Hey,
I’m spacing today. We are going to whip out the Sunday Post and dive back into the shop for more bike building mania. Ray C. Wheeler, the Bikernet V.P. of Cantina Membership Services, and I attended a 70th Birthday of an old friend, Urban Hirsch in Beverly Hills last night.
I swear, I didn’t drink much Jack Daniels, but I’m having a problem coming around today. I’m going to jump straight into the Post and add more titillating info as it floats to the surface–if it does.
I’ll let Art Hall’s shots of one of the best bikes at the Born free keep you busy, while I splash water in my hazy mug.
Grip Ace– Grip Ace is a unique idea whose time has definitely come! Get rid of those handlebar mounted switches and clean up that whole mess! Make the entire wiring process easier and cheaper! The Grip Ace switch module is imbedded directly into the grip, putting all your switch controls for programmable self cancelling turn signals, horn, hi/lo beam and starting at your finger tips!
We are going to install one of these puppies on my son’s Mudflap girl FXR. Hang on for the tech.
Rivera Primo has done it again by combining the tasteful cosmetics of the ART grips with the brilliance of the Grip Ace Switch system. A absolute home run!!
The Grip Ace switch system is fully micro-processor controlled so that the wiring process is almost completely “plug & play”.
The Grip Ace Switch Module is encapsulated making it weatherproof and goof proof!!

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY PHD PROGRAM INFO–** Your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is attached at only one end
** If you stop getting thirsty, you need to drink more water. When a human body is dehydrated, its thirst mechanism shuts off. (Now that is interesting!)

BIKERNET RECIPE OF THE WEEK–Pay attention:
Fettuccine Alfredo
Ingredients
10 ounces fettuccini pasta
1/2 cup butter
5 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup heavy cream
1 egg yolk
2 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons dried parsley
Directions
1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add fettucine pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
2. In a large skillet melt the butter and add the chopped garlic. Cook on low for about 5 minutes, stirring often, making sure not to burn the garlic.
3. Pour about a 1/4 cup of the heavy cream into a small bowl. Add the egg yolk and beat together; put aside. Pour the remaining cream into the frying pan. Increase the heat to medium-high. As the cream starts to boil, mix rapidly using a whisk. Slowly add the cream/egg mixture. You do not want the egg to curdle. Continue whisking until well blended.
4. Add 1 cup of the Parmesan cheese and continue to mix the cream. Pour in the remaining Parmesan and the parsley, mix until smooth. Immediately remove from stove. Serve over cooked pasta.

