MORE MOTORCYCLES PLEASE Sunday POST FOR AUGUST 4TH 2013

Hey,

Is life nuts or what? Sturgis is happening in a big way. Klocks had their party. Rogue got food poison and was held up, but he’s there now and attending all the action. Not bad for 72 years old. Indian served up their new models to the delight of the media. For the first time in history the Motorcycle Riders Foundation will be in front of their constituents at the Broken Spoke.

Motorcycle sales were down last quarter, but brothers and sisters still dream of new models and riding free. Dar Holdsworth will step onto a Buffalo Chip Stage with Toby Keith and announce their plans for building the Brass Balls Cycles brand. You’ll love this news. Motus is building new high-powered sport bikes, and a company is building a 100-mile electric bike that kicks ass on everything. That’s not all, Ronin bought all the leftover Buells and is working with Gard Hollinger for ISR Brakes. Gard is hoping to have his first ARCH motorcycle up and running by the end of the year. It’s amazing.

I love it. Polaris rescues the historic Indian brand, all the above entrepreneurs are building motorcycle brands, and a country western singer is building a motorcycle company, yet the state of Michigan and the country can’t fix Detroit, and the entire European Union can’t straighten out the economy in Greece.

Could it be government officials trying to stay elected? Amazing. Let’s hit the news and go for a ride—

The Sunday Post is sponsored it part by Bikerpics.org.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE FILE, MALE BLONDE SECTION— A woman phoned her blonde neighbor man and said: “Close your curtains the next time you & your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday.”

To which the blonde man replied:”Well, the joke’s on all of you because I wasn’t even at home yesterday.”

A blonde man is in the bathroom and his wife shouts: “Did you find the shampoo?”

He answers, “Yes, but I’m not sure what to do… it’s for dry hair, and I’ve just wet mine.”

MRF REPORT FROM WASHINGTON D.C.–Hey everyone, just finished another successful meeting with house transportation committee chair bill shuster. He has once again agreed to include the motorcycle only checkpoint language in the next highway bill as well as continue the funding for motorcycle safety.

That doesn’t mean we can sit back on HR 1861. we still need a lot of cosponsors.

Over about the past year I started to notice something. Members of the House are now seemingly, taking a cue from the Senate and just stop co sponsoring most legislation. Look at the the ethanol bills over half the country hates ethanol and those bills have just a handful of
cosponsors and they are being lobbied on by big oil! The all out ban bill, which most people are supporting, has just 43 cosponsors.

The Senate traditionally does not co-sponsor most legislation that they are direct authors of. Its weird but the house is sort of doing the same thing. All that to say that yes co-sponors are extremely important but in the case of the motorcycle legislation we have a back up plan of
forthcoming highway bill, my guess is just about two years away.

Hope everyone is having a great summer!

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIVE GOVERNMENT WORD OF THE DAY
bemused bih-MYOOZD, adjective:
1. bewildered or confused.?2. lost in thought; preoccupied.
He was not only bemused by the voice he had heard. He was bemused by to the very grandeur of the position which he aspired.
— Robert Penn Warren, All the King’s Men, 1946
She said nothing else, she just watched his quiet bemused and intent face as he plumbed his empty pockets one by one.
— William Faulkner, Pylon, 1935
Bemused comes from the Old French muser meaning “to ponder,” “dream” or “waste time.” It entered English in the late 1800s, though the verb form bemuse has existed in English since the early-to-mid 1700s.

BIKERNET MASSAGE PARLOR MENU DISCUSSION
“The lingo was filled with acronyms (a section on the site helped me decipher them) such as YMMV—your miles may vary—she may do certain things, like DFK (deep French kissing) with one client but not with all clients. DATY meant dining at the Y and referred to whether the provider allowed the client to eat her out.

BBBJ meant bare back blow job—she’ll suck your dick without a condom. A trip to Greece implied she takes it up the ass (for an extra 100 roses). FBSM stood for full body sensual massage, which amounted to a HJ—hand job.

The most treasured and expensive category was GFE—girl friend experience, where you get to have sex like you’re with your girlfriend—dfk daty and bbbj—though still use a condom when plowing her promised land. Top notch providers—all quite beautiful—offered GFE for 500 dollars an hour.”

THE MAGPUL RONIN–Ronin Motorworks is pleased to announce the official release of the “Magpul Ronin” in 2013.?

The original Magpul Ronin was an experimental concept motorcycle born of a Magpul Industries Corp. design exercise. Taken from the Japanese word for a samurai who no longer has a master, the name “Ronin” was chosen after the Buell Motorcycle Company ceased production and closed its doors in 2009. The model 1125R was selected due to its high level of performance and aesthetic potential, both of which were never fully realized in the motorcycle’s original form.

