SUNDAY DAD’S DAY, A TRIBUTE, BALTIMORE SURVELLIANCE, H-D FLAME JOBS, PROJECT BIKES AND WAR TALES

cutie on bike - rfr lead

Happy Father’s Day goddamnit. If you’re a father, stick with it. I mentioned, in the last Cantina drama, that it’s okay to ditch a bad ol’ lady as long as kids are not involved. Then you’re stuck, because, together, you’ve introduced a new life into the world and you need to be there, helping, nuturing and teaching kids. It’s tough enough to raise kids on two incomes, but imagine just one. I see it all the time.

I’m a bastard, been married five times. Never owned up to those marriage vows. It’s a fuckin’ contract. If you’re going to stick you neck in the noose, ya gotta hang, especially if Kids are involved. I went to my grandsons graduation the other day, because his father is missing in action. Mari, my daughter-in-law, is saddled with raising three youngsters on her own. No child support from dad, no support whatsoever. But she smiles constantly and so do the kids. Little Frankie is an aspiring athelete, his sister smart as a whip and the little energized Olivia is about to start school. I sat with three moms and seven kids for brunch, and they all smiled, had a blast running around the restaurant, but there were no dads around. That’s bad news.

Sure, we’re unrelenting bastards some of the time, but we need to be there for the kids. Let’s hit the news:

Just Another Night In Texas

Here are a few images from last night. The cute blond is the young lady scheduled for my studio next week. I resent Shaun too. I did not realize I had attached the dark one. I have another one at home of her on his bike from last week.

I sat on a rock in the corner and took the a lot of the ones during the day with the new lens. I wanted to get a feel for it before the Smoke Out next week.

?Bob?s Back with David Mann, Old School biking returns to the Journey Museum?, August 7-14, 2004, Rapid City, SD

The roots of custom motorcycling inspired this exhibition which Michael has produced for the Journey Museum. He has assembled more than a dozen ?Bobber? style bikes, which reflect a style of motorcycle in the 1950?s and early 1960?s, to accompany a retrospective display of original paintings by David Mann, the artist who chronicled the motorcycle culture from the 1960?s through recent times. This is the 4th consecutive year that Michael has produced a motorcycle theme show for the Journey Museum (although he is not including his own photography in the display this year) and again, Tuesday will be the BIG day. For the second year, Metzeler Tires will be sponsoring an all-day ride in show, which will be followed by an open to the public reception from 4:30-8:30pm. Even though Michael will not be exhibiting his own work in the museum this year, as the producer of the show, he will be at Tuesday?s reception.

This show has been made possible through the support of Metzeler Tires, Segal Fine Art (who represents David Mann & his new series of limited edition prints) and Joe Teresi (who loaned David?s originals for the show) and bike builders/owners including Billy Lane, Hank Young, Chica, David Edwards (Cycle World Editor,) Brian Klock, sculptor Jeff Decker, Jose de Miguel (from Puerto Rico), Brent Mayfield and Shane Bender.

Iraq WAR facts

This is probably from the far RIGHT, to combat those on the LEFT….I guess you can spin it anyway you want….However, I don’t think you would find this on page one of the New York Times.

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of January….. In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.

That’s just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq. When some claim President Bush shouldn’t have started this war, state the following ….

FDR… led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman… finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy… Started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson… turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton… went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden’s head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions. In the two years since terrorists attacked us

President Bush has … Liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but… It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.

We’ve been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Yard Sale Sunday

I was taking a walk when I passed by the nursing home where there were six old ladies lying naked on the front lawn. I thought this was a little peculiar, but continued on my way because it’s a long walk and I wanted to get it over with before it got truly hot again today.

On my way back, the ladies were still lying in the yard. To quench my curiosity, I went inside and asked to speak to the director of the facility. When I asked him if he knew there were 6 naked old ladies lying on his front lawn, he replied, “Yes, I know. They’re all retired prostitutes.”

“Okay…” I said rather disbelievingly, “… And?”

