BIKE WEEK BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for March 5th, 2020

Hey,

I slept in, and now I need to hustle. The trash truck is coming, the bookkeeper will arrive and shit always happens fast on Thursdays.

Tomorrow, I am going to haul the torpedo body to Chris Morrison for paint. I adjusted the shocks and started to work with Charles Altmann regarding our Twin Cam electronic ignition.

I spoke to Dennis Manning about Bonneville and he still needs a solid sponsor for the number 7 streamliner. You can find him on Facebook. He’s determined to break the motorcycle world land speed record. Valerie Thompson will be the pilot. They can do the job and maybe cross the 400 mph marker.

Here we go. Let’s hit the news:

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

**JUST 2,000 miles** Better than ‘like new’. Beautiful blacked out 114″

Harley-Davidson revamped its Street Glide Special yet again for the 2019 model year in an effort to keep it “special.? First, the factory stuffed the largest engine into the frame. Then it boosted the infotainment potential with the new Boom! Box GTS system.

The Special just exudes all that is badass about baggers. It starts with the 19-inch front wheel and naked fender down low and the chopped-down smoked windshield up top. Add the blackout treatment that ties right into the custom culture, and you have a solid start on a proper boulevard bruiser. The relatively new Batwing fairing provides better penetration and there is so much more. Overall, I’d put it as one of the best-looking in the world.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT:

This bike is the ultimate in all three riding worlds, beauty, performance and comfort. Vivid Black paint with raised tank logo is of course pristine with just 2,000 miles. Vivid Black tank strap with carbon fiber face. Most everything in Vivid Black including 14″ Lindby style bar that does not block the instrumentation, Performance Machine grips, vivid black levers, complete fork, on beautiful Talon wheels.

ABS and black exhaust. Only chrome are push-rod tubes, tappet blocks and rocker cover bands. Vivid black air filter with carbon fiber 114 logo, cam / horn covers with H-D logos and derby cover with 114. LED or daymaker lighting all around including fender tri-line and license plate light. 2-up seat, deep-scoop saddle that laden, slings the rider’s butt at a low 26.1-inches high, streamliner floorboards, passenger pegs and brake pedal. Tires have only 2,000 miles on them. There is so much more to this bike, it is a must to come in and see it yourself!

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM Hall of Fame Highlights–Class of 2020

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is featuring Hall of Fame Highlights of this year’s outstanding new group of inductees. Here is a glimpse at what they had to say. For the full story join us at the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony (tickets available below). Congratulations and welcome Jody Perewitz.

*Please note: Hall of Fame Highlights will be published as we receive them from the Inductees. We look forward to sharing information about all of our Inductees in the weeks and months to come.

It is no surprise that Jody Perewitz is known for riding and racing motorcycles. She grew up with motorcycles. It has become second nature for her; she eats, sleeps and breathes two wheels. As a child, her family vacations were always based around motorcycles. It’s all her family does.

Today Jody is one of the most recognizable women in the motorcycle industry. Jody has paved her own way into history by becoming the first woman to ever jockey an American V-Twin powered motorcycle into the record books, at well over 200 MPH. She currently holds 16 land speed records, one of which is a world record.

When asked what it means to be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, Jody responded, “It is truly an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I hope to bring so much more to the Museum and Hall of Fame.”

FROM THE COBRA TEAM– WHAT ABOUT THE RACKS?
We have three rack options. A tube steel rack, a laser-cut and formed solid rack.

Both of these are options for the sissy bar. The third rack is offered for some models as a stand alone unit.

OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF DRIVING– Have you ever driven with a new driver, especially one who is clearly afraid? When you know the person operating a vehicle is anything less than confident, you may find yourself afraid as well. While this fear eventually passes for some, others are plagued by a fear of the road well beyond the duration of a driver’s education course.

Why is this significant?

Simply put, a scared driver is an unsafe driver. While many new drivers are excited to get their licenses, the thought of actually getting on the road can be terrifying for others. Graduated driver licenses (GDLs) are a requirement for 15- to 18-year-old drivers in many states. But if this fear persists even after practicing with an experienced driver, things can be done to overcome – or help another driver overcome – a fear of driving!

