ACTION-PACKED THURSDAY NEWS FOR JULY 12, 2012

Hey,

We worked with Sprocket List Classifieds for a couple of years, but the company changed hands, so we are also going to shift gears. Do us a favor. Let us know what you like and don’t like about our classifieds section. Also let us know what you would like to see, when it comes to classifieds. Lay a wish list on us.

I’m going to jump right into the news, then we’ll discuss bikers, choppers, motorcycles, and motorcycle content flying at Bikernet.

WISCONSIN NEEDS TO PUT ITS MONEY WHERE ITS MOUTH IS– The Wisconsin DOT continues to falter when it comes to motorcycle awareness.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and its Motorcycle Safety Program continue to blindly cite the same old statistics put out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding motorcycle fatalities. They continue to push motorcycle helmets along with bright clothing and the like as some type of “silver bullet” to solve the motorcycle fatality problem even though they are unable to produce any hard evidence that those practices create any measurable difference. If the Wisconsin DOT and its Motorcycle Safety Program were really serious about saving lives, wouldn’t you think that they would take a page from programs that are actually working and stop wasting valuable time and money pushing an agenda that has questionable results?

What has actually worked in reducing motorcycle fatalities then? Let’s use Florida as a shining example. The state of Florida has made a concerted effort to lower the motorcycle fatalities in its state by launching a massive billboard campaign, state-wide distribution of public service announcements on radio and television as well as creating a massive “Share The Road” program to educate young automobile drivers. Florida’s Motorcycle Safety Coalition also ramps up their activity during the busier months of the year. So what have been the results? Florida has dropped their fatalities by over 200 per year using this approach and continues to improve! Now those are real numbers you can get excited about! This is exactly what ABATE of Wisconsin has been doing for years and all with donated dollars.

So, how does the state of Wisconsin stack up? As far as a billboard campaign, the state of Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program has created no motorcycle awareness billboards while ABATE of Wisconsin has put up over 150 to date. In the public service announcement arena, the state of Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program has created none while ABATE of Wisconsin has PSA’s playing in all major markets in the state on radio and television. ABATE of Wisconsin is very proud of its “Share The Road” program where it has educated over 45,000 drivers education students about motorcycle awareness while the state of Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program has done nothing. And while motorcycle fatalities are rising in the state, the Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council has suspended their meetings instead of increasing their efforts.

The state of Wisconsin and its Motorcycle Safety Program spends thousands of tax dollars every year yet they continue to sound the alarm that fatalities are out of control. Well then, maybe it’s time for them to admit that the things they’re doing aren’t working. If the state of Wisconsin was really serious about motorcycle fatalities, then they should reallocate funds to programs that actually work or give it to motorcycle organizations that know how to get the job done.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE NRA–U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Negotiations Underway.
As we reported last week, for nearly 20 years, the NRA has fought tirelessly to oppose any United Nations effort to undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding American gun owners. That fight has grown more intense lately, as the U.N. and global gun banners have markedly stepped up their attack on our Second Amendment freedoms by including civilian arms in the proposed Arms Trade Treaty.

As called for in a resolution adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2009, a conference began this week in New York City to draft the treaty’s language. The United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty is one of the most serious threats to American gun owners in decades.

The NRA will continue to maintain a strong presence at the ATT meeting, which will run through July 27. And we will continue to champion the position that any ATT must in no way impact gun owners’ rights.

Rest assured that NRA will be present throughout the entire U.N. meeting and will provide frequent updates. You may also rest assured that NRA will continue to lead the fight against any U.N. treaty that undermines the constitutional rights of American gun owners.

As we await the conclusion of the meeting, please be sure to contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to strongly oppose any U.N. treaty that in any way diminishes our constitutional rights.

You can find contact information for your U.S. Senators by using the “Write Your Representatives” tool at www.NRAILA.org. You may also contact your Senators by phone at (202) 224-3121.

WATCH OUT FOR THIS ONE–Just as a quick refresher, SB435 is the 2013 CA law that all bikes manufactured on and after 2013; plus all aftermarket pipes purchased on and after 2013; the exhaust needs to have the EPA stamp stating the muffler is manufactured for the type of bike it is mounted to. SAE J2825 is a hand held decibel meter testing method that the AMA (and endorsed by MRF) is pushing for law in each and every state and I believe the AMA is working with the EPA to make it Federal; see article in Easyriders Magazine May 2012.

