BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS PRE-VEGAS DEBACLE

Okay,

This has been another crazy week in Paradise. Just about time I’m scrambling to catch up with content, bike builds, building efforts, and freelance projects, someone breaks down and needs emergency assistance, or we have a problem with the site.

Last week, we were about to wrap up an exciting 911 Sunday Post, and have dinner with a long time friend, Mark Lonsdale. Mark was a Hamster, but since 911 he has spent most of the last decade in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Hamster powers decided he missed too many functions, and he is no longer a member, too bad. Anyway, Mark trains troop and has written about eight books on Close Quarters Combat, to Sniper Training. Recently, he spent a year working on his first fiction novel effort, a saga based before the Civil War.

He also works as a stunt coordinator for the film industry, is a master in Judo, and trains youngsters. We planned to have dinner discussing bikes and his writing efforts, when we received word that our server system blew up, and the crew in Columbus, Ohio was called to general quarters.

It’s been havoc ever since. But there’s always a solution, panic. Slowly, all the systems have been repaired, unfortunately the back-up systems weren’t able to grab all the fast content flying at Bikernet.

Bottom line, we’re back on line and cooking once again. This news will give you some indication or our activity level. If we don’t face an earthquake this weekend, a major party, or visitors from outer space, one of the FXRs might be running (just received a Motion Pro clutch cable from Biker’s Choice and my Wire Plus speedo should arrive tomorrow), and the Salt shaker will feel the benefits of a new Spyke charging system, plus the palm trees out back will be trimmed and some weeds pulled. Could be interesting, if it stay quiet around here…

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY PHD PROGRAM, LESSONS IN LIFE–A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.

The Genie says, ‘I’ll give each of you just one wish.’

“Me first! Me first!” says the admin clerk “I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.”

Puff! She’s gone.

‘Me next! Me next!’ says the sales rep. ‘I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.’

Puff! He’s gone.

‘OK, you’re up,’ the Genie says to the manager.

The manager says, ‘I want those two back in the office after lunch’

Moral of the story:

Always let your boss have the first say.

The BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS have always been an important part of the S&S heritage of speed– Although S&S didn’t campaign a bike this year, our customers are setting records on the salt with S&S engines. Here’s an example from the 2011 BUB International Motorcycle Speed Trials.

BONNEVILLE, Utah (September 12, 2011) – The quest to find the 2011 World’s Fastest Bagger is officially completed, and the award goes once again to Chris Rivas of Chris Rivas V-Twin in Fresno CA. Chris, riding the newly upgraded “Aero Glide” designed by Carl Brouhard Designs, completed the timed mile with an average speed of 195.036 mph to turn in the fastest measured mile ever on a Bagger.

Thanks to a special appearance by S&S Cycle’s Executive Chairman & CEO George Smith, after a 20 year hiatus, some very smart tuning decisions were made in order to accomplish what some thought to be impossible. Even though exit speeds are not a part of the official times, it is now clear that a 200 mph lap on a Bagger is very attainable. Not only is the body design unique, The Aero Glide motorcycle also has several very unique features such as a naturally aspirated 240 HP S&S Powered 167 cubic inch Twin Cam that button starts, thanks to the S&S Easy Start Camshafts designed by the engineers at S&S Cycle.

Bassani Exhaust designed a unique 2 into 1 pipe that maintains a peak torque throughout the entire useable RPM range. A Barnett Lock Up Clutch delivers all that power to an S&S Cycle 6-Speed Transmission. The not so unique parts on this bike come straight out of the “Fat Book” courtesy of Drag Specialties, including the Metzler Tires that keep the whole package connected to the ground.

SASHA & Motoroadeo MMC release an official Love Ride fundraiser song–The Love Ride song is humbly dedicated to the incredible legacy of the annual Love Ride fundraiser event founded by Oliver Shokouh of Glendale Harley-Davidson. Written by an indie artist who truly does live to ride and works in the motorcycle industry, this song represents the passion to serve and help others in the motorcycle community.

