Hey,
As usual, I don’t know where to start. Last Thursday I received a news clipping that clubs were fighting alongside the roads leading into Laughlin. I didn’t run it, didn’t want to fuel the fire.
A close friend took his first project custom to the desert to show it off to the world of bike builder, only to have the cops impound it. The bike wasn’t completed, so it wasn’t registered. He was forced to jump back in his car and drive back to LA for the bill of sale. Incredible. You can see the bike here: http://www.bikernet.com/garage/PageViewer.asp?PageID=867. I told him to go to the cop shop and tell them to check Bikernet for ownership confirmation. The cop refused.
Saturday night I discovered two girls making out in a car behind the building. Life gets more quirky by the minute.
So here we are, with the weekend winding down. I’ll report on Bonneville bike progress after the news. Let’s hit it:

THUNDER ROAD, SPONSORED BY BIKERNET.COM, THE CUSTOM CAPITAL OF STURGIS, HAS MORE BIKE SHOWS, BABES, BEER AND VENDORS THAN EVER BEFORE– Sturgis, S.D. For the fourth year in a row, during 2006 Sturgis Bike Week, Thunder Road will be the custom capital of Sturgis. Thunder Road will have more bike shows, babes, and beer than anywhere else in Sturgis. This year, the 40,000 square foot Thunderdome will be host to the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building, three major bike shows, and Michael Lichters Schools Out; Old School, New School, All(s)Kool exhibition, which will highlight the industrys best builders and motorcycle artists. As always there is plenty of free motorcycle parking at Thunder Road.
Thunder Road has grown over the last four years into the custom capital of Sturgis with custom bike builders, manufacturers, and high-end parts companies on the lot. In addition to vendors, the prestigious AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building will be held from Saturday, August 5th through Monday, August 7th. The fourth annual Metzler Custom Bike Show will be held on Tuesday, August 8th. All these events will draw the top builders in the world, and there is no better place to showcase their world-class bikes than at Thunder Road.
The Journey continues at Thunder Road with Michael Lichters 6th annual art exhibition of custom motorcycles and wall art. This years exhibit includes custom bikes from over 20 of the top custom builders from around the country, and explores what is meant by the popular and often loosely used phrases old school and new school. Regardless of approach, the lines between different styles of custom bikes are blending, and All(s)Kool.
The Thunderdome will once again be host to Rick Fairless Strokers Sturgis. This venue will be open from 11 am until midnight Saturday August 5th through Friday August 11th. There will be food and beer available all day long from Ricks bar and there will be free live entertainment nightly.
In conjunction Thunder Road will have the best attractions around, including Miss Sturgis, The Texas Bikini Team, and even more great entertainment. Thunder Road is located 3 miles east of Sturgis on Highway 34 and is home to the premier bike builders and vendors in Sturgis.

CANTINA FOREIGN POLICY RELATIONS EFFORTS– A Mexican drinks his beer and suddenly throws his glass in the air, pulls out his pistol and shoots the glass to pieces. He says, “In Mexico our glasses so cheap we don’t need to drink from the same glass twice.”
An Iraqi, obviously impressed by this, drinks his beer, throws his glass into the air, pulls out his AK-47 and shoots the glass to pieces. He says, “In Iraq we have so much sand to make glass that we don’t need to drink out of the same glass twice either.”
The Texas cowboy, cool as a cucumber, picks up his beer and drinks it, throws his glass into the air, pulls out his pistol and shoots the Mexican and the Iraqi, and catches his glass. He says, “In America we have so many illegal Mexicans and Arabs that we don’t have to drink with the same ones twice.”

THE CHIRPING DRESSER QUESTION– Can you help me? I had 510 cams installed in my 2002 FLHTCI and really love the performance, but at 2400 rpm, in any gear, I hear a chirping sound. Is this normal or are the cams installed wrong? It really drives me nuts in town.