As we discussed during the recent BOLT meeting, SAE J2825 is in fact coming to your state. It IS being introduced by a firm called DPS Technical. Hopefully the other states can learn from CA (even though we failed to stop SB435) and stop similar SB435 laws and SAE J2825

When we learned that CA Office of Traffic Safety actually issued grants for sound testing equipment (what does that have to do with safety), we did several public information requests. The document that you should study is the 3 page “Training Bulletin”. DPS trains law enforcement in the SAE J2825 procedure AND they train them on how to win in court. SAE J2825 procedure is NOT public knowledge…you have to buy the procedure from SAE.

In CA, SAE J2825 is not (yet) a legally recognized method for testing noise. Yet two police departments were/are using the method AND getting away with it because no one fights the ticket

In noting the last paragraph: Correction Procedure; Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) nor any other testing facility in CA has any means of testing noise level on motorcycles. Eric Partika called several of the agencies (recorded the conversation) and none have ever heard of any law enforcement agency referring any ticketed motorcycle to BAR for testing. Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) then states they will test the bikes using SAE J2825 to verify the bikes are legal.

MRF SPEAKS OUT–We never have supported it, ever, I was the one in the room during the Sound Advice working groups and the MRF and one manufacturer emphatically opposed this.
It offends me when someone takes something we have done consistenly for several years and calls it a changed position, this is still WRONG

–Kirk Williard

I really hate to say this but this whole original post is full of inaccuracies and innuendos not only when it comes to the MRF’s stance on J2825 but J2825 itself. Sorry this is a noise issue and is something we are very familiar with here in Massachusetts. This guy didn’t even get the name of the SMRO in New Hampshire right. This sounds more like a doom and gloom piece written to inspire panic in people. To me whom ever wrote this did not bother to let true facts get in his way of writing this piece.

You most certainly can get copies of the testing procedures under this standard with out purchasing them from SAE. Anyone that would like a copy just let me know and I’ll make sure we forward it to you.

As for New Hampshire the cops up there have already been doing roadside sound checks on motorcycles using this standard despite the law not even taking effect until January of 2013. Enough said on that subject.

DIRICO MOTORCYCLES IS STILL ALIVE–  The New England Warrior Benefit was held last Tuesday, July 3rd in Boston, Mass., and five custom DIRICO Motorcycles were auctioned off as part of the military gala to benefit five foundations dedicated to helping the families of wounded and fallen U.S. Special Operations Forces.

Thomas Haas of Portsmouth, New Hampshire was one lucky winning bidder, winning TWO of the beautiful bikes: the Navy SEALs Tribute Bike and the Marines Tribute Bike. I’ve enclosed a photo of Haas with the Navy SEALs Tribute Bike. The bike features an impressive exterior design that includes cool images of covert SEALs and a 3D gun, and houses a Harley-Davidson Twin Cam B engine. The Marines Tribute motorcycle features one of our country’s most classic war images: “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.”

AUSTRALIAN MOTORCYCLE SALES INCREASE IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2012–Motorcycle sales in Australia increased in the first half of 2012, according to figures releases today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

In the six months to the end of June, 51,952 motorcycles were delivered to Australian customers, representing an increase of 1,331 units (or 2.6 per cent) over the same period in 2011.

Sales growth was mostly driven by the road bike segment, which increased 8.4 per cent (1,567 units) to 20,174 and the All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) segment, which increased by 3.4 per cent (357 units) to 10,951 compared with the first six months of 2011. Scooter sales saw a big drop to 5,233 units, being 13.6 per cent or 832 less scooters sold year to date compared with last year.

The off-road segment accounted for 15,594 sales (to the end of June) for a 30 per cent market share.

The road bike segment remains the single largest by market share, with half-year sales representing 39% of all motorcycles sold.

ATV deliveries represented 21 per cent of the market, while scooters’ share decreased to 10 per cent.

