Hey,
Interesting times. I was just about to write something and my politically correct, chickenshit meter started to ping me. I’m hesitant to write about terrorism, yet it surrounds us. I’m squeamish about writing about religions; don’t want to piss anyone off. It’s difficult to write about science, history, race, you name it. I suppose I’m lucky to be a biker.
We are very lucky to be bikers, the more I think about it. We need to spend some time trying to keep this hobby, lifestyle, industry alive. I do believe our industry is one of the last bastions of freedom still alive in this country. Speaking of freedom, that would be my priority for any elected official. Their first and foremost job should be to advance, recognize, and embrace freedom, or go home.
Let’s hit the news:
GETTYSBURG BIKE WEEK Books Mustang Sally For 15th Year Anniversary Rally–GBW Looking For Suggestions Via Social Media For Potential Music Acts.
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (September 11, 2015) – Gettysburg Bike Week has gotten an early start on next year’s 15th Anniversary Rally by securing the services of Nashville country music power act Mustang Sally.
“They’ve played Gettysburg Bike Week before, and they’re one of the best live bands we’ve ever had,” said event coordinator Kelly Shue. “The crowd absolutely loved them last time, and we’re thrilled to have them back.”
With the return to the Allstar Events Complex and top-flight musical acts, entertainment and bike shows, this year’s Gettysburg Bike Week 2015 proved an unmitigated success, and GBW organizers want to take it even further for 2016’s 15th anniversary rally. To that end, GBW is soliciting suggestions from rally goers via social media for potential music acts and entertainment. Anyone can tweet ideas to @GburgBikeWk.
And, of course no rally would be complete without great riding, and Gettysburg has some of the best. Whether riders want to see historic battlegrounds or just hit the road for a great cruise, hundreds of miles of the best riding in the East surrounds Gettysburg.

FACEBOOK VS. BIKERNET—Hey, I have a problem with Facebook. I don’t know how it works. I receive notices about 99 new folks on my page, but when I go there I don’t know what to do, and the damn thing is so busy, I don’t know which way to turn.
Can someone help the old guy?
MEMORY FROM MRS. BALL— I try to spend some time with my 93-year-old ma every Friday. She started to tell me about rhymes she taught as kids. I decided to write them down each week share them with you and save them. Hang on:
“One Bright Day In The Middle Of The Night (Handclapping Rhym)
One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise
and ran to save the two dead boys.
If you don’t believe this lie is true,
ask the blind man, he saw it, too.

THE HOME OF TWISTED STATISTICS–
Proponents of aggressive speed enforcement routinely trot out the old saw that speeding causes one-third of all traffic fatalities. Predictably, this dubious assertion showed up in the bogus IIHS speed camera report we deconstructed in last week’s newsletter.
We say dubious because there is ample evidence to show that speed is a contributing factor in only a small percentage of highway fatalities and that other, often overlooked factors play a more prominent role.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) considers a crash to be speeding-related “if the driver was charged with a speeding-related offense or if an officer indicated that racing, driving too fast for conditions, or exceeding the posted speed limit was a contributing factor in the crash.”
This definition is more specific than previous versions but still leaves much to interpretation. Accident statistics are compiled from police reports in which officers must often make assumptions about accident causes without actually having witnessed the accident. We should also note that accident statistics distinguish between traffic fatalities and fatal accidents, but according to NHTSA, speed is a contributing factor in about one-third of fatal accidents as well.
However, if you look at crash data collected by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), you find something very different. DHSMV collects information on all auto accidents in the state and provides a detailed breakout of various contributing factors.
According to DHSMV, “Exceeded Stated Speed Limit” was one of up to three possible contributing factors, but not necessarily the primary cause, in only 4.2 percent of fatal crashes from 2004-2013, and “Exceeded Safe Speed Limit” was a factor in only 6.1 percent. Total them up and you find, quite conservatively we might add, that only about 10 percent of all fatal crashes in Florida over that ten-year period had anything to do with speed.
So, why the big discrepancy between the national numbers and the Florida numbers? Maybe Florida accident investigators exercise more discretion before simply checking the speed box on an accident form. We know that different agencies/authorities define their terms differently. DHSMV defines a Fatal Traffic Crash as a traffic crash “that results in one or more fatalities within thirty days of occurrence.” NHTSA uses something similar, but the National Safety Council, for example, counts deaths that occur within one year of the accident whether that accident occurred in traffic or in a parking lot or even in someone’s driveway.
In Florida’s case, it’s instructive to look at contributing accident factors even more prevalent than speeding. For example, “Careless Driving” contributed to 20-25 percent of fatal accidents over that same 10-year period, and “Failed/Yield Right-of-Way” contributed to approximately 10-15 percent. DHSMV defines Careless Driving as failure to operate a vehicle “in a careful and prudent manner, having regard for width, grade, curves, corners, traffic, and all other circumstances, so as not to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person.”
The prevalence of careless driving and failure-to-yield violations stems from a lack of proper driver training. That means that up to 40 percent of highway fatalities in Florida could, and should, be addressed through improved driver education—not through more speed traps or more red-light cameras.
Why not more driver education? Because it’s not a money-maker. In fact, it would cost, but wouldn’t the dividend of safer roads be worth it in the long run?