BIKERNET RELATIONSHIP ADVICE– This woman and her husband have this really bad fight. He goes off to work the next day without talking to her, but she doesn’t care.
She’s busy doing her thing around the house. All of the sudden, around 1:00 in the afternoon, the doorbell rings. She goes to the door and opens it and there is a young delivery guy from the local florist shop with an enormous, beautiful bouquet of long-stemmed red roses…the expensive ones…from her husband.
She says to the delivery guy with disgust, “Oh CRAP!”
The delivery guy says, “What’s a matter lady? You don’t like roses?”
She replies, “Yeah, I like roses, but do you know what this means?”
He says, “No, Lady, what does this mean?”
She answers, “It means for the next two weeks I’ll be laying on my back with my legs in the air.”
He replies, “Geez, Lady, don’t you have a vase?”

International Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB Information www.speedtrialsbybub.com PH: 530 272 4310 TRIPP NOBLES MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW WITH VICTORY IN DALLAS– As Yogi Berra might say it was “d?j? vu” all over again for Tripp Nobles and the LVHD.com team as they stormed through the V-rod Destroyer class enroute to their second consecutive victory this weekend. Once again Tripp was the number one qualifier and held that advantage first into eliminations and then on to the winner’s circle. Post Phoenix Report Qualifying Following three rounds of qualifying Tripp Nobles took the LVHD.com team to times of 9.334 at 141.24 MPH, 9.419 at 140.59 MPH and 9.382 at 140.96 MPH. Once qualifying was over the LVHD.com team sat on the pole in the thirty-bike field. Eliminations Round One opened with Tripp going against Glen Welchko. Tripp took a relatively easy win against the overmatched Welchko with a 9.396 at 138.78 MPH to a 10.471 at 130.42 MPH. In Round Two Tripp took an odd-field bye and clocked a 9.577 at 139.54 MPH to advance to the next pairing. Tripp’s Round Three opponent was Dan Stratton, Jr., the winner of the initial Destroyer race in Gainesville, FL. Nobles and Stratton, Jr. left the starting almost perfectly even but it was over early as Tripp ran a 9.450 at 140.26 MPH to Stratton, Jr.’s 9.614 at 137.85 to take the win. Tripp paired off against second-generation drag racer Michael Ray in the Semi-finals. Ray, who is the reigning S&S Cycle 124 Challenge class champion left the line first but Nobles ran him down to take a trip to the finals. Nobles ran a 9.456 at 139.98 MPH to Ray’s losing 9.556 at 137.89 MPH. The Final Round saw Trip Nobles facing off against the surprising Jeff Stevens. Stevens took a slight lead from the start but once again Tripp wouldn’t be denied. Nobles got around Stevens running a 9.471 at 140.11 MPH to Steven’s 9.595 at 135.59 MPH for the win. The victory is Tripp Nobles second of the year and his second consecutive win in the newly created V-rod Destroyer class. HOW LOUD IS LOUD– Imagine riding down a quiet, two-lane country road on your way home after work. It’s a warm July evening in 1995. You’ve ridden this route hundreds of times and you’re familiar with every turn and twist in the road. Suddenly, you come upon a car doing 25mph, although the speed limit is 45mph. After a short distance, you decide to pass the car, throttling up your 1952 Pan Head. The straight pipes began to bark that familiar Harley-Davidson song, resonating off of the trees lining the road. Without warning, the car attempts to turn left into a private driveway as you pass mid-car. The disabling injuries this motorcyclist sustained ended his career with the U.S. Postal Service. To add insult to injury, the car driver’s insurance company refused liability and would not pay anything toward his damages or injuries. Miguel Rivera ultimately received a jury award of $1.1 million, thanks to the superior legal work by Michael F. Hupy. But that took nearly 5 years, with depositions and an accident reconstruction report by engineers. Their finding was that the 1980 Toyota Corona, driven by Beth Vandeboom, turned left into a driveway as the 1952 Harley-Davidson was passing on the left. The roadway was 22 feet wide, and the speed of the motorcycle at impact was estimated at 33 to 42 miles per hour (the speed limit on the road was 45 mph). Interestingly, although the motorcycle had louder than usual exhaust, the car driver stated in deposition that she never heard the bike. Her windows were down, at least half way, her