Hey,
As you know, and are constantly faced with it daily, life is completely bananas. It really is what we make of it everyday. So, yesterday my daughter in law pinged me, “The Born Free Garage Company Party is tomorrow, be there. Your granddaughter will be there!”
Okay, the pressure was on. Charge up my battery. Get my ass up, work out, call the bros and ride out.
Beautiful morning and I read my new issue of The WEEK magazine with my first cup of Joe. By the time I finished with half the magazine I slipped into a deep sense of depression. I didn’t want to see anyone. All governments are fighting and all the bureaucrats are lying to all the constituents. Nothing makes any sense, and we’ve complicated everything so much, it’s uncontrollable.
I said fuck it. I won’t go to another crowded gathering. Jeremiah and the bros took off. Tobey was running late, so I rode to the marina and we went to a new restaurant on the water.
Fuck it! Let’s hit the news, then I’ll finish the story.

It’s the Largest Evel Knievel Collection in the World! –Unveiled during Moto GP at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, April 10-12
It’s the largest Evel Knievel collection ever assembled, a collection of such massive proportions it’s more complete than the daredevil himself ever amassed in one place!
Get a first-hand look at the most comprehensive and authentic collection of Evel Knievel memorabilia in the world, on display for the first time in its entirety at Moto GP in Austin, TX, April 10-12. It includes five of Knievel’s original jump bikes, never-before-seen images, X-rays of Evel’s broken bones, plus his own performance leathers and most iconic personal helmets.
Said Lathan McKay, owner of the collection, “After years of Evel’s possessions being lost in obscurity and so many things sold, stolen or missing, Evel’s effects are finally coming back together.” McKay terms his hunt and discovery process “Evel Archaeology.”
McKay spent the last two years sourcing items and restoring them. The collection’s debut at COTA follows closely on the release of two films about Knievel: Johnny Knoxville’s “Being Evel” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and a Spike TV documentary titled “I Am Evel Knievel” aired last fall. McKay consulted and co-produced on both projects and their robust reception is proof that the American pop culture psyche retains a fascination with the world’s ultimate risk-taker. Evel Knievel is indeed an emblem of Americana still recognized worldwide.
After the debut at COTA, the collection will travel in Knievel’s Mack truck rig “Big Red,” now completely restored to its former glory. Plans are also underway to establish a permanent home for the items.
Knievel made headlines from the mid ‘60s to the early ’80s for his daring motorcycle jumping and risk-taking attitude. A man of unabashed confidence and brashness, he derived as much fame from the jumps he failed to make—and the injuries he suffered—as the many he completed.
Don’t miss this chance to see the only collection of its kind, bringing together in one place a trove of authentic artifacts that belonged to the most notorious daredevil of the 20th Century. It’s an Evel Knievel experience like never before!