It’s all about collecting data to support more regulation and higher budgets. What if the effort was aimed at supporting freedom? The NMA could also work with our motorcycle group in Europe. They discovered a percentage of accidents or injuries to be infrastructure based, like curve barriers, signs, signal posts, etc.–Bandit

NEW YORK MYKE RIDES FROM SAN DIEGO TO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER IN NY TO HONOR 9/11–
This was taken at midnight in front of One World Trade Center. You might be able to see the name on the bldg. Obviously raining, but not another soul, just me, Petrina, a handful of cops and a couple of Japanese tourists.
Of course the morning had all the televised events and such but traditionally there’s been hundreds of bikes at midnight, a tradition started in ’02 when The Wind&Fire MC and other firefighter clubs went across the country to pay our respects.
Usually NYC Hog showed up but even they weren’t there. Anyway on my way back to San Diego now, Sad, but just another day in the life of NYC! See ya!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SUPPORT AMA– AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame welcomes Harley-Davidson Motor Company as presenting sponsor of induction ceremony. Tickets on sale now for Oct. 17 ceremony in Orlando, Fla.
The American Motorcyclist Association welcomes Harley-Davidson Motor Company as presenting sponsor of the 2015 Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Harley-Davidson, on Saturday, Oct. 17, during the American International Motorcycle Expo at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
“Not only is the history of Harley-Davidson Motor Company forever intertwined with the growth of motorcycling in America, the company itself is a great American success story,” said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. “In many ways, that success was driven by the work of former Harley-Davidson CEO and 2015 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee Richard Teerlink, who helped shepherd the Motor Company during a significant period of growth in the 1980s and 1990s.”
Tickets to the 2015 Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Harley-Davidson, are available now at www.motorcyclemuseum.org. Regular entry is just $25 per person. VIP tickets that include an exclusive reception, reserved seating and one-day AIMExpo admission are $90 per person.
“Harley-Davidson is thrilled to sponsor an event that honors one of our own,” said Harley-Davidson Vice President of Parts, Accessories and Customization David Foley, who is also an AMA board member. “Rich Teerlink’s leadership through some critical times in our company’s history, including taking the company public in 1989, laid the foundation for the strong company we are today.”
In addition to Teerlink, the Hall of Fame Class of 2015 includes road racing champion John Kocinski, off-road racing champion Rodney Smith, entrepreneur and industry patron John Parham, dirt tracker Alex Jorgensen and longtime Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. race team manager Keith McCarty.
The event also will honor three-time road racing World Champion Wayne Rainey as the 2015 Hall of Fame Legend. Rainey, who himself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, is the president of MotoAmerica, the new home of the AMA Superbike Championship.
The 2015 Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Harley-Davidson, is held in conjunction with AIMExpo Oct. 15-18. The AIMExpo is a diverse powersports event that is open to trade and media Oct. 15-16 and open to the general public Oct. 17-18.

I am a disabled biker, a recent above the knee amputee. I know how difficult it is to pick up the pieces after a traumatic accident. Even though my accident happened over five years ago, I haven’t been able to afford to buy a trike or bike.
I do hope to ride again, but at age 61 and limited resources I am not so sure it will happen. The VA has no programs to help anyone with my credit score, and I don’t want a hand out. The biggest problem is medical bills ruined my credit. I do have a house paid for and a few acres of raw mountain land, anyone have ideas?

