Hey,
I still don’t understand why they kill Daylight Savings Time every year? I heard it had something to do with school kids walking to school in the dark. First, they don’t walk anymore, and second change the school hours, done deal.
Let’s rock into the news today. It’s a good one and I’m on a mission. Not sure what it is just yet, or if I should just keep to myself, work around the shop and watch Sunday Night Football. We’ll see.
Let’s hit it.
WHEELS THROUGH TIME READY--Just days before 12th Annual Vintage Motorcycle Raffle Giveaway, Wheels Through Time ready to unveil next year’s Grand Prize!
After almost a year of anticipation, the 12th Annual Wheels Through Time Vintage Motorcycle Raffle is drawing near. Its the museum’s biggest event of the season, and thousands from near and far make the trip through the winding roads of the Smokies to witness, and hopefully win, a piece of vintage motorcycle history.
This year, the museum upped the ante with not one, but two Grand Prize machines — 1935 & 1936 Harley-Davidson VL Flathead Bobbers built in the hand-built in the museum’s restoration shop. Two tickets will be drawn to decide who will be the lucky new owners of this year’s timeless classics.
The Model VL is one of the rarer models offered by Harley-Davidson over their 100+ years atop the motorcycle industry. Motorcycle manufacturers suffered immensely throughout the Great Depression, as few customers had the financial means to purchase a new motorcycle or automobile.
First offered for the 1930 model year, the VL was a vast improvement over the companies antiquated model JD, but nationwide economic hardship kept production low. In total, the model VL was produced for only 7 years with limited production, which makes for difficulties when searching for a genuine, running example in today’s vintage motorcycle market. The machines offered in this year’s raffle giveaway represent the last two years of Model VL production, and have been rebuilt as modified “hot-rods” from the era they were produced.
The 2014 Vintage Motorcycle Raffle will be held on Saturday, November 15th at Wheels Through Time Museum, at the conclusion of the annual Haywood County Toy Run. The run departs from Adams St. in Canton, NC at 12:00 and rides to a catered barbeque lunch at Wheels Through Time. The drawing for the raffle will be held at approximately 3:00 p.m., at the conclusion of the day’s festivities.
While the museum prepares to make the day of two lucky winners on November 15th, the staff is already geared up to unveil the Grand Prize for 2015! For next year’s annual motorcycle raffle, WTT is raising the bar once again, offering a custom 1939 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead Bobber specially built by renowned builder Wendell Turner of Turner’s Cycle Shop in South Lyon, Michigan. Wendell has been building old school custom motorcycles since the early 1970s. From choppers and bobbers to antique restorations, Wendell has turned out some amazing machines, and has the awards to prove it.
The 1939 Knucklehead being offered as WTT’s 2015 Raffle Grand Prize has taken home Editor’s Choice, Best Antique, and Best in Show Awards at numerous motorcycle events around the country. Now on display at Wheels Through Time Museum, the bike will help generate much needed funds for the museum to continue to fulfill its mission to preserve motorcycle history for future generations to enjoy.
Raffle Tickets can be purchased at www.WheelsThroughTime.com/2014raffle. Tickets are $10 each, 3 for $20, or 7 tickets for $50 with free T-shirt and DVD.
For more information about Wheels Through Time’s 2014 and 2015 Annual Raffle, visit www.WheelsThroughTime.com. To learn more about participating in the Haywood County Toy Run, visit www.BlueRidgeThunder.org.
I always enter this raffle. It’s amazing to support, and I would be very proud to own a bike restored or built by this team.–Bandit