Six Ways to Overcome a Fear of Driving:
Don’t drive alone. Sometimes people simply feel more confident when another person is with them in the vehicle. New teenage drivers are typically required to drive with an experienced driver for a time when they first get their license. But if those feelings persist, simply driving with another person (licensed or not) may help calm nerves.

Take at least one (or more) driver’s training course. New drivers are typically afraid they will be involved in a car accident. Driver’s education training is required for minors to receive a license. As an adult, the same courses aren’t typically required, but this doesn’t mean they are not beneficial. Any driver may take additional driving training courses!

Drive during the day. According to Forbes, 49 percent of fatal crashes occur at night. Night driving is more difficult because your vision is limited and conditions are often quite different than during the day. If this causes anxiety, try to avoid night driving until your skills sharpen.

Keep driving even, and especially, after an accident. If you have a poor experience behind the wheel, get back out there. Unless you are willing to resign yourself to alternative transportation forever, it’s very important to make sure that you have an up-to-date driver’s license and that you stay in practice. You never know if you are going to have to drive somewhere in an emergency.

Don’t dread the highway. If you are terrified of the highway, start by driving on lesser-used highways, and not multilane highways. But this is a fear all drivers must overcome. Simply remain in the right lane, maintain the flow of traffic and stay calm.

Calm yourself. Not able to quiet your nerves? Try some old-fashioned relaxation techniques. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted, but some find that music can help calm fears, and focus on your breathing.

The freedom granted by driving is a privilege and one that you should enjoy! Your confidence while driving is critical to the safety of everyone on the road. In the event that you are injured by a new driver you should speak with the experienced car accident attorneys at Hupy and Abraham. Contact us online or call us directly at 800-800-5678.

QUESTIONS REGARDING NEW H-D BOSS– Read this on his bio at wikipedia:

“In 2010, Zeitz co-wrote and published Prayer, Profit and Principles – Monk and Manager in dialogue with Anselm Grün, a Benedictine monk. LATEST FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–Former UN Climate Chief Christiana Figueres: Slower economic growth from coronavirus ‘may be good for climate’ – ‘There is less trade, less travel, less commerce’

By: Marc Morano

Former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres has declared that the coronavirus “may be good for climate” since it may cause a global recession and thus lower emissions.

Figures, who was a key figure crafting the 2015 UN Paris climate pact, also warned that the world should expect more disease outbreaks “if we continue to deny, delude and delay on climate change.” Figueres appeared on the UK’s Channel 4 on March 2, with host Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Channel 4’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked Figueres: “Is there any sense that this could be self-controlling — that as we see economic growth possibly slowing down around the world, because of coronavirus — that’s actually good for the climate?”

Christiana Figueres replied: “Well, that is, ironically, of course, the other side of this — right? It may be good for climate. But I think — because there is less trade, there’s less travel, there’s less commerce.”

This is not the first time that Figueres has called for controlling economic growth. See: Flashback: UN climate chief Christiana Figueres seeks ‘centralized transformation’ that is ‘going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different’ – “The Industrial Revolution was also a transformation, but it wasn’t a guided transformation from a centralized policy perspective. This is a centralized transformation that is taking place because governments have decided that they need to listen to science. So it’s a very, very different transformation and one that is going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different.”

Climate Depot Note: Figueres is confronted with her advocacy of UN economic “centralized transformation” in the new climate skeptic documentary Climate Hustle 2 coming to over 700 theatres on April 21, 2020.

See:It’s Coming! Watch: Actor Kevin Sorbo discusses new skeptical documentary Climate Hustle 2 on Huckabee TV

Figueres also praised China for its government structure. UN climate chief Christiana Figueres lamented U.S. democracy as ‘very detrimental’ – Sought ‘centralized transformation’ – Lauded one-party ruled China for ‘doing it right’ on climate

Many other climate campaigners have also called for reduced economic growth to fight “global warming.” See:Warmist Prof. Alice Bows-Larkin calls for ‘planned recessions’ to fight ‘global warming’: ‘Economic growth needs to be exchanged’ for ‘planned austerity’ – ‘Whole system change’

& Flashback: Warmist Kevin Anderson, who advocates ‘planned recessions’ and cut back on his showering, tells UN climate summit: ‘Nations should give up growth obsession’

