THE CODE OF THE WEST SUNDAY POST for Sunday, March 30, 2014

Hey,

The code of the west this year is headed by making every minute count. It’s a year of non-stop efforts and projects. At some point we are all faced with drawing a line in the sand. Enough is enough. This is a magnificent year of opportunities, but we need to roll the dice and gamble on the good ones. And you must give every opportunity your finest efforts or don’t go there. At the end of the first chapter each opportunity must return the favor and give you its best efforts.

Every opportunity has partners, some are paid, some are resources and some are the leaders. For instance our efforts with Unbrako Fasteners. We can give it hell, but if they don’t have product in stock or knock-out pricing, and quality products, there’s not much we can do. We are hoping for all the products to be the works and in the supply chain by the end of the year. If you spend serious funds on fasteners send us a wish list, and we will quote it. We are hoping to be able to save our brothers and sisters in the industry lots of money by the end of the year.

Let’s hit the news. Then I’ll finish my blither on this year and projects.

QUICK OPEN THE BAD JOKE LIBRARY–Brenda O’Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door.

“Brenda, may I come in?” he asks. “I’ve somethin’ to tell ya”.

“Of course you can come in, you’re always welcome, Tim. But where’s my husband?”

“That’s what I’m here to be telling ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinnessbrewery…”

“Oh, God no!” cries Brenda. “Please don’t tell me.”

“I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I’m sorry.”

“How did it happen, Tim?”

“It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned.”

“Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me the truth, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?”

“Well, Brenda… No. In fact, he got out three times to pee.”

Victory Indian are bullying long time Indian dealers threatening them with law suits unless they pay to use the Indian name. These are small parts suppliers who have been around since the wigwam closed–not a class act. What next? Sue me for having the Indian name on my Scout’s tank?

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT TARDY STUDENT WEEKEND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT–panacea  pan-uh-SEE-uh , noun;

1. a remedy for all disease or ills; cure-all.

2. an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties: His economic philosophy is a good one, but he tries to use it as a panacea.

But for the sake of this wonderful panacea —English humour— the English sacrifice so much. –– Wyndham Lewis, Tarr , 1918

Even so; some gloomy souls affirming that it is proving with that great invention as with brandy or eau-de-vie, which, upon its first discovery, was believed by the doctors to be, as its French name implies, a panacea —a notion which experience, it may be thought, has not fully verified. — Herman Melville, The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade , 1857

Panacea derives from Greek panakeia , from panakes , “all-healing,” from pan- , “all” + akos , “cure.”

MOTORCYCLE CLUBS HAVE NO PLACE IN SOCIETY SAY AUSTRALIAN COPS–  While sex, money and power may lure young members to motorcycle club chapters around New South Wales, Australia’s most populated state, police warn that club life will not end well for them.

“We would say that the only thing that joining any group will give you is usually a jail sentence, if not death,” NSW gangs squad commander Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace said.

Strike Force Raptor, a police team set up to tackle motorcycle clubs following a fatal brawl at Sydney Airport in 2009, has seen the arrest of almost 2500 people since its formation and the seizure of $15 million worth of drugs. The figures for actual conviction rates and nature of the arrests has not been made public.

“Our biggest challenge is to discourage young vulnerable people from joining gangs in the first place,” Supt Wallace told reporters on Friday.

“There seems to be a romantic notion that joining a club – whether it is a motorcycle club or any other group that has a banner – that by joining the group will give you power, money and in some cases even girls.

“That’s a fallacy and it’s misguided.”

Police believe there are at least 20 different one percenter motorcycle clubs in NSW.

Strike Force Raptor has seized 636 firearms and close to $4 million in cash and assets from gang members and associates over the past five years.

Dozens of club houses have been raided and chapters dismantled and Det Supt Wallace expects more of the same.

The strike force have used any law available to force bikers to ‘toe the line’, Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas said.
“They have not only arrested and charged bikers for major offences like attempted murder, extortion and sexual assault, they have booked thousands for riding bikes without helmets, speeding, even participating in sporting events without the appropriate accreditation.”

“A lot of these clubs claim to be one percenters… they believe this gives them the right to live outside the law and abuse the standards that all of us have to live by,” Det Supt Wallace said

“(Our) role is to bring the respect back to those groups so they once again abide by the law as we all have to.”
“If we receive information that bikers are intimidating other members of the community you can rest assured they will be promptly visited by officers from Raptor and their anti-social ways will be toned down quick smart.”

