DAYTONA BIKE WEEK KICK OFF PARTY NEWS FOR Thursday March 6, 2014

Hey,

This news is gang busters with reports from Daytona, watch your bike, Bike Week, but lots of reports about legislation. It’s all nuts.

Imagine if we could shift the definition away from Law Makers to Supporters of Freedom and Education. We could accomplish so much more and still be free, avoid corruption, control freaks, and jails. Amazing.

Let’s hit the news and then join a motorcycle rights organization.

The news is sponsored by Easyriders and Cycle Source Magazines.

SENATE BILL TO BAN FED FUNDING FOR MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS–The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is supporting a bipartisan bill introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.); similar to the one in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (Wis.); that prohibits the use of federal funds in establishing motorcycle-only checkpoints (MOC).

This “Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act” would restrict the Secretary of Transportation from granting funds to programs for the use of checking helmet use or creating checkpoints specifically aimed at motorcyclists and their passengers.

An AMA spokesman said that more than a $500,000 has been spent by federal, state and local governments on motorcycle-only checkpoints in the past two years and that the AMA believes that that money would have been better spent on rider education, distracted driving and motorist awareness of motorcycles programs.

Since MOCs were first enacted in New York funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been used to conduct them in Georgia in March 2011 as motorcyclists were on their way to Daytona Beach Bike Week, in northern Virginia during Rolling Thunder in 2011, and in Utah when thousands of riders attended a world-class road-racing event.

The states of California, Missouri, North Carolina, Illinois, New Hampshire and Virginia have passed legislation curbing MOCs and if passed riders across the country will be safeguarded against these prejudicial, discriminatory MOCs (can you say profiling?). For more info about the AMA’s fight against MOCs, go to www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/motorcycleonlycheckpoints.aspx

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION CONGRATULATES ABATE OF ILLINOIS–On Wednesday, February 26th ABATE of Illinois made history. They successfully lobbied for a resolution that was passed by the State House of Representatives. The resolution throws the weight of the general assembly behind a federal bill that would conduct a scientific study on the effects of the new blend of fuel known as E15. This new blend is up from the previously approved blend of E10 fuel that contains up to 10% ethanol.

When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the waiver that allowed for the sale of E15 they did not study the effects of the blend on the internal components of an engine. In fact, motorcycles are not even on the list of vehicles approved by the EPA to use the new blend. Using the blend in a motorcycle, boat, lawn mower etc could be a violation of federal law as they were not included in the waiver.

The Illinois general assembly resolution supports H.R. 875, a bill in the United States House of Representatives that would halt the sale of E15 until an independent scientific study is conducted on the effects of E15 on motorcycles and every other vehicle. Representative Sensenbrenner (R-WI) sponsored the bill.

This sends a crystal clear message to Washington. A top corn growing state is telling the EPA to do its homework Said Jeff Hennie Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF). He added The EPA never even considered what the E15 could do to a small air cooled engine or really any other engine except for a handful of passenger vehicles.

The MRF salutes ABATE of Illinois for their tremendous leadership and bravery. They continue to be one of the models of how a State Motorcycle Rights Organization (SMRO) should work.

BIKES, BOAT WRECKS, AND BARBEQUES
Heading to Utah, the River Brings New Friends, by Scooter Tramp Scotty

One of the strangest aspects of a drifter’s life is the fact that he has almost no permanent reality of his own. Most every man has his own reality; his job, woman, friends, family, home, dog, etc. The things he loves and the things he only tolerates in his world. In this way a man’s life is forged of the people and objects around him. Not so for the drifter; and in my case the only things that remain familiar are my bike and body. Everything around these two staples is in a state of almost constant change. Life became a perpetual visit into other people’s worlds.

Bad Boys Saloon Hits Main Street Daytona
So who is the man behind the newest hot spot on the strip?
Article By: Chris Callen

Year after year, it’s the same thing: a new player on the scene and the rumor mill around the motorcycle industry starts. Who’s behind the new business? Where do they come from? What are they doing here anyway? One such point of curiosity has sprung up for this year’s bike week event in Daytona Beach. The spot I’m talking about is Bad Boys Saloon.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Lou DeRosa, through mutual friends at Sick Boy Apparel and the Iron Horse Saloon. After getting to know him a little bit, I thought the story of his arrival to our scene deserved some attention, so we sat down for an interview.