“The goal is to make the Love Ride song the largest fundraiser tune in history because there are so many people in need and motorcyclists are known for their generous fundraising efforts worldwide. The more money raised the more causes can be supported,” tells Sasha Mullins Lassiter, songwriter and performer with Motoroadeo MMC.

She is best known as a journalist, author of the books Chrome Cowgirl and Bikerlady, and a motorcycle event manager for Jay Allen and Melissa Penland.  The Love Ride song fundraiser campaign will continue through 2012. A music video to support this project is forthcoming and will feature fun historical footage from the Love Ride.

“I’m honored that Oliver and the Love Ride committee accepted this project. What he and his team have created with the Love Ride represents the giving heart of the motorcycle riding family. With the economic challenges facing charities these days, in my small way, I wanted to contribute to a foundation in our lifestyle that has the ability and resources to help all kinds of causes,” said Sasha.

Founded by Sasha and husband, Patrick Lassiter, the entity Motoroadeo MMC (MotorMusic Club) is comprised of various musicians who love motorcycles and cool cars and are gear heads. Patrick and Sasha own River Front Recording in Nashville where they produce and record all genres of music.

Patrick also plays bass for country music legend, Tracy Lawrence. The Love Ride, a 501(c)3 charity, began in 1984 to raise funds for children’s charities. Oliver Shokouh is Love Ride’s founder and owner of Harley-Davison of Glendale located at 3717 San Fernando Road, Glendale, CA, an authorized dealer for Harley-Davidson and Buell Motorcycles serving customers since 1976.

WORKING ON A 15TH ANNIVERSARY BIKERNET RING CREATED BY NINO 925– I finished the ring and made the wax, but after, making the wax I noticed that the letters in the ribbon, both top and bottom did not come out. The only solution is to eliminate both ribbons and just put the letters by themselves, as this would give us more room and make make the letters bigger and wider what do you think?

CHARTING THE FUTURE OF BIOENERGY–
Posted on September 5, 2011, Monday
KUCHING: It comes as no small surprise to learn that one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies is also one of the world’s biggest distributors of biofuels and co-owner of the world’s largest ethanol producing enterprises.

But the reality is that last year, Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) distributed 9.6 billion liters of biofuels. The oil and gas giant also took its first major step into biofuel production by signing a multi-billion joint venture with Cosan, a leading producer of bioethanol, sugar and power in Brazil.

According to a Reuters report, the newly formed US$12 billion joint venture called Raízen will be Brazil’s third largest fuel distributor and the world’s largest bioenergy operation.

Although Shell is not the first oil and gas company to venture into biofuels, this joint venture is significant because it shows that oil and gas players are diversifying.

It is also a strong vote of confidence in the commercial feasibility of biofuel as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels in the transportation industry.

As one of the world’s largest exporters of ethanol, Brazil is at the epicenter of the growing biofuel revolution.

According to the earlier mentioned Reuters report, almost 90 per cent of new cars on Brazil’s roads run on a mixture of petrol and ethanol. With demand for ethanol projected to grow between 15 to 20 per cent annually, Brazil is a potentially lucrative market for biofuels, solidifying the country’s position as a sustainable model for other countries to follow.

Earlier this year, Shell released ‘Signals & Signposts’ (S&S) – the company’s report into future energy scenarios which takes into account the impact of the recent worldwide financial and economic crises. It complements an earlier report exploring possible future energy scenarios which are likely to take place by 2050.

S&S is highly recommended reading for those curious about the possible repercussions of recent developments in global economics, demographics and geopolitics on the world’s future energy supply and demand (the pdf is available for download at http://bit.ly/idcERq).

The report foresees increased volatility and uncertainty in the global economy, tripling demand for energy by 2050, compared to 2000 levels.

