BIKERNET SUNDAY POST -S&S Jackets, Mustang Jack Tribute, Worlds Fastest Indian on Superbowl, Big Dog Wins, British Columbian Events, Arlen in Vegas, Carlini Fights For Handlebars, Biker Rock Band Cuts, Bad Cop Busted, FLA Helmet Law, Biker Inner Radio and Bikernet Goes To Sweden

Sam

Hey,

It’s Sunday, warm like the summer. Is the winter over in Calif? I rode to Mustang Jack’s funeral yesterday, in Mission Hills with Krylon John. Jack was a collector of Mustangs for years, an Easyriders fan to the bone and a brother who loved and cherished the work of David Mann. In the process of showing our respects and splitting lanes across the LA basin we road tested two six-speeds. One was the 100-inch Victory Vegas and an 88-inch Twin-Cam Dyna Bobber from Harley. Six-speeds (some over-drives, or beyond 1 to 1 ratio) are the long distance answer. We’ll post the full rundown and comparison between the two models in the near future.

Let’s hit the news and I’ll tell you about the rest of the day:

Big Dog Motorcycles’s All-New K-9 Wins 2006 V-Twin Bike Of The Year

WICHITA, Kansas (February 9, 2006) – Big Dog Motorcycles, the leader in the high-style cruiser niche and the largest manufacturer of chopper-style motorcycles in the world, is pleased to announce its newest chopper model, the K-9, received the 2006 V-Twin Bike Of The Year award by Easyriders Magazine at the V-Twin Expo, held February 3-5 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This marks the second consecutive year the company has received the top award. In 2005, Big Dog Motorcycles was honored for its Bulldog.

Nick Messer, President, Big Dog Motorcycles, accepted the award. Also present were Dustan Hahn, Chief Technical Officer; Marvin Bachman, Engineering Design Manager; and Shawn Berkley, Industrial Designer.

“To have our newest model named V-Twin Bike of the Year is a testament to the K-9’s unique blend of performance, technology, and style, and an honor to the engineers and dealer base who all provided invaluable input throughout the entire design process,” Messer stated.

With an ultra fat 300mm rear tire, rebellious frame stretch, 39-degree frame rake, and sweeping steel one-piece tank, the 690-pound, 9-foot long K-9 takes some aggressive styling cues from the Ridgeback – the 2004 New Model Bike of the Year – and adds an active a-frame swingarm suspension for optimal riding comfort.

Key technological features include a beefy, full-polished 117 cubic inch engine (1,916cc) fed by a Super G Carburetor for improved power and performance; a refined Baker 6-speed transmission; and the BDM Balance Drive System, which brings the final drive to the right side of the motorcycle, allowing for superior balance, agility, and easier cornering, even for wide-tire motorcycles.

After its September debut, the K-9 quickly rose to the top-seller in Big Dog Motorcycles’ 2006 five-bike line-up.

Carlini Stops Imitation Handlebars With Lawsuit And Hammer

(SANTA ANA, Calif., Feb. 6, 2006) A trade dress and trademark infringement lawsuit between Carlini Enterprises and three East Coast companies ended Feb. 1 with a victory for Carlini and the destruction of nearly 300 steel handlebars manufactured by V-Twin, Tedd Cycle and Zoom Cycle that were lesser-quality imitations of Carlini products. Based in Santa Ana, Calif., Carlini Enterprises specializes in the design and production of innovative, high-quality parts for Harley Davidsons and choppers.

“We reached settlement last October, but the court officially closed the lawsuit on Feb. 1. We were allowed to destroy these cheap imitations and this was sweet vindication of the Carlini brand whose reputation of excellence began 30 years ago when my father started the company,” commented T.J. Carlini, president and owner of Carlini Enterprises.

Carlini, with helpers alongside, personally destroyed the imitations using hammers to permanently degrade the products. “It was a great feeling to get rid of these cheap knock-offs, but it was exhausting work. We made sure to dent each handlebar and the imitation riser bushings we broke two hammers and my father-in-law cut his hand in the process. But it was worth it, we saved consumers from buying bad products and thinking they were Carlinis.”

Hillbilly Mirror

After living in the remote wilderness of Kentucky all his life, an old hillbilly decided it was time to visit the big city. In one of the stores he picks up a mirror and looks in it. Not ever having seen one before, he remarked at the image staring back at him, “How about that! Here’s a picture of my daddy.”

He bought the ‘picture’, but on the way home he remembered his wife, Lizzy, didn’t like his father. So he hung it in the barn, and every morning before leaving for the fields, he would go there and look at it. Lizzy began to get suspicious of these many trips to the barn.

One day after her husband left, she searched the barn and found the mirror.

As she looked into the glass, she fumed, “So that’s the ugly bitch he’s runnin’ around with.”

Governor fires prison-system chief

TALLAHASSEE — The embattled head of Florida’s prison system was abruptly fired Friday by Gov. Jeb Bush, following months of investigations into illegal activities by guards and top officials.

James Crosby, who grew up in the shadow of Florida State Prison and led the nation’s third-largest corrections system since January 2003, was ousted by Bush just a few months after the governor publicly expressed confidence in his leadership.

“I am deeply saddened and disappointed at the need to take this action,” Bush said in a terse statement.