Rebirth of an American Classic: Case Repairs
The Rebirth of a 1933 VL, text and Photo’s by Panhead Jim

Before the engine could be rebuilt, the cases needed some additional work to repair a damaged portion of the front baffle. It appears that an unknown piece of debris was wedged between the backside of the baffle and the flywheel which eventually knocked a hole right through the baffle.

Chance 2: World Run, Chapter 39 — Hong Kong
By K. Randall Ball

It was a miracle, but Sin overcame the dire constraints of opium addiction, and the following, day her appetite returned. Together for two days straight, as the ship entered Chinese waters, the couple ate and worked out twice a day. Sin’s color returned and although she was thin, she quickly regained her strength. As they neared the Victoria region of Hong Kong, Sin’s ability to move around the ship increased immensely.

PORN PAYS THE BILLS– Students typically take odd jobs to afford their education, but which jobs are considered acceptable to their peers? At Duke University, apparently working in porn is not one of them.

Last month, Duke’s school newspaper, “The Chronicle,” published a story on a college freshman, changing her identity to “Lauren,” who was working in the adult film industry to pay for college. It went viral.

Everyone had an opinion, but last week “Lauren” gave hers. The student wrote an op-ed defending her choice as “a way to graduate from my dream school free of debt, doing something I absolutely love.” Lauren’s story has brought up all kinds of conversations on the cost of education and female sexuality.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–‘Bless me Father, for I have sinned.

I have been with a loose girl.’

The priest asks, ‘Is that you, little Joey Pagano?’

‘Yes, Father, it is.’

‘And who was the girl you were with?’

‘I can’t tell you, Father, I don’t want to ruin her reputation.’

‘Well, Joey, I’m sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?’

‘I cannot say.’

‘Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?’

‘I’ll never tell.’

‘Was it Nina Capelli?’

‘I’m sorry, but I cannot name her.’

‘Was it Cathy Piriano?’

‘My lips are sealed.’

‘Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?’

‘Please, Father, I cannot tell you.’

The priest sighs in frustration. ‘You’re very tight lipped,
and I admire that. But you’ve sinned and have to
atone. You cannot be an altar boy now
for 4 months. Now you go and
behave yourself.’

Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers, ‘What’d you get ?’

‘Four months holiday and five good leads…’

BRAND NEW BIKERNET READER COMMENT– Monster Twin Cam Race Engines from JIMS

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1733

I have a 107 kit now needs to be rebuilt. I was checking up on upgrades for every day riding (120)?

–Kenny Fitz
kennyfitz@comcast.com
martinsburg, WV

The 107 he has is a stock upgrade.

Our 120 is a completely different animal, with different head bolt pattern.
It would be a complete engine swap, NOT a rebuild.

120 kits intended for stock cases are not the best for durability.

Yes, the JIMS 120, if tuned and maintained, is GREAT for every day riding.
The parts are the best of the best (Thus the price tag), and additional room
in the cases and cylinders make for a longer lasting motor.

Street Legal, well that’s a different question?

THE SEALS’ BEST FRIEND: SWISS ARMY KNIVES–How valuable is a Swiss army knife?

Well, the Navy SEALs, perhaps the military’s most elite fighting force, puts the knife at the top of its wish list for survival kits to be issued to its members.

A solicitation for survival kits released last week by the U.S. Special Operations Command lists a variety of tools needed for people stuck in the wild trying to survive. This 31-item, “worst-case scenario” kit includes the iconic Swiss army knife, first developed in 1884; a rescue howler whistle, five survival matches, Fresnel magnifying lens and Sun button compass.

REPORT IN FROM BANGKOK– Occasionally when I travel I have the opportunity to do some interesting photo shoots. This one started out to be about the Bangkok Motorbike Festival, which is a manufacturers’ display in a major shopping mall. Unfortunately there were some political demonstrations in the area requiring the show to be postponed until July.

I used the internet to search for models in the area and had already lined them up so I decided that we could instead use the new Harley dealership in Bangkok. Fortunately I have been friends with the owners for several years and was able to get unlimited access to the facility.

It is an impressive world class state of the art facility featuring every aspect of Harley Davidson.