“And they’re having a yard sale!”

Project Shovelhead

Thought I would send a pic of my project Shovel. It’s a 66 motor in a Paughco frame with a ’91 H-D springer. The motor has 48,000 miles and has never been into. I’m the third owner of this mill. It was parked in ’87 and the rest of the bike parted out. I’m now fianancilly ready to rebuild the motor. I’m leaning toward the S&S 84″ kit so the bottom end will be good to go without the services of an experienced flywheel rebuilder. I’m not sure what to do with the top end.

Janklow’s Deposition

On August 16th, Bill Janklow was involved in an accident that killed Randy Scott of Hardwick Minnesota. A jury found Janklow guilty of second-degree manslaughter in December. After that, Scott’s family filed a civil lawsuit against Janklow that they want to be heard in a state court. But, the federal government says because Janklow was on official business at the time of the crash, the lawsuit should be in federal court. To sort it out, Janklow and his chief of staff Chris Braendlin gave depositions on May 28th detailing what led up to that crash. We now have our first look at what was said behind closed doors.

If the lawsuit filed by Randy Scott’s family stays in federal court, the government and the taxpayers will pay. If it goes back to a state court, Janklow himself will pay the damages.

In a deposition, Janklow testified under oath that he was on his way home to Brandon from an event in Aberdeen on August 16th. He says he turned off I-29 because that route puts on him a county road that takes him within a couple miles of his house. He also said he turned off the interstate because he was going to stop and say hi to his mom because that’s what he always did. But Janklow doesn’t remember if he stopped by her house that day.

His aide Chris Braendlin testified in his deposition that they drove right by it. Braendlin also said that even though he slept most of the trip, the two did not make any personal stops after leaving Aberdeen.

Janklow testified that he wasn’t in a hurry to get home that day. And although he took that route often, he wasn’t sure of the speed limit on the road where he collided with Scott.

The lawyer for the Scott family disagrees with Janklow’s testimony. Ron Meshbesher says Janklow did stop at his mother’s house on August 16th and that means Janklow was not on duty at the time of the accident. A federal magistrate will now decide whether the case stays in federal court or is moved back to state court.

Newsflash!!!! U.S. May Follow California on Car Emissions

The EPA wrote the “Motorcycle Emissions” law using the C.A.R.B. template. CA will being implementing the new EPA motorcycle standards in 2004, while the rest of the country won’t start until 2006. In 2006, there WILL be a review of what happened in CA from 04-06. We NEED to be ready to beat the shit out this.

We need to get all the mom and pop shops and small manufacturers on the same page. The MRF is making great strides in this department (which I’ll elaborate on in my report) – but the lions share of the work cannot be done by a handful of people – the whole biker community in this nation need to get out there and spread the word or we’ll all end up riding mopeds in OUR lifetimes!!!

Ex-felons Fight To Have Voting Rights Reinstated

DAYTONA BEACH — Mel Roberts could be anyone’s neighbor. He lives in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. He’s got a wife, cute kids, a college degree. He runs his own business, pays his taxes, and occasionally referees high school volleyball games.

But come November, when other citizens go to the polls, Roberts, 44, will only be able to look on with interest — and envy.

“I’m an American,” says the Ormond Beach landscaper. “I want the right to vote. I’m very passionate about it.”

He doesn’t have it because he was convicted of a crime 11 years ago — possessing a small amount of cocaine — and because he lives in Florida, one of seven states in the nation that impose permanent voting bans on felons. Regaining the right to vote here is possible, but it involves a difficult bureaucratic process that can take years.

Proponents of the status quo say that’s as it should be, because voting is a privilege that shouldn’t be extended to those who’ve broken the law.

Advocates for change counter that it continues to punish people long after they’ve served their sentences.

Currently, Florida has nearly 600,000 disenfranchised felons like Roberts, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is working to change the law along with a few state legislators, the League of Women Voters, NAACP and several other groups.

