Hey,
I’m scrambling on my Sturgis ’17 article to be posted next week. A bunch is flying through my mind now that Sturgis is behind me. We need to be in Bonneville with the Salt Torpedo next year. That’s a must. I’ll be 70 and brothers all around me are slipping away. When I say we have no time to lose, I mean it.
It’s odd and maybe not. I should have this discussion with Arlen Ness, Cory or any man who knows the desire of completing a project. As a young man I wanted to be able to do everything on my bikes. I would have built a chrome shop behind my garage if I could.
There’s that strange sense of loosing connection with a project when it’s out of your hands and you must rely on others. When it’s in your hands, you know exactly what’s happening and when.
Let’s hit the news and then I’ll endeavor to make sense of my thinking and this coming year.
SECOND RUNNING of Sons of Speed Thrills at 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally– Jake Takes Home Top Honors at Second Sons of Speed Moto Race
On August 10, riders lined up for the second-ever Sons of Speed banked motorcycle race. Fresh off its inaugural run at Daytona Bike Week 2017, Sons of Speed ran its sophomore contest at The Full Throttle Saloon’s Pappy Hoel Campground racetrack during the 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
“We were rolling on a dirt track without a clutch or brakes, so that made things interesting,” said Billy Lane, renowned bike builder and founder of Sons of Speed. “Can’t wait to do it again.”
This was the first such event ever held at the Pappy Hoel Campground racetrack, and the weather was perfect for it. First-place honors went to eBay Jake on a 1919 Harley-Davidson. Billy Lane took second, riding a 1919 Harley-Davidson. Freddy Bollwage, on a 1921 Harley, placed third and Xavier Muriel took fourth astride a 1913 Perry Mack.
Inspired by early twentieth-century board-track racers, the Sons of Speed race hearkens back to a stripped down, wide-open approach to motorcycle riding. Each racer sat astride identical hand-built racing chassis holding pre-1925 1,000cc American V-Twin engines, and most racers customized their machines by fabricating handlebars, exhaust, fenders, foot pegs and fuel/oil tanks. This was and is motorcycle racing at its harrowing, blood-chilling best.
The third Sons of Speed race is already set for October 21st at New Smyrna Speedway. Check out the Sons of Speed Facebook Event Page for updates and breaking news.
About Sons Of Speed
Sons Of Speed is a motorcycle race inspired by early twentieth-century board-track racing. Featuring stripped-down bikes with pre-1925 American V-Twin engines and a steeply banked racetrack, Sons Of Speed hearkens back to a wide-open, full-throttle, thrilling style of motorcycle racing.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– A man goes to a shrink and says, “Doctor, my wife is unfaithful to me.
Every evening, she goes to Larry’s bar and picks up men.
In fact, she sleeps with anybody who asks her! I’m going crazy.
What do you think I should do?”
“Relax,” says the Doctor, “take a deep breath and calm down.
Now, tell me, exactly where is Larry’s bar?”

MRF Friends and Supporters,
Yesterday, we received word that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has selected the 10 individuals that will serve a 2-year term on the Motorcyclist Advisory Council or MAC that was authorized in the highway bill or FAST Act.
You’ll recall that the MRF and its congressional champions raised concerns over the makeup of participants as there was only one seat dedicated to a motorcycle rights organization and the rest of the seats were slotted for experts in engineering, safety, construction and roadway design.
Below is the list of the 10 individuals that were selected. Not surprisingly, no one from the MRF is represented. This is disappointing to say the least. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) will serve as the one motorcycle association on the Council:
• Mr. James Baron: American Traffic Safety Services Association
• Mr. Michael Crow: Kansas Asphalt Pavement Association
• Dr. Chanyoung Lee: Center for Urban Transportation Research at University of South Florida
• Mr. Eric Line: Michigan Department of Transportation
• Ms. Jane Lundquist: Texas Department of Transportation
• Dr. Shane McLaughlin: Center for Automated Vehicle Systems at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
• Mr. Joel Provenzano: Florida Department of Transportation
• Mr. Michael Sayre: American Motorcyclist Association
• Dr. Craig Shankwitz: Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University
• Ms. Fay Taylor: Retired, Ohio Department of Transportation
Please note that the MRF will be following up to convey its disappointment to the FHWA as well as inquiring about the selection process. Further, the Council will meet in a public forum and the MRF WILL BE REPRESENTED AT EVERY MEETING. We will not be silenced. Our voices will be heard.
Lastly, if you have a personal relationship with any of the individuals that will serve on the Council, please contact me asap.
This fight isn’t over.