NRA ENCOURAGES YOU TO VOTE!–
The future of our Second Amendment rights comes down to one day— Election Day—Tuesday, November 4.
Tuesday’s elections are the most important of our lifetime. Our fundamental right to keep and bear arms has never been in greater jeopardy. This election cycle, we face the best organized and most well-funded attack on our freedom since our forefathers put pen to paper to ensure our Second Amendment rights.
As a Second Amendment supporter, you belong to one of the most effective civil rights advocacy organizations in the country. But make no mistake; our opposition is not to be underestimated. Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared war on the NRA and the Second Amendment. We must not sit back and let him use his billions of dollars to impose his radical and elitist anti-gun agenda on the American people.
Your vote on Tuesday could ensure the strength of the Second Amendment for generations to come. Stay home, and we will only be able to watch as anti-gun politicians advance and enact legislation to erode our rights and disarm the American people. We must be sure our collective voices are heard loudly and clearly on Tuesday— the future of our freedom depends on it!
To ensure you know which candidates support or oppose our Second Amendment rights prior to voting on Tuesday, please visit www.NRAPVF.org.
Without the hard work of millions of NRA members, our right to keep and bear arms would have already been rendered all but meaningless, just as it has for the people of Australia and England, places that President Obama cites as model gun control jurisdictions.
We salute our members and their determination to win each and every battle, and the culmination of that battle is Election Day on Tuesday. You, the voters, ultimately determine America’s fate this year and for years to come. Freedom can be lost or gained incrementally. Your votes on Tuesday will ultimately determine which way the fate of our freedoms will sway. Now is your time to stand and fight!
Yours in freedom,

Hey I see you put a suicide shifter on a vrod…
last year my cousin was in Afghanistan and was wounded in action and lost his left hand… I worry that he won’t get back on the saddle.
I am wondering if it was a kit that you bought to make that shifter. Can you tell me a little more about this shifter..?
I would like to do something similar for him so that he doesn’t lose interest in riding…
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide and pointing me in the right direction…

We will do everything we can to hook you up. Take a look at that article. I think it explains where the shifter came from. I just read where Sweden developed prosthesis connected to nerves, which will send touch signals to the brain. Amazing.–Bandit

POOR TASTE ANTI-FREEDOM EFFORT—
One of the ads depicts a man enjoying a meal in a diner, when he comes across a newspaper article about a shooting. The camera then pans to the man’s blood-soaked hands, while a narrator states, “You did not buy the guns. You did not load the bullets. You did not empty the chamber. But you voted; voted for politicians that refused to support common sense gun laws. Vote only for candidates who fight to reduce gun violence.” The ad implies that anyone who does not vote for CSGV-approved gun control candidates has blood on their hands.
Another ad shows a group of young people, who are alerted to a shooting via their smart phones. The young adults become hysterical when their hands and phones become covered in blood as the narrator utters the same statement. Even the ballots cast by voters in the ad are depicted as soiled by the blood of innocents.
While the graphic nature of the ads is likely to grab the most attention, it’s their message that truly conveys the mindset of the radical gun control fringe. Most reasonable Americans understand that violent criminals make their own choices, and they alone are ultimately responsible for their actions. Conversely, the empty “solutions” promoted by gun control advocates necessitate that they collectivize blame across society for the exercise of free will by individual persons. Anti-gun activists, for example, routinely blame all NRA members, or even all gun owners, for the deplorable (and already illegal) actions of a single person misusing a firearm. Sometimes this collective blame is even directed at the firearms themselves, as if they exert some unwholesome influence wholly apart from human agency.
CSGV’s latest ads, however, take the collectivist theory to a new level of hysteria, by contending that anyone who doesn’t vote a straight gun control ticket is tantamount to a mass murderer. In doing so, CSGV would relieve the actual perpetrators of these crimes of their personal responsibility, and shift it to the majority of the electorate, and more specifically, to gun owning voters.
We can at least agree with CSGV on one thing, however: Your decision on how to vote (and whether or not to vote at all) will contribute to moving the momentum on gun control in one direction or another. CSGV hopes to shame pro-gun votes away from the polls, but their tactics ignore the fact that Americans still believe in free will, individual responsibility, and most of all, the value of freedom.
The most effective way to combat CSGV’s deviant mindset is to ensure that you and your like-minded friends and family vote for NRA-PVF-endorsed candidates on November 4. By visiting www.NRAPVF.org, you can access candidate grades and endorsements, and find out where to cast your ballot. With your support, and the help of pro-freedom candidates, America will continue to ensure that the angry, condemning, judgmental philosophy of groups like CSGV stays where it belongs: on the lunatic fringe.

