Back from Sturgis last night. It feels good to be back at the headquarters. It was a crazy year. We rode out with a terrific group of riders from Johnny White in Texas, the young gun, Glen and Kerry from Australia and Chris and Joerline from Hawaii. My Shovel broke down a couple of times and I learned that 750 XR factory racing Aluminum tanks even broke on the track. “They were throw-away tanks,” Barry Wardlaw said. “And you bolted it to a rigid?”

Yeah, who said I was smart. It made it to Deadwood where the tank broke again and the bike never lived again. I’ll tell you about my other mistake at the end of the Sunday Post. Let’s hit the news:

As the airliner pushed back from the gate, the flight attendant gave the passengers the usual information regarding seat belts, etc. Finally, she said, “Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain, Judith Campbell, and crew take you safely to your destination.”
Ed sitting in the eighth row thought to himself, “Did I hear her right? Is the captain a woman?”
When the attendants came by with the drink cart, he said “Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?”
“Yes,” said the attendant, “In fact, this entire crew is female.”
“My God,” said Ed, “I’d better have two scotch and sodas. I don’t know what to think of all those women up here in the cockpit.”
“That’s another thing sir,” said the attendant, “We no longer call it the cock pit.”
“Now it’s the Box office.”

This kind of thing coming out of NHTSA is typical and Hurts Motorcyclist. Riders need to Complain Loud and Clear to their Elected Officials. — ROGUE (Washington, DC) As most everyone in the motorcycling community knows, the state of South Dakota is currently hosting the largest motorcycle rally in the country in Sturgis. Ironically, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned the State of South Dakota has reported ZERO vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for motorcycles in its annual reports to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) each year since 1997. In fact, according to information provided to the MRF by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was absolutely no motorcycle VMT reported not only for South Dakota, but also for Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Pennsylvania or Texas from 1997-2003. Additionally, the following states have reported zero motorcycle VMT during one or more of the years from 1997-2003: Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. NHTSA releases a report each year regarding motor vehicle traffic crash fatalities and injuries based on the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Yet, with anywhere from 13 to 31% of the states each year reporting absolutely no motorcycle VMT, this highly-publicized government report uses taxpayer dollars to compare the number of fatalities for various types of vehicles to VMT in order to determine trends and publish their findings as facts. The MRF expressed serious concerns in April, 2005 regarding the preliminary 2004 FARS data released by NHTSA, citing a decline in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) during the same period when motorcycle registrations increased substantially. Based on those concerns, the MRF wrote a letter to NHTSA questioning the validity of the data upon which these statistics were gathered and reported. NHTSA’s response to the MRF states VMT data is actually collected by the FHWA and that, “NHTSA believes the VMT data collected by FHWA are the best data available . . . For the 1997 to 2003 period similar methods were in place to report the . . . data . . . Because of this, we believe these numbers are adequate for monitoring trends.” (Both letters can be viewed at The MRF translates NHTSA’s response as follows: Both the FHWA and NHTSA know the VMT data is inaccurate, but since it is collected in what they consider to be a consistent manner, the inaccuracies are acceptable. The MRF believes that simple rules of statistical research dictate a 13-31% variance is not a consistent manner that is acceptable for monitoring trends, and the MRF will be investigating the FARS data for further inaccuracies in the weeks to come. “One motorcycle fatality is too many, and the MRF remains concerned about any rise in the numbers,” stated Karen Bolin, MRF President. “The MRF is committed to working with NHTSA and the FHWA to take appropriate measures to reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities in this country. However, the MRF feels that the federal government has an obligation to report all vehicle fatality statistics in an accurate and responsible manner, and will continue to strive toward the release of more reliable information to the general public with regard to motorcycles Copies of the new, completely updated, second edition of The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Guide to MOTORCYCLING EXCELLENCE have just arrived in our warehouse. Entre (enter for the guerros) and check out the brand spanking new SuperCo Customs Website, home of the kustom hand built death traps, located in Los Angeles, Califas. Look around, you will see no one was playin’ in the sandbox when building this site. 530medialab did a fine job constructing it to reflect more than just customs, which are located “Mata Cicletas y Ranflas” section by the way. And that’s why the site has got mad style. SuperCo Customs never forgot where it came from-you’ll understand the second you pull up the home page. The way they live it is the way you watch it and hear it. If it were possible you would smell it, touch it and taste it too. SuperCo Customs, is not just about a sellout ride, it’s a way of life, it’s good times, hot chicks, it’s historia, it’s famila-headed up by El Jefe Trevelen. Actions speak louder than words on this site. SuperCo Customs has been featured in numerous magazines and not just bike mags, a music video (a shout out to The Transplants), and is overall ingrained in Los Angeles cultura.