When met recently, Dick Benschop, vice-president for Strategy, Royal Dutch Shell & Country Chair, Shell Netherlands, said that future energy challenges would be framed by three major factors: high population and economic growth especially from Asia and the Middle East; dwindling supply of and less access to ‘easy oil’ (oil which can be obtained relatively easily and cheaply); and concerns about the environment.

He said that it was most troubling to see the growth of environmentally polluting forms of energy such as those generated by coal-fired plants but admitted that it was not realistic to expect people trying to escape poverty to curb their demand for energy needed for development.

Last June, the 16th Asia Oil & Gas Conference acknowledged the growing importance of Asia as a driver of global oil and gas demand, and the increasing significance of unconventional hydrocarbons such as shale gas as a component of the world’s future energy mix.

Conference delegates comprising leading oil and gas players, industry and government representatives, experts, consultants and academics were quite optimistic about the expanding use of natural gas because of its attractiveness as an abundant, cheap energy resource and its status as a ‘cleaner’ fossil fuel as compared to petrol.

Coincidentally while the conference was underway, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a special report titled ‘Are We Entering The Golden Age of Gas’ which examined the prospects of natural gas as a more prominent player in the global energy mix, and its implications for energy security, other fuels and climate change.

However, the report also cautions that while relying more on conventional and unconventional gas to meet energy needs may be better for the environment compared to conventional fuels, it does not do enough to lower carbon emissions towards the ideal target of no more than 2 Celcius increase in global temperatures which requires for lower-carbon energy sources, increased energy efficiency and deployment of new technologies including carbon capture and storage to make it a reality.

Benschop sees the growing role of gas as a bridge between the current status quo and the time when renewable energy such as biofuel becomes commercially viable, feasible, profitable and sustainable.

Biofuels make up around 4 per cent and 3 per cent of transport fuels in Europe and the USA respectively. It caters to approximately 3 per cent of global road transport fuel demand. With new energy policies in Europe and the USA calling for more renewable, lower-carbon fuels, Shell expects global demand to rise to about 9 per cent by 2030.

“By 2050, we estimate that about a third of primary energy will come from renewables,” said Benschop.

As such, the move towards cleaner energy from renewables like solar, hydropower and biofuels seems inevitable, but Benschop cautions that it won’t be smooth sailing as it can take decades to establish and progress current technology to the stage where they can self-sustain and thrive.

Malaysia should take heart from this and vigorously pursue biofuel and renewable energy now in view of the long time it takes for the technology to incubate.

In particular, the palm oil industry which accounts for RM53 billion in gross national income can be an abundant resource for biomass and subsequently biofuel because of the large amount of organic waste resulting from oil palm cultivation and palm oil extraction which has potential for biofuel purposes.

The government has indicated through Pemandu and also through partnership with various academic and business-oriented institutions that this is an area it is willing to explore further.

However, as the S&S report points out, cooperation between the public, industry players, and other stakeholders as well as changes in legislature to support the development of renewable energy is critical. The IEA report also cautions against letting the increased use of gas to derail efforts to develop renewables.

Benschop likened changing the direction of the current energy sector to redirecting a supertanker — it is a process which takes a long time.

“It takes about 30 years for a new form of energy to become matured,” he said, highlighting developments in wind technology as an example.

“It will all have its place, but there are no easy options.”

— by Joanna Yap reporters@theborneopost.com.

Bikernet is beginning to monitor these reports, since we are involved with Advanced Algae Australia, and witnessing rapid and solid progress toward replacing fossil fuels with clean biofuels in the near future. Just this week BP purchased the remaining shares of Bioenergia S.A. for 71 million. The pace of biofuel expansion is picking up for the betterment of everyone on the planet.–Bandit

JOHN AND JILL PARHAM From J&P Cycles:–  Industry Pioneers to Focus on National Motorcycle Museum. Anamosa, IA Sept. 14, 2011 — Powersports industry pioneer John Parham has announced that he and his wife Jill are stepping down as President and Vice President from J&P Cycles. The Parhams have handed over the management of the company they founded in 1979, and will be focusing on family and the National Motorcycle Museum.

