10-DAY STURGIS COUNTDOWN SUNDAY POST ACTION

Hey,

The world is moving fast and the Badlands are calling. I don’t know where to start, so I won’t. We need to wrap up the Post so we can ride to Bennett’s for their open house with the Branch O’keefe headwork guys next door, and the Signal Hillbillies playing out front.

Should be a blast. We will be riding four Bikernet built customs, the Sturgis Chop, Salt Shaker, Shrunken FXR, and Rootbeer Float (built by Kent at Lucky Devil’s in Houston, so it will run like a top). Let’s see how many times we break down…
Let’s hit it:

JOKER MACHINE CABLE LEVER ASSEMBLIES– By request, these high performance cable lever assemblies were designed by Joker Machine for the top riders on the “Speedway Racing” circuit in Europe. All of the parts in this unit are meticulously CNC machined from blocks of American billet aluminum – (structurally superior over inexpensive cast units out there). – They also lend themselves to be a top-grade alternative to the “norm”, when building a first-class road- racer, Cafe’ or vintage project bike.

FEATURES ARE:
• User freindly “Ergonomic” design and styling that functions as well as it looks! – the levers have excellent feel with our ventilated and contoured “finger grab” area.
• Built to last and be serviceable – our lever action is superb due to the use of our “Oilite Bronze” pivot bushing which is mated with a stainless steel pivot pin and nut assy. – which may be replaced without sacrificing the entire lever due to wear.
• Pivot pin features a slotted top that can be easily serviced with the use of a “blade” screwdriver – or a speedway mechanics clutch adjustment tool for quick removal of the lever from the perch, if necessary for cleaning, etc.
• Great for clutch adjustments as requested by top riders – Cable free-play adjustments can be “fine-tuned” with our fine thread, solid brass adjuster knob and lock nut feature.
• These units will fit onto either 7/8″ or 1″ handlebars – (a “semi-slip” polymer reducer bushing is included for 7/8″ bars, that doubles as a “pivoting-slip” feature in race applications should the bike go down.
• Right side lever assy. is available with a brake light switch option for street bike and/or vintage bike projects. (Contact Joker for information about ordering this type).
• Perch has a standard mirror mounting hole that accepts most mirrors with 5/16″ or 8MM mounting studs or bolts.
• All aluminum surfaces are anodized in your choice of “two-tone” (hard black perch and clear lever), or “mono-tone” (all clear), colors.

ACCIDENT STORY OF THE YEAR–Calif. motorcyclist lands in van back seat, unhurt VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A motorcyclist who plowed into a minivan landed unscathed in the back seat, and the driver didn’t realize it until he turned into his nearby driveway, authorities said.

“We’re calling this one a non-injury collision with a twist,” Karen Hunt, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County sheriff’s Victorville station, told the Victorville Daily Press.

The van was slowing to make a left turn when the motorcycle rear-ended it Thursday.

Callers reporting the accident told authorities: “We don’t know where the rider is,” and there was concern he might have slid under the van, Hunt said.

“That’s when it started to sound ominous,” she said.

In reality, the rider had flown through the van’s back window and landed in the backseat. The van driver continued to his home less than a half-block away, where he called out to his wife that he’d been rear-ended and needed to return to the accident scene.

As he turned around to back out of the driveway, he saw the dazed biker.

The rider’s helmet absorbed most of the impact, and he only asked for an ice pack for his hand, Hunt said. He did not receive further medical treatment.

Neither man was cited for the accident. Their names were not immediately released.

In the past five years, the New England Walkers for Knockers has raised $115,000 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. 2011 Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show & Calendar Girl Music Festival
Jim Giuffra and the Girls of AFT Customs make it Five in a Row!–
The Queen Mary Seawalk Village, Long Beach, CA , Jan 1st 2011 – The 20th annual Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show presented by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, America’s premier streetbike event returned to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA on Saturday July 16th. The legendary event celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a move from it’s traditional Queen Mary Event Park location, to dockside next to the historic Queen Mary ocean liner in the exciting Seawalk Village which replicates an old British seaside town for a step back in history. The move to the new, smaller location was a reflection of the economy which has has impacted the custom and sportbike market so hard the last few years.

