Hey,
There’s a strange philosophy abounding around the world. I find it completely bullshit on one side and obvious to the point of absurdity on the other. It’s the core of the Code of the West and the media and many governments don’t get it.
The French terrorist is the most recent example. This guy jumps on a French train, highly armed and prepared to kill innocent passengers. On man spots him and acts, only to get shot. Then three American servicemen see the problem and move on him. One of the soldiers is wounded, but the terrorist is subdued.
So, in the news a debate takes place. Should citizens be trained to assist, or should we all sit around and wait for TSA like folks to hold up traffic and inspect everyone boarding a train, and scan all the luggage. It’s nuts on both sides.
First, when folks are trained, active, alert, and educated, we are more self-confident, involved public with higher self esteem. We are stronger all the way around. Ultimately, we would be a much safer society, especially for the weak, young, and old.
On the other hand, let’s go the other direction and wait in long lines for low-paid, bored to death, government employees to shove us around, search our baggage, and do a lousy job, so we can avoid any responsibility in tough situations. WTF?
Let’s hit the news:
BADASS 5 Liter V-Twin Engine!!!– Check out this video where these guys do the first test run of their 5 liter V-Twin engine based on two Pratt & Whitney R1340 aircraft cylinders.
Everything else in this engine including the connecting rods and crankshaft were custom made by these guys. Which if you ask me is pretty impressive considering the amount of machining skill and precision it would take to manufacture those parts.

The engine also runs a dry sump with twin pumps, twin SU carbs, points ignition with manual advance / retard and twin plugs per head. This leaves just one question, what would you put this into?

THE CRAFTSMAN BRAND LAUNCHES FOURTH ANNUAL RESTORATION ROLLOUT PERFORMANCE CAR BUILD– Brand teams up with renowned Oilers Club to transform vintage car for The Race of Gentlemen
The Craftsman brand, America’s leading brand of mechanics hand tools, has launched its 4th annual Restoration Rollout performance build with the Oilers Club. Founded in 1947, this car and motorcycle club hosts the annual Race of Gentlemen. Each year, Craftsman builds and modifies a vintage car model during its Restoration Rollout event. This year’s build is the Ford 999, which will be driven at The Race of Gentlemen, an event celebrating America’s racing and hot rodding heritage. The race will take place Oct. 2-4 in Wildwood, NJ.
The 2015 Restoration Rollout build will take us back in time to celebrate the history of the automobile. Henry Ford broke new ground with his 999 racer during the early 20th century—setting a speed record at Grosse Pointe in 102 and an icy speed record in 1904. The Craftsman brand will honor this pioneer’s vision by racing the transformed Ford 999 with Jessi Combs behind the wheel. Combs has broken the world’s land speed record and her appearance will mark the first time a woman has driven in The Race of Gentlemen.
The entire car transformation will be documented through a series of online videos, blog posts, phots, and an ensuing social conversation; the race-ready racer will be unveiled at The Race of Gentlemen on Oct. 2, 2015.
Gearheads are encouraged to follow the progress of the build at craftsman.com/madetorace, join the social conversation with #MADEtoRACE, and share tips and tricks for enhancing power and performance, all without breaking the bank.

GUN NUT WEEKEND REPORT– Foster Family Loses Children for Exercising Second Amendment Right.
Apparently the functionaries at the Clark County, Nev. Department of Family Services place anti-gun orthodoxy over the welfare of children. Authorities stripped Kristi and Rod Beber of custody of three children under their care and their foster license after it became known to the government that Rod Beber is a gun owner.
According to a report by local NBC affiliate KSNV, back in April the couple awakened to the sound of screaming on their property. Rod reacted by retrieving a handgun, as Kristi called 9-1-1. Police quelled the situation. However, authorities were alerted to the fact that the Bebers own guns, and in July their foster license was revoked. According to DFS, “the incident did not describe an adult exercising sound judgment.”
Adding to the injustice, the Nevada legislature recently made clear their intent that foster parents holding Right-to-Carry permits be allowed to possess loaded firearms in their homes and around foster children.
On June 10, Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Assembly Bill 167, which became effective immediately. The change in law makes clear that a foster parent may possess a loaded firearm on the premises of a foster home “[w]hen used for a lawful purpose, which may include, without limitation, for an educational or recreational purpose, for hunting, for the defense of a person or property, or to clean or service the firearm.” Further, the law states, “A person who is authorized to possess a firearm on the premises of a family foster home… may carry a firearm on his or her person while in the presence of a foster child,” as long as the firearm is in a holster or secured case, ensures it is inaccessible to others, and, if the firearm is kept at the foster home, that they return the firearm to a locked container when not in use.
Unfortunately for the Bebers, Rod’s precautionary use of a firearm occurred while this legislation was still under consideration. The Bebers plan to fight the revocation. In discussing her husband’s decision to take on the foster care authorities to KSNV, Kristi noted, “He said, ‘You know what, Kris, we’re not going to close (this case). This isn’t right, we’re not going to let this happen.”