ATF director steps down after bullet ban controversy–The director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is stepping down following controversy surrounding the agency’s proposal to ban certain types of ammunition.
The ATF announced Friday that Director B. Todd Jones is resigning at the end of the month “to pursue other opportunities in the private sector.”
“ATF employees are hard-working, dedicated individuals who serve the public to make our nation safer every day,” Jones said in a statement. “I have seen firsthand their extraordinary commitment to combating violent crime, ridding the streets of criminals, and leveraging all available resources to keep our communities safe.”
“I will truly miss leading and working side-by-side with these men and women in their pursuit of ATF’s unique law enforcement and regulatory mission,” he added.
Jones, who in July 2013 became the first ATF director to be confirmed by the Senate and led the agency after a scandal involving the agency’s infamously botched Operation Fast and Furious gun tracking initiative, is departing shortly after the agency dropped a controversial attempt to ban certain armor-piercing bullets used in AR-15 rifles.
The episode was the latest in a series of flaps that has put the Obama administration’s ATF at odds with many congressional Republicans. In recent weeks, GOP lawmakers have introduced legislation seeking to tamp down on the agency’s authority — and to abolish the ATF altogether.
Jones’ resignation comes amid a firestorm over the ATF’s proposed bullet ban, which was shelved last week after the agency received tens of thousands of public comments opposing the move.
The ATF argued that banning 5.56mm armor-piercing bullets that can be used in handguns would protect police officers, but emphasized that it was not attempting to ban all types of bullets.
However, congressional Republicans and gun groups beat back the ATF’s proposed bullet ban, calling it an infringement on their Second Amendment rights.
“Second Amendment rights require not only access to firearms, but to bullets,” a group of 53 Republican senators wrote earlier this month in a letter to Jones.
“If law-abiding gun owners cannot obtain rifle ammunition, or face substantial difficulty in finding ammunition available and at reasonable prices because government entities are banning such ammunition, then the Second Amendment is at risk,” they continued.
The ATF backed off the proposed bullet ban the next day.
“The vast majority of the comments received to date are critical of the framework, and include issues that deserve further study,” the agency said. “Accordingly, ATF will not at this time seek to issue a final framework.”
In a statement anouncing Jones’ departure, Attorney General Eric Holder lauded him for his service and “groundbreaking” law enforcement initiatives, including an effort to strengthen ballistic imaging technology that recently played a critical role in the investigation of the shooting of two police officers.
“As the first ever Senate-confirmed Director of ATF, his indelible legacy will serve as an inspiring example for all those who follow him,” Holder said in a statement.
ATF deputy director Thomas Brandon will take over as acting director until the agency finds a replacement for Jones.?

UNCLE MONKEY READER COMMENT–
Good news this week though. It strikes me that Americans are overwhelming scared that someone is out to get them. Scared their neighbor is going to take their stuff, scared aliens are going to abduct them, scared someone is going to take their job, scared someone else is going to take their freedom away.
So they strike first, throw the first punch because they are so scared that someone will wrong them. When there is no threat they trip over themselves to create a threat – this food is going to kill you, radiation from your cell phone is going to kill you, toxins released from your hardwood floors are going to kill you.
It absolutely drives them nuts that as motorcyclists we have weighed the risk and still choose to ride – how can we ride when there is bacteria on a shopping cart waiting to kill us.

Great article and great product. Man those fenders are sweet. I have an 1988 springer front end on my 1987 Softail. I did the swap in 1989.
Love the front end. Hate the fender. I cut about 6 inches off and made it look a lot better but, I could never figure out how to lower it without adding
that goofy looking kit. You nailed it !
Are you making these ? Or would you be willing to fab one for an 1988 ? If so what would you charge . I would do all the finish work and Paint. I noticed the caliber bracket on your bikes are different than mine. Mine is the stock configuration with
single bolt at the top. Any help would be appreciated .
Thanks for you

Thanks for the fine complements on my work Joe, what your looking at is custom fabrication and I have never made two the same so when I get a call for one it’s just billed out on time and material spent ( average is 8 – 12 hours without deviltails ).
Unfortunately unless your planning a trip to
Texas sometime in the future I’d need to get my hands on another bike like yours ( or the same front end, wheel and tire anyway ) to make one for you, if you’d like I will be glad to hang on to your contact info just incase I get something in that will work for fit up?