You’ll love this. In some societies where the military is trying to take over, their slant is that politicians aren’t needed in society. Check the item below.–Bandit

FBI ARRESTED ANTI-GUN CALIFORNIA SENATOR FOR GUN TRAFFICKING– — Being good Americans, we take the position that anyone who is arrested and charged with multiple crimes is innocent until proven guilty. That’s more than California state senator Leland Yee (D) has done for gun owners in the past. In August 2012, Yee said “no one will convince me it’s anything other than a joke to say that having multiple clips and semi-automatic weapons that can shoot 100 or more bullets at a time is necessary in this state or in this country, it’s ridiculous.”

Now, Yee has other things with which to concern himself, and none is a joking matter.

The San Jose Mercury-News reports that “Yee now is accused of consorting with notorious felons, accepting money for his cash-strapped political campaigns in exchange for favors and promising undercover FBI agents he could deliver connections to international gun runners.” Additionally, he “is depicted in a startling, 137-page FBI affidavit of repeatedly offering to broker illegal firearms sales in exchange for campaign contributions,” and he is “linked to a host of wrongdoing to pad his political war chest, charged with seven felonies in a case with two dozen defendants accused of everything from money laundering to murder-for-hire.”

The Sacramento Bee reports that also arrested along with Yee was one Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow, a former Chinatown organized crime figure who once served time in prison for gun trafficking, and who radical gun control supporter Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) later praised as a model of reform. The paper separately reports that “The FBI affidavit attached to the corruption case of state Sen. Leland Yee details a world of armaments: bulletproof vests, revolvers, assault rifles, shoulder-fired rockets and mines.”

KRON-4, a San Francisco-area station, reports that Yee “asked for campaign donations in exchange for introducing an undercover FBI agent to an arms trafficker.” Court documents posted with the KRON-4 article assert that “According to Senator Yee, the arms dealer had contacts in Russia, Ukraine, Boston and Southern California. . . . Senator Yee said, ‘Do I think we can make some money? I think we can make some money. Do I think we can get the good? I think we can get the goods.’ . . . Senator Yee said ‘Because, I’m getting a little more into this, it’s not just Russia; the Muslim countries have sources too’. . . Senator Yee asked [another person involved] if he wanted ‘automatic weapons’ as opposed to semi-automatic weapons.”

Like Chow, Yee, too, is popular with gun control supporters. In 2006, the Brady Campaign rated Yee an “A+” and named him to the group’s so-called “Gun Violence Prevention Honor Roll.” In bestowing the “honor,” the Brady Campaign noted that Yee had sponsored legislation to require semi-automatic handguns to have micro-stamping features and had supported a variety of other gun control proposals.

Now, gun control advocates join Yee in having other things with which to concern themselves. The Associated Press reports “Gun-control groups (are) trying to find a new legislative leader to champion firearms restrictions after one of their most outspoken supporters was charged in a federal gun-trafficking case.”

Until now, Yee had been campaigning to be elected as California’s Secretary of State. He has since withdrawn from the race. SF Gate reports that Yee’s lawyer sized up his client’s situation by saying “The future will hold a lot of work.”

No doubt it will.

HANG ON FOR NEW GIRL OF BIKERNET IN THE CANTINA—Pablo started sending me these shots of Tempest Storm. The more he sent the more intrigued I became. When I was first in the service in 1966 I went to strip clubs in San Diego.

Traditional strip clubs were already beginning to fade. The hippy era was fast approaching and girls were changing. Until then it was a big deal for a girl to strip. Suddenly woman’s lib hit and girls ripped off their clothes anywhere, at anytime.

Strip clubs were housed in theaters. It was a show, with acts, even comedians. It shifted to the night club scene. Anyway, through Tempest Storm we will learn some of the history of these girls and the action on stage. It’s an example of how everything changes sooner or later.

Hang on.

CDC TASK FORCE REPORT–Before we get to the subject matter at hand, let me address two important preliminary matters. The first is explaining what the Community
Preventative Services Task Force (CPSTF) is. The second is to explain the purpose of this article.

The CPSTF is a task force whose members are appointed by the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the purpose of providing studies which recommend programs and policies to improve health. Their latest report focuses on motorcycle fatalities and injuries.