Honda was the number one brand, delivering 11,788 motorcycles to the end of June. Yamaha was in second position to the end of June with 8,692 sales, followed by Suzuki (6,105), Kawasaki (4,612) and Harley-Davidson (3,643).

SPEAKING OF NUMBERS—We installed a new tracking system, called Stat Counter. We believed in our last two systems, but they were inaccurate. So, here are our numbers for June:

83,400—Bikernet.com unique visitors
7440—Bikernet Baggers
7380—Bikernet Trikes

I suspect Baggers to overrun Trikes by the end of the year, and Buck Lovell is doing a helluva job, but so is the Triking Viking. Hang on as we watch them grow.

CHICHARONES CUT SWINE FLU–  The group is often described as a mixture between the Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, and Sublime. Here’s a preview link for your review http://soundcloud.com/thechicharones/sets/the-chicharones-swine-flew/s-plqm4.

NEW BIKERNET ARTICLE, “THE SWEET YEARS” HIT HOME–  I agree with this article. As much as I love Shovels, the Evos are so much better engineered. They really are some Sweet bikes, and they are now probably cheaper than Shovels, which have attained cult status!

WOODEN MOTORCYCLE NOW ON EXHIBIT AT STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–  The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to be the new home for an all wooden motorcycle built by wood artist Mike Sohn of Hannibal, Missouri. The bike, which is modeled after a 1909 Harley-Davidson Twin took a year and a half to complete. The artist estimates there are at least nine different kinds of wood in the creation.

“We are so excited to have this piece of art in our museum,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. “I’m completely amazed by the detail of this motorcycle – everything, down to the springs on the seat is a true work of art. I’m always excited to add new items to the museum’s collection, and am thrilled that Mike thought the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum would be the right home for this piece for the next couple of years.”

Mike Sohn is a long-time wood artist based in Hannibal, Missouri. Sohn’s passion for woodworking began at a young age and developed over time. The self taught artist has produced many small scale pieces such as a jalapeño pepper titled “Running Hot” and a light bulb dubbed “Lighten Up.”

Now retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Sohn has been able to direct his attention towards much larger projects. He selects his projects based on what happens to strike his passion or interest. Sohn often finds himself inspired by everyday objects especially automobiles. Examples of some of his more accomplished work include an American Chopper motorcycle, and 1909 Harley Davidson and a Model T car.

Museum memberships are available on the museum’s website at www.sturgismuseum.com.

BAD COPS MEET DUMB COPS– Prank costs officers their jobs.

By Ludmilla Lelis Orlando Sentinel

CLERMONT — Officer Christina Fowler was working the night shift on March 5 when she spotted a speeding car heading south on U.S. Highway 27 around 11:20, according to an investigative report. She tried to pull the car over, but the driver only tapped the brakes before taking off. Fowler followed. The video from her patrol- car camera captured the scene as the car raced away.

‘Man, he’s doing over 80,’ she said. And then, moments later, ‘Wow, he’s doing over 90.’ Inside the fleeing car were three fellow officers from the Clermont police force on their way back from a trip to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa, according to the report obtained Monday.

Fowler continued to pursue the car, turning on her car’s emergency lights when it pulled into the Clermont Landing shopping center parking lot, the report said. The driver jumped out of his vehicle and Fowler drew her weapon. Then she realized it was Officer Marc Thompson who was laughing.

As a result of that offduty prank, two police officers were fired from the Clermont squad. Sgt. Mark Edwards and Thompson were terminated Thursday by police Chief Steve Graham for department violations. A third officer, Dennis Hall, was suspended for one day without pay. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, at Graham’s request, and determined: ‘all officers involved in this incident felt that the prank was not malicious in nature but was intended to be a joke.’

The report continued: ‘Officer Fowler felt, however, that the driver, Officer Thompson, she was pursuing was driving at unsafe speeds which had the potential to cause a serious accident especially near S.R. 50 where there is road construction and a dangerous intersection.’

Thompson, behind the wheel of his personal vehicle, laughed hysterically when he was finally pulled over by Fowler, and said ‘he was just having fun,’ according to the report. Hall and Edwards were passengers in the car.??Edwards was in the front passenger seat, hunched over with a gray hoodie obscuring his face, the report said.

