Hey,
It’s Biketoberfest Weekend in Daytona. I constantly have discussions with folks about the industry. Some folks are crying and others are jumping up and down. It’s confusing as hell, but more motorcyclists and events are coming online daily. Maybe that’s good and maybe it cuts the pie in too many directions.
There are more builders than ever before. At one time, I knew most of the builders in the world, now I don’t. I will start my Las Vegas story next week. I thought Las Vegas kicked ass even after the terrible shooting.
I tried to reach out to Jim Betlach, who is working with Shelly Rosemeyer of Daytona Harley on the lot across the street and he was too busy to chat. I hope that’s a great sign that Biketoberfest is cooking.
And every year the Tropical Tattoo Bike Show sponsored by Bikernet and Cycle Source gets bigger. Don’t miss it.
The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS FROM TENNESSEE– Carol Simpson here in Tennessee.
Two factoids have come to my attention while working at the Tennessee State Legislature during our “off season”. Our legislature meets from January into April/May every year.
Lobbyists come by to “visit” and gather info on “what’s been happening”. Legislators spend the “off months” campaigning, making money in their day jobs, and going to national conferences where they take the pulse of what is happening in other states and in special interest industries.
One friendly lobbyist, who rides, and is a representative of Farmers Mutual Insurance company made a point of coming by my office about four months ago. At the National convention of INSURANCE companies relayed that re-instituting mandatory helmet laws in vunerable states as a PRIORITY issue. Michigan was #1 target because their freedom of choice is recent, and because their skewing of numbers supposedly show a marked increase in fatalities.
Several legislators who are members of NCSL National coalition of State Legislators attended National level conference. Mandatory Helmet Laws was featured in meetings of the breakout Highway Safety meetings. Statistical assistance and directional strategies were discussed and made available to NCSL members through their vast resources. Of the five or six national state legislature associations, NCSL is the largest with the biggest staff of support and data.
We have a BIG battle brewing. If I was aware of these TWO initiatives from TWO entities, my guess is that there are many more and coalitions are being formed.
I will look into more information if asked by any of you out there in Freedom of Choice land. Sharing info on the reps list is a big boon to our battles.

ON THE CLIMATE CHANGE FRONT–
In this issue of the Week Magazine is a report about the Environmental Protection Agency. They moved this week to repeal form President Obama’s flagship environmental policy, designed to fight climate change. They will attempt to repeal the Clean Power Plan. Later in the article it says the plan never went into effect because of legal challenges.
There seems to be more and more scientific evidence to prove it’s all been a witch-hunt. I have suggested someone mount a lawsuit against Al Gore for lying to the public, destroying businesses, and creating national uncertainty. Check the ClimateDepot.com and if you haven’t watched Cowspiracy, Climate Hustle and Climate Swindle you should.
This case could save the motorcycle industry, the motorcycle aftermarket, and the entire performance vehicle industry. It could allow brothers to ride free and confident once more. Something to think about.

VERTICAL PLATE BILL IN TENNESSEE– Tennessee passed a vertical plate law a few years ago.
In Tennessee, every bill is accompanied by a Fiscal Note, laying out what the state will either gain or lose in state revenue if the bill is passed.
This bill had a $1400 Fiscal Note that said it would cost the state $1400 in lost revenue from tickets that are issued for vertical plates every year. As in your case, the Dept of Safety was against the bill because they would lose money.
Our House Sponsor was a very experienced old-school, motorcycle friendly Democrat. Our Senate sponsor was a motorcycle friendly Republican with just a few years of service under his belt. The Senator said the fiscal note would kill the bill. The House sponsor buried the bill in an Omnibus bill that authorized dozens of new vanity tags, each with a fiscal note that promised income for the state.
No one “uncovered” the vertical tag section in the House, and it was included in the Senate bill also, and both bills pass unanimously. An excellent lesson in learning that there are more than one way to skin a cat. All we did was select the best sponsors and keep quiet. SUCCESS!!
Many thanks to One of our many champions–Representative John DeBerry! Senator Mike Bell was grateful to be able to bring yet another win to the motorcyclists of Tennessee. Both men also work diligently in our efforts toward Freedom of
Choice!!! In more recent years, Mike Bell has sponsored other pieces of successful legislation for us and joined the ranks of Champion, the highest award we give to our legislators and some of our regulators!!!!