After Magpul unveiled the original experimental prototype in 2010, Denver-based Ronin Motorworks, a wholly independent business and legal entity, was formed to investigate the possibility of manufacturing a production version of the concept bike.

Ronin Motorworks hired a staff of designers and engineers from the motorcycling industry and spent the next year and a half evaluating the initial Magpul design and reengineering every facet and component of the bike from scratch using the original prototype as inspiration. In early 2012, design of the new motorcycle was completed, and the bike was authorized for licensed sale under the Magpul name. At that time, the decision was made to move forward with a limited-production run using new Buell 1125 chassis that had been kept in inventory.

Limited to a production run of 47 Ronin motorcycles, each hand-built bike will be issued a name – in lieu of a serial number – that corresponds with each of the 47 Ronin of ancient Japanese lore. An initial release of 10 bikes in the original silver and black trim will start at $38,000. There will be multiple incarnations in the line at price points corresponding with their finish and features.

Release of the Ronin models will begin in mid-2013 and will occur in stages until the 47th Ronin leaves the workshop, at which time production will cease.

Send us an email and we’ll contact you with updates, availability and news about the evolution of the Ronin.

HOW TO STAY HYDRATED
You’ve no doubt heard that proper hydration is the key to sustaining a healthy body. When was the last time you thought about the way in which you hydrate on an average basis?

The Centers for Disease Control reports that for many Americans, being thirsty means grabbing sugary sodas, caffeinated drinks and other calorie-laden beverages on the go. Over time, this can lead to a variety of problems, including trouble with shedding unwanted pounds. What you drink has just as much effect on your overall wellness as what you eat.1

Here’s just a sample of the calories found in the common beverages2 that many consumers drink annually:

Type of Beverage   Calories in 12 ounces  Calories in 20 ounces
 Fruit Punch  192     320
 100% Apple Juice 192   300
 100% Orange Juice  168  280
 Lemonade  168  280
Regular Lemon Lime Soda  148  247
 Regular Cola  136  227
Sweet Lemon Ice Tea 135   225
 Tonic Water  124  207
 Regular Ginger Ale  124  207
 Sports Drink  99  165
 Fitness Water 18   36
 Unsweetened Ice Tea

Diet Soda (with Aspartame)   0*     0*
 Carbonated Water (unsweetened)
 Water

*Some diet soft drinks can contain a small number of calories that are not listed on the nutrition facts label.

As you can see, water has zero calories, with no added sugars or caffeine. So why do many consumers allow sodas and coffee to be their primary source of nourishment? Clean healthy water IS the best choice for optimal hydration.
Your body needs water for complete hydration and balance! Only Kangen Water® from Enagic® hydrates you with mineral-rich, alkaline water created by amazing ionizing process.

This can give you optimal hydration. And with the fresh, mild taste of Kangen Water®, you’ll find how easy it is to consume the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day for optimal hydration.

BIKERNET SUNDAY VIDEO OF THE DAY—You’re going to love this: Two minutes of Ho Chi Minh City intersection fun…

Poll Finds Pro-Gunners More Politically Involved–A recently published poll from the Pew Research Center found that there is “a substantial gap” between those who prioritize gun rights and those who prioritize gun control when it comes to political involvement, with pro-gunners being more politically active and donating more money than their anti-gun counterparts.

The poll found that “The biggest difference is in the area of making contributions to activist organizations: 25% of those who prioritize gun rights say they have, at some point, contributed money to an organization that takes a position on the issue, but just 6% of those who prioritize gun control have done so.”

The poll also found that gun rights supporters are more politically active, with 16 percent of them having contacted a public official to express an opinion on gun policy, compared to just 11 percent of gun control supporters.

These findings should come as no surprise to NRA members. Back in May, we reported on the fact that many ignorant and politically motivated observers wrongly attribute NRA’s victories in Congress last spring, as well as all of our past successes, to NRA’s perceived financial might (which, by the way, is dwarfed by that of billionaire anti-gun zealots like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg).

We noted that financial resources, when spent wisely, are certainly crucial to any organization’s success, BUT what makes NRA successful is our extraordinary grassroots efforts–and more specifically, those of our members and volunteers–who typically make the difference between legislative success or failure through–again–their continued political activism.

We also referenced a Forbes.com article, which surmised that NRA’s success is based on the fact that we “simply execute the basics extremely well.”