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB FILES–Canberra’s police chief warns new club ‘more violent’ l
New players on Canberra’s (the Australian capital) motorcycle club scene tended to be more violent, impulsive and unpredictable, the capital’s police chief says.
Chief Police Officer Rudi Lammers warned the ACT’s newly established Comancheros chapter would operate differently to the more settled local arm of the Rebels after Canberra faced a spate of ‘brazen’ gun attacks with alleged links to motorcycle groups.
A man, 36, was shot and wounded after he answered the door of his Stirling home last Thursday night in one of three alleged biker-related shootings that took place within hours.
Police refused to be drawn on whether the night’s rampage was between rival clubs or was the activity of members of one group.
But Fairfax Media is reporting claims the shootings were not the result of a turf war, but there are possible links to the territory’s fledgling Comancheros chapter.
The most recent incidents were on the back of five shootings within 10 days in February.
Police said they investigated links to motorcycle clubs in relation to at least one of those attacks, and believed some of the shootings could have been linked to drugs.
Assistant Commissioner Lammers said the Rebels motorcycle club had a significant presence in Canberra for many years and often managed to escape police attention.
“But every now and again they will do things that clearly brings their activities to our attention and we will target those activities.”
The Comancheros had “a different way of operating”, he said.
“They have a propensity to be more violent and more unconventionally impulsive and unpredictable, and that’s what we’re focusing on.”
It is understood the new Comancheros chapter was established by former Rebels who left the club before patching over.
Police say the act is seen as treacherous and punishable by retribution by former associates seeking payback.
Assistant Commissioner Lammers said police would also focus heavily on behaviour associated with bikers known to have switchws clubs.
“There have been instances that we’ve known of where one motorcycle group has patched over to another motorcycle group and then has accepted a different culture that is associated with that different motorcycle group, and that does cause us some concern.”
Despite the recent spate of gun crime, Assistant Commissioner Lammers believed police had an adequate level of scrutiny over outlaw motorcycle groups through Taskforce Nemesis.
The strike force was set up last year to target outlaw motorcycle groups in the ACT as part of national disruption efforts.
“I absolutely won’t tolerate visible outlaw motorcycle gangs in and around the community where there are children and people just trying to have a good time and they tend by their presence to intimidate and disrupt people’s right to enjoyment.
“And we will use every law available to us to do that.”
Police have welcomed anti-consorting laws proposed for the ACT that would give officers greater powers to clamp down on escalating club activity, but the legislation was criticised by civil libertarians and law groups.
Assistant Commissioner Lammers said each of the recent shootings was a targeted attack and residents shouldn’t be worried about escalating violence.
“These were not just a bunch of people driving by homes, picking a target at random and firing shots into a home or into a car.
“There are always concerns, particularly when Canberra homes are so densely located at times, that there will be bystanders involved.
“But thankfully, up until now, that hasn’t happened.”