Battery Basics Or why do lithium-ion batteries cost so much?
By Kevin Cameron
The term “lithium-ion battery” includes a wide variety of possible electrode chemistries and electrolytes, and as these types of batteries proliferate, we decided it was time to provide a basic primer on them.
One of the most important facts is that lithium reacts vigorously with water or water vapor. Therefore, lithium-ion batteries must be sealed to exclude the atmosphere, and the electrolyte used cannot contain water.
While most Li-ion batteries employ graphite anodes, cathode types and applications are numerous, as follows:
Lithium cobalt oxide: achieves high energy density but current is somewhat limited by electrode resistance and the heat generation that it produces.
Lithium manganese oxide: good for electric tools requiring high current. Less energy density than cobalt oxide.
Lithium iron phosphate: lower energy density but long life, inherent thermal safety.
Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide: good for low-drain medical equipment.
Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide: able to tolerate many charge-discharge cycles; might be useful for electrical grid storage (storing solar power by day for discharge at night).
In all cases, the charging process stores lithium ions in the negative electrode, or anode. Discharge moves lithium ions from anode to cathode.
Think of electrode structure as analogous to the familiar problem of airliner seating: To shorten loading/unloading time at airports, more aisles are essential, but providing such aisles means the space they occupy cannot be filled by more paying passengers.
Cathodes are made with structures that provide large surface area (Li-cobalt oxide is a layered structure, but lithium manganese oxide is a triangulated “spinel”). So, in general, having maximum energy storage capacity makes it more difficult to achieve rapid charge/discharge. Electrode resistance—chiefly the anode—generates heat.
It was natural for users seeking maximum performance (laptop and mobile-phone makers, Boeing, and others for aircraft use) to be attracted to lithium cobalt oxide, but a number of well-publicized laptop, handheld device, and other fires resulted, including one in a Cessna CJ4 business jet, which caused the FAA to stipulate that this model’s Li-ion main battery be replaced by either lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride batteries. Boeing was allowed to put Li-cobalt oxide aboard its new 787 Dreamliner because four levels of security were provided. As we now know, even that did not prevent “overheating.”

Industry’s response has taken several forms: to shift to inherently safer electrode chemistries such as Li-iron phosphate; to protect high-performance batteries with charge/discharge controls and temperature sensing circuitry; to add fire-retardant substances to battery electrolyte.
In the case of the Shorai motorcycle battery, it employs the safe lithium iron phosphate cathode chemistry. Even though this cathode choice reduces energy storage in comparison with a Li-cobalt oxide chemistry, it still displays much more energy storage than traditional lead-acid.
Every week one can read of “breakthrough” developments in Li-ion battery technology, most of them taking the form of ways to create electrodes with extremely large surface area and an open structure allowing rapid ion movement. No large company can afford to bet the farm on new developments that have not been thoroughly explored, so it can be years before such refinements make their way to market.
Did this make sense? I want to know more.–Bandit

From the Desk of the President
Well folks we are just a few days away from the elections. Take this last chance to spread the word about the candidates listed on the KMA web site. They have supported us in the past and we need to support them now. Make some calls to family and friends to be sure they get to the voting booths on Nov. 4th. Our biggest strength is the ability us bikers have to network. We have a tendency to talk to about everyone and speak our minds when we do. Speak your mind at the voting booth this Tuesday.
We can have some good folks to work with in Frankfort and Washinton D.C. if we vote. The legislative session in Frankfort will be a short one this year, only 30 working days, but we will need to be on our toes and ready to run bills through where we have an opportunity.
After the elections we will be looking for sponsors of various bills and will let you know what happens as news becomes available. You can also go ahead and make plans for our annual legislative conference. It will be held Jan. 17th at Hotel Louisville. Jan. 16th will be a meet and greet for anyone who wishes to come early. Jan. 18th will be our board meeting and new officer training.
Speaking of new officers, it is that time of year to elect KMA officers for 2015. If you are interested in who will lead the various districts or would like to jump into the mix and help out then be sure to make the monthly district meetings over the next couple of months. Many will be having Christmas parties and New Year’s celebrations as well, so check local listings for that info or better yet stop by the meeting.
Last but not least as this year comes to a close I would like to send a big Thank You out to everyone who was an officer, worked the events this year, renewed or became a member, came to an event or just supported the cause in whatever way they could. Without your help and support our efforts would not be possible. THANK YOU.