“As the motorcycle industry evolves and grows, so must our business,” explains Parham. “Jill and I feel it is time for the next generation to lead J&P Cycles to even greater success.” The family legacy of integrity, customer service and unparalleled passion for the motorcycle industry lives on as son Zach has been named VP and General Manager to head the team of professionals his parents built and assumes day-to-day management of J&P Cycles. John will also continue to serve J&P as a member of the Advisory Board of Directors.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to create and be part of the team that managed this business through all these years,” adds John. “Jill and I have met a lot of great people who have helped us overcome the challenges we faced along the way.” Started as a swap meet vendor from the back of the family’s Ford van, J&P Cycles has grown into one of the largest motorcycle parts and accessories retailers in the world. “Jill and I are so pleased with what our team has built at J&P Cycles, and we are confident in the management team moving forward,” says Parham.

Comfortable that J&P Cycles is operating on a sound business foundation with a solid management team in place, John Parham can now dedicate more of his time to his two greatest passions — his family and the National Motorcycle Museum. Prior to stepping down from day-to-day management at J&P Cycles, John moved the National Motorcycle Museum to a larger facility in Anamosa, Iowa, last year. The new building displays the 325 motorcycles and collectibles in the world class setting and in the manner they deserve. J&P Cycles will continue to support the museum through the annual raffle bike fundraiser and various other promotions.

The next chapter of this success story calls for John and Jill to attend future motorcycle rallies and trade shows, as well as the annual J&P Cycles Open House. “This wonderful industry has been an important part of our lives and our family,” Jill Parham explained. “We wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

PUGS AND HOGS DON’T MIX– Motorcyclist Charged for Animal Cruelty. Monday, September 12, 2011 A New Jersey man thought that he was enjoying a nice rainy ride down route 18 with his pug last week, but it turns out the man was actually subjecting his dog to cruel and unusual treatment.

Gyula Szatmari, 56, was issued a few tickets by New Jersey police after riding on his motorcycle with his pug in his lap. Sgt. Anthony Lena, of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, spotted Szatmari riding down the road with his pug sitting on the gas tank of his motorcycle, and decided to call the police.

Szatmari was pulled over and issued tickets for careless driving and the improper transportation of an animal. Did Szatmari deserve his tickets? It isn’t illegal to carry a dog on a motorcycle, in fact, there is a whole industry dedicated to doggy riding gear. But it is frowned upon to ride with your pet unsecured on your bike, since it could jump off or distract you from paying attention to the road.

Szatmari will appear in court on October 13th to discuss his tickets. Should Szatmari be fined?? Do you ride with your pet?

LETTER FROM SPECTRO OIL BOSS–In our September edition we included an article suggesting that enduro riders should remove the balls on the end of their levers so that they don’t catch on trees and bushes. Almost immediately, Chuck Weir, Off-Road Racing Manager of the American Motorcyclist Association and our contact for the 6-Day ISDE, emailed to point out that the 2011 AMA Rulebook, Section 2.2; C; 7b; page 42, requires control lever ball ends to avoid impaling riders. Ooops. We thank you, Chuck, for being a friend and looking after us, and apologize to all our readers, hoping that not a one of you chopped anything off as a result of our suggestion.

More Good News.
Our Z-Clean Chain Cleaner continues to get rave reviews. Here’s the latest, from Dick Weirbach, team owner from Ottumwa, Iowa: “Z-clean goes on easy, its white color makes it easy to see where you have lube or need lube, it reduces chain and sprocket wear — simply put, it is the best lube we have ever used!!!!!!” Weirbach Racing runs four Honda CRF 450s and one Suzuki 650 on the AMA Pro Flat Track circuit. UNCLE MONKEY MEETS THE EVIL CUSTOMER–You know that real jerk of a customer that you have to deal with. The one you want to reach out and strangle because they are such an asshole. Now imagine that every single one of your customers was that guy. That is the guy police officers have to deal with day in, day out. Anything you do to NOT be that guy will help you in the long run. Over the years I have managed to stay on the right side of the law. In the process I’ve made friends with lots of police officers, so this week I thought I would share some insight.