Abate of South Dakota is introducing a bill to make mounting motorcycle plates vertical,. I just found out that our Dept of Public Safety/Highway patrol will be testifying against us. What bullshit. One state would kill the ability to run vertical plates over $1400 they could torture innocent motorcyclists for, and another state can’t read a vertical license plate? It’s a sad day.–Bandit

THE BUCKLEGUY RETURNS– stocking the entire line of Fil Au Chinois!
We have just added the entire line of the French, Fil Au Chinois, Lin Cable thread. Lin cable is 100% corded waxed linen made in France and used by some of the most well known brands in the world. It is also a thread commonly used by high end leather crafters for hand sewing. Lin Cable is known for its strength and beautiful color selection.
Cable linen is twisted linen that is assembled a second time, moistened and re-twisted. This moistening prevents the fibers from distorting. Cabling increases the resistance, giving a nicely rounded thread generally used in luxury leather goods.
We are stocking all 44 colors in all 5 sizes. We also stock the harness and glover needles used for hand stitching these threads.

FLORIDA VOTING RIGHTS– When a person finishes all the things that the court requires them to do They Have Paid Their Debt To Society.
If their voting rights were taken away they should automatically be re-instated.
The Current Procedure To Get Voting Rights Restored In The State Of Florida Needs To Be Changed.
This Relates To Numerous Motorcycle Riders and hinders them in fighting for motorcycle rights.
–from ROGUE
FLORIDA TODAY NEWSPAPER ARTICE – PLEASE HELP RESTORE VOTING RIGHTS.
Former felons deserve the right to vote:
If you were ever convicted of a felony in Florida, even of just trespassing on a posted orange grove or construction site, you might forget about ever voting here. Also, if like so many young people, you once got involved in using or passing drugs, forget it.
The Florida Constitution makes it almost impossible for any person ever convicted of a felony, violent or non-violent, to vote in this state. This applies to persons of all races, for all of their lives, after any sentences have been served, any restitution has been paid and all probation or parole has been completed.
At least 1.5 million Floridians fall into this category. Almost one in 10 Floridians can’t vote. Florida is the top state by number of disenfranchised voters followed by Texas at about 500,000. Over 25 percent of all disenfranchised Americans reside in Florida.
Most states restore voting rights upon a person leaving prison or when all terms of his or her sentence are completed. Florida is one of only four of the 50 states with lifetime disenfranchisement (the others are Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia). On the other hand, Maine and Vermont allow even imprisoned convicts to vote.
Florida has a constitutional procedure for restoration of voting rights to former felons. It is the Board of Executive Clemency, consisting of the governor and the Cabinet, and completely controlled by the governor.
Under the board’s rules, after a non-violent and non-sexual offender has completed his or her sentence and all other conditions, he or she must wait five years before being eligible to apply for restoration of rights.
They must remain arrest-free during that five-year period. That is not easy in this state, especially for African- Americans.
From 2011 to 2016, an average of only 429 of 1.5 million former felons per year had their voting rights restored. It is estimated that it will take roughly 38 years, under the present rules, just to clear the backlog.
This historical evil began 150 years ago, after the Civil War, when the federal Reconstruction Act of 1867 forced states to grant suffrage to all men. A number of Southern states, including Florida, added numerous provisions, like educational requirements and lifetime voting bans for convicted felons, to keep former slaves from the ballot box.
They knew and intended that such people had been and would be abused by the criminal justice system and disenfranchised for crimes viewed as “Negro crimes”.
Florida’s Constitution has been revised a number of times since the 1860s, but the blanket ban on voting by formerly convicted felons has remained and is still in our Constitution today. African-Americans are still overburdened by being more likely to be arrested and convicted of felonies than whites who commit the same crimes.
There is a great need, for the benefit of all citizens, to eliminate this moral injustice. However, the governor and the leadership of the Florida Legislature have refused to deal with the problem.