Figueres also used the coronavirus as an opportunity to plug the UN’s campaign to reduce and stop meat-eating around the world. “If we continue to eat animals, we will actually be poisoning ourselves and being the genesis new diseases that we have not seen before,” Figueres explained. [See:‘Food Police’ –UN Meat report: UN seeks ‘massive expansion of the UN’s regulatory power…lifestyle controls’]

Figueres has also advocated that meat-eaters should be banished, treated ‘the same way that smokers are treated”

NEW HARLEY ELECTRIC LOGOS– By all intents and purposes, Harley-Davidson became the first established bike builder to go down the electrification path not long ago. It started with the LiveWire electric motorcycle, moved to unveil a bunch of ebicycles, and there seems to be no stopping its plans for this segment.

Sure, the LiveWire didn’t turn out to be the hit Harley was hoping for, at least for now, and it was even plagued by a production freeze caused by a charging issue. But that doesn’t mean the Americans will be stopped in their tracks by these minor setbacks.

In a filing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) dated March 3, 2020, Harley has registered a trademark captioned ”electric Bicycles and structural parts therefor; electric motorcycles and structural parts therefor.”

When it pulled the wraps off the LiveWire and the subsequent ebicycles, the company did not say whether this new line of products will be marketed with a different logo, or under a different trademark.

Filing for a trademark is something that happens often in the industry, but that doesn’t mean all ideas get to be used. If this one gets deployed, it’s unclear whether it will be used on electric motorcycles, ebikes, both or not at all.

Aside for this design, drawn as a lighting bolt making its way through a double circle with Harley-Davidson written inside, Motorcycle reports another one being filed with EUIPO, this time a shield inside which the letter HD are over-imposed over the same lighting design.

SALT TORPEDO REPORT–We heard a pop while testing the Torpedo in the Desert. Micah conclude that it was an electric issue, so I reached out to Charles Altmann of Altmann electronic ignitions in Germany.

Their systems can take a Twin cam EFI engine and turn it into carbureted masterpiece. Here’s what he asked me to check:

Is the crank-sensor wire (red-black) twisted all the way and does not run
parallel to other wiring?

Are you using suppressed sparkplugs?

Not sure if this really is electrical .. how do the plugs read?

Can I have some pics of your installation, and bike?

Which carb, which air-filter?

Thanks, Charles 🙂

phone: +49-212-233-7039

Here’s the follow-up report from Charles (I sent him photos of everything he requested):

Bandit: Let’s see how I did. The wires from the Crank-sensor may not be twisted. They
were completely insulated from the factory.

Charles: That’s okay, looks good on the pic.

Bandit: Here’s a shot of the plugs. They are 6R12PP from HD.

Charles: That’s okay.

Bandit: I have included shots of the carb, exhaust, your ignition system (which is set
at 1-1-1), and the coil.

Let me know if you spot anything. Your piece is foam insulated, while setting
on the top motor-mount.

Charles: Please include a complete left side shot of engine, it looks, as if the
ignition wires cross the sensor cable, which would be a potential cause of
trouble ..

I fulfilled my last request and am waiting for a response. I’ve moved the position of a couple of wires and I’ll bet cured the problem. Another test coming up.—Bandit

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPEAKS TO DECLINING BIKE SALES
The reasons for the slump in sales at HD are not President Trump’s fault (contrary to what all contrarians/etc. would have you believe)…

Apparently the Baby-Boomers all have motorcycles. Generation X is only buying a few, and the next generation isn’t buying any at all.

A recent study was done to find out why Millennials don’t ride motorcycles:

1. Pants won’t pull up far enough for them to straddle the seat.
2. Can’t get their phone to their ear with a helmet on.
3. Can’t use 2 hands to eat while driving.
4. They don’t get a trophy and a recognition plaque just for buying one.
5. Don’t have enough muscle to hold the bike up when stopped.
6. Might have a bug hit them in the face and then they would need emergency care.
7. Motorcycles don’t have air conditioning.
8. They can’t afford one because they spent 12 years in college trying to get a degree in Humanities, Social Studies or Gender Studies for which no jobs are available.
9. They are allergic to fresh air.
10. Their pajamas get caught on the exhaust pipes.
11. They might get their hands dirty checking the oil.
12. The handle bars have buttons and levers and cannot be controlled by touch-screen.
13. You have to shift manually and use something called a clutch.
14. It’s too hard to take selfies while riding.
15. They don’t come with training wheels like their bicycles did.
16. Motorcycles don’t have power steering or power brakes.
17. Their nose ring interferes with the face shield.
18. They would have to use leg muscle to back up.
19. When they stop, a light breeze might blow exhaust in their face.
20. It could rain on them and expose them to non-soft water.
21. It might scare their therapy dog, and then the dog would need therapy.
22. Can’t get the motorcycle down the basement stairs of their parent’s home.