COMMENT FROM A BROTHER– I see you been busy . Sturgis , Bonneville and ect. ect . You always give a view about present events and everybody is entitled to an opinion . Put a bunch of bikers in a bar and there are always more opinions than there are bikers .
That lasts long enough until one of them decides to hit some one with an glass beer pitcher or a long neck bottle . Ouch . That’s all folks.
Being an old southern guy , it just ticks me off in telling other folks how to live . We use to have freedom of speech but the web took that away from us . Once you print it on the web, you are accountable for it.
The monuments of our fore fathers are being torn down left and right . Wait until the native American decides to tell you that the monuments of Custard or Grant offends those of us that come from native heritage and tell you to tear those down . What are you gonna do brother ?
They are no different than Lee or Jackson. We are so busy minding other folks business when we need to be minding ours. Politics just make me mad. Like Mr. Green says,” My secret is that I am always mad.”
The best medicine is like you always say.” Let’s ride.” The further we go the better off we are . TKOB

About Bad Uncle Monkey’s post on recent events and the growing noise in America….
I saw an Editorial Cartoon which summed up America’s fate. The President had two large red buttons ready to press in front of him. One button was labelled “Civil War 2” and the other button read “World War 3”. Both are most likely now than ever in past 30 years.

1.
to converse informally; chat.
2.
Psychiatry. to engage in confabulation.
QUOTES
In the large room, where several different groups had been formed, and the hum of voices and of laughter was loud, these two young persons might confabulate … without attracting attention.
ORIGIN
Confabulate has a straightforward origin in the Latin verb confabulari “to converse, discuss,” which in turn is a compound of fabulari “to talk, chat” (the source of Spanish hablar and Portuguese falar “to speak”). Fabulari is formed from the noun fabula “story, narration,” which in turn derives from the simple verb fari “to speak.”
The Latin root fa- derives from the Proto-Indo-European root bha-, which is very well represented in the classical languages: Latin, e.g., fama “fame,” fatum “fate” and Greek, e.g., ph?me (dialect pha´ma) “utterance, report, fame” (as in Polýphemos “much spoken of, famous,” and the name of the Cyclops in the Odyssey) and ph?ne “sound, voice” (as in telephone, microphone).
Confabulate entered English in the early 17th century.
BUZZ ON THE INDUSTRY–
Call it Industrial Darwinism if you wish. But the business world is really all about the survival of the fittest. I have questioned for a few years how the motorcycle industry could support so many manufacturers, distributors and magazines. I now believe we are about to have a serious shift and downsizing.
I predict a growing number of changes in the motorcycle industry in the next year or so.
Too many motorcycle-industry businesses are over finanically over leveraged and will not be able to carry the debt. Others seem to be poorly managed. But others look healthy, creative and sustainable.
I expect more consolidation of big name motorcycle industry brands, some companies going out of buisness, and a very significant reduction of motorcycle magazines.
Paisano (Easyriders Magazine, V-Twin Magazine, Wrench Magazine, Road Iron Magazine) has announced they are folding all their motorcycle magazines except Easyriders, which they are reducing from 12 to 9 or 10 issues a year (and Tattoo to 4 times).
Bonnier (Cycle World Magazine, Motorcyclist Magazine, Hot Bike Magazine, Baggers Magazine, Sport Rider Magazine, etc) has been cutting back on their magazine sizes and frequencies. They just announced they are folding Sport Rider, and I expect more radical cuts in staff and product there.
So what does this all mean? I believe the motorcycle industry is ripe for a “rightsizing” where there will be a rebalancing of supply and demand.
As demand for motorcycles, motorcycle parts and motorcycle services continue to decline, so does the financial support of those who serve these markets.
We at the growing family of American Iron media (American Iron Magazine, American Iron Garage, American Iron Salute, and American Iron Power magazines, plus our growing on-line operations) are working hard to understand and react to these changes with strategic and creative ways.
We’d like to thank everyone involved with the amazing world of motorcycles for your support as we move ahead into the future.
If you have read this far, I’d appreciate your reaction and suggestions, also please feel free to share this post.