He remembered that Thompson was driving on U.S. 27 and saw Fowler’s patrol car, the report said. Thompson was swerving the vehicle and was aware that Fowler had turned on her emergency lights, but Edwards told investigators he wasn’t paying attention and was ‘messing with his phone,’ the report said. Hall was in the backseat and remembered Thompson saying that he would get Fowler to pull him over and Hall suggested ‘it would be funny if he (Thompson) got out and ran.’

SADDLEMEN WEEKEND RACE REPORT–Round 6 of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship took place this weekend in Hagerstown, MD, where Saddlemen riders took the win in both the GNC Expert Twins and Pro Singles classes with their Saddlemen Flat Track seats.

AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship
Saddlemen riders showed great speed on Saturday, taking four of the top five positions, including two podium spots. Early in the race, Jared Mees made it clear that he wanted to win. In the early laps he opened up a gap and ran away from the field. Mees earned his first victory of the year with a 4.200 second gap over the runner-up, and extended his lead in the series points.

While Mees was busy checking out the field, fellow Saddlemen riders Jeffery Carver Jr., Johnny Lewis and Sammy Halbert were providing plenty of racing action for the fans. The trio swapped positions nearly every lap as they battled for 3rd, but it was ultimately Carver who claimed the final position on the podium, marking his first ever podium finish in the GNC Expert Twins class. Lewis finished the race in 4th, while Halbert rounded out the top five. Saddlemen Rookie of the Year points leader Briar Bauman finished in 13th.

Saddlemen is proud to sponsor some of the best flat track racers in the world, as Jared Mees now holds a 15-point lead over second in the series points. Johnny Lewis sits in third ahead of fellow Saddlemen rider Sammy Halbert. Bryan Smith holds the 5th-place position in the point standings.

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles

Saddlemen riders put in great results in the Pro Singles class by sweeping the podium. After a restart on lap three, Gerit Callies took over the lead, which he held onto for the remainder of the race even after facing additional restarts. The victory marked Callies’ third win of the year. Saddlemen riders Adam Bushman and Ryan Wells rounded out the podium by finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

UNCLE MONKEY ON SHAKE-DOWN RIDES–  High fives were going around for having completed my bike and for having survived her first major shake down ride. My friend Jason lamented that it must have been nice to go for a ride.

While I invited him to come along, work kept him busy beyond our prompt 5:30 departure time. He instead agreed to meet his friends later that night for a ride. Its not surprising that the parking lot of Canadian’s Tim Horton’s was packed with bikes and riders sweating it out in heavy leathers on the warm summer night. Promises of “another ten minutes” and “right away” postponed the evening until Jason finally gave up, took the long way home and called it a night.

Ride night is just that Ride Night. Why people think driving five minutes to the local coffee shop and standing around for four hours as a ride night is beyond me. My friends and I always plan to ride somewhere. The 40 or so miles to Ardill were nothing extravagant. A half hour of riding, taking in the countryside, and wondering if the dark clouds on the horizon would bring rain, is a ride.

Ardill boasts a proud population of no one but it does have a bar with cold beer and hot food. We talked about the ride, talked about my bikes, concerts coming up and stories from back in the day about a three-week diet of Denny’s and CCR.

We laughed, we smiled, and we gave the barkeep a hard time about being the only ones she’s seen all day. Then it was back on the road heading home. As we entered the city we waved goodbye to friends as they splintered off towards their own homes. We didn’t go far, usually don’t keeping the ride to under an hour, just far enough to forget about the day and the week and fall into that hypnotic rhythm of tar snakes under thundering pipes.

We spent just as much as the guys standing in the parking lot, but we shared the stories, shared the road that only riding miles can give.

Antique Motorcycle Club of America and Antique Motorcycle Foundation Come Together to Support Education–  The Antique Motorcycle Club of America Inc. (AMCA) and the Antique Motorcycle Foundation Inc. (AMF) have announced the establishment of the Old Iron Grant Program to promote the preservation of antique motorcycles.

The AMCA will administer the grant approval process, while the AMF will provide funding of up to $5,000 per year. The program is designed to “provide financial support for the education of individuals who will advance the practice of antique motorcycle preservation and restoration, and the pursuit of knowledge that may be beneficial to the understanding and preservation of antique motorcycles.”