Bush did not elaborate on what prompted him to ask for Crosby’s resignation. But when asked about the decision Friday afternoon in Miami, the governor cited a broad state and federal probe into the Corrections Department.

“There’s an ongoing investigation. I can’t speak of the details, but today was the appropriate time that we were given the chance to take action,” Bush said, adding, “As the details come out, it’ll be clear that it was the appropriate thing to do.”

The FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement have been investigating the agency for months. Eight corrections officers have been charged with illegally using and importing steroids, embezzlement and other crimes, while probes also are examining whether inmates were forced to do work personally for guards and officials.

A Cantina Religious Moment

A priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician, and member of the congregation, was chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner. He was delayed, so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited.

“I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when questioned by the police, was able to lie his way out of it. He went on to say that he had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his employer, had an affair with his boss’s wife, and taken illegal drugs. I was appalled. But as the days turned into years, I went on to learn that my congregation was not at all like that, and I had indeed come to a fine parish full of good and loving people.”

Just as the priest was finished, the politician finally arrived, full of apologies for being late. He immediately began to make his slick presentation. “I’ll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived,” said the politician. “In fact, I happened to have had the honor of being the first one to go to him in confession.”

‘WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN’ TRAILER LEADS MOTORCYCLE RUSH DURING SUPERBOWL

NEW YORK (February 9, 2006) – For the first time in a long while, a national motorcycle ad was seen by some 90.7 million viewers that watched this year’s Super Bowl XL. During the third quarter of the ABC match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks, football fans saw a trailer of the now playing motorcycle movie, World’s Fastest Indian, starring recent Golden Globe lifetime achievement award winner Anthony Hopkins.

world1

“We are thrilled that a quality movie such as this one has helped put motorcycles on the front line with audiences nationwide and with potential riders,” said Tim Buche, president of the Motorcycle Industry Council, which has a goal of promoting the positive messages of motorcycling through mainstream channels.

Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner’s Magnolia Pictures released the movie on Feb. 3. In The World’s Fastest Indian, which was directed by Roger Donaldson (The Recruit, Thirteen Days), Anthony Hopkins stars as Burt Munro, a man who never let the dreams of youth fade. In the late 1960’s, after a lifetime of perfecting his classic Indian motorcycle, Burt sets off from the bottom of the world, Invercargill, New Zealand, to clock his bike at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. With all odds against him, Burt puts his irrepressible kiwi spirit to the test in a cross-country journey through the American Heartland. His quest for a land speed record remains legendary within the motorcycle community to this day.

“What better movie could there have been for Super Bowl audiences where the major narrative seems to be about the long, hard road to glory? This film has an appeal across all ages and demographics, from bikers to families. It’s also a great testament to following through on your dreams and that’s a theme that all football fans can relate to,” said Cuban.

According to ABC, Sunday’s base of 90.7 million viewers was the largest Super Bowl audience in 10 years.

The World’s Fastest Indian is currently playing on more than 100 screens nationwide. Magnolia plans to expand that number steadily over the next month. More information on the film can be found at www.worldsfastestindian.com, as well as links to purchase tickets.

The spot was cut by Glenn Garland of Open Sky Entertainment using elements from his trailer for the film.

Magnolia recently mounted the successful multi-platform release of Steven Soderbergh’s Bubble, Alex Gibney’s Academy Award-nominated documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, the hit Christian-themed film, Woman Thou Art Loosed, and Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior, featuring the new martial arts hero, Tony Jaa.

IT’S MARGARITA TIME–Krylon and I shot across the Valley, then came face to face with LAX traffic squalor. We split lanes past the airport and jammed off the freeway in the Southbay region. About to get lost, trying to find Gard Hollinger’s secret design facility, we stopped in a parking lot barbeque stand and refueled, while making calls. I always get lost trying to find his joint.

RH home page banner

Gard was one of the selected builders for Carrie Repp’s Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse 2006 tour. We will feature all four bikes on Bikernet. It will be an incredible selection. Now check this: Unlike myself, I’m disqualified, you can have a chance to win any of these bikes. You pick, if you’re the winner. Just go to their site, or the roadhouse at any major event and sign up on the Roadhouse computers. Each year all four bikes are world class-incredible. Doesn’t cost a dime, just sign up and go. Hell, sign up at every event, watch the shows and keep your fingers crossed. I would.

Gards frame

Gard?s frame.

Gard is also working with a Laughlin Casino to throw a contest to help some would-be builders, enthusiast, to get on the show Build or Bust. We should have something up this Thursday.

Gard offered to let me use his shop equipment to work on our Bonneville bikes. Check this note from John Reed on the V-frame:
Good news. The frame passed the European TUV test. Our engineer is back from the states and has just talked to the T?V.

To pass the T?V test a frame has to bear 100.000 load alternations. As we have tested the Paioli front fork at the same time the frame was tested with 500.000 load alternations. So the frame beared more than 4 times of the standard test.

regards

–G?nther

I asked John if I should put a gusset in the neck. Since the post is finished and the loft is being worked on, I’m spending the afternoon moving forward on the V-Bike. The Baker transmission is ordered, the Accurate 120-inch Panhead is waiting JIMS connection rods and we’re moving along. Next week we’ll bring you a report on the 45. The roller is getting close. Can’t wait.

Ride Forever,