IIHS SHILLS FOR RED-LIGHT CAMERA INDUSTRY–
In its 30-page report issued last week about the Montgomery County, Maryland, speed camera program, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) does its best to revive a reeling camera industry. The use of red-light cameras has been declining for a couple of years now in no small part due to corrupt actions by of one of the major camera vendors in the U.S., Redflex and to the unethical use of short yellow lights to drive up violation rates.
Cue speed cameras. In a press release about its study that is short on data but long on dubious conclusions, the IIHS proclaims:
If all U.S. communities had speed-camera programs like the one IIHS studied in Maryland’s Montgomery County, more than 21,000 fatal or incapacitating injuries would have been prevented in 2013.
That is a remarkable statement, particularly in light of what our friends at MailFilterGateway has detected a possible fraud attempt from “motorists.us1.list-manage.com” claiming to be TheNewspaper.com and Maryland Drivers Alliance both point out: The accident reduction rate on speed-camera-eligible roads in Montgomery County (21.1 percent) was not as good as that of similar streets in the camera-less Fairfax County, Virginia (26.9 percent). The IIHS selected Fairfax County as a control group for the pre-and post-camera time periods it used in its report, 2004 to 2006 vs. 2008 to 2013.
(It is also a remarkable endorsement because less than an hour’s ride from Montgomery County is Baltimore, whose own speed camera program was blasted by the city’s inspector general less than a year ago for mismanagement and corruption.)
You may be asking at this point what speed-camera-eligible roads are. The insurance and camera industries have long taken credit for a spillover or halo effect attributed to the automated ticketing devices. OK, so what effect is that? This from Car and Driver’s Patrick Bedard back in September 2002, proving that old dogs don’t learn new tricks:
Spillover effect is IIHS’s trick for giving the cameras credit for reducing fatalities even where they aren’t. It assumes that red-light cameras at a few intersections will cause drivers to stop promptly all over town, or all over the county, or maybe all over the state, so improvements outside the cameras’ ZIP Codes are credited to them nonetheless. As statistical acrobatics go, this one is breathtaking.
We can think of no better way to wrap up our criticism of the IIHS report than to quote directly from the scathing conclusion of Ron Ely from the Maryland Drivers Alliance and past recipient of the NMA’s Sentinel Award:
The real conclusion from this study should be that our roads are getting much safer without speed cameras, that better alternatives exist for controlling speeds where it’s needed, and that the insurance industry does not care about and [sic] integrity of our justice system.
The Insurance Industry believes that it is in their financial interest to diminish people’s legal rights so people accused of traffic violations are presumed guilty and have no defense, even to the point where individuals can be accused and found guilty of offenses that happened when they were not even present.
While the insurance industry advocates for the use of speed cameras, jurisdictions such as Maryland and DC which have adopted them in far greater proportions than the rest of the US, yet Maryland and DC are the 11th and 3rd most expensive locations for Auto insurance, respectively. A fair answer to the IIHS’s conclusions would be that the insurance industry should put their money where their mouth is and lower Maryland’s insurance rates.