TECH COMING FROM THE DEVIL ON MONDAY—We are working on a wild tech from Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston. Kent is the man behind building our Belly Tank 5-Ball racing trike. This tech involves Rolling Thunder frames in Canada. “Here is the info on the frame guys up in Canada,” said Kent (the Devil), “The first time I met Sam in person was at the show up in Ohio. They had a fairly new single-side rigid frame on display ( the Python ) and we had Joe T’s trumpet on display at the Hot Bike booth. . .might have been the first time we met in person also?”

Mike Pearce Racing wins the 2014 AMRA Pro Gas Championship–In his first full year of racing in a pro class Mike Pearce Racing has won the 2014 AMRA Pro Gas Championship.
Pearce is not a total rookie to drag racing, he started racing with AMRA in 2007 at Silver Dollar Dragstrip with a Victory 2003 touring cruiser running 12.80-13.30. According to Pearce, “I decided to run in Bagger class, and won the race because the other bike wouldn’t start. I got hooked then, and decided to build a drag bike.” An auspicious beginning but isn’t that how it often is?
“After getting the bike ready for the 2008 season, there was a small setback. I was starting the bike, and was not aware the fuel line pushed off the connector, and the bike burst into flames, with me on it. After getting the fire extinguished, I realized several things: all the work on the bike had just gone up in smoke; I had 1st and 2nd degree burns on my arms, neck, face. and I really need to go to the hospital and after 2 days, I went .”
“One month after the fire, I got on my Touring Cruiser, and spent the next 30 days on the road, thinking about how it all happened. I came home, took the old pile of ashes, salvaged the frame, and made the last AMRA races of the year. I rode that bike until 2010 when I get a PMFR rolling chassis, but with a Victory engine. I ran that bike in v mod until 2014.”
Last winter, Pearce was ready to step it up a couple notches by purchasing the record setting and Championship Pro Gas/Pro Stock program from Tom Caldwell and probably his best decision was to keep Caldwell on as the crew chief and guide in his transition to a low 8 second running bike.
Pearce Racing with crew chief, Tom Caldwell are busy prepping for 2015 now with new induction ideas.
We wish to thank Caldwell’s Performance Center, SA Racing, Mary Lou Brewton, The Rigging Institute, S & S Cycle, Energy One Clutches, Red Line Oil, Vanson Leathers, JIMS USA, VP Fuels for their support and we are looking forward to a successful 2015.

SUNDAY BAD JOKE LIBRARY STILL OPEN–I am getting on in years and not the best looking guy anymore. Some would even say I’m a little frayed around the edges…. But, I have a nice car, a little money, and I spend most of my time casually traveling from place to place and enjoying life.
I met a nice looking girl in a park the other evening. There was an instant spark between us. All of a sudden, she did this cute little dance, then immediately dropped to her knees and lay on the grass at my feet.
As we lay there making love, I thought ….. “Wow, these Taser guns are really worth the money!!”

HELL, SURPRISE, SURPRISE—I won an award and didn’t know it. We have been working with the staff of Cycle Source, the industry, and the MRF to create and activated an Industry Council to support custom motorcycles and freedom. It’s been a 5-year struggle, and I’m not sure where we are? But dammit we keep plugging away.
So, what’s coming at Bikernet next week. I’m wrapping up a tech on a wild chopper Kent Weeks built for an active custom who owns Pivo’s Ice House in Houston. Great groups of folk, having fun and building wild shit.
So how I’m going to chase Pat Patterson down from Lead Sled and wrap up his feature for the HORSE. I believe I survived several deadlines last week, but more are always on the horizon. I need to reach out to Carl Morrow about a tech on his carb.
Our JIMS engine is on it’s way to Houston for our Belly Tank 5-Ball Racing trike for Bonneville. I need to study the FIM class rules. They are the only sanctioning body with a trike class. I can’t find their rules—help!
I’m looking forward to a story on Steve Huntsinger, the master of the most magnificent motorcycle restorations. I’m sure I will learn during the interview.
A new batch of Bikernet and Cantina content will fly at us just as soon as I open my e-mails on Monday morning. Hang on!
