SIZZLING STURGIS REPORTS SUNDAY POST for August 9, 2015

Hey,

Life has turned into scrambled eggs. We seem to be flying from one event to another, but in a sense it’s all good.

We’ve got lots of wild Sturgis reports heading your way. Rogue, the new/old BikernetBaggers Editor is on the case hard. Hang on.

Let’s hit the news, I need to make an Indian run, then a granddaughters 16th Birthday Party, then pack for a run to Oregon.

ART HALL IN STURGIS— Bikernet International Editor slips onto an Indian for the ride to Sturgis. This guy never stops.

SPECIAL CHIP PHOTOS– Eagle 75 Aerial photos.
Nearly a thousand motorcycles and their riders created the world’s largest motorcycle sculpture at the Buffalo Chip on the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Rally to honor veterans and call for the protection of water from uranium mining.

The event was presented by the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, the Buffalo Chip, and Spectral Q.

Thank you to all who promoted and participated in this amazing work of art at the Buffalo Chip’s CrossRoads field yesterday!

Please find attached several photos of Eagle 75 to post and send to media. Please include photo credit and caption:

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– An explorer goes into an undiscovered tomb for the first time, and in the center of the tomb there is a lamp. He picks it up, and as he starts to rub the dirt off of it, a genie comes out of the lamp and says, “I want to know the person you hate the most.”

The explorer says, “That is gotta be my ex-wife. Why?”

“I am a cursed genie. I will grant you three wishes, but whatever you wish for, your ex-wife will get double that amount.”

“Okay, I wish for a billion dollars.”

“Granted, but you ex-wife gets two billion dollars.”

“I wish for a mansion in California with a swimming pool, and tennis courts, everything.”

“Granted, and your ex-wife gets two.”

“Now make your final wish.” The explorer walks around for a few minutes, returns to the genie with a stick, and says, “You see this stick? Id like you to beat me half to death.”

A BIKERNET BLAST FROM THE PAST–
Found this shot in a negative format 4 by 5. I have spent the past hour scanning it in and fixing it.

From the early ‘80s I would suppose. Brings back memories for all three of us.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY TARDY STUDENT WITH BAD GRADES WORD OF THE DAY–
Atrabilious a-truh-BIL-yuh s

adjective
1. gloomy; morose; melancholy; morbid.
2. irritable; bad-tempered; splenetic.
Quotes
It was remarked by Aristotle, who was a long way the shrewdest and most scientific observer of antiquity, that all men of genius have been melancholic or atrabilious.
— James Sully, “Genius and Insanity,” The Popular Science Monthly, August 1885
Origin
Atrabilious comes from the Latin atra bilis meaning “black bile.” Black bile is one of the four elemental bodily humors of medieval physiology, regarded as causing melancholy. Atrabilious entered English in the mid-1600s.

AEROSTICH ELECTRIC WARM BID SINCE 1982– On colder rides enjoy quick warmth spreading evenly across your chest. It’s a difference you’ll feel even on shorter rides. Stuffing old newspapers underneath your jacket might cost a bit less, but that is uncomfortable and doesn’t add heat. This patented bib is electric-warm, windproof and packs really small. The smooth outer fabric layer is black GORE-TEX® WINDSTOPPER® and the side toward your body is a comfy black micro-fleece. The radiant electric heating layer is between.

The bib stays in place under your jacket perfectly because the inner fleecy layer is grabby and the outer WINDSTOPPER® layer is slippery. The comfortable low-profile fleece lined collar closes fast with hook and loop located at the upper chest and keeps drafts away.

Self-stores, power cord and all, into a built-in zippered pocket. Patent #D641,543S. 30 watts, 2.5 amps. Two sizes: Regular to 5’9”, and Tall over 5’10”. Includes a fused, lighted power switch coil cord. Made in USA

Electric Bib Story

A few years ago John Chase (designer and co-founder of the pioneering motorcycle luggage company Chase Harper) wanted some electric heating wires for an experimental off-road chest protector. One prototype led to another and pretty soon we were making prototype versions of this Kanestu electric bib. They worked so well…much better than we’d anticipated…and there was nothing else even remotely like them on the market. So we applied for a US Patent (#D641,543S) and somewhat surprisingly received one.