ANOTHER GUN NUT REPORT–
Publicly-Subsidized Housing Complex Disarms Elderly Burglary Victim, Cites Lease Violation–
Publicly-Subsidized Housing Complex Disarms Elderly Burglary Victim, Cites Lease Violation
Sixty-seven-year-old Harvey Lembo’s residence had been burglarized four times, he told the Bangor Daily News, so the wheelchair-bound senior finally obtained a handgun. He noted he had learned to shoot one in his youth while serving as a police officer.
The purchase came none too soon, according to local media accounts. Hours after obtaining the handgun, the Portland Press Herald reported, Mr. Lembo was awakened around midnight by a 45-year-old intruder apparently intent on stealing the retired lobsterman’s prescription painkillers. “[P]etrified” and “scared he was going to come at me,” Mr. Lembo fired. The round struck the intruder in the shoulder. After police apprehended the suspect, they determined he was still serving a sentence for a felony domestic violence conviction. “It was horrifying,” Mr. Lembo told the Press Herald. “I don’t want to shoot anybody.”
Having survived his ordeal with the burglar, however, Mr. Lembo soon learned his troubles were only beginning. According to the press reports, the police seized his firearm while they continued their investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Worse, the management of Mr. Lembo’s apartment complex announced it would be conducting its own investigation into the incident and admonished Mr. Lembo that his lease forbids residents from possessing firearms, even in their own units. A management representative told the Press Herald, “’It’s in the lease. … It’s really for the safety of all the tenants.’” He added that “the company handles lease infractions on a case-by-case basis ….” Nevertheless, the management representative also admitted to the Press Herald that “the company is looking into reports of previous burglaries at the building and how to increase security at the privately owned 20-unit complex ….”
In 1995, the Maine Supreme Court ruled in a suit backed by NRA that a lease provision banning residents from possessing firearms on Portland Housing Authority property violated the state’s firearm preemption law. Some 13 years later, of course, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment itself prohibited the District of Columbia from banning the possession of operable handguns within private homes.
While the complex in which Mr. Lembo lives insists that it is entitled, as a privately-owned facility, to set its own regulations concerning firearms, the legal landscape may not be so clear cut. The apartment complex prominently advertises on its website that it “welcome[s] section 8 vouchers,” and a management representative told a local reporter that all the company’s properties are “subsidized in some form.” It’s far from clear that a private company that is essentially administering a public benefit program can evade the requirements that pertain to other public entities in the state.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lembo remains unarmed and subject to the same flimsy “security” that has repeatedly failed to keep intruders from his premises. “This is bull,” he aptly noted to a reporter. NRA’s governmental affairs liaison for Maine was just as blunt, stating: “Now we have Mr. Lembo being victimized twice within 48 hours: once by a burglar and second by a landlord.”
Your NRA will be following this case closely and is committed to ensuring that no publicly-funded entity arbitrarily deprives its customers or constituents, especially vulnerable individuals like Harvey Lembo, of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to keep and bear arms for self-protection.

Women Too Weak to Defend Themselves With Guns?–
Anti-gun activist Leah Gunn Barrett, the executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, must have never read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. Breitbart reports that on Al Jazeera TV, Barrett saidthat women shouldn’t be allowed to carry firearms for protection on college campuses, on the grounds that “Women are not physically powerful like men are. A gun could easily be turned on the woman, and it is frequently.”
Point of fact, criminologist Gary Kleck’s analysis of National Crime Victimization Survey data found that “[a]t most, 1% of DGUs [defensive gun uses] resulted in the offender taking a gun away from the victim.” However, Kleck noted, this “did not necessarily involve the offender snatching a gun out of the victim’s hands. Instead, a burglar might, for example, have been leaving a home with one of the household’s guns when a resident attempted to stop him using another household gun.” Kleck also found, “rape victims using armed resistance were less likely to have the rape completed against them than victims using any other mode of resistance.”
Barrett is, of course, more interested in opinion than in science. So we thought we would play along, to see how it turned out. We asked a good friend of ours, competitive shooter Carmen Lout, for her opinion about Barrett’s comment.
On the one hand, Carmen noted that, from the standpoint of physical strength, “women are perfectly able to operate and control firearms for self-defense.” Carmen proved that point herself, during a 3-Gun Championship earlier this year, as shown in this video. On the other hand, she also pointed out that “the ability to use firearms for self-defense also depends on factors that have nothing to do with strength, things that are entirely knowledge-based and which, for that reason, women can perform as well as men.”
Since we knew the answer, we didn’t ask Carmen what she thought of Barrett’s ultimate opinion, namely, that no woman deserves the chance to even try to defend herself, that—as a leader of the anti-gun group now known as the Brady Campaign once said—if attacked “put up no defense – give them (the criminals) what they want.”
Anti-gun activist Leah Gunn Barrett, the executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, must have never read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. Breitbart reports that on Al Jazeera TV, Barrett said that women shouldn’t be allowed to carry firearms for protection on college campuses, on the grounds that “Women are not physically powerful like men are. INCREDIBLE— There’s a secret, only custom motorcycle builders know. We understand this secret better than the media does. The media wants to attack freedom constantly. Some of those attacks come from the insurance industry. Yet, they still want their freedom of speech.
One of our motorcycle exhaust manufactures supported executive orders on bike mufflers in California. He basically caved for a competitive edge that didn’t work, so anything after 2013 in California must be approved.
Fortunately, for most aspects of building custom bikes we are free to do what we want. Imagine, if five years from now everything you installed on anything had to be certified. Makes me want to pack my shit and go live in the desert, or move to Australia. Where are the open frontiers? What happened to freedom?
Hang on for next week. We will celebrate some amazing motorcycles, freedom, and sex. Maybe the Redhead of Redheads has the answers.
Ride free forever,