The article’s author defines “five reasons the NRA won the recent gun control debate that have nothing to do with politics,” including our leadership style, the superior quality of our grassroots base of support, and the knowledge of the gun issue exhibited by our volunteers and members. In other words, most NRA members and Second Amendment supporters are fully engaged in the legislative and political processes.

Speaking of polling data, a group called the “Third Way” also weighed-in on gun-related polls recently.

The Third Way is a liberal–and among other things, anti-gun– “think-tank” based in D.C. In fact, according to their online biographies, three founders of Third Way also founded, and/or were high-level executives for, the anti-gun group “Americans for Gun Safety.”

The Third Way claims to have “analyzed” recent polling data to “understand the political consequences of a vote against the Manchin-Toomey background check bill.”

Third Way claims their findings show that “Americans are less likely to re-elect Senators who oppose background checks,” and that “Americans are pledging to stand by Senators who voted for background checks and help them win re-election.”

The group’s anti-gun bias may have affected how they analyzed background check polling data, but given the activism gap that exists, the question of whether responses recently given to pollsters will result in action at the voting booth more than a year from now remains to be seen. The Pew Research Center’s findings suggest it might not.

ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE WANTS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD–The Mission RS isn’t notable because it’s electric or because it’s designed and made in America. Or even because it’s really, really fast. Why you’re going to sit down and read every single word of this world-first review is simply because it’s a superior performance motorcycle to any yet made. Period.

The RS is essentially the Mission R that won that race at Laguna Seca two years ago, refined and turned into a slick, consumer-ready product. Same James Parker-designed chassis, similar bodywork, same motor; upgraded batteries and an incredibly slick new dash. Very few production bikes can claim to be this close a race machine.

This $58,999 RS model is limited to just 40 units — one for each second it finished ahead of the competition at the 2011 TTXGP race at Laguna Seca. A race at which it set a 1:31.3 lap record for electric bikes that stands to this day and would have placed it 5th on the grid of the AMA Daytona SportBike race that weekend. Competitors included MotoCzysz, Lightning and Brammo.
As an interesting aside, it managed that time despite being limited to a 130mph top speed while competitors were free to hit 140mph or more on the track’s main straight.

Distinguishing the RS from the $30,000 R are the same gas-charged Ohlins FGR forks and BST carbon wheels as the race bike. The R will be equipped with the still top-shelf Ohlins NIX30 forks, forged Marchesini wheels and Ohlins TTX36 shock. The R’s components are the same as fitted to the $30,000 Ducati 1199 Panigale R, the fastest production motorcycle ever.

“We started with a blank slate and set out to create the best motorcycle we possibly could,” explains Mission Motorcycles president Mark Seeger. Beyond components like the suspension, brakes and wheels, you’ll find nothing off-the-shelf or adapted from another machine. Even the suspension linkage is a unique design.

With 15kWh of battery on board this test bike, weight stands at 540lbs. In production, equipped with improved battery chemistry, that weight will drop by 20lbs. 12, 15 and 17kWh packs will be available, giving the bike 105, 120 and 140 miles of real world, highway speed range respectively. Stay in town, on surface streets and the largest pack is good for 230 miles.

Recharge time? Well here’s another trick unique to Mission. They built the charger into the battery controller, using the motor as a transformer. That means, so long as you can find a 220v outlet (the same as most houses have to run the dryer and washing machine), recharge time is just an hour. No special equipment, no special charging stations, just a laundry room outlet and zero to full charge in around 60 minutes.

THINK ABOUT THIS THE NEXT TIME YOU PULL INTO A GAS STATION AND IT TAKES 10 MINUTES TO REFUEL FOR 250 MILES.

In production spec, the AC induction motor develops 160bhp and 120lb-ft of torque. The motor itself is actually capable of 220bhp and 160lb-ft, but current battery technology isn’t sufficient to create that kind of power over a reasonable range, so, as battery technology develops over the next few years, Mission will be able to turn up the output on customer bikes. Consider it future proofing. Top speed is currently limited to 150mph (again to conserve juice) and 0-60mph should take around three seconds, depending on how big a wheelie you decide to pull.

Did we mention the Mission wheelies off the throttle?