They even built a nice free-standing restaurant across the driveway. The service area is hospital clean and has about 8-10 bays complete with all the necessary equipment plumbed directly to each lift. The motor clothes area is large and well presented as is the rest of the thoughtfully designed facility. It took over two years from design to finish as their building codes can bothersome like any in the US.

The four models are posed on various motorcycles around the sales floor and also some collectable rare bikes on display in an upstairs area. The green “old Harley” is actually a Japanese Rikuo (Road King), of historical interest and only one of maybe five in the world painstakingly rebuilt by Eric the dealership owner.

In 1932 buyers from the company Sankyo went to Harley Davidson in the U.S. and did one of the best deals in (then) Harley’s history.

Well 1932 wasn’t a good time in the U.S. with the depression. Sankyo arranged to purchase the entire 1200 cc factory. So in 1933, the factory was broken up, sent to the coast, shipped to Japan, and rebuilt at Kita-Shinagawa, Tokyo.

All with money from the Japanese Army and in 1933 production was soon under-way, and the machines were sold initially as Japanese-made Harley Davidson’s, with the name “Rikuo,” or “Road King,” given to them to make them seem more like a domestic product.

MOTORCYCLE RAFFLE OF THE WEEK–
Couple also donated a motorcycle to be raffled as a fundraiser for scholarships

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Gary Savill and Barbara Stampfli-Savill, residents of St. Louis, have made an estate commitment of $2.5 million to the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. The gift will create an endowment to support scholarships for veterinary students and will encourage volunteer work among its recipients.

“We are thrilled to be able to give this gift to the College of Veterinary Medicine with the intent that it will support the development of future veterinarians for years to come,” Gary Savill said. “Barbara and I are animal lovers, and we hope this gift will help care for animals around the nation and the world by educating future classes of veterinarians. We also wish to enable students who otherwise would not be able to afford the education and training required to enter this noble profession. Another important aspect of this scholarship is volunteer work; we hope that students who receive this scholarship will be inspired to continue such charitable work throughout their careers.”

The Stampfli-Savill endowment will provide one or more scholarships to cover 50 percent of all tuition and fees each year to students who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be shown to students from underrepresented ethnic groups. Students awarded scholarships from the endowment will be required to perform at least 120 hours of animal-related community and volunteer service each year.

“Providing a top-tier education for our students at an affordable cost is a priority for this university,” MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin said. “The Stampfli-Savills’ generous gift will help us further that cause. By helping MU train future leaders in the field of veterinary medicine, they will assist generations of students in achieving their academic and career aspirations as we continue to serve the needs of Missourians.”

The Stampfli-Savills, who had no prior affiliation with MU or the College of Veterinary Medicine, were inspired to give their gift to the college after reading about the philanthropy of other donors.

“We are grateful to Barbara and Gary for their generosity to the college and appreciate their desire to help increase diversity within the veterinary profession,” said Neil Olson, dean of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. “Their additional aim of fostering community service is one we as a college also embrace.”

In addition to their $2.5 million gift, the Stampfli-Savills, who own and operate Silver Wraith Choppers, LLC in St. Louis, have donated a custom-built motorcycle to the College of Veterinary Medicine to be raffled as a part of the college’s annual Gentle Doctor Benefit (GDB).

The GDB will be held on April 5 and serves as a fundraiser to support scholarships for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Raffle tickets for the motorcycle are currently on sale. For more information about the motorcycle and to purchase tickets, visit: http://gdb.missouri.edu/motorcycle-raffle/.

STORY OF THE WEEK—The Science isn’t settled on warming.—from Richard McNider and John Christy (Wall Street Journal) in The Week Magazine.

You don’t have to be “a flat-earther” to be skeptical of catastrophic climate-change predictions, said atmospheric scientists Richard McNider and John Christy. While we acknowledge that growing carbon dioxide levels are warming Earth’s atmosphere, we do not agree with “the prevailing wisdom” that the warming will necessarily be extreme.

All predictions of future temperature increases are based on computer modeling of the atmosphere, and such models—which attempt to duplicate an incredibly complex interaction of various gases, sunlight, clouds, heat absorption by the ocean, and dozens of other variables—have been “consistently and spectacularly wrong” since the 1980s.

