tank in place. The next step will be mounting the front end to fit for fork stops and also mount the steering damper as required by the rule book. We hope to have those done shortly so we can get the frame, swingarm and some other pieces off to the powdercoaters. –California Customs THE SEMINOLE HARD ROCK ROADHOUSE 2007 TOUR– FT LAUDERDALE, FL (February 1, 2007) – Showcasing the rides of various celebrities the 2007 Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse Tour is making waves with the new tour and gearing up for another exciting year. This one brought back some memories of when I racing sidecars. Photo was taken about 40 years ago at the Snetterton road race circuit in England, I was the rider, Dave Houghton was passenger, bike was a 1000cc ETY Vincent, tuned by Ray Elger. I had a big pair of balls those days and if they were joined to my brain, my racing career would not have been so short spectacular and painful John Reed ARTICLE RESPONSE FROM THE OWNERS: I also notice that it says “Bikers greasy spoon since 1938” – I would ask that this information is deleted, as it is not the case and is VERY misleading. It’s just a cliched headline grabber! When the cafe opened in 1938, it was a transport cafe that catered for hauliers and truck drivers using the new arterial road network. It was not only a cafe, but also had a restaurant section with table cloths, and also made it’s own bread and cakes. It was then a state-of-the art cafe/restaurant! In the ’50s and ’60s, it became the ‘home’ to the Ton Up Boys and then the Rockers, and yes, it did go downhill after that, as society changed and the owner retired, so it closed in 1969. We have reopened it as a light and airy 21st century cafe/restaurant/music venue, that holds many events, A lot of these events are also car events , and we are by no means a ‘greasy spoon’ cafe! I trust that you understand this and my request to delete the words ‘bikers greasy spoon since 1938’. LINDA WILSMORE Check the Ace Caf? Story In the Cantina History Section-Bandit. CAR PEOPLE SCREWING WITH THE WORLD– If you haven’t noticed recently, we’re actually running out of room to put and drive cars here in LA. I read somewhere that the average speed we can travel anywhere here now is only 19 miles an hour. Another study showed that besides all the toxins being spewed into our air – we are actually spending more time in our cars (about a month every year) and that we are getting fatter faster – because of our cars. Literally, our cars are killing us. Certain streets are also now major impediments to “smart and sustainable growth”. It’s time we STOP planning for more and more cars and begin planning more for more feet. We must now start getting RID of cars and the streets that use them – at every chance we can. We can start first in San Pedro. I have a plan. –by Dick Pawlowski CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURSES BOARD RESPONDS TO VANCE AND HINES–Dear Vance & Hines Dealers: We are very excited to relay that we have just received the following response from the California Environmental Protection Agency (CARB) regarding Vance & Hines exhaust systems for 2007 model Harley-Davidson motorcycles. We realize there has been much confusion regarding the emissions legality of installing Vance & Hines systems on non catalytic converter Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This CARB response letter eliminates concern for dealers installing these specified systems with regard to anti tampering and emissions. An American tourist in London decides to skip his tour group and explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the sights, and occasionally stopping at a quaint pub to soak up the local culture, chat with the lads, and have a pint of Guinness. After awhile, he finds himself in a very high class neighborhood…..big, stately residences … no pubs, no stores, no restaurants, and worst of all…NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. He really, really has to go, after all those Guinness’s. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem. As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London bobby, who says, “I say, sir, you simply cannot do that here, you know.” “I’m very sorry, officer,” replies the American, “but I really, really HAVE TO GO, and I just can’t find a public restroom.” “Ah, yes,” said the bobby…”Just follow me.” He leads him to a back “delivery alley,” then along a wall to a gate, which he opens. “In there,” points the bobby. “Whiz away sir, anywhere you want.” The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statuary, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom. Since he has the cop’s blessing, he unburdens himself and is greatly relieved. As he goes back through the gate, he says to the bobby, “That was really decent of you … is that what you call English Hospitality?” “No, sir” replies the bobby, “that is what we call the French Embassy.” –from Mothergoose BANDIT INTERVIEWED IN CINCY– Your interview from Cincy is on Bikers Inner Circle. –Rogue CALIFORNIA HARLEY-DAVIDSON CLOSED MONDAY FOR INVENTORY– Once a year it has to be done. The group, led by Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda, Ramsey Clark and their ilk, plan to gather March 17 at the Vietnam Memorial Wall to begin a march to protest America’s involvement in the Iraq war. The date marks the fourth anniversary of the war’s beginning. This time, however, protestors will see objectors if they spit on Iraqi veterans again, or throw paint on a war memorial. This time, they will encounter a buzz saw of Vietnam veterans and supporters who will gather to protect the Wall, and show their support for U.S. troops. The counter-protestors are calling themselves the Gathering of Eagles. “? An eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks. The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.” An unknown author wrote that description, but it describes how the veterans see their mission. They are angry that the Wall is being used as a jumping off point for a political protest and they are gathering to protect it from another storm of anti-war activists. “The anti-war/anti-America group cannot be allowed to use the Vietnam Memorial Wall as a back-drop to their anti-America venom and stain the hallowed ground that virtually cries out with blood at the thought of this proposed desecration … it must not happen,” said veteran Bud Gross. “? All Americans are invited to support our effort, which is intended as a defender of hallowed ground and intended as a non-violent competition between