Throwing a fit, telling them you know so-and-so, telling them that you will have their job does absolutely nothing to help your case. Yes, your dad’s friend, the Governor, will get you out and the charges will be dropped but the longer you spout off, the longer you will sit in a cell. You will be surprised to know that the Governor already knows you are there and he is in no hurry to bail you out so sit down and shut up.

When pulled over for speeding be honest and tell the cop how fast you were going (shave few miles off, if you have too but don’t say 55, when you were doing 95). If you are honest they may let you go with a warning.

When being pulled over turn off the radio, remove your sunglasses, and sit with both hands resting plain sight of the officer. Do not reach for the registration because they will assume you are reaching for a gun. The officer will ask you for your ID when he wants it. Tell them where it is BEFORE you go for it.

Always answer simple ‘Yes, sir – no, sir” Cops carry guns and deserve your respect. Your gun might be bigger, but that cop spends an hour a day, every day at the shooting range.

When in a domestic dispute – first SHUT UP! You will have plenty of time to explain your side of the story. Yelling at the cop or the other person does not help and you can incriminate yourself.

SHUT UP! Stand where you are told to and SHUT UP. Stay where you are told and SHUT UP! This goes DOUBLE for your friends. Yelling, kicking, screaming, threatening will only get you into handcuffs and the back of a squad car.

Calmly and quietly sit on the steps and keep your hands where they can be seen. When the cop is done with the other person he will talk to you. The calmer you are, the more respectful you are, the less likely you are to go to jail. Personally, I’ve seen innocent people hauled away to jail ranting and raving while the guilty are left sitting on the stoop laughing.

Be honest because the truth will set you free and co-operating will go a long way. Tell them about that roach in your pocket, tell them about that length of pipe you keep beside the seat. They are going to find it anyway. You don’t have to incriminate yourself, but supply information.

If you are a professional criminal and get caught; suck it up and accept it as part of doing business. If you were a better criminal the cops wouldn’t have caught you anyway. You only have yourself to blame. If you can’t do the time – don’t do the crime.

Yes, there are real criminals to be caught and they have you are pulled over here and now because you broke the law.

In the end be respectful, do as you are asked and remember your number one right, is the right to be silent. Use it

MONGOL Ex-biker gang boss gets 14 years.  Associated Press  The AP learned of the sentence Tuesday when U.S. District Judge Otis Wright relayed the information through federal prosecutors after the news organization asked about Ruben “Doc” Cavazos’ sentencing. The hearing was closed to the public and it appears, according to the court docket, that the public and media weren’t notified in advance. When federal agents arrested dozens of members of the notorious motorcycle gang, they proudly displayed seized rifles, handguns, chrome-covered Harley-Davidson choppers and leather vests adorned with the club’s insignia.

Nearly three years later, it’s been difficult to find out what happened to guys with nicknames like “Reaper,” “Risky” and “Peligroso” in the legal system. Nine of those charged with racketeering conspiracy had their plea agreements and sentencing records sealed and Cavazos, the gang’s former national president, was sentenced last Thursday.

Only after repeated prodding by The Associated Press to reveal the sentence did U.S. District Judge Otis Wright relay Tuesday via federal prosecutors that he sent Cavazos to prison for 14 years. No other details were given. An AP reporter made repeated attempts over the past couple of months to find out when Cavazos was scheduled to be sentenced but was unsuccessful. Wright’s Sept. 8 calendar mentioned two matters that were under seal and neither listed the defendant’s name nor the case number. While sealed plea agreements are the norm – often to protect those who have cooperated with authorities – keeping the sentence and the hearing confidential is highly unusual, several legal experts told AP. “I don’t know of any authority that would allow the court to keep that information from being part of the public record,” said Michael Brennan, a law professor at the University of Southern California. “What the guy was sentenced to doesn’t involve issues of confidentiality. I think the public is entitled to a number.”