SLINGSHOT ROAD TEST COMING UP–
Coming off of a launch earlier this year, Slingshot – the bold three-wheeled roadster – is returning to Daytona Bike Week with the all-new 2020 lineup.

The totally redesigned Slingshot features an all-new AutoDrive transmission so non-stick shift drivers can now enjoy the truly unique driving experience. Combined with a new Polaris ProStar 2.0L engine and a completely redesigned interior and cockpit, it’s something to see…and drive.

Slingshot is taking to the streets and will be offering attendees the opportunity to test drive the 2020 models at Daytona International Speedway. I can honestly tell you the new Slingshot is a blast and I would really encourage you to take a look at it. There’s nothing like it on the road and it definitely turns heads.

Are you planning on covering Bike Week? If so, would love to see if you’d be interested in coming out to see the latest models, get some seat time and chat about the latest from the brand. Attached is the press kit with more info on the 2020 lineup.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

This is a tough one. We would love to road test the new Slingshot, but unfortunately Polaris industries can’t afford to advertise on Bikernet and support our starving contributors ($165 a month). THIS JUST IN FROM ANOTHER UNKNOWN WHISTLEBLOWER–
“I think we all remember when our floundered fathers decomposed the Dereliction of incandescence…….. and they said that we are devoured by our Creator of unamiable rights………As our four fathers said at the outset of our infantile nation….’when in the coarseness of Humana events… and these times that are ties that bind our souls…..that we have been bowed by our Creator of Amittyville rights,’ you know the thing, ’till death do us part.’…..because as Abraham Leaking said at the onslaught of the Sybil Wars: ‘foreskin and seven beers ago we hold these troops to be sonambulant.’ Nothing has made change for us since then.

The Chinese have a tradition called the Lunatic New Year. John Wessley Hardin, our fifth President, said about that same new year ‘These are the New York Times that try our solstice…. so that we might have life, lobotomies, and the pursuit of happy feet.’ As your presiding President I will vow to swear to promise to agree to uphold the American Standard and Universal Rundle of power in abeyance and domestic tranquilty to the bread and butterment of us all. So, help me Zod.

Thank you and remember to vote for me in your prayers. And finally to my son Hunter S Thompson I want to say, your brother Bo Derek, who of the two of you will always be my favorite if for no other reason that he died first and foremost….to you Hunter I want to say pay no attention to the neighbors and the gay-sayers. Because as my greatly-departed friend Two-Pack Secure used to say ‘Yo yo yo, let’s go go go, ya know ya know ya know – ah-ite.’ He was rappin’ then as they say. They used to be tappin’ the negroes, great tap dancers, I think you all know that.

But the festered-inquests and the sasquatch and the fatted calves in Washingmachine DC, they made our sidewalks unsafe for the homely! We have a problem of homelyness in America! So, they could not tap there. So now they rap. We took dancing away from the negroes and now they have only their voices to cry out to us for sublimity. So always remember that, Hunter. Keep painting your paintings of abcraption-style paintings because as Jesse Jackson Pollock used to say ‘What even is this anyway.’ Thank you. And God bless us everyone, to quote the words of Tiny Dancer in my hand. Amen.”

MEMO FROM THE HEARTLAND INSTITUTE–WaPo showcases the “Anti-Greta” Thunberg

In an interesting turn of events, the Washington Post has done a front-page feature on Naomi Seibt, a German climate skeptic and YouTuber that WaPo describes as “… 19-year-old German who, like Greta, is blond, eloquent and European.”

Some excerpts:

But Naomi denounces “climate alarmism,” calls climate consciousness “a despicably anti-human ideology,” and has even deployed Greta’s now famous “How dare you?” line to take on the mainstream German media.