INDIA BECOMES WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER
India has dethroned China from a long reign as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, having already overtaken China to become the largest domestic motorcycle market three years ago.
The growth curve is continuing, as India’s growing domestic market and partnerships with English and European bike builders have put the country at the forefront of worldwide two-wheeled production.
While overall new motorcycle sales in the U.S. have been about 500,000 a year, and around 125,000 are sold in the United Kingdom, the total sales of machines made in India for the last financial year came to 17.6 million – more every three days than are sold in the UK in a year; more every 11 days than are sold annually in America.
Meanwhile, China’s domestic motorcycle market has been in decline for five years as government policy has incentivized electric bicycle sales and denied motorcycles access to city centers across China.
Conversely, the relentless growth of motorcycle sales in India is beginning to reshape the global marketplace. According to New Atlas, sales within India grew 6.9% last year, thanks to a fast-growing 1.32 billion domestic population that is quickly urbanizing and emerging from poverty — India has the fastest GDP growth of any major country. A massive India-wide road construction program is also fueling car and bike sales, just as it did in America a century ago.
Currently India’s domestic motorcycle marketplace is dominated by sub-125cc scooters and motorcycles, but larger capacity “luxury” classes are taking an increasing share as the market matures. Royal Enfield, built in India for the past 62 years, sold more than 700,000 motorcycles last year, a figure nearly equal to the combined worldwide sales of Harley-Davidson, KTM, BMW, Triumph, and Ducati, and their production target for this fiscal year is 900,000.

NMA ALERT— Civil Asset Forfeiture takes a Turn.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul recently wrote an editorial on civil asset forfeiture (CAF) and his opening paragraph says it all.
“Innocent until proven guilty” is the bedrock of America jurisprudence. Civil asset forfeiture, a legal process in which government confiscates your property without a guilty verdict, turns that justice on its head.
In mid-July, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Justice Department would now make it easier for local law enforcement to seize cash and property from crime suspects and reap the rewards. Sessions wants to increase the scope of CAF and reverse a 2015 ban on adoptive seizures, which occur when law enforcement officers circumvent state limitations by turning cash and property over to the federal law enforcement in exchange for up to 80 percent of the proceeds.
If the attorney general is successful, major damage will be done to the constitutional rights of individuals in the United States.
Civil asset forfeiture has quite a long history which probably started in medieval times. The modern U.S. version began in the 1970’s in an attempt to confiscate cash and property from drug lords. Somehow the practice has morphed into any alleged criminal’s property being fair game for government confiscation if law enforcement thinks that property (including cash) has been used in a crime, regardless of whether criminal charges have been filed. In order to get that property back, the owner has to petition civil court and prove that the property is unconnected to any criminal activity or other words, innocent.
The Fifth Amendment protects American’s due process but CAF allows law enforcement to take cash and property without first proving guilt. The US Supreme Court recently has ruled affirmatively for Fifth Amendment rights in several cases this year and for the critical doctrine of “Innocent until proven guilty.” In an entirely different case, Justice Clarence Thomas commented that CAF frequently targets the poor and other groups least able to defend themselves and their property in civil courts.
The Nevada Policy Research Institute released a report this month that showed two-thirds of forfeitures in Las Vegas were made in zip codes where the average poverty rate is 27 percent and the average nonwhite population is 42 percent. According to the study, a little more than half of the forfeitures in Las Vegas involved assets valued below $1,000.
In a bid to end a class action lawsuit, the city of Philadelphia agreed last month to voluntarily stop using property and cash seized to fund both the District Attorney’s Office and the Police Department. Instead any asset seized will be used to fund drug treatment programs, drug-abuse prevention programs and to alleviate blight in communities besieged by the drug trade. Institute for Justice Attorney Milad Emam recently wrote in an op-ed, “As long as forfeiture proceeds can fund Pennsylvania law enforcement’s salaries and other benefits, forfeiture will continue to be out of control.” The Institute of Justice says they will continue their fight despite the city’s recent concession.
The Department of Justice, along with a few state and city governments, aim to degrade the constitutional rights of citizens. We mustn’t let them.

