Coalitions Rejuvenated
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) 2023 legislative agenda includes a diverse set of issues that strike at the core of who we are as bikers.
Historically, the MRF has fought many battles to defend individuals and the aftermarket motorcycle businesses’ rights to customize and repair motorcycles. Our successful defense against the EPA’s “Color and Chrome” only initiative and the regulations/enforcement related to it helped define the MRF and what we stand for to this day.
The MRF has long supported the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act (RPM Act), which would ensure that modifying motor vehicles into racing vehicles used for competition would not violate the Clean Air Act. We anticipate an updated version of the RPM Act will be introduced this Spring. The MRF and our partners will work diligently for passage of this commonsense piece of legislation. Importantly, some of these parts and technology we are looking to protect are used in the EPA allowances for one-per-lifetime custom bikes and Tier 1 eligible motorcycles we fought for two decades ago.
The MRF agenda also strongly supports the desire to protect a consumer’s right to repair, and ownership of data related to their vehicles. A recently introduced bill, H.R. 906 The Repair Act, helps protect consumers ability to utilize independent repair shops and aftermarket parts to work on vehicles, including motorcycles.
These issues are becoming increasingly important and drawing the attention of the aftermarket industry and bike customizers. The EPA has restarted a campaign of increased enforcement and it is threatening shops and individuals with legal action.
MRF President Kirk “Hardtail” Willard recently appeared on Cycle Source Magazines “Shop Talk” radio show to discuss these issues and this week traveled to Daytona Bike Week to join independent motorcycle shop owners and others in the aftermarket industry to discuss the many issues facing this industry. The meeting was hosted by Chris Cullen of Cycle Source Magazine and moderated by industry icon Bob Kay. Hardtail had this to say about the meeting, “It was encouraging to see both the level of concern and willingness in this group to engage in our efforts and educate other players in the aftermarket industry.”
The MRF won’t tackle these challenges alone, we are aggressively looking to put back together our coalition that was so effective in past battles. In the past the coalition included, the aftermarket industry, media and print publications, other custom vehicle organizations, and other motorcyclists’ rights groups. Lastly, our Master Mechanic and technical expert Dave “Dad” Dwyer is looking to schedule a meeting with the EPA in Detroit to discuss our growing concerns.
These are challenging issues, but with your continued support and the help of other like-minded advocates we will fight to defend the rights and freedoms we cherish.

MOTORCYCLISTS LEAD ATTACK ON TORT REFORM––
In a rare display of muscle both political and physical, angry motorcyclists have crammed hearings at the Florida Capitol demanding changes to fast-moving legislation they fear will blunt their chances of suing when injured in an accident.
Many in the crowd wore ‘Bikers over Billionaires’ T-shirts, mocking Gov. Ron DeSantis’ own ‘Don’t Tread on Florida’ campaign shirts. They’ve been calling out the governor, who they accuse of caving in to insurance companies and other big donors by supporting the legislation.
The tort reform push (HB 837), a priority of DeSantis and House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, is set to go before the full House Thursday. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved its version (SB 236) of the measure Tuesday night.