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB FREEDOM FIGHT– South Australian bikers and relatives face ban on owning tattoo parlors.
Motorcycle club members and their relatives face bans from operating tattoo parlors in South Australia, and up to four years in prison if they ignore the new law the State Government wants to introduce.
Attorney-General John Rau will today introduce the legislation into State Parliament, following a pledge during the election campaign.
It resembles Queensland laws, introduced under that state’s former Newman led Liberal government, which have sparked court challenges from club members, and follows the July introduction of SA’s new draconian anti-association laws that outlawed 10 groups.
Rau said the move was the first time tattoo parlor ownership had been regulated and would “stamp out dodgy characters” who use such businesses “as a front for illegal activity and organized crime”.
Tattoo parlor operators would be “automatically and permanently disqualified” if they belonged to one of the 10 motorcycle clubs banned under state law, or were a “close associate” of someone who is.
The Government’s definition of “close associate” includes spouses, domestic partners, parents, brothers, sisters or children of declared motorcycle club members, or people who live with them.
It extends to people who members can “exercise control or significant influence over”.
Mr Rau said there was an option to apply for an exemption and that the “tough new laws” were needed to drive clubs out of the state.
“We need to tackle the issue of organized crime from every angle possible,” he said.
“This scheme is about cracking down on tattoo parlors that are used as a front for organized crime. Reputable tattoo operators are not a target.
Someone could also be disqualified from providing tattooing services for an “indefinite or specified period” by the Commissioner for Consumer Affairs if they have been a member or close associate of someone in an declared group at any time over the past five years.
Those who continue to operate when disqualified face a maximum penalty of four years imprisonment for an individual, and $250,000 fine for a body corporate.
Parlor operators will be required to provide information to the Commissioner for Consumer Affairs that can be used to determine whether a person is breaking the new laws.
Opposition legal affairs spokeswoman Vickie Chapman said she was “surprised” the Government was pressing ahead with the plans, saying it was an arbitrary move to target tattoo parlors.
“Irrespective of what the enterprise is that they (bikers) own, any cash businesses are vulnerable to infiltration to people who shouldn’t be in them,” she said. “It won’t resolve the problem.”
Ms. Chapman said the Queensland Government was reviewing its laws, with findings to be made public in coming weeks, and SA should wait to examine the outcome of that before acting.
She also warned such a broad definition of who is a “close associate” of a club member could capture innocent people with “no direct association except that they share the same grandfather”.

MSP: 26 FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS IN MAINE SO FAR–
NEWS CENTER, WCSH (new name Tegna Co old name Gannett Media)11:42 p.m.
EDT September 8
(NEWS CENTER) — According to Maine State Police, two more deaths resulting from motorcycle crashes brings this year’s motorcycle death
count in Maine to 26.
Caribou Police said a 40-year-old man was killed Monday when he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 89 in Caribou and the Somerset County
Sheriff’s Office said a 60-year-old man died Sunday from injuries he received in a motorcycle crash on August 30.
Those two deaths are in addition to the four people who were killed in three separate motorcycle crashes in Maine over the weekend, investigated by State Police. Those crashes took place in Falmouth, Lebanon and Hiram.
According to police, five people died on Maine roads during Labor Day weekend, all on motorcycles.
The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety said this will be the deadliest year for motorcycle deaths since 1991 when 34 people died that year in motorcycle crashes.
Keith Liberty, a sales manager at the Harley-Davidson dealer in Portland, said the rise in motorcycle crash deaths is concerning, but
not enough to stop bikers from riding.
“No matter what the statistics are, we’re still going to get on our motorcycles, and we’re still going to get out there and ride,” he said.
Liberty said riders can always be safer and more alert, but some of the responsibility falls on drivers too.
Pat Moody, Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northern New England, said drivers should look twice and make sure they’re not distracted.
He said bikers need to make good decisions too, pointing out that two of the biggest factors to fatal motorcycle crashes are speed and alcohol.
Moody also said motorcycles should wear safety gear and a helmet.
“You know that you’re a vulnerable road user. If you have a collision with a motor vehicle, there’s going to be some serious injury or death,
so do what you can to protect yourself.”
Moody said more people are riding motorcycles now than in previous years, but he also said it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what may be causing an increase in fatal crashes.

ELLIS WANTS TO SUCCEED FOR HIS CANCER-STRICKEN PSM OWNER PIPPIN– When the 2015 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season began, veteran competitor Chip Ellis had no plans of racing.
That changed just prior to the Southern Nationals May 15-17 in Atlanta – the third race of the season for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class – after he spoke with his long-time friend and fellow PSM racer and owner Junior Pippin.
“Another guy was supposed to ride Junior’s bike (at Atlanta) and he couldn’t make it,” Ellis said. “Junior asked me if I could ride it and we have been going ever since. I’ve known Junior forever.”
These days Pippin is more inspired than ever to help out Pippin. Pippin, 62, was diagnosed with nasal cancer shortly after the NHRA’s Route 66 Nationals July 9-12 in Chicago.
According to Ellis, Pippin’s cancer is inoperable and he will start chemotherapy and radiation Aug. 31.
“For us as a team, it gives us more motivation to want to do good,” Ellis said. “Junior is a real positive person and probably the most positive person I’ve ever met. We are full steam ahead and he’s going to go through his treatments and we are going to keep running his Buell and try and get him a Wally.”
Ellis will be piloting Pippin’s Buell at the U.S. Nationals (Sept. 2-7) at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Ellis said Pippin isn’t planning on attending the race at Indy. Pippin lives in Conyers, Ga., and he owns the Junior Pippin Trucking Company.
“It’s definitely more emotional now,” said Ellis, 45. “I love it when Junior is there because he always gets me pumped up and prepared. He’s also a rider himself and he’s been riding motorcycles longer than I’ve been alive. I learn from him all the time. I’m always learning something from him. He’s just a great guy to be around. We cut up and we laugh and have a good time and I miss him at the races.”