The study recommends universal motorcycle helmet laws as the sole method to reduce fatalities and injuries. The report fails to address ways to prevent or reduce motorcycle crashes. There is no mention of motorcycle training and education. The recommendation instead focuses on surviving the inevitable crash.

Now for the purpose of this article. First and foremost let me explain what the purpose is not. I am neither attacking nor defending universal motorcycle helmet laws. As of this writing, 19 states have made the decision to keep them in place while 31 states have elected to allow motorcycle riders to make their own decision about wearing helmets. It is a topic which sparks much debate and disagreement within the riding community as a whole.

The purpose of this article is to suggest that we motorcyclists should not simply accept what we are told by official sounding entities. Before we accept restrictions being placed upon us, perhaps we should ask some hard questions rather than accept the opinions of those who want to convince us that motorcycling is inherently dangerous, and that we are all destined for a terrible crash.

Trust me; it is not just governmental entities that want to convince us of this. Each one of us have been at a social gathering where someone, upon finding out that we ride a motorcycle, has felt the need to tell us about their family member or friend who died in a horrific motorcycle accident. I have never had that happen when someone found out that I purchased a car. I guess people don’t die in car crashes.

But I digress. Let’s get back to the CPSTF.

The CPSTF’s latest recommendation comes on the heels of the CDC study that came to the same conclusion, which is that all states should have universal motorcycle helmet laws. The CPSTF points to several factors in making its recommendation. They point to increased motorcycle fatalities.

They claim that states with universal motorcycle helmet laws experience less motorcycle related fatalities while states that allow adults to choose whether or not to wear a helmet experience more motorcycle related fatalities. The CPSTF claims that wearing a motorcycle helmet reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 42%. Finally the CPSTF claims that states which implement universal motorcycle helmet laws experience an economic benefit, while states that repeal universal helmet laws experience increased costs.

Let’s take each of these assertions and ask some questions based upon data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Federal Highway Administration (FDHA). Both websites are below should you wish to look this up for yourself.

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/departments/nrd-30/ncsa/STSI/USA%20WEB%20REPORT
.HTM

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/statistics/abstracts/2011/

First let’s look at rising motorcycle fatalities. One thing that NHTSA looks at with overall motor vehicle fatalities is motor vehicles fatalities per 100,000 registered motor vehicles. That gives the raw number some context. What happens when we do the same with motorcycle related fatalities? The most recent numbers provided by the federal government give us motorcycle related fatalities and motorcycle registrations for the years
2008 to 2011.

In 2008 there were 5,312 motorcycle related fatalities nationwide. In 2011 there were 4,612. In 2008, the number of motorcycle
related fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles was 68.93. By 2011
that number had steadily declined to 56.44. It would appear that motorcyclists are moving the numbers in the right direction.
?Being that there was no change in the number of states that had universal motorcycle helmet laws during that time period, it is hard to conclude that universal helmet laws are responsible for the decrease in motorcycle related fatalities. Could it be that increased focus on training and education is having a positive effect? It is impossible to tell with any certainty.

However, learning how to avoid a crash is a more appealing strategy in my book that merely trying to survive one.

Next let’s look at the claim that that states with universal motorcycle helmet laws experience less motorcycle related fatalities than states which allow adults to choose whether or not to wear a helmet. If we were to look at motorcycle related fatalities in all of the states which have universal helmet laws and compare them to motorcycle related fatalities in states which allow choice, shouldn’t we see a disparity between the two
groups of states?

If wearing a motorcycle helmet reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 42%, shouldn’t we see a rather large disparity between the two groups of states? Interestingly, that is not the case. Between 2008
and 2011, jurisdictions with mandatory motorcycle helmet laws averaged 60.26 motorcycle related fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles.

States with laws allowing adults to choose whether or not to wear a helmet averaged 57.90 motorcycle related fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles during that same period. Given those numbers, I am left with no choice but
to seriously question the claims made by the CPSTF.

Finally let’s look at the CPSTF’s conclusion with regard to the economic impact of universal helmet laws. The CPSTF claims that 12 studies
looked at the economic benefit after implementation of universal helmet laws, and that four directly comparable studies reported benefits ranging from $29.3 million dollars to $96.1 million dollars per 100,000 registered motorcycles per year. They further assert that five studies looked at the economic impact of repealing universal helmet laws and that three directly comparable studies reported increased costs ranging from $1.8 million
dollars to $27.2 million dollars per 100,000 registered motorcycles per year. At face value, that would cause one to conclude that universal helmet laws save money, while laws allowing choice cost money.