Making history this year was builder Jim Giuffra and the beautiful spokes models of AFT Customs / www.AFTcustoms.com who created not one, but two all-new customs bikes to premier at this year’s Calendar Show Bike Building Championship. The 4-time consecutive Best of Show and Metric Class winners were back to try and retain their titles and they did. Their very unique and original 1970 Honda CB750 based custom sportbike named “Sentoh” featured a hand built perimeter frame, a single Mikuni HSR45 carb fed 4-tract induction system, hand made exhaust and kickstart system and modern RaceTech racebike suspension and Beringer brakes. Sentoh emerged out of the Sportbike Class, amid fierce completion prom the other classes including Pro Builder, to take 2011 Best of Show and give AFT Customs their 5th consecutive Calendar Show win.

Jim Gianatsis congratulates Hiroyouki Hirato, who flew in from Japan with his bike to win Pro Builder Class.

Garnering 1st Place in the top Pro Builder Class was new comer Hiroyouki Hirata of BB Custom Factory / www.Custom-BB.com in Hiroshima, Japan. He flew in with his bike just for the Calendar Show, and like his own bike building idol Shinya Kimura did 6 years ago to confirm his reputation in the world of custom bike building, Hirata has now firmly established himself also as one of the world’s premier custom bike builders. His bike is based off a 1990 Harley FLHTC and then was fully modified to the theme of “Japanese Culture”.

The other custom bike premiered this year by AFT was ‘Azumati’ – a VT750 Bobber/Street tracker being built on commission for the Jackson Rancheria Indian Casino. Asumati is a Miwuk Indian word meaning grizzly bear, the monarch of the forest. In Miwuk stories the bear is a symbol of great strength and courage. This bike is fierce with a Yamaha R1 front end, Race Tech Piggyback Rear Shocks, a hidden radiator, CR450 front hub and brake. It took 2nd Place in Pro Builder behind Hirita.

New Lower $20 spectator admission this year, as always included the Calendar Motorcycle Show with its Calendar Bike Building Championship, celebrity Bike Builders, leading Manufacturers, Vendors, the Calendar Girl Music Festival and all-day admission to the famed Queen Mary Ghost Ship with the Saturday Night Builder’s Party in the Queen’s Observation Bar. Spectators also get complimentary admission aboard the historic Queen Mary Ghost Ship, and entry to the Saturday Night Iron & Lace Calendar Builders Party with a live band in the ship’s Observation Bar. Exhibitor display and Vendor prices were also reduced by Jim Gianatsis to help industry partners in the current economy.

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys present the Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show with Associate Sponsors Iron Works Magazine, Blanco Basura Liquor, Mikuni Carburetors, Bikernet.com, Meguiar’s Car Care Products and the FastDates.com Calendars. BIKERNET INSURANCE WEEKEND MEMO–Discovering the CAN-AM Spyder and other three wheel wonders.
Is it just me or am I seeing more and more Trikes on the road these days. The ever-increasing popularity of trikes, whether with 2-wheels at the rear or front of the bike, has clearly gotten our attention at Bikernet Insurance. As a result, we’ve developed motorcycle insurance products specifically to deal with the uniqueness of Trikes. But putting business aside for a moment, let’s look at Trikes – could these 3-wheel wonders become the new “biker” standard in the future?

Unique Handling Characteristics:
Trikes offer unique handling characteristics and require special skills and knowledge to operate properly and safely. These are heavy motorcycles weighing well in excess of 800 pounds for starters. Then, God help you if you do not have reverse gear as man-handling these big machines is no small feat. That said, the new models are well engineered to handle the loads generated by the steering forces and weight of their 3-wheeled platforms. I am amazed just how well modern Trikes handle. The steering control is near perfect on most of today’s Trikes.

The Popular Brands Out There:
For years, the best name in Trikes, in my humble opinion, was Leahman Trikes. Their facility in Spearfish, South Dakota, puts out a great product using a variety of engines and models. Their “No Lean” design offers a very solid swingarm which minimizes sway and rolling to the outside in corners. Very good handling Trikes from Lehman.