WARNING FROM THE NATIONAL MOTORISTS ASSOCIATION–The NMA’s ever vigilant Michigan contingent sent us this article about a startup company that has made it even easier for the traffic justice system to snatch up your hard-earned money. The company, Court Innovations, has developed a web-based app that lets traffic ticket recipients negotiate court settlements remotely, instead of showing up in court to fight tickets.
Here’s how the system works:
You get a traffic ticket
If you’re willing to plead guilty but want to bargain for a lesser charge, you write up an explanation of what happened and submit it through the court’s website.
An adjudicator (likely a city employee) reviews your case and decides your fate; you receive the decision via email or text message.
You can accept the deal and pay online or reject the deal and request a court hearing.
Three jurisdictions in Michigan are currently working the Court Innovations, and company officials say their system will help over-burdened courts process more cases and collect more fines. It also sounds like a way to give motorists the illusion of fighting their tickets when it’s really part of the scheme to separate motorists from their money as efficiently as possible.
Here’s how the scheme works in Michigan and other parts of the country: Speed limits are frequently set lower than engineering requirements dictate (or in Michigan’s case, lower than permitted by law), creating speed traps. Local governments exploit the speed traps by enforcing illegal ticket quotas. Officers then write tickets for a lower speed than what was measured to induce guilty pleas and prompt payments. Drivers who dare to request hearings are often penalized when their tickets are amended back to the higher recorded speed levels.
A variation on the scheme involves changing moving violations to non-moving violations to discourage drivers from challenging a dubious charge in court. The city gets an equal or greater fine (and does not have to share revenue with the state), and the driver’s record remains clean. The Court Innovations approach will only increase these money-making plea deals and allow cities to further leverage their revenue-generating speed traps. (Did we mention the company’s business model relies on getting a cut of the fines collected?)
Court Innovations is a spin-off of the University of Michigan Law School and is the brain child of University of Michigan Law School Professor J.J. Prescott. We have a hard time believing that the U of M Law School doesn’t understand how the traffic justice system works, so we question why such a respected institution would aid and abed a corrupt system. In fact, Executive Director of the NMA Foundation Jim Walker, who lives in Michigan, wrote a letter to the dean of the U of M Law School asking that very question. Here’s an excerpt:
I am writing about a Detroit Free Press article which associates a computer based program marketed by “Court Innovations” with the U of M Law School. I believe this association brings disrepute to one of America’s finest law schools, and should be condemned by it. I think the law school needs to immediately disassociate itself from this program and the for-profit company running it.
The original idea to reduce court workloads and reduce their costs is admirable.
The ways and purposes for which this system will usually be used will not be in the cause of justice or the fair application of the law to citizens. Most if not all of its users will have the goal and result of facilitating and streamlining the collection of revenue with predatory traffic laws and enforcement regimens aimed not at traffic safety but at revenue collection. Traffic laws and enforcement procedures such as speed traps that are aimed primarily at revenue instead of safety are wrong one hundred percent of the time. I believe it is improper for the Law School to be associated in any way.
The true goal for the users of the “Court Innovations” program will be to further erode our cherished legal principle of the citizen facing their accuser in open court. The true purpose will be to facilitate quick payment of fines and costs, by giving the citizens small breaks to discourage them from mounting challenges to predatory laws and enforcement procedures where they might win. And to prevent the courts from hearing serious challenges to the very validity of those laws and systems.
As another Michigan member points out, if the courts are overworked, it’s because local governments are issuing too many citations in a rush to take money from responsible motorists. He summed up the issue this way:
The first job of the court is justice, not efficiency. “Court efficiency” is another phrase for “losing our rights.” If this software gets into wide use, it will let Michigan cities (and others) take money from citizens with the same greed as in Ferguson, Missouri, but without the inefficient, in-person, court system that led to rioting and shootings. Do we want our courts to be that efficient at denying our rights?
THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–Sex on the Beach
A man washed up on a beach after a shipwreck. Only a sheep and a sheepdog were washed-up with him. After looking around, he realized that they were stranded on a deserted island.
After being there awhile, he got into the habit of taking his two animal companions to the beach every evening to watch the sunset. One particular evening, the sky was a fiery red with beautiful cirrus clouds, the breeze was warm and gentle – a perfect night for romance.
As they sat there, the sheep started looking better and better to the lonely man. Soon, he leaned over to the sheep and put his arm around it. The sheepdog, ever-protective of the sheep, growled fiercely until the man took his arm from around the sheep.
After that, the three of them continued to enjoy the sunsets together, but there was no more cuddling.
A few weeks passed-by and, lo and behold, there was another shipwreck. The only survivor was Nancy Pelosi. That evening, the man brought Nancy to the evening beach ritual. It was another beautiful evening – red sky, cirrus clouds, a warm and gentle breeze – perfect for a night of romance. Pretty soon, the man started to get those feelings again. He fought the urges as long as he could but he finally gave-in and leaned over to Nancy and told her he hadn’t had sex for months.
Nancy batted her eyelashes and asked if there was anything she could do for him.
He said, ‘Take the dog for a walk.’

A NEW WEEK, A NEW BEGINNING, AND NEW LIFE—So get this, Tobey, our certified welder and champion road racer and I rode to this little restaurant on the harbor. Restaurants in this area have a tough go of it. We are right in the middle of a 15-million population base, but hidden in a very industrial section of the city, the port. Nothing but trucks, containers, cranes and ships, just iron and concrete. I love it, but nobody else does.
I just wanted to relax, but our waitress, restaurant owner, wanted to blither on and on about her efforts, her family restaurant history, her expansion plans, and her fights with all the bureaucracies controlling the restaurant and port businesses. She was forced to build a fence by one agency and told to take it down by another.
Goddammit, I just wanted to eat my scrambled eggs and peel. Hell, I didn’t want to eat at all. “Fuck it,” I said to Tobey. “Let’s ride to the party, and we were glad we did. It was jammed with cool bikes and old friends. For a couple of hours I didn’t think about the world and all the fucked-up governments. Then we rode back to our harbor hideout, slithering through bumper to bumper traffic, and then the dank marina for dinner on the water.
So, there you have it. Ride like the free wind. Let the world go and enjoy any freedoms we can still get away with. We will be outlaws forever!
Ride Free Forever, or die trying!
