BIG ENGINE SUNDAY POST FOR FEBRUARY 24, 2013

Hey,

Hang on for today. I need to investigate UGG boots. I find the soft ones last about a year then blow out. I’m looking for an upgrade. I went digging through their site and to an Urban Feet shoe store in San Pedro. I found two different UGG boots, similar style, but the factory UGGs are $250. Holy shit.

The performance editor and I jammed to Bennett’s Performance yesterday to follow the progress on Eric’s S&S 106-inch Twin Cam upgrade kit. He’s hoping for around 118 hp and similar torque. He will also be running Branch O’Keefe flowed heads.

Since we are starting on a Bonneville trike path and need all the horsepower we can get reliably from a Twin Cam, my ears have perked up. I’m an Evo fan to the bone, but when it comes to monster Bonneville power, twin cam looks to be the format. I kick myself a tad when I say that. Branch and Bennett’s have found a very powerful reliable format they call Dave’s. It’s a JIMS 116-inch engine with Branch heads built for Dave’s Softail. It pulls consistently 131 horsepower and torque, and he has won at the drags over and over with a B motor, and never above 6,200 rpms.

“Every time we build one of these motors,” John O’Keefe said, “we receive the same results. Strong reliable horsepower.” He is in the process of doctoring a JIMS 131-inch engine right now, and of course we are looking hard at the new JIMS 135-inch monster. We will bring you more reports as our investigation continues.

While hanging at JIMS and taking notes, in walks Bruce R. Ranyard. His shop is around the corner from Bikernet’s Headquarters. When he mentioned Cryogenics, my ears perked up. I remembered the term from 20 years ago, a cooling process that enhances the melicular structure of metal. It’s a process discovered after space travel. I immediately turned to our esteemed performance editor. He is working with an engineer who is developing a forging process, and it includes Cryogenics. Mysteries unfold. We will check out American Motorcycles in Wilmington in the very near future.

KEYBOARD FOR MOTORCYCLE SHIPPING–
The Keyboard Corporation has, from its very beginnings in 1978, been a specialized transporter of high value, relatively heavy, and easily blemished products from the manufacturer/distributor to their dealer network.

At the beginning of the new millennium, a chance meeting between the President of Keyboard and an Indian Motorcycle dealer led to the development of a unique delivery system for the Motorcycle Industry. Dennis Robey, Keyboard’s President, listened as the dealer described the difficulties he experienced in getting delivery of motorcycles from Indian’s plant in Gilroy, CA to his dealership in Kentucky. Deliveries often took weeks and when they finally did arrive, the motorcycles often required expensive and time consuming prep work before they could be seen on the showroom floor.

Dennis developed, from scratch, a completely new platform to be used exclusively in the delivery of uncrated motorcycles. The first 100 of these were fabricated internally (each platform has over one hundred metal parts) and the first load of motorcycles was picked up in Gilroy and delivered to the dealerships personally by Dennis Robey. Within three months, Keyboard was the exclusive carrier of Indian Motorcycles. Although Indian subsequently went bankrupt, their dealers had seen the Keyboard system and had begun spreading the good word.

The following year Keyboard was selected by more than 30 different specialty motorcycle manufacturers as their preferred carrier. Today Keyboard is a major supplier of logistics services to the motorcycle industry and the leading provider of transportation services for uncrated motorcycles thanks in large part to Dennis’s dedication to problem solving and the resulting patented delivery platform.

MORE NEW D&D DEALERS—A couple of years ago D&D decided to go Dealer Direct, for several reasons, but it meant building their own dealer network. They’ve been highly successful in a very depressed market. We are now catching up with new dealers, but if you don’t find one in your neighborhood here, run to their web site for the full list.

OFFICER ACCUSED OF CONTACT WITH A PROSTITUTE–MELBOURNE — A Melbourne police officer was suspended Friday with pay for his connections to a prostitute. Officer Christopher Buccelli is accused of giving the woman a ride home without notifying supervisors and for violating a no-contact order by harassing her and her boyfriend.

The convicted prostitute also identified Buccelli as someone she had unpaid, consensual sex with at least once a week. He denied her claim. Buccelli will have to appeal the finding by Dec. 30 and explain at a hearing why he should not be released from duty as a police officer.
Buccelli has been with the department for three years.

A Melbourne police officer accused of meeting prostitutes for sex while on-duty has been fired.
According to a spokesperson for the Melbourne Police Department, Jose Otero is no longer with the department after the chief decided to terminate him.