“She’s a fantastic voice for free markets and for climate realism,” said James Taylor, director of the Arthur B. Robinson Center for Climate and Environmental Policy at the Heartland Institute, an influential libertarian think tank in suburban Chicago that has the ear of the Trump administration.

Later this week, Naomi is set to make her American debut at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, a high-profile annual gathering just outside Washington of right-leaning activists.

Aussie Dave Captures Motorcycle Track Record with New, Larger Pirelli DIABLO Superbike Slicks in Las Vegas–DIABLO Superbike 125/70-17 Front and 200/65-17 Rear Sizes Available Now

Pirelli Tire North America congratulates David Anthony on capturing the brand’s first absolute motorcycle track record bounty of 2020. “Aussie Dave” set the new track record on the Las Vegas Classic Circuit at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during the WERA West racing series.

The achievement came while using Pirelli’s new, larger DIABLO™ Superbike slick sizes, which have been derived from Pirelli’s involvement as the tire supplier for the FIM MOTUL World Superbike Championship.

“We’re seeing lap times drop across the country with our new sizing in the DIABLO™ Superbike slicks,” said Oscar Solis, road racing manager, Pirelli. “Aussie Dave managed to crush his previous track record by nearly a half second, which is very impressive. Although he was competing on a different bike, it’s refreshing to know that the tires are up for the challenge and ready to perform at the highest level of racing.”

Anthony’s new lap record of 1:14.348 was set during the Formula One Expert race, topping his own track record of 1:14.836 that he set last year. Anthony’s GSX-R1000 motorcycle was equipped with Pirelli’s DIABLO™ Superbike 125/70-17 SC1 front and 200/65-17 SC0 rear slicks.

“The consistent speed I was able to lay down this weekend was impressive,” said Anthony. “The new Pirelli slick sizes have exceeded my expectations that I had set for them, allowing me to continue improving myself and lap times on the racetrack. It’s really cool to see Pirelli setting the industry standard by continuously innovating their products even when they are already on top.”

THE FREEDOM TO PUMP GAS
FEBRUARY 26, 2020
By Daniel Sutter
Illinois state representative Camille Lilly recently sponsored a bill to restrict self-service gasoline stations. Would creating jobs for gas station attendants be good economics?

Illinois state representative Camille Lilly recently sponsored a bill to restrict self-service gasoline stations. New Jersey and Oregon already ban self-service gas, although Oregon exempts rural counties. Would creating jobs for gas station attendants be good economics?

There are many tasks we can either do ourselves or pay to have done. Consider food preparation. We can buy and cook food, pay someone to prepare food in our house, purchase cooked food from a restaurant, or consume a meal at a restaurant.

Two factors affect our food preparation choices. First, hiring someone allows the use of specialized knowledge. A chef has likely been to culinary school, while a cook has training and experience. Of course, we probably won’t be hiring Emeril Lagasse to cook for us, and cooking at fast food restaurants does not involve great culinary talent. Still, we can potentially hire skill we do not possess.

Second, having someone cook changes our cost. Cooking for ourselves takes our time, which is valuable. But we must pay someone to cook for us, whether at to a restaurant or a chef willing to come to our house.

To succeed in hiring someone, we will want potential workers to find our position desirable. Many people aspire to be chefs and have their own cooking show; many fewer want a career flipping burgers. How much we enjoy cooking ourselves is also relevant.

Similar factors affect the pumping of gas. Although little expertise is involved, carelessness can cause spills and fire risk. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3,000 vehicle fires at gas stations caused an average one death and $8 million in damage annually between 2004 and 2008. Properly trained and attentive attendants could prevent some of these fires. A 46 percent decline in gas station fires since 1980 demonstrates that self-service has not fueled a crisis.

The price of gas will have to increase to pay attendants, and even more if states pass a $15 per hour minimum wage. Stations will need attendants on duty whenever open, and attendants will often be idle. Gas stations with lots of pumps will need to hire several attendants to use all the pumps simultaneously. Delays waiting for an attendant will increase our time cost of filling up.

We already know how most consumers weigh the inconvenience of pumping gas versus the costs of attendants. Full-service gas stations are not prohibited but almost all have been driven out of business. Drivers preferred the convenience and savings of self-service, even before the advent of pay-at-the-pump technology in the 1980s.