Harley-Davidson Roars Into Goodwood Festival of Speed —Two of the biggest names in motoring met as Harley-Davidson brought over 100 years of motorcycling heritage to the home of Lord March at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, United Kingdom in early July. Harley-Davidson Museum Vice President Bill Davidson, the great-grandson of one of the original founders, visited the festival for the first time to meet with Harley-Davidson customers and motor sport fans at one of the biggest automotive festivals in the world.
This year, Harley-Davidson increased its presence at Goodwood, traditionally home to automobiles, as classic motorcycles from Harley-Davidson’s past such as a 1928 model Peashooter and a 1914 Silent Grey Fellow were displayed alongside models from the current 2011 range, including the new Blackline and V-Rod Muscle.
Davidson, riding a Harley-Davidson Street Glide, led a group of riders through the English countryside, turning the heads of car and motorcycle fans alike. Formula One racing driver and Harley owner Jenson Button met with Davidson in the driver’s enclosure, taking the opportunity to talk about his other passion prior to focusing on the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
One of the Festival of Speeds principle attractions is the ride up the legendary Goodwood hill, which sees famous names from racing’s past and present on both cars and motorcycles speeding up the 1.16-mile course in the grounds of Goodwood. Some of the iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycles to take part this year included the 1978 XLCR Café Racer and a 2011 XR1200X Trophy Series racing motorcycle.
“It’s great to see the passion of bike fans enjoying this unique event,” Davidson said. “Seeing fans of all ages lining up to sit on our motorcycles makes us extremely proud at the Motor Company. This is my first visit to The Goodwood Festival of Speed and it has been a phenomenal experience.”
MORE RARE MOTORCYCLES ADDED TO QUAIL LODGE SALE– 8 July 2011 – San Francisco – Following the recent news that reverberated around the world of Bonhams offering the ultra-rare 1954 AJS E95 “Porcupine” factory racer at auction, the 218-year old firm is announcing the addition of other rare motorcycles to its August sale.
The very last Brough Superior SS100 to roll off the production line has now been added to the list. Considered one of the greatest motorcycles ever made, and famous for consistently being the most coveted and valuable sold at auction, the SS100 was the flagship model of the bespoke English Brough Superior brand.* This exclusive 1940 example – the last to come with full factory records – is a gem of historical significance as it represents the final chapter of one of the world’s most legendary machines. It carries an estimate of $350,000-$400,000.
A pair of British Coventry-Eagle Flying-8 motorcycles, a 1925 SV and a 1928 OHV, has been consigned from a collection in England. Both uncommon and highly sought-after, the Flying-8 model was regarded as one of the most attractive –and most expensive– motorcycles of its time. The latter machine, one of very few known to exist, was considered a superbike of the 1920s and was a worthy rival of Brough Superior and a formidable Brooklands racer. Rarely seen on the open market, these elegant, hand-built speed machines are estimated at $100,000 and $250,000, respectively.
Yet another legendary British motorcycle marque, Vincent, will be represented by the utterly unique Black Prince model. Described by its creator Phil Vincent as a “two-wheeled Bentley,” this enclosed motorcycle was truly ahead of its time and a real performance machine, even if opinion of its avant-garde styling was mixed. The 1955 Vincent Black Prince carries an estimate of $120,000-$140,000.
Additionally, a highly desirable American 1928 Henderson Deluxe Four, originally sold to South Africa, will be on offer with an estimate of $60,000-$70,000.
These and other exceptional motorcycles and motorcars will be auctioned at Bonhams’ 14th annual sale at Quail Lodge in Carmel, California, on Thursday and Friday, August 18-19. As this is the first time a dedicated live auction of motorcycles will be held during the 60+ years of the famed Pebble Beach Car Week, the opportunities for sellers are unprecedented. Owners interested in consigning highly unique motorcycles to this anticipated event may call 415-391-4000 or e-mail one of the following Bonhams motorcycle specialists:
• Ben Walker, International Director of Motorcycles, London: ben.walker@bonhams.com
• Nick Smith, US Director of Motorcycles, Los Angeles: nick.smith@bonhams.com

BIKERNET AUTO SERVICE CENTER–An Eskimo was having problems with his car, so he decided to take it to a mechanic.
After examining the engine, the mechanic reported the problem. “Looks like you blew a seal,” the mechanic told the Eskimo.
“Nope,” said the Eskimo, “that’s just frost in my mustache.”

GOALS FOR THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE SMOKE OUT LONG ROAD RIDERS–For example, I thought it would be great to have a “Long Road Lounge” only for people that have completed the Long Road or the Stampede. I had this vision of used, overstuffed, furniture from Good Will under a couple tents, a cooler full of something good to drink, some crazy crap like a few scantily dressed mannequins and a couple pink flamingoes. A midget bouncer to keep the uninitiated out would seal the deal. I talked to four or five groups this year and they managed a small tent and one couch, but if that is all the buy in we get then we are cooked.
We need people, or better yet, groups willing to have skin in the game. I’ll coordinate but it will take members of the Legion to take this to the next level or it will just end. We have a future if I get e-mails like, “Edge, I ride with some guys near the stop in Where-Ever-Podunk, GA and we have this great idea to XXX. We can put it together and put out a tip jar there to help cover it.”

LONG ROAD STORY COMING TO THE HORSE NEAR YOU–I’ll get this Long Road story back to you later today. Just got back from a camping/fishing trip up in the Rampart Range. Didn’t get any fish, but did a bit of hiking, saw some beautiful mountain scenery, and tried out a new tent.