You see Mike Sample, President of American Performance Cycle, and his crew at APC office at the performance warehouses next to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. On any given day you can smell race-fuel and hear the high-performance engines screaming around the track.
Given their location, it’s not a coincidence that APC builds high-performance choppers and cruisers. Mike Sample makes sure that he builds a quality product.
“We use quality products where fit, finish and performance are important,” said Sample. “At APC we use Roadmax transmissions because it is a good product that shifts nice and works well. We use the 6-speed Roadmax in all of our high-performance right-side drive models.”
Seven Models APC offers seven models including High Roller S, 240, 280, Wild Card 240, 280, Hustler 240 and the Spirit S. APC offers softail-style suspension on there chopper and cruiser lines. Since fabrication and painting is handled in-house, customers can order custom one-of-a-kind paint schemes, stretch, rake, accessories, wheels and controls.
Running Roadmax “We are excited to have American Performance Cycles as part of the Roadmax family,” explained Bob Kay, President of Biker Pros. “Mike Sample is building outstanding bikes as well as a company that has staying power.”
Business is heating up at APC since the beginning of the year. Since January dealership outlets have grown from 42 to 52. APC has also brought in General Electric to handle flooring for dealers. Later this year APC will clear CARB emissions with bikes being available in California.
High Performance “My background is equal parts businessman and motorhead,” explains Sample. “I’ve raced and wrenched off-shore boats and before APC I was the second top producing stockbroker in the firm. This provides me with the experience to build a firm that will be here tomorrow with a product that is outstanding in design and just about bulletproof in durability.”
Currently APC’s facility includes a “cell” production facility for the custom high-end manufacturing and an assembly line operation for its new entry-level motorcycle the “Spirit S”. In addition, this expanded facility includes a state of the art “Machine Shop” with CNC capabilities thus allowing APC to build many more of the parts it requires, while lowering cost.
Fort Worth, Texas (August 9, 2005) – Rucker Performance earned the prestigious honor of making V-Twin magazine’s Top 10 Bikes of 2005 in the July issue. The Assassin, the formidable American Muscle Bike, captured the Top 10 spot with unrivaled technology and style in the custom bike industry. “When developing the Assassin Motorcycle, we started out with a clean slate,” explained Bill Rucker, President of Rucker Performance. “Our design goal was to set a new benchmark in performance, radical looks and cutting edge materials to deliver the most integrated and best handling pro-street style American Muscle Bike in the marketplace today. We met our goals by synthesizing new materials and design ideas with proven technology.”
The heart of the Assassin is the show polished S&S Twin Cam style 124 cubic inch fuel injected motor that produces 130 horsepower and 137 ft-lbs. of torque. The VFI Tuned Induction System is a standard feature on the Assassin that allows for dual independent-tuned intake tracks. The system creates a natural “supercharging” effect and provides the greatest possible performance gains.
“Bill (Rucker) is always on the cutting edge,” said S&S President, Brett Smith. “He has vision and is not afraid of taking risks and implementing new products to position his company as a market leader.”
The rubber-mounted Assassin uses innovative technology such as the Indy-style cantilever rear suspension that completely masks the shock absorber from view and carbon fiber composite materials for weight reduction. Rucker Performance employs aerospace manufacturing techniques to uniformly assemble the uniquely designed gas tank.
To create the right custom look, Rucker uses the exclusive Roger Goldammer front end – the slickest front end around. Starting with a 120 pound solid billet block of 6061 aircraft quality aluminum, he machines and completes the pieces using only the latest 3D CNC equipment.
“One reason the Assassin was chosen as an Easyriders Top 10 motorcycle for 2005 is everyone knows that if Bill Rucker builds it, you can bet it’s a quality machine,” said Dave Nichols, Editor in Chief, Paisano Publications.
Natural talent, intelligence, a wonderful education-NONE of these guarantee success.
Something else is needed; “the sensitivity to understand what other people want and the willingness to give it to them.”
Worldly success and satisfaction of oneself depends on pleasing others. No one is going to win fame, recognition, or advancement just because he or she thinks it’s deserved.
Someone else has to think it so too.