Of course, you can’t ignore the investment being made in Trikes by Harley-Davidson. From all we have heard, their Tri-Glide Ultra Classic has been a retail superstar in an otherwise tough several years for motorcycle sales. The Motor Company introduced their Trikes in 2009 with the Tri Glides. Very nice bikes with a new chassis designed for the 3-wheel application. As is typical with Harleys, these are cool looking machines.

Then there are the nice people at Honda. Gotta say the Honda Goldwing Trike may well be the best touring motorcycle ever built. No matter your motorcycle brand preferance, it is hard to argue against the Goldwing being one of the best motorcycles of all time.

Recently, we’ve were exposed to the new front-wheel Trikes coming out of CAN-AM, the famous Bombadier brand our of Quebec, Canada. These are different machines indeed. The automotive-inspired technology of the 2-front wheels, Y-shaped stance makes control and stabiliy very natural so handling these new machines is easy. The CAN-AM 3-wheelers feels more like a convertible sports car rather than a motorcycle. It is difficult to compare the CAN-AMs to anything else on the road. They are truly unique Trikes and if our insurance sales are any indication, these Y-shaped, 2+1 wheeled vehicles are on a sales roll at dealerships. Check ’em out at http://en-us.spyder.brp.com/Home.aspx

The Bottom Line:
Trikes are expensive retailing around the $30,000 range on the best of days. We are talking major investment here folks. Whether you tour around this great country of ours or simply enjoy local runs to the grocery store, you need special Trike insurance on that 3-wheeler that will protect you properly while at the same time, not bust open your bank account.

The Crew at Bikernet Insurance has developed a special Trike Insurance Program that is the best in the business. The program offers Replacement Cost on new Trikes, Rental Reimbursement, Optional Equipment Coverage ($5,000 is “free”), cost-effective Medical Payments coverage, low-deductible Collision and Comprehensive coverage, and much more. Plus, we’ve put together an amazing array of discounts that could save you up to a whopping 70% on your Trike insurance. If you own a Trike, you don’t want to leave your driveway without calling the friendly biker agents at Bikernet.

Remember, you are not just a policy number with us. We Care About You.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME PLACE 2ND AT WAUSEON VINTAGE ½-MILE RACES–For decades now, the Antique Motorcycle Club of America has been holding dirt track races at various meets around the country, attracting hundreds of bikes dating back to the early days of American motorcycle racing. For the last several years, both Wauseon, Ohio and Davenport, Iowa have been the venues of choice, as the associated meets those weekends are two of the biggest old motorcycle meets in the world. This year, the crowd at the Wauseon National meet, held July 15-17th, got to witness another night of great racing.

One of the highlights of the weekend is the racing of the Board Track class on Friday night. The “skinny wheel” bikes are always a crowd favorite, and this year, a total of thirteen riders brought out machines to make a few hot laps and give the crowd a show.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching Dale and his friends have put these old bikes to use, having the time of their lives. So last winter, I decided to start putting together something of my own to make a few laps with the group.

The entire build came down to the wire…… we finished the bike exactly one day before we left for Wauseon on Wednesday. We only had time for a few start-ups, and although the bike seemed to be running well, we didn’t have any time at all to get it out on the road to tune and test it. Despite the lack of practice, we loaded her up anyway and headed for the meet.

WHOA, WE’RE GETTING READY TO ROCK TO BENNETT’S PERFORMANCE THEN STURGIS–I actually made serious headway yesterday. We blasted all the paint off the front of the building, then I posted the Mr. Lucky shorty muffler tech, and while sipping Jack Daniels in the evening started to write the next episode (61) of the Cantina series.

What a fuckin’ day. And today ain’t any different. This week I may hit the Victory article, and attempt a shot at a Mudflap update before we peel to the Badlands. Keep your fingers crossed. We hope to work on the XS and my son’s Mudflap girl FXR on Wednesday. We’ll see.

Ride Forever,