“We are very pleased to announce this cooperative program between the Club and the Foundation,” said AMF President Dennis Craig. “There is no doubt that there are many worthy individuals who deserve support to increase our understanding of these historic machines, and we believe no group is better qualified to identify these men and women than the leadership of the AMCA.”

The AMCA has established a task force within the club’s Board of Directors to work out the grant application and approval process, which will be announced soon.

“This new program promotes the shared interests of the AMCA and the AMF,” said AMCA President Richard Spagnolli, “and we look forward to awarding the first Old Iron Grant later this year.”

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America is the nation’s largest organization for vintage-bike enthusiasts. For more information on the AMCA, visit www.antiquemotorcycle.org. OH BOY – Medical Reason To Drink.– Now the Big Question. –Will Women Say They Are Older?

Study: Booze may help older women

By Steven Reinberg  HealthDay

Drinking one or two alcoholic beverages several times a week may improve the bone health of older women and reduce their risk for osteoporosis, a small study suggests.

Bones are living tissue with old bone continually removed and replaced in a process called remodeling. In people with the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis, more bone is lost than replaced. Postmenopausal women are at particular risk because of reduced estrogen, a hormone essential for bone strength, the researchers explained. “This study clearly demonstrates that even small amounts of alcohol have potent actions and can rapidly impact bone metabolism,” said lead researcher Urszula Iwaniec, an associate professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University.

As part of a healthy lifestyle, “moderate alcohol may slow bone loss by lowering bone turnover,” she said. That means it may lower the risk for osteoporosis, she explained. “Reducing bone turnover, while beneficial to the aging skeleton, may be detrimental to young adults who are still building bone,” Iwaniec said.

Roughly half of all U.S. women and one-fourth of men will break a bone because of osteoporosis, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which provided partial funding for the study. For the study, published in the July 11 online edition of Menopause, Iwaniec’s team followed 40 postmenopausal women, average age 56, who drank moderately and were not using hormone replacement therapy.

FROM 1896 TO 1986—NEARLY A CENTURY OF AUTOMOBILE HISTORY TO BE OFFERED IN UNIQUE AALHOLM COLLECTION SALE–
LONDON (12 July, 2012) – Collectors from around the world are excitedly requesting catalogues to see in detail some of the diverse and highly-prized lots that will go under the hammer during RM Auctions highly anticipated Aalholm “without reserve” auction, 12 August in Southern Denmark.

Representing nearly a century of automobile manufacturing supplemented by some fascinating lots, including a Wright Brothers Replica Plane, a 1890s Danish Royal Train Carriage and a rare, highly-prized toy train set, the single-day sale of the Aalholm Automobil Museum is generating unprecedented interest from around the world. At one time, a significant and well-known attraction on the southern Danish island of Lolland, the Aalholm Automobil Museum, which had delighted visitors with its diverse and rare collection of cars from 1964 until 2007, is now available to be purchased in a once-in-a-lifetime, no reserve auction.

The collection is notable for a number of very early brass-era veteran cars from the late-1800s and early-1900s, with several of the cars eligible for the world-famous London to Brighton veteran car run in England. The sale features an exceptional roster of pre-1905 vehicles, including a very early 1896 Léon Bollée Voiturette (pictured top), a 1899 De Dion-Bouton Tricycle, a 1900 De Dion-Bouton Four-Seat Vis-à-Vis and a 1900 Decauville Roadster. Also on offer, a 1902 Lacroix de Laville La Nef Tricycle, a 1902 Rambler Model C Runabout, a 1902 Holsman High-Wheel Runabout, along with a Renault 10CV Limousine and a Ford Model A Runabout dating back to 1903, and a 1904 Delahaye Surrey-Top Tourer.

Beyond the automobiles, one lot sure to catch the eye of serious collectors is the 1903 Wright Brothers Replica Plane, which although a replica, is thought to have been constructed between 1907 and 1909. The engine fitted is believed to be of the Renault type from the period 1918–1925, and it is possible that the plane might have been flown. The plane is an iconic Aalholm Collection piece as it was suspended from the ceiling of the main hall until the museum closed.