The Mission RS you see here is the limited-to-40, collector’s edition and, as such, costs a bunch of money at $58,999. The regular Mission R will enter production early next year and retail for $32,499 before a $2,500 federal tax credit. Spend up to the 17kWh model with both the tech package and a faster charger and you’re up to a maximum possible spend of $43,949 before that same tax credit. Deposits are just $1,000, but you’ll have to get in line behind Seeger, Ip and most of the rest of the Mission team, who are buying theirs at full price.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND COP MUSEUM
Museum keeps public safety top-of-mind– Los Angeles leaders take public safety seriously and the safety of residents and visitors is a top priority. To keep our city safe, the men and women who work in public safety in Los Angeles have developed strong partnerships with the community, local, state and federal officials and the Los Angeles Police Museum.

To get a better understanding of how police officers put public safety first, the public can go behind the badge at the city’s oldest surviving police station, built in 1925. This unique museum pays tribute to the men and women that put their lives on the line to serve the city of Los Angeles, and exhibits the various tools and systems in place to help support them. Visitors can check out everything from Charles Manson’s booking photo to an array of vintage cop cars. True crime fans will appreciate the exhibition detailing the 1997 North Hollywood Bank of America holdup, with the original vehicles and disguises used by the perpetrators. If you’re thinking of committing a holdup, try scaring yourself straight by taking a mug shot and sitting in one of the jail cells.

Make sure to bring a camera, as you’ll get lots of great photo ops taking pictures of the kids sitting on a police motorcycle or at the controls of a helicopter. Plus, you can also take photos inside an actual jail cell that was in use when the station itself was still in operation. You’re sure to have a fascinating time as you explore the Los Angeles Police Museum, and you can leave by taking home some brochures with valuable crime prevention tips for your home or business.

You can show your support for public safety by clicking here and voting for the Police Historical Society Museum as LA’s most awesome museum.

Hurry, the voting period will end on August 15, 2013.

QUICK HELPFUL New Bikernet Reader Comment!–Editor’s Blog: Trike News, Month of September

THE RATTLESNAKE CODE OF THE WEST–After the Boston bombing the news media has spent days and weeks trying to determine why these men did what they did. They want to know what America did to make these brothers so angry with us. They want to know why these men were not arrested before they did something so terrible. The media is in a tizzy about this new era of home grown radicals, and about why they could live among us and still hate us.

A friend of mine from Texas explained it all to me:

“Here in west Texas I have rattlesnakes on my place, living among us. I have killed a rattlesnake on the front porch. I have killed a rattlesnake on the back porch. I have killed rattlesnakes in the barn, in the shop and on the driveway. In fact, I kill every rattlesnake I encounter.

I kill rattlesnakes because I know a rattlesnake will bite me and inject me with poison. I don’t stop to wonder why a rattlesnake will bite me; I know: It will bite me because it’s a rattlesnake and that’s what rattle- snakes do. I don’t try to reason with a rattlesnake…I just kill it. I don’t try to get to know the rattlesnake better so I can find a way to live with the rattlesnakes and convince them not to bite me…I just kill them.

I don’t quiz a rattlesnake to see it I can find out where the other snakes are, because:

(a) it won’t tell me
(b) I already know they live on my place.

So, I just kill the rattlesnake and move on to the next one.

I don’t look for ways I might be able to change the rattlesnake to a non-poisonous rat snake…I just kill it. Oh, and on occasion, I accidentally kill a rat snake because I thought it was a rattlesnake at the time. Also, I know, for every rattlesnake I kill, two more are lurking out there in the brush. In my lifetime I will never be able to rid my place of rattlesnakes. Do I fear them? No!

Do I respect what they can do to me? Yes! And because of that respect I give them the fair justice they deserve…I kill them….”

“I love this country, it’s the government I’m afraid of.”

NICE EARRINGS—

–Bob Clark

THE BANDIT’S CANTINA SUNDAY PICNIC-
A Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at the town’s annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter.

“This baked ham is really delicious,” the priest teased the rabbi. “You really ought to try it. I know it’s against your religion, but I can’t understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don’t know what you’re missing. You just haven’t lived until you’ve tried Mrs. Hall’s prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?”

The rabbi looked at the priest with a big grin and said, “At your wedding.”

SUNDAY BLUES—Every Sunday I scramble thinking that I’ll have time after the Post for a short ride, or to tinker in the shop, then the day slips away. In a sense it’s motivational, and I’m trying to take a Zen-like approach, and just relax. Sure, it doesn’t make any sense either, but WTF.

I’m grappling with my screenplay kick off. I need to deal with a character issue, then it will all fall together. A similar issue strikes at our grant effort. I just read a grant proposal that’s all about proving that we should all wear helmets. If only they would “Think Freedom First.” We wouldn’t have these issues.

But now for a really important issue. The next Redhead for Bandit. Hold on, and hold on for Sturgis Reports next week.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