But wouldn’t jobs for attendants boost the economy? Illinois’ Representative Lilly thinks so. Desirability matters when considering creating or bringing back a class of jobs. How many people really want to pump gas all day in the snow and cold of Illinois or the heat of Alabama?

More significantly, labor is a scarce resource. Our economy is more prosperous when we produce goods and services using less labor. Pumping gas involves substituting our unpaid labor for paid attendants. Still, the money drivers save pumping their own gas will be spent on other things, perhaps food at convenience stores. This spending then creates jobs and provides things people value more.

Americans might have changed since the 1970s when self-service conquered the market. Today many Americans would not try changing a tire, preferring to wait on and pay for roadside assistance. Podcaster Adam Corolla has humorously decried this trend. As an economist, I try to avoid judging the choices people make.

If people no longer want to pump their own gas, entrepreneurs can open new full-service gas stations. Or think outside the box and offer fuel-delivery service like the Birmingham startup company FuelFox. Balancing cost and convenience challenges all of us. The freedom to pump our own gas is one part of a prosperity-enhancing balancing.

MARCH MOTORCYCLE LEGISLATION FROM THE AMA– National and Regional News

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.) introduced S. 3249, the Motorcyclist Advisory Council Reauthorization Act, which would refine the membership seats of the federal Motorcyclist Advisory Council to ensure more national motorcycle organizations are represented and authorizes the council for six years.

The AMA worked closely with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and Harley-Davidson Motor Co. on the legislation, which is the companion bill to H.R. 5234 introduced in late November. S. 3249 would require the MAC to include five highway engineering experts from state or local governments, one state or local traffic safety engineer who is a motorcyclist, one roadway safety data expert on crash testing and analysis and one representative from each of the following groups: a national association of state transportation officials, a national motorcyclist foundation, a national motorcyclist association, a national motorcycle manufacturing association and a national safety organization.

The current MAC, chaired by Mike Sayre-AMA government relations manager for on-highway issues-was authorized in 2015 and is finalizing its report to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The MAC advises the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the administrator of the Federal Highway Administration on transportation issues of concern to motorcyclists, including barrier design; road design, construction, and maintenance practices; and the architecture and implementation of intelligent transportation system technologies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted Nuro’s request for a temporary exemption from some low-speed vehicle standard requirements, so the company can test its electric delivery vehicle, the “R2.”

This exemption marks the first time the U.S. government has approved a company’s request to deploy a vehicle that does not meet the standards for cars and trucks operated by humans.

Unlike a conventional low-speed vehicle, the R2 is designed to have no human occupant and operates exclusively using an automated driving system. Nuro will be permitted to produce and deploy no more than 5,000 R2 vehicles during the two-year exemption period, and NHTSA will closely monitor Nuro’s operations during and after that time. Nuro intends to operate these vehicles as part of a local delivery service for restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses.

The AMA opposes the use of public roadways for testing driverless vehicles-even low-speed delivery vehicles-because it increases the risk to motorcyclists and other road users.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Navy has released its final environmental impact statement for the planned expansion of the Fallon Range Training Complex in Nevada, making it available online. The complex is a training area made up of 12,256 square nautical miles of airspace and about 232,000 acres of Navy-managed land. The facility modernization will include:
Renewal of the Navy’s current public land withdrawal

Land range expansion through the additional withdrawal of public lands and the acquisition of nonfederal land
Airspace expansion and modernization
Upgrades to range infrastructure.

The AMA submitted comments on the draft EIS in January, conditionally supporting Alternative 3 as the least disruptive to continued OHV use. However, the AMA also supported local riders, calling for reconnection of cherry-stemmed routes created by the Alternative 3 as originally drafted, and the creation of a special recreation area, codifying OHV use as legitimate, outside the expansion area.

The AMA was encouraged by the Navy’s agreement to continue the annual “Vegas to Reno” race and, possibly, other competition events near three sections of the training area. Also, taking the Sand Springs Range and Fairview Peak-the latter having many roads and OHV trails and the popular earthquake fault destination-out of the training area was a positive for the OHV community.”

State News

TRACY, Calif. – Thirty-seven acres at the east end of the Carnegie SVRA reopened to off-highway vehicle recreation on Jan. 30. The area includes the 4×4 Play Area, Trials Bike area, and Motocross Practice Track. In January of 2019, this part of the park was closed due to litigation.