Otero was out of a job as of Friday, July 20.
That’s just two days after News 13 reported that investigators said Otero had sex with at least four prostitutes while on the job.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the case and set up surveillance on Otero they said caught him picking up and dropping of prostitutes.

Otero has a court hearing on August 1.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT PERFORMANCE WORD OF THE DAY–
tensile TEN-suhl, adjective:
1. capable of being stretched or drawn out; ductile.?2. of or pertaining to tension: tensile strain.

Claire’s tensile fatures pull themselves tight with glee.
— Zadie Smith, On Beaut

One way of increasing the tensile strength in a wooden bow at any time of the year was to apply a sinew backing.

— Louis Bird, Jennifer S. H. Brown, Anne Lindsay, Telling Our Stories

This late Renaissance word tensile was derived in 1626 from the Latin verb tendere meaning “to stretch.”

D&D EXHAUST FOR A DYNA GLIDE—Part of our tech with Bennett’s performance includes installing this D&D system on Eric’s scooter.
“D&D systems come very complete,” said Eric, “including heat shields in place. It takes like five minutes to install a D&D system.”

BIKERNET DOWN UNDER BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–Irish Fire Insurance: A man and his wife moved back home to Cork, from London. The wife had a wooden leg and to insure it in Britain was £2000.00 a year!

When they arrived in Cork , they went to an Insurance agency to see how much it would cost to insure the wooden leg. The agent looked it up on the computer and said to the couple, ‘€39.00.’

The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheap here in Ireland to insure, because it cost him £2,000.00 in England!

The agent turned his computer screen to the couple and said, ‘Well, here it is on the screen, it says: *Any wooden structure, with a sprinkler system over it, is €39.00.*’

I always did find the Irish Logic far superior to most others.

CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS TESTING PROCEDURE– I’m assuming that companies are inquiring about the emissions aspect of why Vance & Hines was penalized, and as I understand it, it was because they sold uncertified motorcycle exhaust systems and parts that violated CARB’s aftermarket critical emission control parts regulation that went into effect in 2009.

No further law had been proposed, or is necessary to pass, for this regulation to be effective.

Essentially, the aftermarket exhaust manufacturers asked CARB to pass this regulation, because up until that time, there was no procedure for an aftermarket exhaust manufacturer to certify that their aftermarket exhaust system or parts would be equivalent to, or better than, stock OEM catalytic convertor exhaust systems and parts.

The regulation passed with little notice or fanfare, although the dealer association that I represent, the CMDA, tried to reduce the record keeping burdens on dealers, to no avail.

Stock OEM catalytic convertor systems and/or parts cannot be replaced with exhaust systems or parts that have not gone through the CARB certification process and obtain an E.O. (Executive Order) exemption from CARB’s tampering regulation before they offer them for sale, and send them here to be sold.

However, “slip on” mufflers, that are installed downstream of (after) the catalytic convertor and all of the exhaust system connections are legal to sell in California because they have no effect on emissions. One caveat, however — no adjustments to the fuel deliver system or anything else can be done with such an installation to accommodate the freer-flowing muffler, because that would increase emissions, and is considered illegal tampering.

The regulation can be found at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/motorcycle1/motorcycle1.htm

The list of legal exempted motorcycle exhaust aftermarket critical emission control parts is at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/motorcycle1/exempthmc.pdf.

As far as the cost and person to do the certifying, I’ll pass along the same advice to you, as I did to the other individual who contacted me, through you, for getting his line of custom motorcycles CARB certified —

I recommend the following company/person to handle an application for California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification of motorcycle exhaust system products.

I do not have personal knowledge of this individual for certification work, but he is the partner of Rob Harrison, a renowned motorcycle sound expert, based here in Southern California. Rob’s wife, Kathleen Wolf, handled motorcycle CARB certification until her untimely death in an automobile accident on business in Italy with her motorcycle manufacturer clients, a number of years ago. I knew Kathleen well, and she was an expert in CARB regulations.

Knowing Rob, he would only recommend (and partner with) someone very capable, so here is the individual’s contact information:
Ryan Tovatt, Tovatt Engineering, LLC., 17395 Mt. Mount Herrmann St., Ste. B,, Fountain Valley, CA 92708 (714) 785-6401 / (714) 436-0131

FYI — All of this being said, any exhaust system that will be granted a CARB E.O. will undoubtedly have to comply with the federal EPA’s noise standard that has been in effect since 1982.

