Hey,
I’m torn this morning. We had a discussion last night with Doctor Hamster, Tobey, and the Redhead, about this year, projects and obstacles. Once in a while a conversation brings shit to light, like a cherry bomb in your soup.
We started with the building problems, discussed our Salt Torpedo effort and issues, my Chance book final edit, and revamping Bikernet onto a more user friendly format. Suddenly, I saw where some of my cumulative 2016 challenges originated. Hell, I have more creative goals planned for this year, but these are the majors and I need to stay focused.
Hopefully, the Building’s issues will be resolved this coming week. But then I may be jumping into the Bikernet van and hauling to Houston post haste.
I was torn between mentioning the above and discussing bad decisions. We all make mistakes and unfortunate decisions. As the master says, “All bad decisions lead to opportunities to better ourselves.” So, every effort contains positive challenges.
Let’s hit the news, quick. I’ve got shit to do.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT– Not enough cops to deal with bikers says their Western Australia union
A reduction of officers in the WA Police fraud and gang crime squad is leading to a build-up of cases and a lack of officers to deal with bikers, a parliamentary committee has been told.
WA Police Union president George Tilbury made the comments during testimony to the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee.
In his testimony, Mr Tilbury referred to a recent incident in which 14 officers had been sent to deal with about 120 bikers.
Outside the hearing, he said there should have been closer to 60 officers.
“There have been recent occasions where they’ve had interaction with members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, where they haven’t had the number of police officers that they need to deal with that situation,” he said.
“That is not good enough and something needs to be done to address it.”
QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– Because I retired about a year ago, when I saw an advertisement in the paper this morning about a position available for a Gynecological Assistant, I went down to the Job Center in Fayetteville NC. and asked the clerk there for details.
The clerk pulled up the file and read; “The job entails getting the ladies ready for the gynecologist. You have to help the women out of their underwear, lay them down and carefully wash their private regions, then apply shaving foam and gently shave off the hair, then rub in soothing oils so they’re ready for the gynecologist’s examination.”
“The annual salary is $65,000, and you’ll have to go to Billings , Montana.”
“Good grief; is that where the job is?”
“No sir — that’s where the end of the line is right now.”

NRA REPORTS– Band Member Targeted in Paris Terror Attacks Stresses Importance of Armed Self-Defense.
On Tuesday, heavy metal rock group Eagles of Death Metal made a triumphant return to Paris. The American band performed before a sold-out crowd at the city’s Olympia music hall only three months after terrorist gunmen attacked an Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Bataclan theater, killing 89.
By all accounts the concert was an enormous success, but even before the band took the stage, Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes made international headlines with his impassioned statements on behalf of the right to armed self-defense.
In an interview with France’s iTélé news network, Hughes questioned France’s gun control laws and suggested that an armed citizenry could save lives during a terrorist attack. An at times noticeably upset Hughes told the interviewer:
Did your French gun control stop a single [expletive] person from dying at the Bataclan? And if anyone can answer yes, I’d like to hear it, because I don’t think so. I think the only thing that stopped it was some of the bravest men that I’ve ever seen in my life charging head-first into the face of death with their firearms.
Maybe, I know people will disagree with me, but it just seems like God made men and women, and that night guns made them equal. And I hate it that it’s that way. I think the only way my mind has been changed is that maybe that until nobody has guns everybody has to have them.
Because I’ve never seen anyone that’s ever had one dead, and I want everyone to have access to them, and I saw people die that maybe could have lived. I don’t know, but I wish I knew for sure that if they could have had a better chance, because there were some real angels, real wonderful people at that show.
Additionally, Hughes told Agence France Press that he exercises his Right-to-Carry while stateside, noting, “I don’t go anywhere in America without a gun anymore. That sucks. And I’m not paranoid. I’m not a cowboy… but I wanna be prepared.”
There will be those that question Hughes’ statements despite his first-hand experience with terrorist violence. However, those eager to dismiss the words of a heavy metal rocker should know that when it comes to strategy for combatting terrorist attacks Hughes is in some very good company.
In an interview with ABC News following the 2013 terror attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, then-Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble proposed an armed citizenry as a potential means of fighting terrorism. Noble told the interviewer:
Societies have to think about how they’re going to approach the problem. One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that. Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.
Noble went on to say,
Ask yourself: If that wasn’t Denver, Col. but if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly? What I’m saying is it makes police around the world question their views on gun control. It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?’ This is something that has to be discussed…
For me it’s a profound question. People are quick to say ‘gun control, people shouldn’t be armed,’ etc., etc. I think they have to ask themselves: ‘Where would you have wanted to be? In a city where there was gun control and no citizens armed if you’re in a Westgate mall, or in a place like Denver or Texas?’
Unfortunately, in the wake of the Paris attacks the bureaucrats of the European Commission have taken the exact opposite position and have expedited legislation to toughen European Union gun laws. The proposed restrictions would ban semi-automatic firearms for civilian use.
Following the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., governments both in the Unites States and abroad should be finding ways to empower citizens to provide for their own defense, rather than using such events as an excuse to gin up support for more gun control. It is foolish to think that terrorists intent on slaughtering scores of innocents could ever be impeded by even the most stringent gun controls, but policymakers can at the very least respect the rights of citizens to use the tools necessary to fight back.
I think they should add training and education to the mix. Let’s train citizens in gun use and educate them on self defense. Now we’re talking an empowered and confident America.–Bandit
REPORTERS REQUEST– Hi Bandit,
Dennis Johnson who used to work at the Daily Breeze told me about you. I’m a freelance public radio reporter who also happens to be working right now on two story-based audio walking tours of Hermosa Beach. One is about the early history of Hermosa, but the other is about the counter-culture there, from The Insomniac to the surfers to the bikers who used to hang out at Taco Bell.
I’m trying to track down old-timer bikers who were part of the Hells Angels who hung out in Hermosa in the 1950s and ’60s, who might be willing to share their stories of what it was like there. Dennis said you might be a good person to talk to about this and might be able to at least point me in the right direction or know of some people. Would you be willing to chat with me or help me find a couple of old-timers with tales to tell?