However, let’s ask a few important questions. First, how did these studies come to these conclusions? The first claim is that the implementation of universal helmet laws resulted in benefits ranging from 29.3 million dollars to 96.1 million dollars per 100,000 registered motorcycles.

Why is there a gap of 67 million dollars between these estimates? That seems rather large. How were these estimates calculated? How old are these studies? Other than Louisiana, no
state has implemented a universal helmet law in over twenty years. Additionally, why is it that the costs suffered from repealing a universal
helmet law is anywhere between 1.8 million dollars and 27.2 million dollars, but the benefit of implementing one is anywhere between 29.3 million dollars to 96.1 million dollars? Shouldn’t the numbers be the same? Shouldn’t the cost of repealing a universal helmet law be comparable to the benefit of implementing one?

Finally, if the CPSTF’s claims are true, why don’t we see higher health and motor vehicle insurance premiums in states which allow choice while seeing lower premiums in states with universal helmet laws? I highly doubt that the insurance industry would simply absorb such costs without passing them on to the consumer. Yet there is no evidence that states which allow adults to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet experience higher premiums than states which have universal helmet
laws.

In the end, every rider must decide for themselves whether they believe that universal motorcycle helmet laws are a reasonable restriction on riders, or an unwarranted intrusion upon personal choice. I would merely
suggest that in making that decision we not simply accept as true recommendations and conclusions merely because they come from official sounding entities. Groups can have agendas, and a study can be a tool for advocacy rather than an objective analysis of accurate data.

Speaking for myself, I find the latest recommendation of the CPSTF to be the former and not the latter.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN ON SUNDAYS–
An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.

A cop pulls him over. “So,” says the cop to the driver, “where have ya been?”

“Why, I’ve been to the pub of course,” Slurs the drunk.

“Well,” says the cop, “it looks like you’ve had quite a few to drink this evening.”

“I did all right,” the drunk says with a smile.

“Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?”

“Oh, thank heavens,” sighs the drunk.

“For a minute there, I thought I’d gone deaf.”

SUNDAY GUN NUT REPORT–Outrage of the Week: RI State Senator tells Second Amendment Supporter to “Go *Bleep* Yourself”– This week’s outrage comes to us by way of Rhode Island; from the Rhode Island State House, as a matter of fact. It was there, at the State House, that State Sen. Josh Miller (D-Cranston, Warwick) had one of those defining moments. Something along the lines of Michael Dukakis and the tank ad, or Howard Dean and the infamous scream. Only this was different, in that it was disgraceful–not only to Sen. Miller, but to his office and the people he serves. And, it offers insight into the kind of politician, and person, Miller is.

Following a March 18, gun control event at the State House, Sen. Miller was approached by a Truth Radio Show host, Dan Bidondi, who confronted Miller over the Second Amendment.

“The Second Amendment shall not be infringed, you people need to understand that,” Bidondi says.

Sen. Miller’s response (and the response of a photographer) will floor you. Well, see for yourself–but we warn you–the language is OBSCENE. Watch the exchange here.

Such an outrageous response, coming from an elected official–and at the State House, no less–is not only disgraceful, but graphically demonstrates the senator’s utter arrogance and complete disrespect for his constituents. He should be ashamed of himself.

Radio show host Bidondi recently asked his listeners to rethink their selection of Sen. Miller as a legislator.

“Voters, ask yourself ‘Would you want to re-elect a foul-mouthed anti-constitutional, Second-Amendment-hating senator?'”

Good question. We hope voters remember the (dis)-Honorable Sen. Miller’s vulgar response when he comes up for reelection.

LET’S RIDE—I mentioned our vast list of projects for this year including: Unbrako Fasteners, Conceptus, Books, 5-Ball Racing, Bikernet headquarters projects, 5-Ball apparel and the list goes on. But we must all remember to take time out for loved ones and for the spirit in ourselves. It can’t always be work all the time. We need those Zen moments to maintain the proper balance.

And of course you need the touch of a woman, and the notion of family awareness, so take the time to shift ambition out of gear and relax. I make a point of it. Besides there’s a new redhead in my future.

Part of the equation is going for a ride. Our SmokeOut and Sturgis plans are laid out. And this afternoon I’m taking the mudflap girl FXR out for a test ride.

Ride Free Forever,