I say that because a new California motorcycle noise compliance law went into effect on January 1st that calls for federal EPA motorcycle noise compliance labels on all aftermarket (and OEM) mufflers manufactured after January 1, 2013 for motorcycles manufactured after that same date.

I hope this helps!

NEW MEXICO CARELESS DRIVING BILL–
I have some great news Senate Bill 290 The Careless Driving Bill. It passed the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously. I feel this was the toughest committee we would face.

There was an amendment made to the bill which will added the definition of great bodily harm to the bill which is a good thing.

I would like to thank Jennifer Buntz from the bicyclist community who has testified as a expert witness and our to our NMMRO Stephanie Lennox who also testified on behalf of her parents who where killed on their motorcycle. It will now go on to the Senate Floor and then on to the House of Representatives where our friend Rep Rick Miera will do his magic again. Thank you to Senator John Ryan for his support and for Sponsoring this bill. Thank you to the Senate Public Affairs and Senate Judiciary Committee for there support.

The journey of the bill is not over but it is moving along. Thank you to all who wrote letters in support on our call to action and to the Defenders Program. My mind in already in gear for next year to work on a profiling and discrimination bill for New Mexico.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS–
NEW YORK GOING TO POT: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent his 11-years as mayor combating the evils of 16-oz drinks, cigarette smoking, transfats, gun ownership, and Styrofoam containers, but according to the mayor, marijuana is OK, as long as you possess only a little. In his last state-of-the-city address, Bloomberg announced that anyone stopped in the City in possession of only a small amount of pot would not be detained in jail. High time in the city.

IMMIGRATION POLL: A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday shows that more than half of all Americans think illegal immigrants should be deported. The poll found that 30 percent of Americans think most illegal immigrants should be deported, and 23 percent think all illegal immigrants should be deported. Only five percent of those polled believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States legally, while 31 percent believe most illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay. Fully 75 percent of Republicans think most or all illegal immigrants should be deported, compared to only 40 percent of Democrats who agree.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT APPROPRIATE WORD OF THE DAY–
whipsaw HWIP-saw, verb:
1. to subject to two opposing forces at the same time: The real-estate market has been whipsawed by high interest rates and unemployment. 2. to cut with a whipsaw. 3. to win two bets from (a person) at one turn or play, as at faro. 4. (of a trailer, railroad car, etc.) to swing suddenly to the right or left, as in rounding a sharp curve at high speed.

noun: 1. a saw for two persons, as a pitsaw, used to divide timbers lengthwise.

The hour was past midnight; rumor and slander continued to whipsaw the throng.

BIKERNET TECH INVESTIGATOR, INVESTIGATES PINION SHAFT TIMKEN BEARING SYSTEMS– Here are the photos from RB racing. These were from their 139 Orca engine. One is showing the rod bearing setup, ala Top Fuel & Pro Drag style with no bearing cages.

You see the assembled engine with the water cooled cylinders, ala Bob George type design.

Their clutch hub.
Also the Timken Bearing. setup and endplay check. This is a lot like the setup also from Delkron. The roller bearing for the pinion shaft is a aircraft type bearing.

RB racing also offers a service converting H-D swing arms from belt to chain drive. These look very well made. I was really impressed with the engineering and workmanship.

Finally there were Ron Trocks billet heads made back in the early ‘90s. Berry Gerolamy ported these for Ron. They were prototypes made on his four axis Okuma Howa mill.

NEW FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNET TOMORROW–
The shop is unreal. But you have to “gain” entry. It took me a while. Several emails and then phone calls with Baron’s “publicist” who then turned me over to the co-owner/curator of the shop, a very nice lady but somewhat “protective” of the place and the owner’s “legacy.”

After we met and spoke she allowed me the run of the place for about 20 minutes and then she had to go. If you want a contact for her let me know. I’ve been waiting more than six months to have a meeting with the Baron who’s been constructing a new workshop.

You saw his motorcycle…you would be totally amazed by the cars he’s built…literally Flash Gordon style rockets and street legal.

Let me know when you post the story and I can send her a link, which would facilitate a visit.