With the trend of plastic, 23″-30″ front wheels and a lot of expensive bolt-on parts what ever happened to “Less is more”? Your 03 Road King Classic is a fine example of what I mean.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OPEN ON SUNDAY WITH ANOTHER QUIRKY WORD–skylark SKAHY-lahrk, verb:
1. To frolic; sport.
noun:
1. A brown-speckled European lark, Alauda arvensis, famed for its melodious song.
“I know it Mr. Dennett, them young fellows will skylark, in my opinion the best thing for them is a little touch on the head with a marlin spike.”
— Charles W. Dennett, “The Management of Mills,” Transactions of the New England Cotton Manufacturers’ Association, Volume 73
There were the times when we went along for a week and did not do a tap but eat, sleep, stand a trick at the wheel, a watch to the masthead, and skylark around the deck, and read, or have a quiet game of draw or whist or seven-up below.
— James Brendan Connolly, The seiners
Skylark as a verb is nautical in origin, recorded from 1809, in reference to “wanton play about the rigging, and tops.”

BIKERNET TRIBUTE TO JOE MONDELLO– This is a late report. We have lost another great innovator, Joe Mondello, R.I.P.

I’ve also included a PDF tech article that Joe did on porting Harley heads. Lots of real good info. here.
The legacy of Joe Mondello continues on!! http://www.mondello.com/ You can still get his porting products, which I highly recommend. At Joe’s place they have a excellent
staff!!

It’s still a mess and they don’t have all the parts, so I’m thinking it could be aninteresting tease, “Will they make it on time.” I just left there (still sweating my ass off since. It was 101 in the shade and the black top is smoking) and plan to go back tomorrow to shoot the welding they have planned for the cool morning hours.

Jim Craig of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, built this Harley-Davidson Road King replica cardboard boat in his garage to compete in the Glen Ellyn Cardboard Boat Regatta July 4. The 21-foot-long boat, constructed entirely of cardboard, stands 9-feet tall, weighs about 200 pounds (1,500 pounds with eight-man crew), took over 200 hours to build, and contains about 12 gallons of wood glue. The project was a resounding success, as Jim and crew won the Fastest Time and Best in Show awards at the Glen Ellyn Cardboard Boat Regatta.
“I named our boat ‘Made in USA’ since Harley-Davidson is a great American brand,” Jim said. “The boat was a big hit, a recognizable motorcycle to many of the 4,000 people who came to the regatta.”
Here’s a link to a video of the boat in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHpgwywKmjM

Texas shop TWISTED CUSTOM CYCLES plans to open second location–A Texas custom shop has won preliminary city approval to open a second location at a vacant gas station in Seabrook.
Twisted Custom Cycles owner Jason Olson says he is submitting a landscaping plan and hopes to open the second location Aug. 12. The City Council is requiring Olson to conduct exhaust testing indoors only and provide a safe entry and exit from and to an adjacent highway. The council is expected to make a final decision on Olson’s conditional use permit July 19.
“We’re not going to be building bikes there; we’ll just be doing services, dynos, tune-ups, parts, helmets, chrome — things of that nature,” he told the Bay Area Citizen.
Olson’s first Twisted Custom Cycles shop is in Alvin.

On Monday, June 27, Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) riders from more than 70 countries rode together to log 4,376,470 riding miles during the club’s annual Million Mile Monday ride. Established as an event in 2008, this year marks the third consecutive year that members of H.O.G., the Official Riding Club of Harley-Davidson Motor Company, surpassed the 4 million mile milestone.
Many rides were organized by H.O.G.’s 1,400 worldwide chapters, including a ride organized by members of the New York Stock Exchange that was featured on Fox Business News.

BACK TO THE SHOP–Next week we need to plan for our Sturgis blast. We may attempt to hook up with 100 Hamsters as they ride from the west coast to the Badlands. Barry Cooney made the arrangement this year.
We’re punking out as we have Jeff’s trailer serviced and the Bikernet Hearse shocks changed for the run with the Sturgis Chop and the Salt Shaker for Ray C. Wheeler to ride.
I’ll work on another Mudflap girl report, Tom Fosters Bike feature, another Betsy report, and perhaps the second chapter of our XS build. Plus we have some new fiction. We are waiting on another Jerry Southworth Girl of Bikernet, and another chapter of World Run is waiting in the wings. Never a dull moment.
Ride Forever,