Built by scientists who already believe “in catastrophic global warming,” the models keep predicting more than triple the temperature increase that actually occurs. The models failed to predict the recent “pause” in global warming, as well as the fact that the Artic has warmed significantly while lower latitudes have not. Given their track record of error, “shouldn’t modelers be more humble,” and admit that climate change is something they don’t fully understand?

SOUTH CAROLINA: Helmet bill warrants support–

South Carolina legislators are being given an opportunity to save lives and money by making mandatory the use of motorcycle helmets. But then, they’ve been given the same opportunity before and passed it by. And Gov. Nikki Haley follows their flawed line of reasoning on the issue.
It’s time for a change.

.Three state representatives, Reps. Wendell Gilliard, D-Charleston, Seth Whipper, D-North Charleston, and Carl Anderson, D-Georgetown, pre-filed a bill that would require all motorcycle riders to wear helmets.
They note that the number of motorcycle deaths is growing. Mr. Gilliard said, “This is about saving lives.”

But they also know it will not be popular with motorcycle groups who say it is their right to decide whether to wear a helmet or not.
ABATE of South Carolina, a bikers’ rights group, already is calling for people to speak out against the bill.

ABATE spokesman Chad Fuller said, “We don’t believe that helmets save lives. Education saves lives.”

Well, a person who is educated on motorcycle safety issues would know that helmets reduce by 37 percent the likelihood of death in a motorcycle crash. The Centers for Disease Control did extensive statistical research to arrive at that conclusion.

The independent FairWarning.org reported that in 1997, one of every 20 traffic deaths was a motorcyclist. By 2010, that surged to one in seven.
Even the S.C. Legislature conceded that helmets improve safety for motorcycle riders when it passed legislation requiring motorcycle riders under the age of 21 to wear a helmet.

Mr. Gilliard says it is his duty as a legislator to save lives if possible. “It’s better to be safe, to be proactive, than to be sorry.” But even those people who discount motorcycle death statistics can’t discount the financial cost of motorcycle accidents.
The CDC found that hospital charges for those suffering traumatic brain injuries were 13 times higher than for motorcyclists with other injuries. Helmets are designed to prevent traumatic brain injuries.

And about 63 percent of the cost of caring for such traumas is borne by the public.
Despite common sense, it is assured that the motorcycle lobby will talk about its freedom to choose not to wear a helmet as if it is somehow different from requiring motorists to wear seat belts.

And it will say that requiring helmets for people’s safety is the act of a Nanny State, while enforcing speed limits for people’s safety is fine.
Reps. Gilliard, Whipper and Anderson are advocating for safer streets, fewer deaths and fewer patients with expensive traumatic head injuries.

The Legislature and the governor should recognize the value of the legislation and and support it.

Incredible. A legislator’s job is to protect our freedoms not run around handing out life jackets. They will lie, cheat, and steal to take our freedoms away. It’s incredible. Join your local motorcycle rights organization quick.—Bandit

THURSDAY BLONDE JOKE–A young blonde woman is distraught because she fears her husband is having an affair, so she goes to a gun shop and buys a handgun.

The next day she comes home to find her husband in bed with a beautiful redhead.
She grabs the gun and holds it to her own head.

The husband jumps out of bed, begging and pleading with her not to shoot herself. Hysterically the blonde responds to the husband, ”Shut up…you’re next!”

THE SCIENCE EDITOR RESPONDS– Climate change is probably happening, but what it will do, and when, and where, are all too hard to calculate, say the smart scientists. The climate has always changed, and who or what is changing it seems irrelevant. Why not just say, okay, it’s changing, and not worry about it? Did the dinosaurs worry? No. Would it have helped them to worry? No.

I did an interview with an important evolutionary biologist named Lynn Margulis a few years ago. She has a movie she made that shows what happens to a population of a particular species when it outgrows its environment. In this case, a strain of bacteria in a petri dish. They reproduce and reproduce and the colony spreads toward the edge of the dish. Then it hits the edge and–boom–they all die, very quickly.

It’s not that 10 percent must die, but 100 percent. This is the way it goes. All successful species outgrow their environment. It’s our fate. The fossil record goes back about 500,000 years. No species alive then is alive now. It is inevitable. That’s our future. Why sweat it?

TOM CALDWELL / OLD GUYS DO RULE RACING–Retirement Announcement.

