Hey,
It?s Sunday, a day to relax and ride, eat breakfast burritos and hang with the bros. I sat in the middle of the shop yesterday and glanced from project to project. Both Bonneville bikes are out to Foremost Powder Coating. I have two old Delta shop tools, we scavenged from a burnt down garage. One is a belt sander and the other a bandsaw. We need both, but I can?t find the correct sized blades, I tried 64-inch, then 67-inch. Still too tight.
The belt sander is ready to rock on the shopping cart table we made, but the belt driven electrical motor runs the wrong direction. I?ve rewired it several time but it still runs clockwise. So I turned to the ?48 Panhead for a tune-up. Decided I?d change the points. Sure enough, don?t have a spare set. I reached for the Jack Daniels bottle and couldn?t find a shot glass. We better hit the news:

DISCOVERY CHANNEL BUILD?OFF UPDATE– I am leaving this A.M for Two Harbors MN where I will meet with the crew for the Discovery Ride. It is my understanding at this time that Craig Constantine, who is directing the show, has requested that no info or photos show the motorcycle or would give Kim Suter a advantage, be shown.
Since Kim’s motorcycle was scheduled to be finished last Friday I see that some doors are now opened. Though the director would prefer that Kim sees the bike at the same time Gypsy sees his so he can record their expressions and comments.
They have also requested that the complete motorcycle Not Be Shown until after the show on Saturday June 17th and announcing the winner on Sunday June 18th.
I think both requests are reasonable and that we should honor them.
I will be photographing the run and filming and writing a piece on it for you. I will get you some shots and words about the after build party as soon as I can, and then follow up with the rest. I will have my laptop and cell phone with me on trip.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM TO DISPLAY STAMP BIKES– The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that it will exhibit three of the four motorcycles featured on the new ?American Motorcycle? postage stamp series during the 2006 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The three motorcycles depicted on the stamps are owned, and ridden, by members of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America ? a 1918 Cleveland, 1940 Indian Four and a 1965 Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide. The fourth stamp, a drawing of a 1970s chopper, was created by an artist and will not be included in the Museum exhibit.
?How appropriate to have the actual motorcycles featured on the stamps on exhibit here,? said Executive Director Pepper Massey-Swan. ?The motorcycles depicted are an enduring part of our nation?s history, and relate specifically to our mission to preserve the great history of motorcycling.? Another connection is the building where the Museum is located. It was built in 1937 and in its previous life was the old Sturgis Post Office.
The four ?American Motorcycle? postage stamps will be unveiled in Sturgis at a stamp dedication ceremony on August 7th, and will be available for First-Day-of-Issue purchase and cancellation the same day.

The Museum will be open during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. (except for Sunday, August 6th when the Museum closes at 5:00 p.m.) Admission is $5.00 per person, $4.00 for persons 65 and older, children are admitted free of charge (must be accompanied by a paying adult).

BIKERNET WRITER SENDS BROTHER BACK TO IRAG WITH A PROMISE– My little brother, Joey, is heading back to Iraq for his umpteenth tour. He was out for two years and re-upped on September 12, 2001.He’s been in several major squirmishes, including the start of the war. Just a cool as hell regular guy who has never been a pro football player or had a wife e-mail Billy Lane.
Anyways, he is leaving in a month and coming back in a year. I am thinking about building a bike for him, as he doesn’t make shit in the Army. We always talk of riding together, but he is always overseas. He is recently married and has a one-year-old daughter, so what little he has is tied up in his family. I figured before I took out a loan and JB Welded a rattrap together, you could help me out with it. Maybe we could do a build where we chronicle the build up and climax it when I drop it off at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. What do you think?

JUDGE BUSTED FOR DRUNK DRIVING– This is a letter I wrote in response to a story in today’s paper about Superior Court Judge Elaine M. Rushing who, with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit, crashed her Porsche into a wall in Pismo Beach. She them proceeded on two flat tires to drive on further, eventually ending up in a ditch. When officers arrived she told them she had been a passenger in the back seat. The real driver fled after the initial crash and that is when she took over. Unfortunately for Ms. Rushing…Porsches have no back seat. As the officers on scene tried to give her a sobriety check, she refused saying, “But I am a judge, and I told you I wasn’t the driver.” She also repeatedly requested that the arresting officer call her husband, Conrad Rushing, a justice on the 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose.
When County Judge Bernard J Schwartz was arrested for driving with two times the legal alcohol limit this past July, he remarked to the arresting officers, “This is a substantial issue with my career. All you have to do is take me back to the hotel and I’ll go to sleep and wake up in the morning and get my car.” I hope you enjoy the following letter and have a “safe” weekend…..Big Dave
Kudos to the Tribune for printing the story of the two drunk judges who sought to use their office’s clout to avoid prosecution on drunk driving charges. A doff of the cap to the Pismo Beach police officers who would not bow to the pressure. A huge brickbat to the California Commission on Judicial Performance for only using public censure and not expulsion as a punishment.
Doesn’t the Commission understand that when the citizens charged with protecting the cornerstone of our society, equal justice for all, attempt to put themselves above it , they create a divide between the judiciary and everyone else? In not removing these two judges from their very public jobs they enforce the notion that those with power and influence answer to a different justice system in America.
The notion of a separate system of justice for the rich and powerful, more than any other issue, is corroding this nation. Unfortunately, the old Boy’s Club of Justices that form the Commission now appear as torch bearers for the same corrupt process they were charged with preventing.