Another key non-automotive lot on offer is the 1890s Danish Royal Train Carriage. A superb recreation, it consists of several different, grand compartments, one of which is paneled in exquisite, veneered wood from the ceiling to the floor. The seats are clothed in deep, rich, red velour, along with the arm and head rests, while in some areas the walls are covered with grand wallpaper hosting the Danish Royal emblem. The exterior of the train is painted a two-tone cream and navy blue with red coaching. This Danish Royal Carriage would be a magnificent piece in any collection.

Train enthusiasts will also appreciate the 1920s Märklin Train Set (pictured). A present to Baron J.O. Raben-Levetzau for his 16th birthday, the train set was originally housed in one of the first-floor rooms in the Aalholm castle. There are seven engines and 58 carriages altogether, including petrol tankers, cranes, timber carriages and passenger carriages, along with approximately 60 meters of track.

Among a long list of highlights, other notable entries for the sale include:
· a 1911 Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Silver Ghost Roi des Belges Tourer, the first car in the collection;
· a much admired 1938 Bugatti 57C Stelvio Drophead Coupe by Gangloff;
· a rare 1931 Bugatti Type 40A Tourer;
· a remarkably original, right-hand drive 1928 Mercedes-Benz Nürnburg Limousine;
· a 1932 Hispano-Suiza HS26 Cabriolet-Victoria;
· a very rare surviving 1938 Maybach Zeppelin DS8 Roadster;
· a 1947 Delahaye 135 M Cabriolet; and
· an unrestored 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/E.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS–Are You at an Elevated Risk for Alzheimer’s? While the exact cause of Alzheimer’s remains unclear, the greatest known risk factor is increasing age: the chance of developing Alzheimer’s seems to double every five years after age 65. After age 85, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s is about 50 percent. While you can’t do anything about getting older, there are some simple measures that can help:

1.Challenge yourself. A growing body of medical evidence suggests that lifelong stimulation is the key to building and maintaining brain cells, staving off memory loss and maybe even preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Try doing interesting work (paid or volunteer), pursuing hobbies, engaging in an active social life, taking music or language lessons, or learning a new computer program.

2.Take a daily low-dose aspirin. Some studies link the use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s.

3.Use healing spices in your cooking. Turmeric, ginger and red pepper can add zing to meals and are all natural anti-inflammatories.

4.Eat a diet rich in omega-3s, including wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, freshly ground flaxseed and walnuts.

5.Incorporate plenty of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables in your meals.

6.Reduce your intake of polyunsaturated vegetable oils (such as sunflower, corn and safflower oils), replacing them with extra virgin olive oil.

As Society Abandons the Phone Booth– After a very busy day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes as the train departed Penn Station in NYC for Central New Jersey .

As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone
and started talking in a loud voice: “Hi sweetheart, it’s Eric. I’m on the train. Yes,
I know it’s the 6:30 and not the 4:30, but I had a long meeting. No honey, not with that floozy from the accounts office, with the boss. No sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life. Yes, I’m sure, cross my heart!” Etc, etc. . . .

Several minutes later, he was still talking loudly when the young woman sitting next
to him, who was obviously angered by his continuous diatribe, yelled at the top of her
voice: “Hey, Eric, turn that stupid phone off and come back to bed.”

Eric doesn’t use his cell phone in public any longer

BIKERNET TRIKES BRINGS YOU THE BEST CLASSIC BIKER MOVIES– Thanks to Netflix many classic (and not so classic) biker movies are actually still available for your viewing pleasure. Most of the poser flicks included words Wild, Angles or Hell in the title but after weeks of diligent watching, extensive scientific research and allot of beer, I’ve have provided my top ten list of must see biker Netflix.

The criteria are based on three factors, first the actual availability to view the movie, secondly, the socio/political impact on motorcycle culture and finally, how much I personally liked the movie. What makes me a movie critic? Everybody’s a critic! I intentionally did NOT include The Wild One, Easy Rider, On Any Given Sunday, Worlds Fastest Indian, etc. because they are obvious choices.