1928 Moto Guzzi
This week, let’s take a look at the 1928 Moto Guzzi, one of a few very fine Italian motorcycles on display at the National Motorcycle Museum. With the last day the doors are open to the public being September 4, 2023, we hope you will plan a visit and view this beautiful machine along with hundreds of other motorcycles from about 1905 forward.
Red seems to be the motor-color of Italy, a favorite color of Moto Guzzi and Ducati, certainly Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. So, in striking red we bring you this nearly 90 year old design from Moto Guzzi, the famed Italian motorcycle company which was formed in 1921.
Exposed flywheels, distinctive horizontal cylinder overhead valve engines and innovative suspension systems set Moto Guzzi apart from other manufacturers. Even today, Moto Guzzi’s V-Twin engine layout, with crankshaft in-line, is distinctive among motorcycle manufacturers.
Giorgio Parodi and Carlo Guzzi, World War I veterans and mechanics, formed Moto Guzzi in 1921. Most single cylinder engines of the time used a side valve vertical cylinder, or were side-valve v-twins. Moto Guzzi’s designs were an unusual horizontal cylinder with exposed overhead valve layout often incorporating “hairspring” valve springs. Also unusual was their design which put a large flywheel on the outside of the engine, which after a time earned the motorcycles the “bologna slicer” or “bacon slicer” nickname. Moto Guzzi introduced its first rear suspension system in 1928, and early on used what we now call “upside down forks” on later models.
As with most auto and motorcycle innovators, Moto Guzzi almost immediately began designing, building and competing with racing motorcycles as a form of advertising. Winning and placing well in numerous races, over time they took eight Gran Prix championships and won 11 Isle of Man races, along the way developing a V8 grand prix engine! Also thinking of the broader needs of their countrymen, much like Cushman they innovated three wheel trucks which worked well in the tight quarters of old Italian cities and in factory compounds.

Schwarzenegger gets up by six. He makes coffee, putters around, feeds Whiskey (his miniature horse) and Lulu (his miniature donkey), shovels their overnight manure into a barrel, drinks his coffee, checks his email, and maybe plays a quick game of chess online.
At 7:40, he puts a bike on the back of a Suburban and heads from his Brentwood, California, mansion to the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. From there he sets out on the three-mile bike ride to Gold’s Gym, where he has been lifting on and off since the late ’60s.
The bike ride is his favorite part of the morning. It is also, I learned while following behind him on that foggy day in October, a terrifying expedition.
Schwarzenegger does not wear a helmet and seems to enjoy being recognized, startling commuters with drive-by cameos.
He describes his ride as a kind of vigorous nostalgia trip, a time when the former Mr. Universe, Terminator, Barbarian, Governor of California, etc.—one of the strangest and most potent alloys of American celebrity ever forged—can reconnect with something in the neighborhood of a pedestrian existence.

Rispoli and Gillim Fill Out an All-H-D Podium; Rispoli Wins Race 1, Leads Championship
Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kyle Wyman scored a dominating win and topped an all-Harley-Davidson podium in the MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers race on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. Wyman led the entire eight-lap race on the team’s race-prepared Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited motorcycle, crossing the finish line 8.03 seconds ahead of Vance & Hines/Mission Harley-Davidson teammates James Rispoli and Hayden Gillim. Team Saddlemen teammates Cory West and Jake Lewis finished fourth and fifth to complete a top five sweep of the race for Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycles.
“I’m so excited that we got our Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle working so well today,” said Wyman. “This is my first win at Daytona since 2019, and this is such a special place, so a victory here is always special. We had a tough day yesterday, but the entire team just dug in and we had smooth sailing today. You can think of so many scenarios that could happen going into this weekend, but you could not predict either one of these days. It’s a nice way to end the weekend at Daytona. I’m ready to take this momentum to Atlanta.”
After two of 14 rounds in the 2023 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers series, Vance & Hines racer Rispoli leads the championship with 45 points, followed his teammate Gillim with 36 points. Team Saddlemen Harley-Davidson rider Cory West sits third with 26 points, and Harley-Davidson factory rider Kyle Wyman is in fourth place with 25 points. Team Saddlemen’s Jake Lewis is tied for fifth with Factory Indian racer Tyler O’Hara with 21 points.

“You should be ashamed of yourself young man! Drinking is a Sin! Alcohol is the blood of the devil!”
Now John gets pretty annoyed about this, and goes on the offensive.
“How do you know this, Sister?”
“My Mother Superior told me so.”
“But have you ever had a drink yourself? How can you be sure that what you are saying is right?”
“Don’t be ridiculous–of course I have never taken alcohol myself”
“Then let me buy you a drink – if you still believe afterwards that it is evil I will give up drink for life”
“How could I, a Nun, sit outside this public house drinking?!”
“I’ll get the barman to put it in a teacup for you, then no one will ever know.”
The Nun reluctantly agrees, so John goes inside to the bar.
“Another pint for me, and a triple vodka on the rocks”, then he lowers his voice and says to the barman “and could you put the vodka in a teacup?”