Brennan said Cavazos’ 14-year sentence indicates he probably gave valuable information about the Mongols to federal prosecutors that will allow him to be released from custody eventually. “This is a deal that he obviously earned,” Brennan said. “The government doesn’t give anything away.”

OPEN LETTER TO H-D DEALERSHIP– Harley Davidson Customer Service

I am writing this letter to let Harley-Davidson know about the exceptional customer service I recently received while at Sturgis 2011. I purchased my first bike, 2011 Superlow last year in September and this was my first time to Sturgis.

I had only been out there a couple days when I started to notice my throttle was sticking. I thought maybe the throttle stop got bumped and thought, well I will adjust it when we get back to the house, but before I got home while riding through Spearfish Canyon the throttle would not automatically return.

Being a new rider and this being a new bike, I was nervous and upset. I pulled over to a gas station and inspected my bike and saw that the return throttle cable has come completely out of the throttle body. I borrowed some needle nose pliers and proceeded to stick it back in, hoping that would mend it until I could get to a Harley Dealership. It was a bandaid fix, and my throttle control was completely out of whack with tons of play in it.

It was too late to call a dealer when I got back that evening, so first thing the next morning I searched my touring handbook and was saddened to find out that there were only two dealerships that offered service near me. One was in Rapid City, SD and the other in Sundance, WY.

I called Rapid City first, being they were a bigger dealership. When I called I got a message stating, “Due to Sturgis we are unable to answer the phone, if you need a tow call this number, if you need rentals call this number,” which was not what I wanted to hear, being 1000 miles from home with a bike problem. Rapid City was roughly 50 miles from where I was and I was not about to ride the bike with a messed up throttle to a dealer who couldn’t answer the phone and guarantee me they could fix it.

I then proceeded to call Deluxe Harley in Sundance, WY as they were only 35 miles away. I was shocked when someone answered the phone. I mean an actual live person. I asked for service, got the service manager and told him my problem and he said, “Bring it out!” He proceeded to say they would fix it while I waited.

I immediately jumped on my bike and rode straight there. I pulled up and they took my info, I asked about a nearby bar.  He pointed around the corner. I thought for sure it was going to be awhile because there were two bikes on the lift and one in line with brake problems.

I walked around the corner with my guy, ordered a Bloody Mary got about half way through and my guy was getting ready to order another beer and I said let me go check on the bike and see how long it will be, because if it was going to be a few hours, I would just jumped on the back of his bike and not wasted the day. I walked around the corner and my bike was parked out front. I went in and the service manager said, “all finished.” I was like your joking right. He said nope. Evidently, I had a lot of slack in the cable and it came out. I was so pleased to find out it wasn’t a big job.

After all of this, I felt the need to tell the owner, who was actually there that day how happy I was. I waited to speak with him, and complemented him on his service and how nice his store was. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and my mom took me to a small Harley shop (Molenar’s, Hammond, IN) in my hometown, which is not there anymore.

He said he and his wife own it and it is a seasonal shop. I proceeded to buy a shirt, a quart of oil, and windshield cleaner. I asked him who does his art work for his shirts because they had some of the nicest looking clothes and designs that I have seen at any Harley shop and I have been to quite a few

I am writing this letter to let Harley know that this man and his shop needs to be recognized. In this day and age with computerized automated phone systems, and poor customer service, during a huge bike rally to get this kind of service is EXCEPTIONAL! When I got back to out house, I told everyone staying there, and have continued to tell people since I have gotten home.

I will definitely revisit his shop next year! And continue to tell people about it. This is definite proof that Harley should keep those little shops around, everyone likes to feel special, and feel at home even when away.

