CHOPPERS ONLY SUNDAY POST–BACK FROM HAWAII AND MONSTER GARAGE

monster garage group
Here’s the MG bike building crew (from left to right), John Reed, historic CCI designer, Marc Rowe, Rowe Engineering frame builder, Don Hotop, famous master builder, Carl Morrow, legendary performance expert of Carl’s Speed shop, and me, shop clean-up crew.

It’s a hot LA Sunday and we just rolled in from the Choppers Only show in Hawaii. The show was packed with celebs from Fonda to Indian Larry, Paul Cox and Billy Lane. Helluva week. That and the Monster Garage bit and I’m still recuperating. Let’s hit the news:

Bikernet Sleeping Habits Study

According to a new article in ‘Cosmopolitan’ magazine, they say the position you sleep in says a lot about you.

They say women who sleep on their sides are sensitive, women who sleep on their stomachs are competent, and women who sleep on their backs with their ankles behind their ears are very popular.

Hey, What About David Mann Prints

Before I part with my hard earned cash for one of these Dave Mann prints, I wondered if you knew if Dave will profit from these sales or is good ole EasyRider screwing him, again.

If Dave dont get a % then I don’t buy, simple really.

Ferryman

This is the first time in Dave’s artistic history that his work is being recognized and reprinted with the care and quality it deserves. And the Segal people take good care of all of their artist. Yes, he gets a serious percentage.–Bandit

Margarita Night

The other night I was invited out for a night with “the girls.” I told my husband that I would be home by midnight, “I promise!”

Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easy. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed three times. Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution (even when totally smashed), in order to escape a possible conflict with him.

The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, and I told him “Midnight”. He didn’t seem pissed off at all. Whew! Got away with that one! Then he said, “We need a new cuckoo clock.”

When I asked him why, he said, “Well, last night our clock cucko-oed three times, then said, “Oh shit.”, cuckooed 4 more times, cleared it’s throat, cuckooed another 3 times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and farted.”

BIKERNET MEDICAL STUDY

A MAN IS LYING IN BED IN THE HOSPITAL WITH AN OXYGEN MASK OVER HIS MOUTH. A YOUNG NURSE APPEARS TO SPONGE HIS HANDS AND FEET. “NURSE”, HE MUMBLES FROM BEHIND THE MASK, “ARE MY TESTICLES BLACK?”

EMBARRASSED, THE YOUNG NURSE REPLIES, “I DON’T KNOW, I’M ONLY HERE TO WASH YOUR HANDS AND FEET.”

HE STRUGGLES AGAIN TO ASK, “NURSE, ARE MY TESTICLES BLACK?”

FINALLY, SHE PULLS BACK THE COVERS, RAISES HIS GOWN, HOLDS HIS PENIS IN ONE HAND AND HIS TESTICLES IN HER OTHER HAND AND TAKES A CLOSE LOOK, AND SAYS, “THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM!”

FINALLY, THE MAN PULLS OFF HIS OXYGEN MASK AND REPLIES, “THAT WAS VERY NICE BUT, ARE… MY… TEST…RESULTS… BACK???”

HOUSE APPROVES GEIST’S BILL STIFFENING PENALTIES FOR CARELESS DRIVING OFFENSES THAT KILL OR SERIOUSLY INJURE OTHERS–Right of way laws at last.

The House overwhelmingly approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Rick Geist (R-Altoona) that would significantly increase the penalties for a Careless Driving conviction when that offense results in the death or serious injury of another person.

HB-873 would establish an increased fine of $500 and a six- month license suspension for persons convicted of Careless Driving when the offender unintentionally causes the death of another person.

Careless Driving offenses that result in serious bodily injury to another person would carry a $250 fine and a three-month license suspension.

Under current state law, a conviction of Careless Driving results only in a fine of $25 plus costs and fees, as well as three points on the person’s driving record. No further penalties currently exist if a death or serious injury occurs as a result of the violation.

“If a tragedy occurs because of a driver’s careless actions, even though those actions were unintentional, then there should be serious consequences,” said Geist, who chairs the House Transportation Committee. “We have to reinforce the notion that drivers must be alert and responsible behind the wheel. Tragic things can happen in an instant if you aren’t.”

Geist credited Blair County District Attorney Dave Gorman with being a major proponent of this issue and working closely with him to advance the legislation.

HB-873 now goes to the Senate for consideration after a 202-1 vote in the House.

West Virginia Motorcycle Skills Test Training

ABATE of WV Kanawha Valley Chapter’s Motorcycle Skills Test Training-A Pilot Program is a very important program. I tip my hat to Timmy & Duck for their foresight. It doesn’t take the place of the Safety Program, which is so vital, but it will give the folks who are on the waiting list for a class the chance to ride safer. I had the opportunity to be at one of the practice’s in Charleston a couple of weeks ago. Folks, its not as easy as it looks. I am a proud graduate of the MSF’s Motorcycle Rider Training Program & top scorer at 97%. So, I’m thinking I can ace these turns. Wrong. As riders, we must be concerned about people buying their new bikes & hitting the road without any training whatsoever. Our lives are at stake, not just theirs.

Ride To Work Day

In keeping with tradition, the third Wednesday of July will be the thirteenth annual Ride to Work Day in the United States (July 21st). The day is designed to provide a practical demonstration that motorcycles are an effective, economical and eco-friendly means of transportation that reduce demand for parking spaces, and ease congestion.