WISDOM FROM THE GRAY MOUNTAIN– What is Karma?
A king was touring his kingdom on his elephant. Suddenly he stopped in front of a shop in the market and said to his minister, “I don’t know why, but I want to hang the owner of this shop.” The minister was shocked. But before he could ask the king why, the king had moved on.
The next day, the minister went to that shop dressed as one of the locals to see the shopkeeper. He casually asked him how his business was faring. The shopkeeper, a sandalwood merchant, reported sadly that he had hardly any customers. People would come to his shop, smell the sandalwood and then go away. They would even praise the quality of the sandalwood but rarely buy anything.
His only hope was that the king would die soon. Then there would be a huge demand for sandalwood for performing his last rites. As he was the only sandalwood merchant around, he was sure the king’s death would mean a windfall.
The minister now understood why the king had stopped in front of this shop and expressed a desire to kill the shopkeeper. Perhaps, the shopkeeper’s negative thought vibration had subtly affected the king, who had, in turn, felt the same kind of negative thought arising within.
The minister; a noble man, pondered over the matter for awhile. Without revealing who he was or what had happened the day before, he expressed a desire to buy some sandalwood. The shopkeeper was pleased. He wrapped the sandalwood and handed it over to the minister.
When the minister returned to the palace, he went straight to the court where the king was seated and reported that the sandalwood merchant had a gift for him. The king was surprised. When he opened the package, he was pleasantly surprised by the fine golden color of the sandalwood and its agreeable fragrance. Pleased, he sent some gold coins to the sandalwood merchant. The king also felt sorry in his heart that he had harbored unbecoming thoughts of killing the shopkeeper.
When the shopkeeper received the gold coins from the king, he was astounded. He began to proclaim the virtues of the king who had, through the gold coins, saved him from the brink of poverty. After some time, he recalled the morbid thoughts he had felt towards the king, and repented for having entertained such negative thoughts for his own personal goal.
If we have a good and kind thought for another person, that positive thought will come back to us in a favorable way. But if we harbor evil thoughts, those thoughts will come back to us as retribution.
“What is Karma?” asked Swami
Many disciples replied, “our words, our deeds, our feelings, our actions……”
Swami shook his head and said

CMT/ABATE is working on strategy this year, and most likely will not run a Freedom of Choice bill in this first session of two year General Assembly.
We are ECSTATIC that Arizona defeated the Mandatory Helmet law in the first committee that heard that bill this year. We are hopeful that any state facing a Mandatory Helmet initiative will be equally successful. The data of these efforts will be a HUGE part of our future strategy
We have been successful in having our Endowment Grant reinstated for Safety and Awareness from the Tennessee Department of Safety. On Wednesday, March 22, we will be producing the Don’t Ride Fried Carnival on the Entrance Patio of the Legislative Plaza. Check our facebooks for pics of this informative and fun event.
Please reply with the status of any helmet legislation in your state so we can follow the progress.

Life is amazing. The number of people who died from motorcycle accidents annually is just over 5,000. Over 150,000 people die annually because they went to a hospital. The number of people who die from falls is three times the number who are killed by guns. The list goes on.
QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VOCABULARY CLASS–
verb
1. to affect as a Gorgon; hypnotize; petrify.
QUOTES
He says people who travel–young people especially–ought to be in time, and not disturb folks who are punctual–a sentiment in such strict accord with the views of the rest of the company, that they give a murmur of approval, and Gorgonize me for the next twenty miles or so with a petrifying equanimity.
— Frank Fowler, Dottings of a Lounger, 1859
ORIGIN
Latin Gorgo (stem Gorgon-) is the immediate source of gorgonize. Gorgo is a direct borrowing from Greek Gorg? (one of whose stems is Gorgón-), a clear derivative of the adjective gorgós “terrible, dreadful.” The very productive English verb suffix -ize comes from Late Latin -izare, from Greek -izein, as in Greek baptízein “to dip, plunge,” borrowed into Christian Latin as baptizare “to baptize,” whence English baptize. Gorgonize entered English in the 17th century.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN FOR LUNCH—
100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.
A woman walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she’s going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer tells her that the bank will need some kind of security for such a loan, so the woman hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce that’s parked on the street in front of the bank.
Everything checks out, and the bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. An employee drives the Rolls Royce into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there.
Two weeks later, the woman returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.
The loan officer approaches her and says: “We are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we’re a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked out your accounts and found that you were a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”
“Well, where else in Manhattan can I park my car for two weeks for fifteen bucks?”