air conditioning was not on and her radio was off. Yet, she did not hear the motorcycle coming, nor did she notice it in her mirrors. Officer Paul A. Schmidt, of the Town of East Troy Police Department asked, “At anytime prior to your turning into your driveway, did you hear any type of horn or beeping, to indicate that somebody was passing?” Mrs. Vandeboom responded, “No, I didn’t even know he was there. I didn’t have the radio on or anything. My windows were down and I didn’t hear him at all.” For whatever reason, Mrs. Vandeboom did not hear the motorcycle approach on that July evening. Maybe if his bike had been a little louder, his life and occupation would not have been so drastically changed. Five years of pain, anguish and anxiety over the outcome of this case took a toll on Mr. Rivera, as well as Mrs. Vandeboom. Do loud pipes save lives? Certainly louder pipes might have saved Mr. Rivera from his ordeal, and saved State Farm a great deal of money also. Bikernet is in the process of testing motorcycle exhaust for the reasons discussed above. Loud pipes can save lives and we’ve proved it. Watch for our report to be released in American Iron magazine and of course, on Bikernet. It will be available to motorcycle rights groups all over the country in printed form. –Bandit TEXAS BIKE ACCIDENTS UP– El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles says he’s “frustrated as hell” at the number of accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists. But he and the department are trying to do something about it. “We anticipated issues with motorcycles because we’ve seen a big increase in the number of motorcycles on the road,” Wiles said Thursday. “There are a number of young adults on powerful machines … popping wheelies and speeding. It takes only one thing and they’re out of control.” Wiles said the department will continue to do all it can to enforce the laws, but it’s going a couple of steps beyond that. Wiles would like to offer a free defensive-driving class to the public, and is working on a motorcycle safety course. “We’re working with city prosecutors to mandate this course for a motorcycle operator who is cited for some offense.” He said the course could combine safety training and a fine. But the department isn’t stopping there. “I’m going to petition state legislators to bring back the mandatory helmet law next session,” Wiles said. The Assault Begins. –El Paso Times Staff Texas State Representative Norma Chavez successfully worked on repealing and modifying the existing helmet law in Texas, but our fundamental rights again fall prey to the Straw Man of Common Sense? and, my personal favorite, Protecting People From Themselves.? El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles has decided to once again foment discussion on what should be a dead topic ? mandatory helmet laws. His statistics (as cited by the El Paso Times): Since repeal of the helmet law in 1997, the number of Texas motorcycle fatalities has increased 107.6 percent. Data since 2000 reveal that 71 percent of motorcycle riders (that includes drivers and passengers) involved in fatal accidents in El Paso weren’t wearing helmets. According to Texas Town Safety, El Paso ranks No. 1 in Texas for motorcycle crashes. Conspicuously missing from these statistics is: Factors in the crash. Speed, Alcohol, Drugs. Also, these have not occurred in a vacuum. WHO was at fault in these crashes and fatalities, were they single vehicle crashes or the result of the dreaded left turn syndrome?? I didn?t see him, officer!? Another thing, a number of fatalities in El Paso in recent years were the result of direct actions by the police against sportbike riders. An official/unofficial policy of harassment against these individuals has existed of late. Often the police light up a suspect? and that person attempts to outrun the police (stupid, yes, but the continual and sever abuse many have complained about can lead to such stupidity), only to wind up racing into cross-traffic and being hit and killed. Interesting that a department directly responsible for such behavior is now spouting off about Helmet Laws. Watch out Texas! If the Podunk police chief is mobilizing, how long before the rest? Ride Safe! –Paul E. “Tin Man” Vasquez JAGGERS’ LAW SIGNED– I’m very pleased to echo Holly’s joy and pass along the good news that SB 1929, “Jaggers’ Law”, was SIGNED INTO LAW today by Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry! This