“$10 a pill,” answered the son.
“I don’t care,” said Grandpa, “I’d still like to try one, and before we leave in the

HIP SURGERY REPORT FROM THE REED CLINIC– I’ve been doing therapy for my hip three times a week. It’s sore when I first stand up but once I get going I can almost walk normally.
I have a Buell blast to use as a pit bike if I had got to El Mirage before I fucked myself up. I couldn’t get it out of my van until a couple of days ago but when I did I had a ride. PS. do you think they will have any meetings at Bonneville this year? I spent years making my V-bike very good round bends, but recently I modified it to be better in a straight line. It’s lower and I made a really heavy longer swingarm, etc. etc. etc. I am reluctant to re-modify it, if there is a chance of riding it on the salt, I haven’t got many years left to do it.

Road Trip Bundle, El Diablo Run: A Mexican Motorcycle Adventure Movie
Ever wonder what happens when a few hundred bike riders with an insatiable taste for fire, beer and mayhem ride hand-built choppers across twisty, pitted tarmac from SoCal to Baja and back?
The El Diablo Run gives freedom-lovers a chance to go places and do things that are simply not possible at home in the USA. Follow this eclectic band of Diablo runners as they comb the beaches, brothels and back alleys of San Felipe and Ensenada on a quest for cheap tacos, loose women and good times.
Free to Wander
It’s not a fancy build movie, but rather a simple poetic documentary film about the chopper life. This film is the first solo offering from builder/artist Rich Grabbe and while it is definitely an indie production, it has a tone and spirit that all bikers will connect with. Filmed entirely in the Midwest of America and in New York City, this film shows that old school choppers and the men who ride them are alive and well!