With perfect hindsight it’s easy to see why this non-obvious invention is so wonderful. Generations of riders have put layers of newspaper under their jackets, carefully positioned across their chest to block cold winds. At the same time our circulatory system is incredibly efficient at moving any calorie of added heat to all areas of our body, no matter where those calories are added. Doesn’t matter if they come via heated grips, saddles, vests, liners, bibs or from a just-imbibed piping hot cup of cocoa. Calories are the same wherever they’re added.

Worn beneath an Aerostich textile suit aboard my unfaired bike I’m good to temps in the lowish fifties during all-day-long rides…and down into the forties under a Transit jacket.

Whenever cool weather is anticipated I’ll also carry a wind block jersey and a 100wt micro fleece…and layer-up as needed: electric bib first, then fleece, then the jersey and lastly the Roadcrafter/Darien or Transit. The combination takes me five to ten degrees lower.

Is this electric bib is the most important new Aerostich product we’ve added during the last five or ten years? I don’t know. But if it’s not it’s near the top of the list.

STURGIS TO DENVER– Didn’t leave until noon instead of 9 a.m. schedule. These guys take a long time to do everything. Some 420 miles later arrived Denver 9 p.m. They take long breaks at gas stops. Then put the hammer down running 80/90 between lengthy stops.

Somehow Eddie found a Chinese restaurant in the middle of Nebraska They like Chinese even though not similar to Malay food in my mind..

Weather good all the way, a little warm but ok. The sun is strong at this elevation, the Mile High City.

Dinner at Denny’s next to hotel.

WACO UPDATE– The Waco-based 10th Court of Appeals Friday reversed a gag order issued in the case of one of the 177 bikers arrested after the May 17 shootout between rival motorcycle gangs and police at Twin Peaks restaurant.

State District Judge Matt Johnson issued the gag order on June 30 after ruling that Dallas lawyer F. Clinton Broden, who represents Matthew Alan Clendennen, 30 of Hewitt, could obtain surveillance video of the shootout from the owners of the Waco Twin Peaks franchise, but could not release it to the public.

Broden filed an appeal challenging the gag order the next day with the three-member 10th Court of Appeals, arguing that the district court lacked jurisdiction to issue the order and that the order violates the Texas Constitution and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.’

He also pointed out that the order only applies to law enforcement and lawyers in the Clendennen case and not to any of the other 176 cases that are pending in the shootout between police and rival motorcycle gangs that left nine bikers dead and 20 others injured.

In a memorandum opinion Friday, the appeals court ruled that the district court “abused its discretion” by issuing the gag order.

The court gave Johnson seven days to vacate the order, after which the court would vacate it.

“I will have a lot to say soon, I have been saving it up,” Broden said Friday in an email announcing the decision.

Broden’s appeal was supported by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which on July 24 filed a brief with the court on behalf of a group of major media organizations including The Associated Press in support of the challenge.

The nearly 40-page amicus curiae–or friend of court–brief argued that the gag order “places unconstitutional restrictions on speech and prevents members of the media from gathering the news and reporting on matters of significant public interest.”

“On June 30, 2015, the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion for a gag order approximately 10 minutes before the trial court was to hear a motion to quash (Clendennen’s) subpoena for surveillance video of the shootout,”

“As a result, neither (Clendennen) nor members of the news media had any meaningful opportunity to oppose the gag order prior to its entry,” the brief says.

STURGIS 2015 Legends Ride– As the name indicates it includes many of the legends in the world of motorcycling and it started at the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood. The goal is to give back to the community that has given us all the good hospitality we receive throughout the Black Hills as we attend the Sturgis Rally.

The Legends Ride also gives Participants the chance to ride with a variety of celebrities like Paul Yaffe, Keith Terry, John Shope, Rolland Sands, John Paul Dejoria, and this year about 450 people did that. Because of the large number of riders this year the ride was broken up into two groups. The first group had 200 and a short time later the rest followed. The ride out of Deadwood took a longer different route this year on US-85 to Belle Fourche and then past Bear Butte to the Buffalo Chip. At the “CHIP” they had a catered dinner and then hang out to listen to the concerts.