Check for the story sometime this in the Cantina under Digital Discovery. We will let you know if they will allow us past the security into the backstage area.–Bandit

 March Motorcycle Madness coming up

One day at a time and shit seems to happen in spite of any and all obstacles, which are damned few these days. The monster is perched on a Colorado Customs lift. Once we have the mechanical pieces completed, including: rear sets, shift linkage, wheels, composite rotors, street and track bars, and mounting for a GPS earthlink 270 mph speedo, then we can make an appointment with the Race Tech Suspension Team in Corona, CA. to dial in the chassis for straight-as-a-string-passes at warp speeds on the salt this summer. After suspension we head to San Jose for the dyno, then the highway for real seat time. Getting to know your hot rod is very important, your life depends on it. Safe, straight, and fast comin’ up.

See ya on the road and on the race track.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB LEADER ARRESTED IN SERIES OF RAIDS–
The national president of the Bandidos motorcycle club was arrested yesterday as part of a joint investigation between two Australian states, NSW and Victoria. Jason Addison was arrested during raids on nine homes on the NSW-Victorian border.

The investigation was examining the supply of prohibited drugs and the possession of illegal firearms. Also picked up in the raids were the local chapter president Ian Hoss Steward, 31, and the former local president Darren Varto, 40.

The operation began in May last year when police began investigating drug running by members of the Bandidos in Moama, a short drive from the Victorian border.

Four search warrants were executed yesterday as part of the operation, along with a further five in the town of Echuca, in Victoria. They included a raid on the Bandidos clubhouse, in Echuca, along with Addison’s house and his houseboat.

Officers allege that during the course of the inquiry they seized a stolen handgun, drugs, knives and assets including a motorbike, cash and a speedboat.

Police claim the area had proven to be a hotbed of motorcycle club activity, with them recently dealing with an incursion into the area by the Outlaws motorcycle club.

In October, Deniliquin-based officers formed strike force Fermium, which resulted in two members of the Outlaws being arrested, including the clubs president. Another person detained was the alleged sergeant-at-arms of the group.

VICE PRESIDENT’S ADVICE NOT ADVISABLE– As often as he puts his foot in his mouth, it’s a wonder Vice-President Joe Biden can walk. The often irascible and unpredictable Biden said this week, in an online Facebook town hall “chat” sponsored by Parents Magazine, that women who have to protect their homes and families from intruders should just walk outside and fire two blasts from a double barreled shotgun.

A FoxNews.com article reported that Biden claims to keep two shotguns locked up at his home, and that he has told his wife, Jill, to use them if she needs protection.

“I said, `Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony … take that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,”‘ Biden said.

That advice would be illegal in most situations, and dangerous both for the potential victim, and for the general public.

FROM SCHOOL TO SUCCESS “One Step at a Time”–
Power Sport Institute Graduate Richard Brant VT-14K,
Returns for Polaris Silver Training
2013’s First Polaris Dealer Training Class!

Story by Kira Dazcko

Richard came to PSI in September, 2011 interested in turning over a new leaf in life. Motorcycles were his passion and we wanted to help make that happen.

“I did some research of different schools that I wanted to attend and there was a lot of good feedback from the students that attended PSI. There is a dealership in my home town that I went and talked to about a job as a technician and they mentioned that I should go to school and that I should check out PSI.

“They had a graduate from PSI who worked there for a long time and did very well. Career Services approached me with a job opening and surprisingly it was the same shop that I stopped in to get a job originally, Northstar Power Sports in Hermitage, PA. Now I am a technician there part time and once I get out of school hopefully I will become a full time technician. Now that I am attending PSI, I have gained a lot of the basic skills that I did not have before. I am confident with the skills I have gained and feel comfortable with the tasks that I do.” – Richard Brant Graduate of PSI – September, 2012.

Richard came back to PSI in February 2013 for Polaris Silver ORV Class, He passed with flying colors, and shortly after graduating from PSI he is now a Polaris Silver Certified Technician.

Congratulations Richard Brant!

We asked Richard now that he is a graduate of PSI, if he missed coming to school, if he enjoyed the experience while attending PSI and is there any “words of wisdom” he may have for other students attending PSI?

“The most important thing that you need to do is everything in the program”, he laughed. “There were days that I would be doing a task and say, when am I ever going to do this in a shop, and now they come into play every day in the shop. I am really glad that I practiced staying neat and keeping everything organized while I am doing a task. Also electrical troubleshooting is huge. I do those kinds of tasks every day in the shop and it is a necessity if you are going to be a technician. There is so much you can learn if you go into class thinking, I can do this, just one step at a time. “

DRISCRIMINATORY MOTORCYCLE-ONLY STOPS–the states conducting widespread motorcycle-only discriminatory stops are Georgia, using non 2010 federal grant monies, and the State of New York with claimed state monies but the funds originally come from the feds.