DIRECT FROM GREASY KULTURE–We love ‘The Loveless’ so much we wrote a book about it
I first saw ‘The Loveless’ shortly after it came out in London in the early 1980s. The promise of a B-movie about a ’50s bike gang tearing up a tiny southern town en-route from Detroit to Daytona, with a soundtrack by Robert Gordon, was just too good to resist.
And it didn’t disappoint: Harley captains’ hats, leather jackets, greasy pompadours, Panheads, hep-talk, flick-knives, engineer boots and some superb ’50s-hued production design made it an instant classic for me.
Fast forward 40 years and with a collection of Loveless memorabilia on my shelves – from posters to cinema cards, VHS tapes to the original soundtrack album – I got talking to Jeanette Montgomery Barron who was the stills photographer on the original Loveless set. She introduced me to Monty Montgomery, her brother and the co-director and writer of the film, and the idea for a book was born.
I’d always wondered why and how the film was made, what the inspiration for it was, how Willem Dafoe was chosen to play the main role and how Monty co-directed with Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow. After some fascinating talks with Monty, all my fan-boy questions were answered!
With the addition of some amazingly candid images from Jeanette’s archive, plus stills from the movie courtesy of Arrow Films, the book was quickly moving from concept to reality.
If you’ve seen the film you’ll know how much of the dialogue has become cultishly quotable: “Been out of storage about a year now and to me this endless blacktop is my sweet eternity”, drawls gang leader Vance (Willem Dafoe) at the beginning of the film, musing on his transition from jail cell to the saddle of his Panhead. “I knew I was going to hell in a bread basket!”
Later on as Davis (Robert Gordon) and Sportster Debbie (Tina L’Hotsky) stop for directions, Davis shouts “It don’t matter which way I’m comin’ from, it’s which way I’m goin’ to!”

Last weekend in the USA during the Daytona Bike Week, the New York-Rzeszów 2 motorcycle built by the Polish company Game Over Cycles took first place in the ’Chopper/Bobber’ category in the Bike Show Mafia custom bike competition.
The event was held in Florida as part of 2023 Daytona Bike Week, one of the largest motorcycle events in the world, which annually gathers about 500 000 people. The machine from Poland won one more award at the rally.
In another contest, Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show, the same bike took 3rd place in the “Over 1000 cc Custom” category. Rats Hole is a very prestigious and the longest (since 1952) organized custom bike show in the world.
The New York-Rzeszów 2 motorcycle is a specially modified Harley-Davidson Street Bob, adorned with impressive gold and unique brass elements. The construction includes many handcrafted elements.
The vehicle is also decorated with a custom leather seat and painting made in the pinstriping technique. It is a sister motorcycle of the New York – Rzeszów bike.
The New York – Rzeszów motorcycle, as it is fully named, is an extraordinary custom Harley-Davidson inspired by New York and Polish city of Rzeszów. This is manifested in the unique design of the motorcycle, which contains characteristics of the architecture of given city. These parts are not only elements of ornamentation but also fully functional components of the motorcycle.
The main elements of the construction containing the architecture of given city include wheels with Manhattan buildings engraved in metal, exhaust pipe looking like the famous Chrysler Building, front plow in the shape of old WTC ruins with the “9/11 Never Forget” inscription or seat in the form of the Tadeusz Mazowiecki bridge – the largest bridge in the city of Rzeszów.
The New York-Rzeszów motorcycle was also awarded at the Daytona Bike Week. In 2020, the machine took first place in the “Over 1000 cc Custom” category at the event’s most prestigious competition, the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show. “Making of” video presenting how the bike was constructed can be watched here:

For anyone who’s ever seen someone riding down the highway on a motorcycle and thought ‘that looks fun!’, the next thoughts are most likely very daunting. How do I learn to ride? How much is a motorcycle? Which bike is right for me? What would I even do with it after I buy one?
Well, getting in the saddle is a lot easier than you might think! A smart way to explore motorcycle ownership and to know for sure which bike will make you the happiest, is through renting. Not to mention, it’s also a fantastic way to experience adventure and free yourself from the confines of everyday life.
The road before you rent
Deciding to learn how to ride a motorcycle is an exciting step toward a thrilling new adventure, and you will be eager to start. However, there are a few things you should do before you rent a motorcycle.
Find a training course – You’re not required to take a motorcycle training course, but you will need a license to rent. These classes can help familiarize you with the mechanics of riding, and often have a licensing study component. Some, such as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourseSM, even have a licensing waiver for certain states. Additionally, some motorcycle dealerships or your state’s DMV might offer training courses.
Get your license – If you decide not to take a training course, you’ll need to study for, practice and get your license on your own. Be sure to connect with your local DMV to learn the requirements for licensure.
A possible progression could start with lighter weight models and go up to heavier/more powerful options. For instance:
Yamaha R3 – Lighter weight which makes it easier to maneuver and brake
Yamaha XSR900 – This cruiser will kick it up a notch with a bit more power
Triumph Bonneville T100 or Scrambler – Responsive for more challenging, scenic roads and hairpins

The STM Powersports Snow Outlaws series 2023 season finished off in some of the best conditions possible. A solid base of ice and snow at Lakewoods Resort in Cable, Wisconsin, sitting in balmy mid-30s midday weather, served up thrilling—if not record setting—snowmobile drag racing to the huge Weenie Roast crowd. And the world’s quickest snowmobiles raced for the biggest Snow Outlaws purse ever at the March 3-4 World Finals.
Outlaw
Tuner Jack Romine predicted that the beautiful Eagle-1 Outlaw sled ridden by Dominick Ernst would be exceptionally well-prepared for this event, and he wasn’t wrong. The turbocharged, alcohol-guzzling Eagle-1 posted a sharp 3.45 on its very first pass of the weekend on Friday evening that was never exceeded. “And it spun a little,” noted an observant Romine.
“Friday night brought a hard challenge with the track being solid concrete,” said Ernst, an electrician on weekdays. “With the power we were putting down with the Snow Sharks that Hypersports produces, we were able to grab the snow and let the Eagle fly. We were able to pull off a 3.45 at 162.70 mph on our first round of qualifying.”
After a first round bye, Ernst beat Alec Gibas and his screw-supercharged, nitro “Hulk.” Gibas was thrilled after round 1 saw all of the GForce Racing team’s sleds advance, but that excitement would ebb as the day wore on.
“Second round brought a tough, tough competitor—Alec Gibas on the ‘Hulk’ sled,” said Ernst. “The team and I were able to pull off the win over Alec and move to the third and final round against Austin Oertel on the nitro ProCharged John Deere sled.
“Austin put up a fantastic race, but with the combination of Glenn Hall tuning our HRC-4 Eagle-1 and with the Snow Sharks underneath the sled, we were able to pull off the win.”
That made for two wins in this warmth-shortened, two-race Snow Outlaws season. “The weekend brought a lot of excitement, from being number one qualifier to getting the number one spot racing on Saturday for myself and the Nyhus Erectors team.”
In addition to the “Hulk,” Ernst had another new supercharged nitro Hypersports build on the grounds to contend with, the “Kawasaki” of Darryl Cuttell. The Hypersports build that defined this platform—the record setting “Grinch” of owner Jeff Ratzlaff and ridden by Mike Allen, was unable to make the Cable trip after an engine failure on the dyno.
Pro-X 55
Like Ernst, Brian Sullivan also swept both wins this season in Pro-X 55 on his own iconic John Deere sled. Sullivan encountered few troubles but faced a tough ladder and tricky track on this particular weekend.
“The track at Cable was very tricky, a little bit trickier than Rice Lake or tracks we’re used to these last two years. The traction was more limited, and trying to find the correct spot and trying to figure out how to get down it as quick as possible was difficult.
“My best pass was the first round on Saturday, a 3.73 or 3.74.” That netted Sullivan the win against Andy Gosch. “We put the power we thought it could handle. It seemed to handle it great and made a real good pass, so we said, ‘Let’s leave it alone for second round.”
Pro Mod
Seventeen year-old Devin Kirane took out some big names on his way to the Pro Mod win, beating Tyler Stelton, Chris Baynes, and Tony Goodsell on his way to the final round win over Blake Saltzman.
“It’s very cool to go out on a highly recognized field and get the win,” said Kirane, riding this sled for the very first time at this event.
Devin has raced mini bikes, quads, and Polaris SXS. His first win at a sanctioned race was 2021 at age 15, when he won Trail Turbo Shootout at the Weenie Roast. He’s currently undefeated in 900 shootout with a sled he built himself called ‘Pandemonium.”
“I’m 61 and raced since I was 16,” said his proud dad Vince Kirane. “Devin has won more races in two years than me my entire career!”