In typical Letterman Top Ten countdown fashion let the games begin.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE WELCOMES MIKE WOLFE OF “AMERICAN PICKERS”–  Indian Motorcycle is proud to team up with Mike Wolfe, creator and host of “American Pickers” on HISTORY. Wolfe has been picking, or finding antique gems in unique places, since the age of 5; and he has a passion for Indian Motorcycles. His self-proclaimed “best pick ever”, a barn full of classic Indians, fueled his desire to pursue the unique profession as a career.

“A few years back I was reading a motorcycle magazine. There was a classified ad that read ‘Buy-Sell-Trade Indian Motorcycles.’ I called the number. The older man who answered the phone said there were still a few rusty bikes out in the barn. I drove 800 miles, arriving in Pennsylvania the very next morning. When the old farmer opened the barn door I knew I had hit the mother lode: 10 vintage Indian bikes and two more barns full of spare parts. The mega pick of a lifetime,” recalls Wolfe.

Wolfe has turned his love for products that made America great into ”American Pickers”, a top cable television series, educating audiences about Indian in a refreshing and new way. “With Mike’s genuine passion for riding and knowledge of the brand, we feel he is the perfect brand champion to serve as the link between the incredible heritage of Indian Motorcycle and the exciting road ahead for Indian in the future”, says Darren Bassel, director of marketing at Indian Motorcycle. Mike Wolfe agrees, saying “I’m an Indian rider, so I love the fact that I get to work with such an iconic American brand” said Wolfe. “These bikes are known for their timeless innovation, design and quality. It’s going to be a hell of a ride.”

Wolfe will visit the Indian Motorcycle Experience at 3rd and Lazelle on Friday, Aug. 10th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm to discuss how Indian helped him become America’s #1 picker. Fans can get an autograph or a picture, or even bring a vintage Indian bike or memorabilia for a chance to spend some quality time with Mike and swap stories about Indian.

The Museum’s special event space, the Garage, has been transformed to house nearly 60 leather jackets once worn by World War II fighter pilots, film stars, rock legends, rebel youth and runway models, to include from the USA’s SchottNYC and the UK’s legendary Lewis Leathers.

The masterfully designed exhibit takes visitors through five areas where the leather jacket has played a major role – History, Music, Fashion, Hollywood and Collectors. In addition to the jackets, Worn to be Wild uses artifacts such as motorcycles, riding gear and photographs, to include images from the Ace Cafe London Archive, to help tell the black leather jacket’s story.

Worn to be Wild: The Black Leather Jacket runs through Sept. 3 and is presented in partnership with the EMP Museum in Seattle. This is the first major traveling exhibit created by the curatorial staff at the Harley-Davidson Museum, and it’s the first time the complete history of the black leather jacket is being showcased, giving visitors a glimpse into all facets of how the jacket has become a main staple in popular culture.

The Harley-Davidson Museum is located at 400 West Canal Street in Milwaukee and provides a glimpse of American history and culture like you’ve never seen it before – through the lens of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. THIS IS CRAZY—This year is absolutely nuts. We’ve seen businesses expand and explode. We’ve witness innovative endeavors strike out, and some succeed. It’s damn uplifting, in this era of tough times, to see folks make a stab at growth. I received the complete complaint between Easyriders and the Sturgis Saloon. This is one of those stories of growth and dreams, but it’s stumbling. I wish they could work it out for two reasons: It was a shot in the arm for the Easyriders brand, and the guys who built the Saloon gambled a ton of cash on a 10-day-a-year event. That’s rolling the dice.

It’s part of the American spirit. About the time the world says you can’t build custom motorcycles, we will build more than ever. Recently, a race promoter pointed out how fewer and fewer young folks build race vehicles, because the government doesn’t want you to work on anything. Hell, they don’t want us to fix a toaster.

So we fight back. What the hell, you only go around once. But enough woes on wrench turning. I’m installing a set of Samson’s exhaust on a twin cam Fatboy this Saturday. I’ll wrap up the Bonne Belle report tomorrow, and my Son’s FXR is ready for it’s first test ride. I need to finish the Marlboro Man bike report. I think I made sense of all the reiterations of that movie motorcycle. And I’m looking forward to writing the Rollin Karoll story about the Victory Judge. I know, It’s just a road test story, but any tale wrapped around the Smoke Out, has a strange twist.

Have a helluva weekend,

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
