I heard a rumor about the Hollister 4th of July event which Bikernet will Sponsor. In the past the California Highway Patrol extorted money from the city for security, as much as $300,000. They put the event out of business more than once. This year is a new deal. The City told the CHP if they want to buzz the town with helicopters, and block roads, to go for it, but the city will not pay. More news included bikes on the main street (San Benito) like the old days just like Sturgis. And of course the Fabulous Thunderbirds are playing their hearts out.

DIRECT FROM THE DALIA LAMA ON MAKING CHANGES— Bringing about positive changes within oneself is most auspicious. Learning is only the first step. There are other factors as well: conviction, determination, action, and effort.
So, the next step is developing conviction. Learning and education are important because they help one develop conviction of the need to change and help increase one’s commitment.
This conviction to change develops into the determination. Next, one transforms determination into action. The strong determination to change enables one to make a sustained effort to implement the actual changes. The final factor is critical.
The first premise is that all ‘deluded’ states of mind, all afflictive emotions and thoughts, are essentially distorted, in that they are rooted in misperceiving the actual reality of the situation. No matter how powerful, deep down these negative emotions have no valid foundation. They are based on ignorance. On the other hand, all the positive emotions or states of mind, such as love, compassion, insight, and so on have a solid basis.
The third premise is that the essential nature of mind is pure. It is based on the belief that the underlying basic subtle consciousness is untainted by negative emotions. Its nature is pure, a state which is referred to as the “mind of Clear Light.” That basic nature of the mind is also called Buddha Nature. So, since the negative emotions are not an intrinsic part of this Buddha Nature, there is a possibility to eliminate them and purify the mind.
So it is on these three premises that Buddhism accepts that the mental and emotional afflictions ultimately can be eliminated through deliberately cultivating antidotal forces like love, compassion, tolerance, and forgiveness, and through various practices such as meditation.
In some respects, the Dalai lama’s approach resembles a mind science, a system that one could apply in much the same way as people utilize psychotherapy, but he goes further.
The Dalai lama’s method for achieving happiness is based on the revolutionary idea that negative mental states are not an intrinsic part of our minds; they are transient obstacles that obstruct the expression or our underlying natural state of joy and happiness.
And when this fact is combined with recent scientific evidence that we can change the structure and function of the brain by cultivating new thoughts, then the idea that we can achieve happiness through training of the mind seems a very real possibility.

PORT OF LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY INVESTMENT GRANT APPLICATION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2015-16 NOW AVAILABLE

SAN PEDRO, Calif. – March 17, 2015 – For the second consecutive year, the Port of Los Angeles will make up to $1 million in non-taxpayer funded community grants to support initiatives, programs, and events benefiting Los Angeles Harbor communities.
During its pilot debut last year, the Community Investment Grant Program, which combines Port community grant-making into one program, funded 53 programs, projects and events. Grant applications for the 2015-2016 grant-funding year are due Monday, May 18, by 5 p.m.
Grant Application Workshops
To help local organizations prepare grant applications, the Port is hosting Community Investment Grant Program workshops. The first will be held Tuesday, April 7, at 6 p.m. at the Port of Los Angeles Administration Building Boardroom, 425 S. Palos Verdes Street in San Pedro. The second will be held at Banning’s Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water St. in Wilmington, on Wednesday, April 8, at 6 p.m.
Grant Award Criteria
· Promote the LA Waterfront in San Pedro and Wilmington, as active visitor-serving destination
· Promote the Port of Los Angeles and the maritime and LA Waterfront related jobs the Port generates
· Address impacts of the Port of Los Angeles and maritime operations on surrounding communities, including health, aesthetic and environmental impacts
· Promote and implement sustainable practices for preservation and conservation of natural resources in the Port environment, from air and water quality initiatives, to renewable energy, wildlife and biological resources at the Port
· Provide education, training and/or workforce development in the areas of:
Shipping, fisheries, international trade and maritime industry
Marine-related sciences and technology
Port and maritime history
Port and marine-related safety and emergency management
Funding for the 2014-15 fiscal year will be made available in three categories: small grants of $5,000 or less; medium grants between $5,001 and $99,999; and large grants of $100,000 or more.
Organizations must be nonprofit with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to apply for Port grants, and funds must be spent within the fiscal year granted (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016). A grant committee comprised of Port, City and community representatives will review and approve all grant applications. Funds for this grant pilot program come from Port of Los Angeles revenues, which are non-tax supported.

MRF, ABATE & NHTSA discuss the Autocycle–
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation along with ABATE of Illinois recently met with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to discuss certain three-wheeled vehicles currently being included in the motorcycle vehicle category. Three-wheeled vehicles are nothing new. Trikes, sidecars and the Can-Am Spyders are commonly seen on the road and even fit in at most motorcycle events. The problem is that other new forms of three-wheeled vehicles mainly emulate a car in many more ways than they do a motorcycle. Yet, this new breed wants to wear a motorcycle license plate.
This type of vehicle is definitely an emerging form of transportation, and it is likely that it will grow into a notable percentage of the vehicles on the road. The Polaris Slingshot, the Elio and the Toyota iRoad all combine different aspects of a motorcycle and passenger vehicle into one vehicle, leaving it without the worthy class of vehicle that this mode of transport needs. Autocycle perhaps?
ABATE of Illinois has already begun to address this by passing legislation to create an autocycle category. That legislation was signed into law in 2014.
All of these new types of autocycles are different, but they do have one similarity; they are not motorcycles. But because of the loose definition of a motorcycle at the federal level these vehicles can technically be categorized as a motorcycle. But therein lies the rub; some of these new vehicles have airbags, steering wheels, the powertrain of a passenger car, side-by-side seating, windshield wipers and seat belts.
“This is going to be a long, difficult road to create a new class of vehicle, but it must be done,” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. “Opening a dialogue is the first step to address what is sure to be a big issue in the motorcycle community.”
The NHTSA team agreed that we do need to address this issue head on before it is too late. Keeping these vehicles out of the motorcycle class will ensure that inaccurate fatality and injury will be reduced.
Creating a new class of vehicle brings many challenges. Training and licensing will have to be modified, helmet laws will be blurred, and expert crash reporting will be crucial, but it’s only fair that they get their own class of vehicle, because they are clearly not motorcycles or passenger cars.

THERE YOU HAVE IT— I just chuckled as I thought about the myriad of crap I throw at you in the news and the Post. Shit the news is full of jokes, strange history, anti-regulation banter, motorcycle legislation, gun laws, Buddhism, health tips, and philosophy.
I’m not trying to convert anyone, but like the search for peace, tranquilty, reasoning, or the Code of the West, we constantly search. It’s good to open the mind to new info or angles. I’ve found it simple yet fascinating to study about the mind and how it can change.
As we are faced by more and more alternate, and often confusing obstacles in life it’s good to know how to change and embrace change. At the end of the day new stress is harmful in many respects, including physically. The best cure is not drugs or alcohol, but alternate thinking. We all need to find a way, anyway that’s not harmful to us or anyone else to find peace. Maybe it’s just a long motorcycle ride out of town to clear the cobwebs.
So, fuck it, clear your mind quick. We are starting a new week at the Bikernet Interplanetary Nerve Center, and Galatic War Room. We will contribute more techs, and I’m damn close with the next sizzling Cantina Episode. Hopefully, Sam Dixon is hooked up and a new Cantina program will be underway. I will rough out the Steve Huntzinger story this week.