Tom Caldwell of OLD GUYS DO RULE RACING is retiring from ownership of his Pro Gas Harley-Davidson program. After racing for some 50 years and Pro Gas/Pro Stock Harleys for the last 28 years, including winning 4 National Championships, the last two of them back to back and being chosen the AMRA 2013 Wrench of the Year, Caldwell’s AMRA Championship bike has been sold. Caldwell will be the Maintaining/Tuning and Technical adviser for the new owner.

This is a radical new chapter for Tom as he has lived life ¼ mile at a time for many years.
Caldwell says, “It will be different watching the bike go down the track with someone else on it permanently but I’ll still will have some skin in the game. We will be testing and will kick off the 2013 season with the AMRA Cajun Blowout, March 29th-30th.

Caldwell, a prime example of an owner/rider/tuner, has worked diligently for many years, running out of his own pocket, like most of the Harley racers. This was all done to attain the winning performance he and his team have enjoyed in 2012 and 2013 winning 10 races, 12 – #1 qualifier positions, and 15 records set in the last two years.

Caldwell says, “The only races I lost in the last two years was the rider’s fault, and not the bikes.”

“What can I say about my collaboration with Steve Allstaedt of SA RACING? He is instrumental in my obtaining these goals. My only wish is that I had met him “SOONER”!!!! Steve and I will still be working together with the new team owner/rider.”

“To have been the 5th person to run a 7 second pass in AHDRA 120” trim, is one of my most cherished achievements as, only a few have done this. I have raced with so many great people like Simon, Reno, OJ, Junior, Rat, Capone, Thompson, KW, Suber, Hollenbeck, Raudenbush, Beltiamini, Krenik, Maney, Sternotti, E. Lee, Pouge, McNally, Bradford, Mattiolli, Korn, Fitzmaurice, Feazell, Landolina, Hannum, Tommy Sloan, Departure Bike Works and so, so many others.”

“It has been a privilege to have met so many fans and other competitors all over the world who love to hear a V-Twin roar down the track, and I’ll never forget the exhibition runs at the Mosten Race Day event in Denmark in 1995.”

“To go out on top makes this somewhat more palatable. Running and winning over Andy Simon, who has won several National Championships himself, and setting a new ET record of 7.196 in the “FINAL” run of my career and resetting my records was the way to go out! But, Simon has not hung his helmet up quite yet! And not truly wanting to never say never, if an opportunity opens itself up and works for me; you could see the OLD man still doing his thing!”

“I have raced something for 50 years but, it is time. It will not be easy to not feel the acceleration and to shift my bike into high gear and sail through the traps! To achieve what so many desire and strive for is a privilege, a hard earned one.”

But, the OLD MAN is HAPPY!

I have so many people over the years to thank for their friendship and support, below are a few:

First is Mary Lou Brewton the hardest working advocate for all Harley drag racing.

Dana Eckhardt, Craig Cochran, Tim Ford who traveled the circuit each crewing for several years, Steve Allstaedt, Ray Matlock, Robert Minge of Robert’s Machine & Welding, Randy at Southern Biker Magazine, S&S Cycle, Red Line Oil, Energy One Clutches, MTC, JIMS USA, Trammel Creek Cycle Works, the AMRA, AHDRA, ECRA, IDBA and so many more.

BIKERNET OPENS THE CLIMATE CHANGE CHRONICLES– “IN his marvellous chronicle of human gullibility, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, Charles Mackay wrote: “Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one.”

It’s a pity Mackay did not live long enough to include anthropogenic global warming in his list of popular delusions. There has been none bigger.

Nasty climate we’re having

Maurice Newman, former chairman of the ABC and now chairman of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Council, yesterday pointed out the folly of the global warming movement. Temperatures had not in fact risen by any statistically significant amount for 17 years now, and the “solutions” to this (non) warming were not just useless but cripplingly expensive.

A change in the climate

Former ABC chairman Maurice Newman, now head of the Prime Minister’s business advisory council:

From the UN down, the climate change delusion is a gigantic money tree. It is a tyranny that, despite its pretensions, favors the rich and politically powerful at the expense of the poor and powerless. But the madness of the crowds is waning and, as Mackay writes of the perpetrators: “Punishment is sure to overtake them sooner or later.” We can only hope it comes before most of us descend into serfdom.

Ship of Fools

“Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up,” the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT PERFECT WORD OF THE DAY– cockalorum kok-uh-LAWR-uhm, -LOHR-, noun: a self-important little man.