Some states will be more forthcoming than others about the grant monies. All states, as far as I know, are eligible. Most of the states pull the sorts of grant funding down from the Fed via their state DOT or Highway safety office. This may be Governor’s Highway Safety, or AZDOT Safety office – not sure of the name of it but you get the picture.

Here is a link to NHTSA’s original policies regarding the funds and who can get it and put it to what use:

www.nhtsa.gov/nhtsa/…/GrantFundPolicy_mkm_revJuly07.pdf

I wish I could be more accurately helpful regarding which states perform motorcycle-only check points and the funding of such. In NC, while we did pass a law stopping this sort of thing, when it was going on the highway officials said the monies used were not the grant monies. To my mind it was all shuffling around of dollars and paperwork.

While you’re there, you’ll be able to see all the new S&S performance products for 2013, and what’s even better, you can talk to our professional staff about making your bike as fast as you want it to be. That’s a real plus because these folks know about fast!

Free S&S Oil Filter

Another good reason to stop by the S&S semi display is that we’ve set up a special oil change deal with several local Daytona area S&S Dealers. S&S has just introduced a new line of high performance drivetrain lubricants, and we’d like you to give them a try. So have your oil changed with S&S full synthetic or petroleum based engine oil at one of the specified dealers, and we’ll throw in a premium S&S oil filter for free! It’s a great deal, but you have to stop by the S&S display and pick up a coupon to get it while supplies last. Some restrictions apply.

New Exhaust

S&S has a number of new exhaust products to make your bike fast, good looking, and great sounding. We have our new 4” Race/Tour mufflers for Harley-Davidson® baggers and a complete high performance S&S Power Tune Sport exhaust system for 2004 and later Sportster® models. You probably already know that performance exhaust combined with an S&S high flowing air cleaner kit is the first step of the S&S 4-Step Performance Program. Speaking of the 4-Step Program, you can check out the whole 4-Step lineup while you’re there, including the new Throttle Hog throttle bodies for 2008 and later baggers with throttle by wire.

New Engines

Owners of 1999-’06 big twins will be interested in the new S&S T-Series Long Block engines. They come without fuel or ignition systems, so you can use what you already have. Using some of your existing components, along with the new lower price lets you go fast and save a pile of cash. Don’t think we’ve forgotten you guys with 2007 or later big twins. Just ask our guys about a complete S&S engine for your bike!

Modern Muscle, Vintage Vibe

Vintage enthusiasts will love the Flathead Power section of our display. Great American made parts for Repair, Restoration, and Retro-custom. The Three-R’s of old school!

Daytona bound? Make sure you put S&S on your to-do list! Maybe even your bucket list!

TAKE THE REST OF THE DAY OFF—Our 1928 Shovelhead is running. We need to torque the head-bolts once more, check the belt. Check the charging system, check for leaks, check the fluids, check the tanks, check the seat, and take this puppy for a ride.

Then I can shift to the Mudflap Girl FXR. The engine is in place, and George the Wild Brush promised my pinstriped pieces by Monday, but I need the Chris Morrison touched up Tank to finish her off. I’m going to install the new Digital Dawg keyless ignition, and a new Crane Cam ignition system.

It just dawned on me that this system might come with a coil, and I will test new Nology plug wires and plugs.

There are the shop projects. Now for Bikernet content. I will post and new Iron Works featured Spitfire Sportster with a lovely blonde tattooed baby tomorrow, a wild Flash Gordon feature from Paul Garson, my Midnight Rider, and the Triking Viking’s review of an new Los Angeles shop, Deus. Here’s what they said:

Deus ex Machina (god from the machine) roared into Australia’s cultural consciousness in 2006, with some neatly customised motorcycles and a quaint notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. Deus ex Machina is a step bigger than a brand: it’s a culture. Our openness and enthusiasm strike a chord with people, wherever they are…

The week hasn’t even started and already it’s packed with content and action. We even have progress on our Sailor Jerry/ Bikernet Mural on the side of our building. This could be good.

So, hang on for this coming week. It looks to be a good one, full of action, suspense, intrigue, progress, and passion. What more could you ask for?

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