This last Sunday, March 5th, 2023, hundreds of the world’s most exquisite cars and motorcycles gathered at Amelia Island, FL, for the 28th annual Concours d’Elegance.

I am hoping that I might be able to put a coalition of organizations together to sign-off on a resolution to force our lovely government to offer the public scientific transparency (honesty) through a hearing and to put Climate Doom on trial, on a national stage.
The most absurd aspect of this entire debate revolves around scientific integrity which Al Gore threw out the window. Just this issue is destroying our country and much of the world, but I believe we can do something about it, like Ed Berry did in Montana.

U.S. Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) introduced a SAN-supported bill (H.R. 1435) to protect Americans’ right to choose the technology that powers their motor vehicles. The “Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act” was introduced in response to California’s plans to ban the sale of new gas- and diesel-powered cars and trucks in 2035 unless certain conditions are met.
If approved, H.R 1435 would prevent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from allowing California’s Zero Emissions Vehicle regulations that would ban the sale or use of new motor vehicles with internal combustion engines from taking effect.

I had a swing arm bag with rain gear, some frequently used tools, and fix a flat foam.
They took it all and my Dayroll.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF CEILIDH?
Ceilidh is an adaptation of either Irish Gaelic céilidhe or Scottish Gaelic cèilidh, both from Old Irish céile or céle, meaning “companion.” From here, the deeper origins of ceilidh become murky. One proposal is that ceilidh is distantly related to Latin civis, “citizen,” the source of city and civilization. Ceilidh was first recorded in English in the early 1870s.

The ceilidh, overflowing with dancing and music, went from dusk till dawn in the small countryside village.

The weather changes in the Black Hills daily. I suppose some folks call that Climate Doom and hide inside.
It snows for a couple of days, then bada-bing the sun breaks and it blows my mind every time.
I’m working with Jason in China on some stainless rider bells. I’ve worked with a number of Chinese folks over the years and find them delightful and generally very honest. Hell, most of the shit we have was made in China.
We’re global whether we like it or not.
This has been a quirky week. But I believe I’ve made some serious VLXAFL5 progress, while stumbling from time to time. I should have a report completed next week. I want to have the foot controls completed.
Another outside beauty shot. It just doesn’t get any better.
Hit the gun show in Deadwood. Packed with vendors, it was a kick looking for a hunting rifle. I found what was supposedly a 1899 Kraig rifle, modified with a shortened barrel and a flash suppressor. It holds six rounds with one in the chamber and uses rare 30-40 rounds. Again, the boss told me the scope was rare and 1950 vintage. I’ll test it as soon as the weather clears and search for more ammo.
Okay, so let’s relax and watch carefully as the world changes.
