Andrews’ Cams in Twin Cam with Late Model Cam Plate


I recently read the Bikernet article on the Screaming Eagle cam plate installation on Bandit’s son’s Dyna. The SE cam plate is a hybrid cam plate that allows the use of the 1999-2006 cams with the 2007 cam chain tensioners. The purpose of the cam support is to do away with the 1999-2006 cam chain tensioners that wear out and may possibly lead to engine failure due to the wear particles that become suspended in the engine.

I have done two previous cam installs on my 2005 FLHT. The first install was done when the engine displacement was increased to 95 inches. The cam chain tensioners were well-worn with minimal mileage on the bike. I read that initially the cam chains take a toll on the cam tensioners until the chains are worn in and “polished.”

I installed new stock cam chain tensioners, as that was the only option at the time. Bandit installed gear drive cams on the 2003 “King” shortly afterward. I followed suit and installed a gear drive cam kit.

I was not pleased with the result. The bike performed flawlessly. The problem was the cam noise. I live in the South and with 110 heat index days the cam chest sounded like a sewing machine. An autumn trip to Wisconsin proved an interesting comparison. In the cool Wisconsin evenings the cam chest was much quieter and not a distraction.

Upon my return to South Louisiana the cam chest noise returned to its audible din. It had to go. I removed the gear drive cams and inspected for wear. The cam set was perfect to the point it looked as if it had never been installed.

I replaced the gear drive kit with the previous stock setup and all was relatively quiet again. My only concern was the stock 2005 cam chain tensioner setup.


This brings me back to the SE hybrid cam plate. I chose to install the SE plate to be rid of the stock cam chain tensioners. I looked for another internet article or review on the SE kit prior to purchase. This quickly led to my learning about the Andrew Conversion cams and installation kit. This kit uses the 2007 Harley cam plate and hardware with a set of Andrew cams. The Andrew cams are unique in that they have dual sized shaft ends. The larger 1.00-inch OD cam end fits the 2007 Harley cam plate and the smaller 0.875-inch OD cam shaft end fits the 1999-2006 engine case.

The beauty of this install is that the cams do not need to be pressed in. The cam plate bearings are no longer used in the 2007 cam plate. The cam rides in a lubricated bore instead. This technology is widely used in the automotive industry.

Both cam chains are updated and the late style hydraulic cam tensioners are used. There have been no indicated problems with the 2007 cam plate setup reported. It has a proven track record and all parts are factory stock.

This looked good to me. I placed an order for a set of Andrew’s 26N Conversion cams. This was the cam grind I ran on all my previous installs. It performs well with the FLHT 95-inch displacement. The bike starts easily, accelerates smoothly and is a good overall runner.

Instead of ordering the Andrew cams with the install kit, I chose to purchase the Harley parts from my preferred internet Harley dealer. The total cost of the Harley factory parts and Andrew’s cam set was $600. I installed the cam set and cam plate at home and the only “special” tool required was a torque wrench.

The install was easy given there were no bearings or cams to press in. A secondary benefit is the 2007 larger capacity oil pump. Plus, the late style cam chain tensioners are not prone to wear. Best feature: The cam chest is dead quiet!


The cam chest is virtually silent as compared to the previous cam installs. What I hear when I place an ear to the cam chest area is pushrod movement and air filter breathing. I am looking forward to finally riding my 2005 FLHT without concern of it falling victim to the earlier cam chain tensioner design. In closing, I would add that I run high-grade synthetic oil in the bike for better cooling and engine protection.