Meantime, let him be foolish! “I suppose he thinks he’s the grand high cockalorum!” she told herself, chuckling.

— Margaret Wade Campbell Deland, The Iron Woman, 1911

His mother was dead and he could write about her: a young woman, a girl, really, with Sid, who was just a child, and Rose, who was even younger, emigrating from an inhospitable Russian countryside with that young cockalorum of a husband–good God, was he that way even then?–to live in this alien land and die before she was fifty.

— Joseph Heller, Good as Gold, 1979

This mock Latin term is a derivative of cock, meaning “a male chicken.” It came to English in the early 1700s.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–Here goes from the Week Magazine:

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research found that since Missouri removed background checks in 2007, the murder rate there jumped 16 percent—about 60 additional murders every year.

Ah, but not so fast kimosabe:

Don’t blame those deaths on the repeal of the background check law, said John Lott in FoxNews.com. “Missouri was on an ominous path before the law was ended,” and the state’s murder rate had increased by 32 percent over the previous five years. If anything, getting rid of permit-to-purchase “slowed the growth rate in murders”–probably because it encouraged law-abiding citizens to obtain firearms to defend themselves against criminals. There’s “ample research across all the states” showing that background checks do not reduce murder rates.

There you have it.

AT LAST, Motorcycle Checkpoint Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate–The United States Senate is seeking to end the unfair practice of federally funded motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF). Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has introduced legislation, which would further prohibit the federal government from funding mandatory motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. Joining her as the lead republican on the bill is Senator Ron Johnson. Also joining, as original co-sponsors, are Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH).

The federal government funded motorcycle-only checkpoints through a $70,000 grant in 2011. Georgia state police conducted two mandatory motorcycle only checkpoints. They timed the checkpoints with Daytona Florida bike week traffic setting up on the southbound lanes of I-75 and I-95 on March 9th 2012, the same day Daytona bike week began. They did the same setup during the closing day, but set up in the northbound lanes.

The MRF supports this legislation to end these checkpoints whole-heartedly and will be working with the United States Senate to pass this important legislation.

“Motorcycles are an important part of New Hampshire’s identity and economy,” Shaheen said. “These checkpoints unfairly target motorcycle riders who already have their vehicles inspected and registered just like all motorists. We don’t have checkpoints that stop cars to check their tire pressure and we shouldn’t for motorcycles either.”

We commend Senator Shaheen for taking on this troubling and important issue, Said Jeff Hennie, Vice President Government Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. To use taxpayer dollars to inconvenience motorcyclists is a practice that should be stopped immediately and we look forward to working with both Senators Shaheen and Johnson to accomplish that.

Some states are addressing this issue by either prohibiting any motorcycle-only checkpoints, such as Missouri, Virginia, California, North Carolina, or prohibiting the state from receiving any federal dollars like they did in New Hampshire and Illinois.

The MRF urges you to contact both your U.S. Senators and ask them to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation; a bill number is expected soon. The MRF will keep you informed on this important issue.

After a short week end of much needed rain, including wind, lightning, thunder clappers, tornado warning sirens, mud-slides and more in Southern California, life is once again sunshine, blue skies and a list one mile long full of to do’s. What the fuck we got at least an inch of rain, come on.

Future long range forecast calls for sunshine through November, possibly longer, with very few days of rain mixed in. After all these years, I’ve finally decided to plot a course that’s subject to change at any given moment, be prepared.

This past week the 5-Ball Racing Teams 124 inch- Turbo Charged Raycer moved to the top of the top priority list. The hot rod rolled onto the Handy lift with a few changes in the making, all in the name of safety, strength and drivetrain longevity. First up was adding a twin cam transmission case rather than an Evo-type case with an adapter plate

With a stroke of luck a friend in San Jose uncovered a twin cam transmission case, boxed it up and a uniformed postal carrier delivered the package to my doorstep next day, regular mail. Amazing, simply amazing.

The case required machining to relieve the upper edge for a 6-speed in a 5-speed case, shaft fitment. We’re running a JIM’s USA 6-Speed, Rivera Primo Pro Clutch, stock type-adjustable primary chain tensioner, Tsubaki chain, Fischer Harmonic Damper, Spyke inner and outer primary cases fitted with a larger transmission shaft bearing.