MORE NRA NEWS, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia 1936-2016–
Longtime U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a stalwart defender of the U.S. Constitution and author of the critically important majority opinion in the District of Columbia v. Heller case, passed away on Feb. 13 at the age of 79.
When Justice Elena Kagan was dean of Harvard Law School, she explained Justice Scalia’s monumental influence: “His views on textualism and originalism, his views on the role of judges in our society, on the practice of judging, have really transformed the terms of legal debate in this country.” In short, “He is the justice who has had the most important impact over the years on how we think and talk about law.”
Justice Scalia’s landmark opinion in Heller affirmed the individual Second Amendment right, including the right to own handguns for self-defense. That decision was made possible not just by what Justice Scalia did in 2008, but by a career dedicated to defending the Constitution.
As a law professor at the University of Virginia and the University of Chicago, as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and then for 30 years as a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Antonin Scalia was guided by two complementary principles: textualism and originalism.
“Textualism” means that whenever courts interpret any legal document—a Constitution, a statute or a contract—judges should consider first and foremost the precise words of the document. So in Heller, Scalia observed that the Second Amendment protects “the right of the people.”
He explained that the exact same phrase also appears elsewhere in the Bill of Rights: in the First Amendment, “the right of the people peaceably to assemble;” in the Fourth Amendment, “the right of the people to be secure” from unreasonable searches and seizures. In the First and Fourth amendments, everyone agrees that “the right of the people” refers to an ordinary individual right belonging to all Americans. Thus, the text of the Constitution shows that the Second Amendment is clearly an individual right for all Americans.
Justice Scalia’s other guiding principle was the original public meaning of the Constitution.
What did a given constitutional provision mean to the American people when they ratified it and made it “the supreme law of the land”? Justice Scalia did not invent originalism, an interpretive technique that is as old as the Constitution. But when President Ronald Reagan nominated Scalia in 1986, originalism had been in eclipse for decades. Supposedly, originalism was old-fashioned and outdated.
Over the course of the next three decades, Justice Scalia would explain that originalism, while not perfect, is the best method for judges to discern and enforce the law that the people created and to guard against judges arbitrarily imposing their own policy preferences under the guise of legal interpretation.
Justice Scalia’s majority opinion in Heller cited a mountain of public evidence that Americans in the Founding Era and the Early Republic understood the Second Amendment to guarantee an individual right. In dissent, Justice Stevens had little to work with, and he was reduced to arguing that even if the Second Amendment protects an individual right, it should yield to whatever the government considers necessary for public safety. The majority rejected that approach. “[T]he enshrinement of constitutional rights,” Scalia wrote, “necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table.”
Unlike some previous Supreme Court justices, Scalia was neither pompous nor aloof. A father of nine and a grandfather of 28, he told young lawyers that there is more to life than work, and they should remember their duties to family and community.
Justice Scalia was not only an ardent and brilliant defender of Second Amendment rights, he exercised those freedoms as a marksman and avid hunter. Indeed, his sudden death, which stunned all those who cherish our guaranteed civil rights, occurred while he was on a hunting trip.
If our Second Amendment endures into the 22nd century, Justice Antonin Scalia will deserve much of the credit, and he will be studied and emulated by judges and law students. Today, we can be thankful for the legacy of a great justice and an exemplary man.

THE CLASSIC ELECTRIC VW– A California Company Is Actually Making VW Bugs Fast–VW Bugs from the ‘50s and ‘60s are many things, but they are not fast. Most of them had small powerplants, and that’s all they ever needed simply because these cars didn’t need to go fast!
But a firm in California (where else, right?) is taking those old VWs and are snipping out the gasoline powered bits and then swapping in an electric engine. The effect is that these cars are now a lot more reliable and are actually fast!
QUICK, ONE MORE JOKE FROM THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– One day a father, on his way home from work suddenly remembers that it’s his daughter’s birthday. He pulls over to a Toy Shop and asks the sales person, “How much for one of those Barbies in the display window?”
The salesperson answers, “Which one do you mean, Sir? We have: Work Out Barbie for $19.95, Shopping Barbie for $19.95, Beach Barbie for $19.95, Disco Barbie for $19.95, Astronaut Barbie for $19.95, Skater Barbie for $19.95, and Divorced Barbie for $265.95.”
The amazed father asks: “It’s what? Why is the Divorced Barbie $265.95 and the others only $19.95?”
The annoyed, salesperson rolls her eyes, sighs, and answers, “Sir…, Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken’s Truck, Ken’s House, Ken’s Fishing Boat, Ken’s Furniture, Ken’s Dog, Ken’s Computer, one of Ken’s Friends, and a key chain made from Ken’s testicles.”

STAY FOCUSED— I tried to have a conversation recently with a stepdaughter and her daughter. One is 28 and the other is six. The six-year-old wouldn’t sit still and the other is burnin’ daylight.
I tried to explain how important focus is. Growing up I had lots of opportunities to learn many things, some I focused on, others I ignored, and chased girls. Later in life you realize how important it is to focus. It doesn’t mean you can’t chase girls, but when it’s time to focus, focus goddamnit.
Speaking of focus, I put my Indian up on a shop lift for the first time. I wanted to install a Motherwell luggage rack over the rear fender and perhaps a NightRider EFI system. I discovered a problem with the spacers on the Indian rail and the most-excellent Motherwell rack. I put in a call to the factory and started to make spacers.
Then I started to read and understand the NightRider EFI system of monitoring the exhaust O2 sensors and their ability to modify the air/fuel mixture. I called Rich Worley at American Biker in Charleston, SC to ask if he installed any of these and how they worked out. This system gives you the opportunity to modify fuel delivery to the front and separately to the rear cylinder.
Rich mentioned a new set of cams from the factory and a remapping download. That sounded exciting. We are investigating. I’ll bring you more reports.