Today’s thought is:

Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose. –Lyndon B. Johnson

We can cherish our yesterdays or even regret them, but we can never live them again. The past is behind us; the future lies ahead. We may sometimes be saddened by the thought that the future might be shorter than our past, but we find comfort in remembering that the future is real and promising; the past is neither.

To find only positives in the past and negatives in the future robs us of one of our greatest gifts — time. And time is what the past can’t give us. Yesterday’s gifts to us are memories, and an occasional backward glance to what once was is natural. But we grow mentally and spiritually by living in this day and planning for tomorrow.

I accept the gifts of yesterday’s memories, today’s reality, and tomorrow’s dreams.

Double Charging Taxpayers

Members of Congress are now attempting to reconcile differences between House and Senate versions of the highway-funding bill. The Senate version of the bill would allow tolls to be placed on existing Interstate Highways, thus “double-charging” taxpayers for roads that have already been paid for by motorists. The House version of the bill limits tolling on Interstates to the construction of new lanes, and the tolls must be removed once construction and maintenance costs have been covered. Taxpayers must act now to make sure the House’s provision prevails.

You can take action on this alert either via email (please see directions below) or via the web at: http://ga1.org/campaign/highway_tolls/wwbkx722inxt5

MILWAUKEE WORLD FESTIVAL BOARD, OUTLAWS MOTORCYCLE CLUB ANNOUNCE TEMPORARY AGREEMENT

Motorcycle club’s lawsuit to be delayed: MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee World Festival Board of Directors and Michael F. Hupy, the attorney for three Outlaws Motorcycle Club members who filed a lawsuit against the organization, today announced an agreement to temporarily stay the case. As part of the agreement, the club members will delay litigation while Milwaukee World Festival implements an informal policy that individuals will not be removed from Summerfest solely for wearing Outlaws apparel. The policy will remain in effect until October, when both sides will review the matter. Festival security retains the right to eject any attendee – regardless of their clothing – for disruptive behavior or conduct.

The three Outlaws members allege in their lawsuit that they were unfairly ejected from the last year’s Summerfest for refusing to remove or cover apparel with the club symbol. Mr. Hupy said: “This is a fair agreement for both sides. The Outlaws have the freedom to wear their club logo. Milwaukee World Festival maintains the ability to enforce its security policies and help ensure a safe festival. It’s a win-win situation.” Hupy noted that he did not charge a fee to his clients and worked on this matter on a pro bono basis.

Howard Schnoll, president of Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., said his board is comfortable with the arrangement.

“This is a workable agreement, and our Board is willing to put it in place on a trial basis for this year’s Summerfest,” he said. “Our goal is to create safe and fun events that all festival goers can enjoy, and this agreement will allow us to do that.”

If, after the 2004 festival season, The Outlaws and Milwaukee World Festival are both willing to continue the informal policy into the future, the agreement calls for the lawsuit to be dropped.

Baltimore Under Constant Surveillance

From the Inner Harbor to the Bay Bridge, local and state homeland security authorities are beginning to build a regional network of 24-hour surveillance cameras that will first go live this summer in Baltimore.

The closed-circuit video surveillance system of public spaces will begin in the Inner Harbor by summer’s end, and a $2 million federal grant accepted by the city yesterday will expand the cameras into downtown’s west side by early November.

“We’re trying to build a regional network of cameras,” said Dennis R. Schrader, director of homeland security for Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

What of privacy concerns raised by groups opposed to cameras constantly monitored by retired police officers or college students?

“We’re at war,” Schrader said.

The network is part of a comprehensive strategy in the Baltimore area to spend $25 million in homeland security grants this year and next to improve regional cooperation on terrorism concerns. The idea stemmed from a regional group of leaders that is jointly acquiring decontamination equipment and backups for 911 and power systems.

The network of cameras will be placed in downtown’s west side because it has light rail and Amtrak lines, federal and state government buildings, and many cultural institutions.

At a surveillance center in the Atrium Building on Howard Street, 13 to 15 retired police officers or criminal justice college students will monitor images, said Elliot Schlanger, Baltimore’s chief information officer.