The rear exhaust is getting the bung relocated for easier access and it will allow room to lower the pan in the battery box, more room for stuff.

Images were shot with my trusty I-Phone, Wednesday evening in Long Beach, CA. Looks like we are heading back together with a solid foundation.

Keep an eye on latest news.

LATEST BIKERNET BETSY New Bikernet Reader Comment!–
“It’s got to be the Goin that’s good”

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=10043

You loved him too, I can tell by the article and the way in which it was written. I have loved him since two days before I was sixteen and James T. allowed me to sit on his lap for the rest of a concert because my seat got taken. He was a perfect gentleman alwaysm, never would let me come into the clubhouse when “business” was going on..

He came and got me in the Winter in his brother’s car when my mama said no riding on the ice… We came across one another several times in the following 40 years and knew each other in a very special way. He never told me he loved me, but I think he did in some small way. I could see it in those vivid blue eyes and quirky smile. I sure loved him and a piece of my heart went with him when he left.

Thank you sweet girl for such a touching article on such a remarkable and unique man.

This Friday, March 7, Allstate Insurance Company and legendary motorcycle builder Rick Fairless will unveil to the crowds at Daytona Bike Week his latest custom creation – a reimagined Victory Vegas 8-Ball.

The custom-built motorcycle is part of this year’s grand prize for the Allstate Motorcycle Sweepstakes and will feature signature Rick Fairless designs and customization never before seen by the public. This is the fifth year of the Allstate Motorcycle Sweepstakes and the first year that a Fairless custom is featured as the grand prize.

This ain’t a bolt-on custom.”

Fairless will be on hand to help debut the new custom machine at the Allstate Rider Protection Zone, which is located at Daytona Speedway. In addition to winning the motorcycle, Allstate will give the winner a trip for two to Rick Fairless’ Strokers Dallas for a free custom paint job consultation, personalized by Fairless himself.

“We’re confident that the winner of this year’s Allstate Motorcycle Sweepstakes is not only going to love their new ride,” said Pam Hollander, senior director of marketing for Allstate Insurance Company, “but they’re also going to love the whole Allstate experience.”

Following the unveiling, the Allstate Victory Vegas 8-Ball, along with Allstate’s other custom creations, will be on display in 2014 at the Allstate Rider Protection Zone at the following motorcycle rallies:

MARCH IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AWARENESS MONTH— MS affects many people, everyone knows someone with MS. One of our own Bikernet Staff lives daily with MS, so please support this if you can!

This is a fantastic event, most events for MS give the money to research, which is wonderful but this is even better the money actually goes to help people with MS who really need it. Having MS is devastating physically, emotionally and mentally and many people do not realize it is also a huge financial burden.

About Multiple Sclerosis

•Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system.
•MS interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving.
•Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The advancement, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
•Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease.
•MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.1 million worldwide.

ROCK AGAINST MS FOUNDATION will provide services from a three (3) grant resource system, which will provide daily care, quality of life needs and emergency funding, while assisting people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to live independent and full lives. Additionally, a brick and mortar facility we will call THE ROCK HOUSE is in the planning stages, and will provide free of charge, multiple programs and opportunities designed to heal the mind, body and spirit of all those whose lives have been affected by MS.

WATCH YOUR BIKE IN DAYTONA–Chop Shop Busted Amidst Bike Week

Thousands of motorcycles in Daytona Beach were just too much of a temptation for a group of out-of-state thieves. Investigators said they set up a temporary chop shop in Volusia County just for Bike Week.

The thieves set it all up in a vacation rental home. It was just a one week rental and neighbors told WFTV it was stacked with motorcycles.

Bikes were parked in long lines during Bike Week and, when nobody was watching, a pair of friends needed some parts so, investigators say, they stole them.

Richard Cintron walked in front of a judge Tuesday accused of stealing just one bike, but investigators say he may have been dealing in them for five years.

“They had Harleys and Suzukis and Kawasakis and a couple of dirt bikes,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.

Neighbors of a New Smyrna Beach rental home watched Cintron and a friend unload a trailer full of bikes Sunday.

“You’d see them piddling around in the trailer, moving stuff in and out of the trailer. I never did look in the trailer to see what was in there,” neighbor Robert Williams said.