Monster Garage 50th
This is still one of my most beautiful machines. I’m currently setting up my home garage, where I will be doing custom building. I’m in need of a picture of this chop for the garage. While searching pictures I ran into this site again.
I still tell stories of riding and servicing this Chopper while, at New Orleans Harley. Prior to my experience with this Chopper it was my background on my computer, for almost 2 years.
I still remember how it felt walking in to that show room and there it was to the left right next to the front door.

INTERNAL THROTTLE FROM NASH— I received a call the other day about a custom internal throttle. Here’s another manufacturer.
This is as close to Analog Cruise Control as it gets! Fully machined out of mild steel and covered with a black oxide coating to prevent rusting. Both bearings inside the throttle are stainless steel. Three features of our sticky throttle make it a cut above the rest:
Handmade by Nash Motorcycle Company right here in the US of A.
There is no other throttle on the market that provides cruise control. Just pull the throttle, sit back, and enjoy the ride. No more carpal tunnel in your wrist! This internal throttle can also be run without the cruise control option, by simply removing the nylon insert.
Ease of installation. Our throttle can be installed by anyone who has a saw and a couple of allen wrenches. Please read installation instructions for more details on how to install.
Please note that our throttle may have compatibility issues with billet grips. Outer dia. of throttle is 1 1/8″. Please call for more info or help with fitment.

A man goes home to his wife, after being fired from his job at a chips factory
The wife acts surprised, because the man has been employee of the month for 13 months in a row.
She asks “What happened?”
“I got fired for putting my penis in the potato cutter. It’s been a dream of mine, and I couldn’t resist it anymore”, the man replied.
The wife, even more surprised after hearing what happened, asked if everything is okay with his penis.
“Yes everything is fine with the penis”, he replied.
“What about the potato cutter?”, she asked.
A bit ashamed, he replied “she got fired as well.”

PEEL OUT— This will be an interesting day. I’m headed to a memorial for a wealthy friend, who took over his dad’s business after being a jackass in school. Funny guy and a very sharp guy, but a great family man who loved boats, sailing and Catalina Island.
Then I may point my Indian toward the Valley where a young man is turning 30. He hasn’t treated his life well, but he’s smart and can pull it together anytime he chooses, if he doesn’t hurt himself in the process.
I watched an evil movie last night about the Nazis planning to annihilate all the Jews on the planet. My mother had a slogan she pounded into us when we used the word, “Hate.”
She said, “You don’t hate anything. You may dislike it, but you don’t hate it or them.” Think about that for a minute.
Think about all the hate on the planet. Our forefathers recognized these issues and that’s why they pushed for freedom and equality. It’s amazing. Right now we have bicycle groups who hate motorists. Like the Nazis hating the Jews, the radical muslims hate us. The citizens hate loud pipes. The environmentalists hate the polluters. The straights hated bikers and hippies.
Hate is a waste of creative energy. Follow my mother’s rule and go build another motorcycle, or go for a ride.
Ride Free Forever,
