This is a quicky life-saving tech. One company makes wheel spacer kits. If you don’t have a lathe or one next door, you’re fucked when setting up new wheels or a new bike project.
I’ve gone through this for decades, digging around a garage for any spacer that might fit. Or worse, we find some tubing and cut a funky spacer with a hacksaw, then try to make it square on grinding wheels. It’s critical that wheel spacers are square or flat on the ends. It’s also critical in some applications that they are the correct outside diameter so wheel seals, seal.
Doherty started making these kits a few years back and now they offer them in two sizes, ¾-inch and 1-inch inside diameter. I save wheel spacers off other bikes and from other application like they’re gold ingots. It’s critical to center your wheels in most applications. It’s also critical that calipers are centered over rotors and in each case wheel spacers are the key to operational brakes and motorcycle alignment.
So you’ve got a choice, start collecting wheel spacers at swapmeets, buy a lathe (you need one anyway) or save up the coin for one of these kits. Doherty also sells spacer packs, if you want to start on the cheap, or to keep your kit in full working order.