Sincerely,

Lisa Dibley

THINGS HAVE CHANGED–Things have changed. I have always made it a practice to stop for any biker who is broken down on the side of the road. I carry a loading ramp along with two sets of tie downs in the bed of my truck just in case.

If I am on my bike and come across a stranded biker, I always stop and offer help.
Last Friday night I was riding my Springer Softail to downtown Charlotte. As I entered the city, a loud pop went off, sounded like a gun-shot. My trusty Springer was running on one cylinder. I pulled over and my rear spark plug had blown out of the rear head. Never has this happened before. My Springer is a 1991 and I have owned it since it was new.

I thought maybe the threads in the rear head were gone. I tried tightening the spark plug by hand but I could not get it tight enough. I did not have a wrench or deep socket with me.
I sat there on the side of the road and counted 12 bikes pass me by. I don’t call them bikers, a biker would have stopped. THAT IS THE CODE! None of the 12 even slowed down. I guess I was invisible.

Finally I made a call to my buddy, Josh and he showed up with the socket I needed. The threads were not stripped on the rear head, I guess the spark plug was not tight and just worked itself free.
What bothered me about this little breakdown was not my bike leaving me on the side of the road, but the 12 riders who passed me! Not a glance, not a word they just kept riding.

I guess I am getting old and set in my ways and but I believe in the CODE. I guess nowadays the CODE only goes for us who have been around for a good while. Evidently these riders have never heard of “BROTHERHOOD?”

Will I continue to stop and offer help to a broken down biker? I always have and always will!

MICHELIN TO RELEASE NEW RUBBER FOR THE CRUISER/CUSTOM MARKET AT V-TWIN SHOW IN CINCY–
This month Micheline is launching their new Commander II which the French company claims to deliver unrivalled tyre life.

Independent tests carried out in the United States using a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic showed that a rear Michelin Commander II is capable of covering up to 40,000 kilometres*. Nearly twice the distance covered by its direct competitors claim Michelin, while the longevity of the front tyre is even greater.

Michelin also claim the Commander II creates a new standard with regard to durability, yet without compromising wet weather grip, manoeuvrability or stability.

This performance balance provides yet another eloquent illustration of Michelin’s research and development philosophy: no performance gain to be achieved to the detriment of another.

In response to the major concern of custom motorcycle riders – tyre life, notably at the rear – the engineers at the Michelin Technology Centre at Ladoux, near Clermont-Ferrand (France), have developed a new rubber compound to extend the life of the tyre.

The exclusive architecture of the Michelin Commander II brings both manoeuvrability and stability.

The tyre’s more rigid, high-density carcass improves manoeuvrability, while the aramid fibre crown ply of the rear tyre enhances resistance and lightness for impeccable stability, even at high speeds.

Last but not least, the numerous longitudinal grooves of the new tyre’s tread pattern optimise water dispersal for outstanding wet weather grip.

Thirteen sizes will be available from September 2011, while two other sizes will be released at the beginning of next year at the V-Twin Show in Cincinnati.

BIKERNET MILITARY CORRESPONDENT SNEAKS INTO YUMA MARINE BASE–Entering a classroom at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station,) Yuma , a female Marine Captain encountered a clearly apathetic audience. She was selected to provide a full hour’s instruction on Iraqi electronic warfare capabilities to 150 Marine aviators who showed by their body language deep skepticism about her ability to teach war fighting skills to an all-male class.

She began by noting that her voice had just been tested to see if it was suitable for some new cockpit recorder messages for Marine aircraft. She said that unfortunately she had not been selected to be the new “Bitching Betty.” However, she said it was only fair to warn the audience the reason given for her non-selection was that an analysis of her voice pattern revealed that her particular voice had a tendency to lull to sleep any male homosexual within earshot.