When a bike was stolen from Daytona’s boardwalk area Monday night, the owner called local repair shops. Just his wheels turned up Tuesday at a store in Holly Hill.

Investigators were there waiting when Cintron and a friend came to pick them up. They led investigators back to the New Smyrna house where they found more parts and another stolen bike.

Investigators said Cintron’s friend admitted stealing bikes in New York, registering them in Florida and then reselling them up north for the last five years.
“Nothing leaves a bad taste in your mouth than having a $20,000 piece of machinery and, when you come back, your motorcycle’s stolen,” Chitwood said.

Police said they’re more focused on motorcycle thefts this year. Bike thefts climbed from 26 in 2008 to 42 in 2009.

Cintron is the third accused thief arrested this week.

WFTV talked to the woman who owned the rental home. She said no one would ever guess they were thieves. She described them as polite. They gave her their IDs and even asked if they should take their shoes off in the house to avoid getting the carpet dirty.

The House Rules Committee “pulled” it to the floor calendar this afternoon, which brings us one step closer to actually getting legislative relief for the motorcyclists of this state who get stuck at non-detecting traffic signals.

SOUTH DAKOTA–South Dakota House Near Unanimous On Photo Ticketing Ban

South Dakota House votes 69-1 in favor of prohibiting speed and red light cameras.
In the South Dakota House of Representatives, Democrats and Republicans agree on one thing: They do not want red light cameras or speed cameras operating in the state. By a vote of 69 to 1 on Wednesday, lower chamber lawmakers gave final approval to a photo ticketing ban that leaves no room for private companies to mail citations to residents.

“No state, county, municipal, or township authority may use photo radar speed detection to determine compliance with any speed restriction imposed by this chapter or by any local ordinance,” House Bill 1100 states. “No state, county, municipal, or township authority may use a photo monitoring device to detect any red light violation.”

State Representative Peggy Gibson (D-Huron) on Wednesday listed the problems that spurred her to introduce the bill banning cameras.

“Red light cameras are not the most effective way of reducing red light violations,” Gibson said. “Red light cameras are used primarily used to raise money and not improve safety. Ticket recipients are not notified quickly out of the offense, and there’s no guarantee of delivery of the citation because it goes through US mail. There is no certifiable witness to the supposed violation.”

South Dakota’s courts have agreed with Gibson that there are due process problems with the cameras. In 2006, I.L. Wiedermann sued Sioux Falls after he received a ticket from Redflex Traffic Systems in the mail. In June 2010, a state circuit court judge ruled that the Sioux Falls camera ordinance violates state law because it “decriminalizes” the running of red lights, which the state classifies as a misdemeanor (view decision).

“Everywhere else in the state, running a red light amounts to a criminal penalty, similar to a speeding ticket,” Gibson said. “Criminal penalties can be appealed in the court system; however, automated tickets are civil penalties similar to parking tickets. And civil penalties provide less recourse for drivers that want to contest them.”

Gibson’s bill cleared the state House in 2011, but it faced opposition. This time, one of the former red light camera proponents explained the new thinking in the chamber.

“A couple of years ago when this came through the last time, I supported these lights,” state Representative Steve Hickey (R-Minnehaha) said. “I’ve come to believe these aren’t good. I watched that case in Sioux Falls go down, and I do believe that guy’s rights were infringed upon. This is a bill that I’ve shifted my thinking.”

If the bill clears the state Senate and receives the signature of Governor Dennis Daugaard (R), South Dakota will join the fifteen other states that ban the prohibit the use of automated ticketing machines.

HAVE A BLAST IN DAYTONA—In the meantime Ray will be scrambling to ship his bike back east for tuning, with Dan Thayer. Toby is wrapping up his road test story on the 650 ATK, and I’m working with ikon Suspension on a new shock for my Mudflap girder.

We are also looking for a Ninja engine for Toby’s wrecked Kawasaki. Lot’s of irons in the fire. Hell, I’m waiting for a report from Kent Weeks at Lucky Devil’s Metal Works in Houston. I should know something about our Belly Tank trike frame tomorrow.

I need to call JIMS about my engine and transmission. We have a plan for a quick run to Sturgis, and it looks like I’m riding an Indian to the Smoke Out. It’s already March, so there’s no time to lose.

Hang on for more reports.

Ride free forever,

–Bandit