VIOLA, WI (August 4, 2005) S&S Cycle’s first employee Floyd Baker, 62,of the Readstown area passed away Sunday July 31st. Floyd had just celebrated his 35th consecutive year at S&S. Floyd was hired by George J. Smith (founder of S&S) in 1970, more specifically on a two week probationary employment period. Some thirty odd years later Floyd would comment “my two weeks aren’t up yet.” Floyd was a Master Machinist and fabricator.
Floyd could machine just about anything, even for the most challenging tasks Floyd would sleep on it and say “miracles just take a little longer.” His can do attitude and passion for making V-Twins go fast fueled the S&S business for over 35 years. Just about every single significant project, if not every project to come out of S&S, Floyd made the prototype. He was an expert in fuel delivery systems and played a significant role in the development of all S&S carburetors. Floyd played a substantial role during all of the S&S World Record breaking Bonneville trips. Floyd made the best parts for the world’s fastest V-Twin motorcycles in the world.
During his time in Product Development Floyd would mentor the younger engineers and technicians. He always thought outside the box, coming up with new ways to fixture or design a component. He would tell people that “I’m not hampered by an education.” Although Floyd may not have been formally educated beyond high school he was one of the smartest and most knowledgeable people in the S&S Product Development department, if not the V-Twin Industry.
One of Floyd’s most passionate pastimes is farming. He operated multiple farming operations in the Readstown area. Floyd would put in a full days work at S&S and then tend to his farms. In the early years at S&S, Floyd, George Sr. and others would shut the manufacturing operations down and work the fields on the S&S Ranch. They knew it was time to start making go-fast parts again when Marge Smith (George’s wife and V-Twin expert) would pull them back down to the shop to get back to work and fill orders.
Floyd was one of the hardest working employees that S&S has ever seen, and the pace never slowed as he aged. His legacy will be forever remembered, his contributions to S&S and the V-Twin aftermarket are immeasurable, and the friends he left behind will miss him dearly. The only consolation is knowing that Floyd is back home, surrounded with more love than we can possibly imagine. Godspeed.

I RAN ACROSS THIS PICTURE THE OTHER DAY ON THE WEB AND THOUGHT IT WAS A COOL LOOKING LITTLE SPORTSTER . I WISH I COULD FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT.

THAT’S A WRAP FOR SUNDAY–I’m worn out. Oh, my other fuck-up. I ran hard copper lines, but a rubber mounted oil bag, so I constantly fought leaks. It wasn’t bad, but there’s a couple of solutions; I could toss those lines and run rubber hoses or Kent from Lucky Devil says there are vibration dampening furls.
I’ll check it next week and we’ll hit it hard with a ton of content for Bikernet, including Sturgis features from CrazyHorse, Johnny Humble, myself and Glenn Priddle. I’ll finish up the Sturgis chop build articles and run at a Cantina Soap Opera. It’ll be a hard driving week, so I’ll need more margaritas than usual.
Chris Hill from Chrome Services.com dropped off a couple of etched Jack Daniels shot glasses and a new product for the Bikernet Crew to review. They’re wide glide end caps that are cool, chromed, inset and Black powder if you want ’em. They’re called the Bad as Hell Fork Caps. So where’s the Jack Daniels?