On the “CHIPS” main stage DeJoria made the statement “Being a biker myself for many, many years, I happen to know that in philanthropy, bikers are some of the most giving, loving human beings on the planet. Whether it is giving of their time to go on a ride, giving their time to go out and help somebody out. It doesn’t have to be monetary. It can be of their time and they do it. And one of the most important, I think, biker events on the planet is what goes on here in South Dakota every single year and we’re just so happy to be part of it.”

During past events a motorcycle built by local high school students has been auctioned off and this year they put a twist on it and built two one a 2014 Harley Road King under the direction of Keith Terry, Nick Cramer, Randy Cramer, and Paul Yaffe and the other a 2014 Indian Chieftan under the direction of Keith Terry Chris Malo and John Shope. The bidding was hat and heavy and when it was over the Indian went for $61.000 and the Harley for $60,000.

A Les Paul guitar signed by many of the celebrities went for $3100 and the David Uhl painting of Betsy Huelskamp raised another $2500.

NIGHT OWLS HOWL DURING WEE HOURS IN STURGIS– It’s midnight at the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, and if a motorcycle suddenly started driving upside-down across the ceiling, few would notice.

Grabbing most of the attention are women in thongs and bras who are dancing on the main bar to the delight of the glassy-eyed men grinning up at them.

It’s the kind of debauchery you’d expect on a Tuesday night during Sturgis rally week at a saloon that claims to be the world’s largest biker bar. To get a sense of what happens in Sturgis long after the sun goes down, the Journal sent a reporter and photographer into the field.

As the night goes on, some of the crowd spills over to the nearby Buffalo Chip Campground. Getting from one side of the 600-acre campground to the other is a chore when people are sober. Doing it with a belly full of beer and whiskey is an all-out physical challenge.

With that in mind, some of the bikers rented golf carts. These low, slow riders, built for humming over pristine fairways, are transformed into all-terrain party wagons, whizzing around the muddy campground as men hitching rides to their campsites hold on for dear life — and to their beers.

Chip regulations state that alcohol cannot be brought onto the premises, but judging by all of the coolers of beer on the campground at night, that rule (as well as one requiring shirts and pants) appears to be optional in the minds of patrons.

But by 3 a.m., the Chip, and much of Sturgis, is mostly quiet. The rumbling of motorcycle engines is still heard, but in many campers on the east side of the Chip, the lights are off.

At the Wolfman Jack stage, where Lynyrd Skynyrd performed earlier in the night, a garbage crew is cleaning up thousands of empty beer cans, getting the area ready for the next big act. A few pockets of bikers, including a group of about 10 all sporting cowboy hats, are still going strong.

Police say most of the trouble caused at the Chip and bars around Sturgis is connected to alcohol. Around 10 years ago, Bob and Sharon Roush, working in conjunction with Sturgis police, opened their home up to bikers who had had too much to drink, giving them a place to sleep off the booze instead of going to jail. It serves as a sort of Christian-based drunk tank.

“If you came up here, you had to stay here,” says a man at the Roush home, who would identify himself only as “Pyro.”

The Roushes, who live near downtown, are affiliated with the His Laboring Few Biker Ministry of Jesus Christ, and they regard the help they give bikers as a way of serving God.

Shortly after sunrise on Wednesday, the Chip starts to return to life. Some bikers, muddy and hung over from the night before, go to the public showers to freshen up, while others grab a coffee.

Within a few hours, the party is going strong again. Around 200 bikers, both men and women, have gathered in front of the Jägermeister Stage at the CrossRoads, and none are wearing pants.

They’re here to try to set a world record for the most people gathered in one spot wearing only their underwear. They’re cheering. They’re drinking beer. They’re almost completely naked.

It is only 9 a.m. Another long night is ahead.

INCREDIBLE—
We have a ton of content headed your way. Several Sturgis reports, Jeff Cochran’s feature, Custom Cycle Engineering tech, Crocker manufacturing is alive, or not, you name it.

The Redhead of Redheads returns to Bikernet Next Week. Let’s see how she shakes up the works.

Rogue may shake up the Bikernet Baggers web effort, in fact it’s already beginning to buzz with more content.

I will be working with Steve M. at Paughco directly on the Kranzler Bagger Project. He was a good brother and we will make his bike live again, with the help of Paughco. I need to hit a swap meet for some help with stock brackets.

This will be a fantastic month, so hang on.