With the lighter weight, maneuvrability and lower consumption of resources the whole of society benefits from the greater use of two-wheeled transport.

The overall figures of how America gets to work make for awesome reading:

Around 80 million commuting journeys are made in the US every day, mainly by car and light truck.

Of that total, approximately 200,000 are ridden by motorcycle.

The Ride to Work organisation wishes to see the balance shift considerably.

Wherever possible, July 21st is the day when motorcycle owners should use their bikes to get to work.

There are seven million motorcycles registered for road use so the figure above represents less than three per cent usage.

It started as an American movement, but since its inception, Ride to Work Day has also been embraced by riders in the United Kingdom, Germany, Israel and The Philippines, as well as many other countries.

It has been estimated that on Ride to Work Day in 2003 triple the regular number of riders appeared on US roads.

Wednesday, July 21st, 2004 – the organisers are hoping that the movement’s growth is set to continue.

One Man’s Project

Everyone like to see their stuff out there so here’s mine. Building it (it’s a project, okay) in a “garage” with no electricity, few “contacts”, just some good friends and an attitude.

It’s been in the works for over a year. It takes time to buy shit and figure out how to get around problems that come up. Like your landlord moving back to Cali and giving you a month to move all the shit you gathered for 6 or 7 years. I know, no crying.

bike frame - Rebel

Started as a 2000 Buell M2. Liked the power, hated the sitting position and seat height. Solution an Atlas frame and some other goodies bought originally to fix a dent or two in a Sporty I traded in on the Buell.

It’s been fun so far and the light is dimly seen in the distance. I even “rode” it around the parking lot last weekend. Get a running start and then jump on, until it slows to a stop. Oh ya, remember to put feet down.

rebek bike 2

This just shows that you CAN build something cool with little money and a plan. Use what’s good and change the rest. Hope to be riding it to the next Bike Show. Is it too early to reserve a spot on the grass?

Hollister Happened

THE Independence Day Rally in Hollister, California, went ahead as scheduled over the weekend of July 3rd-4th. Earlier in 2004 the event looked to be in serious difficulties over security. It seemed that nobody was prepared to pay for the additional Police officers that the Council insisted were necessary for the Rally to run safely. With a matter of weeks to go before Independence Day, a compromise solution was finally worked out. The Rally organisers would impose a modest parking charge for rally-goers and the income generated would enable them to meet their commitments.

marlon - bob t.

In a bizarre twist, the death of Marlon Brando was announced as the Rally began on July 2nd. It was Brando’s portrayal of Johnny, in ‘The Wild One’, that now rates as one of his most memorable performances. The film was based on an incident in Hollister some years before that has become part of American motorcycling legend and is inextricably linked with the city. A local company rushed out a limited-edition Marlon Brando memorial T-shirt and this was quickly sold out over the weekend.

The modern Independence Day Rally has become a showcase for changed attitudes to motorcycles and those who ride them. The event is now in its eighth year, firmly established and well-received. Its popularity is hard to gauge. It is generally agreed that the figure is in excess of 50,000 and could even be twice that.

News from Muscarella’s

MUSCARELLA’S has been supplying braided lines to the market for over twenty years. The company is based in the Sierra Mountain foothills in northern California. The company offers a wide range of oil and brake lines and these are supplied to dealers across the USA. In addition to the stock of complete lines, there is a stock of numerous fittings available in imperial and metric sizes and these should cover just about any application. There are a number of finish options for the braided lines.

As well as the stainless steel stock finish they are also offered in a range of colors, applied to the braid by powdercoating. Muscarella’s also offers a custom service, making lines for custom or non-stock applications. These services are all detailed on Muscarella’s new web site (details below).

Recently, the company has been involved with the Garland Appeal and the ‘1 in 8’ series of motorcycle events focussing on breast cancer. Muscarella’s has supplied the braided lines for the bike currently being built by Marc Rowe at Rowe Machine. This will eventually become the top prize in a raffle to be held for the charity.

Bikernet Government Relations

After retiring, I went to the social security office to apply for Social Security, the woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s license to verify my age.

I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry but I seemed to have left my wallet at Home. “I will have to go home and come back later.”

The woman says, “Unbutton your shirt.” So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She says, “That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me” and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the social security office. She says, “You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.”

Bikers Praise Government Officials on Safety Effort

BOSTON MA.- In the wake of the biggest Laconia Bike Week ever; the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) would like to express its sincere thanks to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, the Mass Highway Department and MOTORIST, for their diligent efforts with their “CHECK-TWICE” safety and awareness campaign during Bike Week; which resulted in there being no injuries or fatalities on Massachusetts roadways.

“It is estimated that over 400,000 people participated in Bike Week in one fashion or another, and that a number of those people traveled through Massachusetts to the New Hampshire festivities.”said Betsy Lister the MMA’s Safety Education and Awareness Director.

“The Amber Alert signs, warning motorists to Check Twice-Save A Life, watch for motorcycles while changing lanes; were placed on all major roadways in the Commonwealth; to include Rtes 1, 93, 95, 495, and the Mass Pike.” Lister continued.” We applaud the Agencies for their attention to detail with this safety project.”

It is estimated that over 144,000 are on the road this season; and over 220,000 people have the “M” designation on their license; so “Check Twice- Save A Life” motorcycles are motor vehicles, and they’re everywhere!