Conclusion of the suit ends the closure of this popular part of the park and allows for recreation in these areas. The reopening re-establishes off-highway vehicle recreation opportunities that have historically been provided in the East Bay. Carnegie SVRA’s 1,300 acres serve California’s Bay Area communities with hill climbs, trail riding and track riding opportunities.

WILLOWS, Calif. – Mendocino National Forest Supervisor Ann Carlson issued an order that opens more trails and campgrounds for the Ranch Fire area, but continues the temporary closure of selected trails and campgrounds until more fire hazards can be removed. The new closure is effective until Dec. 31. Most of the road system and trails in the Ranch Fire area have been evaluated, and hazards have been removed.

Forest Order No. 08-20-02 opens the majority of OHV trails on the Grindstone Ranger District as well as Pine Mountain Lookout and Bear Creek campground on the Upper Lake Ranger District. However, numerous hazards still exist within the general forest, along many roads and trails and in campgrounds. Forest Order 08-20-02, including the order, map and list of closed trails and facilities may be downloaded from the forest website: https://tinyurl.com/urx4jwu.

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. – The Town of South Windsor was unprepared for the overwhelming opposition it faced in February when Mayor Andrew Paterna proposed a ban on ATVs. Paterna said a small number of ATV riders had trespassed on and damaged some farms, and at least one resident complained about excessive sound from ATVs.

But, when word got out that the ban would be considered, motorcycle and ATV enthusiasts packed the meeting chamber. A report from TV station WFSB stated that, “Every town resident who spoke at the Monday night meeting spoke out against the proposal.” Paterna later confirmed to the AMA that he will not raise the issue again.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – State Delegate Kathy Szeliga (R-Baltimore County, Hartford County) has reintroduced a bill that would allow lane splitting in Maryland, as well as require state agencies to create guidelines for safe lane splitting and ways to incorporate the practice into rider education.

Szeliga’s H.B. 920 bill was referred to the House Environment and Transportation Committee. This is just the second time a lane splitting bill has been introduced in Maryland. This bill would require that the state agencies, including the Motor Vehicle Administration and State Highway Administration, develop guidelines for safe and appropriate lane splitting for motorcyclists and other road users.

CONCORD, N.H. – The decades-old tradition of riding motorcycles on a frozen Concord pond came to a halt this year, due to an obscure amendment to the state’s budget. Concord hired Suzi Pegg as its new economic development director in 2017, and she objected to the sound of motorcycles on the pond near her new home. So, she convinced the mayor to talk to state legislators, who included a ban on such riding in the $13 billion 2019 budget bill.

Outraged motorcyclists visited the state capitol to urge lawmakers to reverse the ban. They caught the ear of state Rep. Jack Flanagan (R-Brookline), who proposed an amendment to House Bill 1316 that would reopen the pond for vehicular use on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.

The AMA has supported the Flanagan amendment with letters to state Rep. Suzanne Smith, chair of the House Committee on Resources, Recreation and Development, which is investigating the change.

NEW YORK – The New York City Council is considering a law that would require side guards on trucks fulfilling contracts with the city, such as private garbage private trucks contracted by the city to plow snow. The side guards are designed to prevent motorcyclists, pedestrians and bicyclists from accidently getting underneath the trucks in traffic.

Sponsored by council members Ydannis Rodriguez and Ben Kallos, the bill would require these vehicles would need to be equipped with side guards by Jan. 1, 2021. A law signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in June 2015 already requires truck side guards on city-operated vehicles and private trash haulers fulfilling a contract with the city.

KANAB, Utah – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management developed new land use plans for the Bears Ears National Monument and for three units of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah. The revised Bears Ears boundaries include two separate units, known as the Shash Jáa and Indian Creek units, that are reserved for the care and management of the objects of historic and scientific interest within their boundaries.

The Shash Jáa Unit contains 97,393 acres of BLM-administered lands and 32,587 acres of U.S. Forest Service-administered lands. The Indian Creek Unit contains 71,896 acres of BLM-administered land. Lands that remain part of the 1 million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are the Grand Staircase (209,993 acres), Kaiparowits (551,034 acres) and Escalante Canyons (242,836 acres) units.