The assembled officers shot upright in their chairs. 150 pairs of eyes were wide open and locked on her and stayed that way for the rest of the period.

NEW BIKE IN THE STURGIS MUSEUM FROM OCC–The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is excited about the newest addition to its collection of motorcycles – the BIC® Flex 4® Chopper designed and built by Orange County Choppers. The bike, built in 2010, sports an S & S 100” motor, Baker 6-speed transmission, and OCC custom wheels. The motorcycle was built to help BIC promote its Flex 4 razor and to bring attention to the BIC 4 Good program that benefits charities around the nation.

“The BIC Flex 4 Chopper is a great addition to the collection at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the museum. “Many of the motorcycles on display in the museum are antiques that serve to teach visitors about the history of motorcycling. This chopper adds to the collection in a whole new way – giving museum visitors a taste of custom building.”

The BIC Flex 4 Chopper was presented to BIC by Paul Tuetel, Senior of Orange County Choppers in January. The bike was displayed during a number of events at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally before making its home at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

Located on the corner of Main Street & Junction Avenue in downtown Sturgis, South Dakota, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of motorcycling, honor those who have made a positive and significant impact on the sport and lifestyle, and pay tribute to the heritage of the Sturgis Rally.

The museum houses a collection of rare and vintage motorcycles dating back to 1909 as well as a wide variety of motorcycle memorabilia and historical information.

BIKER LOOKING TO MAKE HIS DREAM COME TRUE-– Hello my name is Jesse P. Welcom. I am attending school at MMI ( Motorcycle Mechanic Institute ) in Orlando, Florida. I have a great passion and love for motorcycles. The biggest passion of mine is furthering my education, to gain a wealth of knowledge and growth in my up and coming career and life experience. I have worked in fields that left me feeling like I have needed more out of the job.

At this point why not go after a dream and a goal. Therefore I have returned back to school to go after my dream. The goal that I have set for myself is to hold the highest (GPA) and receive as many (AWARDS) that I can earn. I would like to achieve my GOALS and DREAMS to move forward in my life, instead of standing still in my life. So in short, I feel that if I stick to my GOALS this is a great start to further my career and better yet my LIFE.
If your company has any SCHOLARSHIPS or any type of HELPING aids, this would be put to the best use to HELP someone go for there DREAMS. Evey little can help in this hard times upon us. Thank you for your time.

— Jesse P. Welcome

THE ART OF KRYLON JOHN–In the early 90s it was David Mann that told me I could write. I was a custom painter doing mostly bikes at that time.

The only thing I had ever written was a brief article in Biker about a Harley night at Angelo’s in Anaheim, and the product descriptions in Rat Fuk Products mail order catalog.

My third assignment came when Jamie O’Shea at Juxtapoz magazine called and told me Robert Williams wanted a cover story on David Mann’s surreal works for Juxtapoz. I asked Jamie if he was sure they wanted me to write it, and he said David told them he’d only agree to doing a story if I wrote it.

I flew all the way from LA to KCMO to do an interview with David, and he didn’t have a whole lot to say. He told me he was a painter, and that was how he expressed himself. If he had a bunch to say, then he would have been a writer. Holy shit I said to Dave, now what are going to do? David cracked open a fifth of Jack Daniels, got down a big book he had on surrealisim from his bookcase, and we started to brainstorm.

I’ve been a magazine editor five times since then, and often thought that was all I ever wanted to do. Then last month an impulse came out of nowhere. (August 2011). I wandered out into my garage and opened up my paint cabinet. I loaded my gun with Auto Air Colors waterborne paint, and didn’t stop blasting until I had created 12 works.

I don’t call it art, its just custom paint under glass. It’s amazing how much fun this stuff is to do. I work until 2AM, and then get back up at 6AM, and start all over again. For anyone that would like to try, I’ll be back with a tech story on how I do these paintings at a later date. Meanwhile I better not quit my day job, so I’m going to knock out an Easyriders story that’s due.