those that would sell out America and those of us who support freedom and keeping the fight with the enemy on distant shores.” The group defending the Wall will be wearing armbands to identify themselves. Those who are unable to stand with the defenders are being asked to wear armbands with small U.S. flags to show their own communities that they abhor the Fonda-Sheehan tactics. “We’ll be there to act as a countervailing force against the Cindy Sheehan-Jane Fonda march from the Vietnam Memorial to the Pentagon,” retired Navy Capt. Larry Bailey said. “We will protect the Vietnam Memorial. If they try to deface it, there will be some violence, I guarantee you.” Bailey and thousands of his fellow Vietnam vets are worried that the anti-war protesters will damage the wall, just as they spray-painted the steps of the Capitol at their last march. The wall is sacred to the men and women who fought in that war. “It is our contact with our dead brothers — those who lost their lives in the cause of their country,” Bailey said. And so it is that Washington will see a Gathering of Eagles – Americans determined to stand up against leftist propagandists who denigrate U.S. troops and the mission for which they sometimes sacrifice their lives. Retired Col. Harry Riley organized the Gathering of Eagles. Organizers hope thousands will show up in Washington from as far away as Hawaii, and they won’t only be Vietnam veterans. Families, friends and veterans of other wars, including Iraq, and soldiers still on active duty, will be there to defend the Wall. “When we say a gathering of eagles, that signifies people who support the American way,” Bailey said. For an exchange of information, visit and join the Gathering of Eagles message board. In addition to hiring Amenda, Custom Chrome announced that it has hired a new Outside Sales Manger for the West Coast, Walter Clark, and added 3 new Outside Sales Representatives. Asked about the recent additions to the commercial side of the company Mohr claimed, “It’s simple; we’re going to grow this business in ’07”. MYRTLE BEACH SUGAR DADDY WANTED– Swannanoa, NC- After 66 years of bringing the rally to life, the founders, Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association (CHDDA) plan big changes in 2007 including adding a car show to the mix. “In the past, most people come to the convention center for the smokin’ deals at our Factory Sale” explained CHDDA President, Gene Lummus. “The deals will be better than ever on Harley merchandise at the Sugar Shack, plus we will provide a destination for riders. The Shack has it all; bar with the hottest staff for miles, top tier vendors displaying and selling their product on site, Harley-Davidson demo rides, custom car show and more, we now are offering a cool place to visit during the rally, not just a sale” finished Lummus. The Sugar Shack takes over the Myrtle Beach convention center on Oak Street on May 15 through the 19th. The convention center will forever be known as the Sugar Shack beginning this rally. The Shack is just a mile away from Broadway at the Beach; the Shack will be rockin’ during the entire rally. Enthusiasts can still expect great deals on new HD merchandise at the Sugar Shack during the rally, but they can also expect the unexpected; a Kendall Johnson custom CAR and bike, custom rat rods from Paul Cox and Billy Lane to Brian Klock’s Cadzilla plus live music. Rally attendees are encouraged to pre-register their attendance at the Shack. In appreciation for their registration they will receive a Raising Cane book filled with freebies ranging from a free, ice cold beer to free apparel and more. That amount is deducted from the costs if the parts are purchased at SBW. Problem solved. Let the punks have you look up the part numbers. Another solution is to never use anyone else’s part number in your system. Convert all part numbers to a SBW part number in the PC database. Then you can have all available sources of parts tied to the SBW part number and always use the vendor that’s giving you the best service or price. Sure, you’ll then be happy to give mister punk the part numbers and prices! Just try to buy them somewhere else. Ya, you do have to set it up but only the first time you enter a new part in your system. I like this solution better, and every electronics company I’ve ever worked for does this. It allows the multiple vendor part numbers to all drop to just one internal part number. It works. –Rebel FREE RAMOS AND COMPEAN– Nacho Ramos is Locked up in a Mississippi Prison– ON FALSE CHARGES. METZELER SECOND ANNUAL ROUNDTABLE BREAKFAST A HUGH SUCCESS– Cincinnati, OHIO February 9, 2007-Metzeler hosted its 2nd annual roundtable breakfast at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, inviting top industry professionals to discuss the direction the custom motorcycle industry is taking and their views on topical subjects. Metzeler also used the forum to announce and debut its new ME880 24-inch tire.
The roundtable discussed the apparent shift in custom motorcycle sales over the last several years, discovering that one reason is the glut of builders spurred by the advent of bike building on T.V., and the fact that many builders without any professional training were designing and building low quality and unsafe bikes, a problem that led to motorcycle buyers turning to larger manufacturers for reliability.
This was punctuated by roundtable panelist Ron Salisbury from Orange County Choppers, who said “OCC has gained popularity through T.V., which is purely an entertainment medium for us, but we also have a reputation for always putting out innovative products that showcase our commitment to industry standards and quality.” Also, the existence of companies like Metzeler and Drag Specialties allow motorcycle owners to fully customize their manufactured bikes with custom tires and parts, without sacrificing reliability.
Panel members this year also included Eddie Trotta, Keino of Indian Larry legacy, Michael Lichter, Tom Motzko of Drag Specialties, Louis Ontiberoz of the IMBA and Chris Wall of Metzeler. Eddie Trotta discussed his own success, attributing it to his innovation, like the fact he used Metzeler’s new 21-inch tire as a platform for new builds this past year. He also reaffirmed the industry downturn by telling the panel that even though he is doing very well, he has been down in sales from previous years. “We are still steady, but not ten deep like we used to be. Part of the reason we are still successful is our commitment to innovation. I try to stay ahead of the industry.”