KEEP THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN– The Chicken and the Harley
On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day the two were playing, when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink.
Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help !
Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor.
Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life.
Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive on the shiny Harley, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him. After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful bike, rescued the horse !
Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned.
The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals.
A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life !The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle.
Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his hangy-down thingy and he would then lift him out of the pit.
The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life.
The moral of the story ? (yep, you betcha, there is a moral !) ‘When You’re Hung Like A Horse, You Don’t Need A Harley To Pick Up Chicks !

EPA ALERT–Motorcyclist should be paying attention to what is going on at the EPA.
I for one support Scott Pruitt as the new head of the agency and expect some changes in the agency that will make motorcyclist happy.
Ethanol in fuel has been a long debated subject and those interested are suggested to contact their elected officials with their concerns.

Trump’s EPA Pick Worries Renewable Fuel Proponents– As Oklahoma attorney general, Scott Pruitt vigorously fought the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard, which Donald Trump supported in his campaign.
During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to pick a leader for the Environmental Protection Agency who would be friendly to agricultural interests, once even saying he would appoint a farmer to head the agency.
But with his selection of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt this week, Trump has made some of his allies in the farming and biofuel industries—who helped get him elected—a little nervous.
During his tenure as attorney general of an oil-rich state, Pruitt has railed against the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the EPA-run program that requires oil refiners to blend an increasing amount of plant-based fuels into gasoline.
The controversial requirement has transformed American agriculture, helping boost demand for corn and soybeans, the country’s two most widely grown crops. It has also become a cornerstone of the rural economy. The oil and gas industry has targeted the standard since it was first enacted in 2005, then expanded in 2007. It has led biofuels to supplant billions of gallons of petroleum in gasoline and diesel, a trend that has cut overall oil demand.
In campaigns to roll back or repeal renewable fuel requirements, the oil industry has said higher ethanol mandates could harm consumers, damage their automobiles and trigger fuel rationing and supply shortages. Pruitt, an oil industry ally, has called the program “unworkable.”
The goal of the RFS was to reduce dependence on foreign oil and combat climate change. But in an unusual alliance with oil companies, environmental groups have cautioned the EPA on expanding the volume targets under the RFS. They are concerned that biofuels, particularly corn ethanol, compete with food production and drive agricultural expansion and deforestation, which can erode the climate benefit. Most groups have pushed for cellulosic ethanol—derived from the stringy fiber of plants—but development of it has lagged, making it difficult for producers to meet volume targets.
Bob Dinneen, head of the Renewable Fuels Association, said, “It’s the Donald Trump administration, not the Scott Pruitt administration. At the end of the day, he will have to abide by the boss. Mr. Trump has repeatedly expressed his support for ethanol, and the RFS specifically.”
But other policy groups and lawmakers are more concerned.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who has championed the RFS, has made reassuring comments about the program under a Trump administration, telling Bloomberg Markets last month, “There’s going to be a lot of saber-rattling, but it supports too many jobs and too much rural infrastructure is set up for it. The Renewable Fuel Standard is solid.”

BORN TO RIDE DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT– I already have that movie. I downloaded it the first time you mentioned it. Opening scene has you interviewing the lead actor for bringing down the corrupt politician.
There is 1991 movie of the same name ‘Born To Ride’ about military hiring a biker to teach motorcycle patrol to troops in war zone.

THERE YOU HAVE IT— Jon Towle reminded me Halloween is just around the corner. There’s the IMS show coming right up and the show series begins.
I need to write my Las Vegas Bikefest saga, and tomorrow I hope to publish a classic Knucklehead feature to be followed by McQuiston’s K-model magnum. I’m scrambling, and life couldn’t be more interesting.
I sorta handled my Panhead exhaust system. You wouldn’t believe it. Making pipes is a brain puzzle. Hope you like them. Lots of stick welding coming up. Then it’s oil lines, gas lines and wiring. Let’s see what happens this weekend.
Let me know how Biketoberfest fares in the world of stumbling events. See if you can help Bill Dodge of Bling Cycles rebuild after the hurricanem (watch for the story on Bikernet). A brother and I discussed a motorcycle series yesterday and I introduced him to Tim at Century Cycles. You never know what might happen next.