law, in keeping with the AMA’s “Justice For All” campaign, is designed to increase penalties for careless, irresponsible drivers that hurt and kill those they share the road with. The law adds a ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR FINE to fatality or injury wrecks where the conviction or guilty plea includes a traffic violation for Failure to Yield Right-Of-Way. The money raised will go into a Department of Public Safety fund to increase Motorcycling Safety Awareness, Reduction of Drunk/Impaired Driving, and Defensive Driving for young people. We’re going to confirm this, but Holly believes an Emergency Clause hasn’t been attached, which means the law will go into effect on November 1. ABATE has filed a request for a formal signing ceremony with the Governor, which should take place in Mid-June. Heartfelt thanks to Holly, our Political Director, for all her hard work and many visits to Capitol Hill; to folks like Denise Jaggers and Janice Raymond, David’s wife and sister , for constantly buttonholing legislators and keeping this bill in the spotlight; and to all of you in our Motorcycling Community for making the phone calls and visits to the Legislature, attending the Jaggers’ Law Poker Runs in 2004 and 2005, and for supporting ABATE of Oklahoma’s efforts to improve the Quality of Life for ALL motorcyclists and trikers in the Sooner State. –Tiger Mike Revere –from Rogue MAY IS CANADIAN MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH!– BCCOM has teamed up with TransLink once again and they will be running our annual “LOOK……motorcyclists should be seen not hurt!” on busboards in the Lower Mainland, which they generously donate to us each year. If you would like to thank them you can find their contact information at http://www.translink.bc.ca/About_TransLink/Contact_Us/default.asp We have also been collaborating with ICBC to bring back their motorcycle safety and awareness campaign, to remind motorists that motorcycles are back on the road and reduce motorcycle casualties. ICBC is placing advertising in the province’s major and community newspapers. A PSA has been provided to all radio stations in BC. A motorcycle safety section has also been added to www.icbc.com and will be live May 1. Visitors can view campaign materials, safety tips, and useful statistics on motorcycles in BC. Additional information will be added throughout the year. Cal Trans and the Orange County Transit are preparing to re-paint the lines, including an HOV Lane. There is Bike club from Fontana CA, a club that is comprised mostly of Sport Bike riders, named 2 Wheel Xtreme Machine. (AKA Team No Limit.) www.2wheelxtrememachine.com . This club made a proposal to Cal Trans and the Orange County Transit, requesting that they consider painting in a four-foot wide “Dedicated Motorcycle Lane” that would run next to the HOV Lane. Doing this could be passed by the local authority, would make “lane-splitting” during peak traffic times a bit safer, would not require any more ground space than is already there, and would not cost the treasury any more money than the paint they are planning on buying, anyway. Both Authorities said that it sounded like an interesting idea, and they would take it under consideration. When I told this to a friend (a rider and ABATE member) who is a Cal Trans official from the San Diego area, he immediately wanted me to get him in touch with the people from Orange County, so that he could make a similar proposal to our local Cal Trans District. So THERE is an interesting proposal ! Let’s see what develops. **** –Rogue IT’S BARBEQUE TIME AT THE BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS–Time to work on bikes and ditch the computers for a while. Jay was able to find a cooperative cop in Laughlin and spring his bike. He’s hanging with the bros and having a Bloody Mary. We will feature the above bike built by Tom Foster shortly. Tom knows how to build a speedster that handles and hauls ass. And the girl ain’t bad. The photography is brought to you by Peter Linney. I’m shutting down to finish the controls and side panels on the V-Bike. The Baker Trans and Accurate Engineering 120 Pan is in place and I’m scrambling to push the frame into a powder coating shop in the next couple of weeks. As is turned out the pegs are perfectly positioned. Need to fill my Acetylene tank next week. The project list grows. Bring me a beer or a margarita, quick. Ride Forever, –Bandit
