Deus Ex Machina – First Year Celebration

Welcome to Deus Ex Machina’s latest addition to its global ground fleet of marvel outlets located in Venice, CA. The gas station turned flower shop turned Deus Ex Machina is an awesome place to grab a coffee and peruse the goods.

Featuring in-house custom built motorcycles by Michael “Woolie” Woolaway, hand-shaped and hand-glassed surfboards from the Temple of Enthusiasm in Bali, clothing and artwork designed at the House of Simple Pleasures in Camperdown, Sydney, and brewcraft from downtown Los Angeles coffee disciples, Handsome Coffee Roasters as well as an intimate selection of fine apparel and accessories.

Deus ex Machina (god from the machine) began in Australia 2006, with some neatly customized motorcycles and a quaint notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. Deus ex Machina is a step bigger than a brand: it’s a culture. The Venice location celebrated its 1-year anniversary with a great food, great music and a fun hang.

Deus (“day-us”) didn’t set out only to sell custom parts and hand-built motorcycles, but to celebrate a culture of creativity. The Deus ex Machina showroom/cafe/headquarters in Sydney immediately became a shrine to ‘run-what-you-brung’ resourcefulness and street-honest industrial art.

Deus ex Machina roared into Australia’s cultural consciousness in 2006, with some neatly customised motorcycles and a quaint notion. Our openness and enthusiasm strike a chord with people, wherever they are…

The Deus philosophy recalls an era before the various pursuits of fun – motorcycling, surfing, skateboarding, whatever – were marketed into fundamentalist factions. All are welcomed under the Deus roof, where there’s simply respect for the honesty and enjoyment of the machine. Inclusiveness, authenticity, enthusiasm. It’s a simple and sincere pitch that has winged Deus ex Machina across the world. Deus ex Machina says simply there’s no ‘right way’ to do individualism, its all the same juice.

Since opening the doors at the Camperdown Temple of Enthusiasm Deus has spread its own flavour of internally combustible postmodernism around the globe. The way forward is one down, four up.

The Temple Of Enthusiasm

Deus makes motorcycles. Stripped down and rebuilt. Customized for your life and revved up for everything else. Deus makes four gears and loose throttles. Wind in your hair and thunder in your guts. Full speed towards the volcano. And that’s just the beginning. Deus makes surfboards. Deus makes coffee. Deus makes music. Deus makes things happen.

That’s what Deus makes. For everything else, there is the Temple of Enthusiasm. For caffeine and gasoline. For burnt rubber and trimming fins. For fiberglass and blues. For tacos and tattoos. The Temple is where you end up from never going home. The Temple is the destination where the road doesn’t end.

This is Bali. This is the once-quiet village called Canggu. With its winding rice-paddy back roads and a surf breaks for every appetite, this is where the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm takes root. Like some strange new tree. The Temple must be seen to be understood.

There is beer on tap. There is art on walls. There is shaping bays and surfboards stacked like sets out the back. There is photo studios and Thai food fusion. Cocktails built by hand and paint spilled on the floor. Everything is fast and smooth and toes over the noes. Music in your ears and flashbulbs in your eyes. Hand-carved skateboards and fixed gear pushies. Surfboards and sushi. Movie nights and drag races. It doesn’t stop there.

This is the prayer of greasy hands. This is the path of resin-stuck sandals. This is the sacred ground on which we dig. Welcome to the Temple of Enthusiasm. Yes, we make motorcycles and surfboards. But it’s everything in between that makes us.
Get here and you’ll understand.