The BLM refers to lands that are now excluded from the national monument (861,974 acres) as the Kanab-Escalante Planning Area. The new management plans were prompted by a 2017 directive from the president, which called for “right-sized” boundaries for these public lands, while providing for the protection of objects consistent with the original intent of the Antiquities Act of 1906.

The AMA and Utah officials have urged federal officials to adhere to the provision in the Antiquities Act that requires that monuments should be as small as possible, while still protecting artifacts and cultural resources. The boundary revision process included public meetings, collaboration with local, state and other federal agencies and participation by more than 30 American Indian tribes.

SELAH, Wash. – The Washington Off Highway Vehicle Alliance is asking OHV riders to attend a March 4 meeting with state officials regarding road management on state lands. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the state Department of Natural Resources will provide information and accept comments on the Green Dot program, which designates the roads in Yakima and Kittitas counties are open to public motorized use. The meeting is 6-8 p.m. March 4 at the Selah Civic Center, 216 S. First St., Selah. To view Green Dot maps or learn about the program, visit https://tinyurl.com/r5274lc.

KEEPING THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN– Lance Armstrong … I think it is just terrible and disgusting how everyone has treated Lance Armstrong, especially after what he achieved: winning 7 Tour de France races while on drugs. Hell, when I was on drugs, I couldn’t even find my bike.

Drive By … Someone broke into my house last week. They didn’t take my TV, just the remote. Now they drive by and change the channels. Sick bastards!

The Agony of Aging … On the morning that Daylight Savings Time ended I stopped in to visit my aging friend. He was busy covering his penis with black shoe polish. I said to him, “You better get your hearing checked – You’re supposed to turn your clock back.”

Video Scam … Just got scammed out of $25. Bought Tiger Woods’ DVD entitled “My Favorite 18 Holes.” Turns out it’s all about golf. Absolute waste of money! Pass this on so others don’t get scammed.

Pregnant Prostitute … Doctor asks a pregnant prostitute, “Do you know who the father is?” She replied, “If you ate a can of beans would you know which one made you fart!

A MESSAGE FROM DAVE ZIEN– Since it’s 5° above zero, both Harleys won’t start & had to cancel 320 mile round-trip for a Convention of States Legislative Conference — let’s get fired up!

Just right now I got a call that the Harley- Davidson President / CEO has resigned . Thus perceived by some is Almost as bad as the worldwide coronavirus ,worldwide economic slowdown and possible recession. Or it can be a blessing in disguise?

It’s more important now than ever before, that the total motorcycle community —must better unify and send our message out loud and clear.

The Biker way of life as premiered at the Sturgis Museum must be more thoroughly communicated by each and everyone of us.

Each of us
has stories to tell
memories to cherish
lessons to learn
legacies to share
biblical scripture to expound upon
we are indeed –
“legends being lived ! “

Even though our paths may have drifted apart, our ultimate heavenly destiny is spiritually inspired and divinely guided .
“Pray to live — live to ride
for God‘s greater glory!”

Each of you – we together are ambassadors , missionaries carrying forth the Sturgis Museum’s mission and purpose. It’s important that we Inspire into the hearts and souls of the uninformed, yet unappreciative masses of biker wannabes .

More than who we are
What we have
where we’ve been
What we’ve done
who we’ve impacted &inspired —
“ better is How we intuitively record , visibly document & share our successes ‘l

Yes, sharing those, ”bountiful blessings so beautifully bestowed upon us.”

This Not meant to be self-serving , but awe-inspiring. Those we inspire, could emulate our example in sharing the Bikers Way if Life.

Hope to see many of you at the Hall of Fame breakfast on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.Those group pictures of Hall of Famer’s and Freedom fighters are to be cherished.

IT’S NEVER OVER—Looks like I might sell my ’72 Ford F250 tomorrow. And Eric at Black Bike Wheels said my Panhead wheel will arrive tomorrow.

I’ll need to take the wheel to the tire guys to install a new tire. I once did all this stuff by hand. The new tire machines kick ass. Takes two minutes.

Then it’s off to Chris Morrison to discuss painting the Torpedo Body. If you have some extra buck in a coffee can, we could use a sponsor to two.

More reports coming up. In the meantime, Ride Fast and Free, Forever!
