Hey,
I’m jazzed in some respects. The 120-inch Sportbike Panhead is flying back together-well not exactly. In my heart it is. Will Phillips of True-Track one of our esteemed sponsors is stopping by to check my swinarm mounting, later today.
It’s the 4th weekend. For the last three years I’ve been in Hawaii at the Choppers Only show. In some respects we’re glad to be home with the time to work on the bikes. In other respects we miss that weekend. It’s killer, like the only bike show in Paradise.

Maybe next year we’ll fly over again and pass on the LA Calendar show on the 14-15th of this month. It’s always a mad dash for Sturgis. Let’s hit the news so I can scramble back to the lift and back to work on the Sturgis Salt Shaker. I have a couple more thoughts regarding this weekend that I will impart at the end. Mysterious, huh?

BIKERS HIT HOLLISTER ANYWAY–Bikers arrive for Hollister rally despite lack of official sanction Motorcycles are roaring into Hollister for the legendary annual pilgrimage to the town Marlon Brando made famous in “The Wild One.” Just one problem: Officials called off this year’s rally months ago. The event, which has brought tens of thousands of bikers into town every July 4 weekend to ride and drink and pay tribute to the mystique of the outlaw biker, was declared too expensive and too dangerous by city officials.
After forking over $250,000 for crowd control and other law enforcement costs last year, the city council in February voted 3-2 to pull the plug. Undeterred by that decision, bikers are revving their engines, vendors are ready to hawk leather chaps and fully-booked hotels are preparing to handle the onslaught of bikers and gawkers. A divided community and resilient bikers have made this year’s event one to watch. “It’s a dirty, stinking, rotten event,’ said San Benito County Sheriff Curtis Hill. “This year, we have a dirty, stinking, rotten non-event.” Hollister was put on the map after a 1947 motorcycle melee led by World War II veterans was dramatized in Life Magazine and later popularized in the Brando film. The town has been a popular destination for motorcyclists since. In 1997, the city contracted with the Hollister Independence Rally, a local nonprofit, to manage the event. Last year, the organizing group filed for bankruptcy after the rally, leaving the city stuck with the costs of putting on the event. For the first time since 1997, Hollister has refused to issue licenses for vendors to sell wares on public street.
But the town’s seal of disapproval may even bring out more riders. “A lot of us stayed away from it because it got so commercial,” said Glenn “Reb” Courtney, a member of the Roughriders Motorcycle Club, who rolled into town at the beginning of the week.”Now we’re back.” How many will make their way to the rally remains unclear. Estimates range from 10,000 over the weekend to 30,000 people downtown each day. Some expect chaos. The main drag through downtown, San Benito Street, was closed except to motorcycle traffic last year. With the city refusing to close streets this year, the risk of accidents could rise as motorcycles and cars try to navigate streets filled with people. “This year is a free for all,” said Charisse Tyson, an owner of Johnny’s Bar & Grill. Police will be out in full force starting Friday. The city has budgeted $150,000 to control the crowds this weekend. After tensions last year, at least six law enforcement agencies – including the Parole Board – will be closely watching motorcycle gangs like the Hells Angels and their rivals, the Mongols. Chief of Police Jeff Miller said that the city could call for more help from nearby cities if it’s needed.

SUNDAY BIKERNET TECH QUESTION–U2003 IRON HORSE CHOPPER IS STARTING TO SHIFT HARD. NEUTRAL IS GETTING HARD TO FIND. GOT A 6 SPEED BAKER. ANY SUGGESTIONS? SLICK,
“Dianne or Ricky Orr” First, check your cable adjustment. You should only have about a dime thickness of slack at the lever. I’ll bet your cable stretched. Let me know. There’s an adjustment a couple of feet below the lever on the cable. Ride Forever, –Bandit CANTINA TECH QUESTION ON BDL BELTS– I have completed installation of the BDL Primary Belt Kit on a 1992 FLH (enclosed belt kit) When installing the belt around the rear pulley and front pulley at the same time the belt was extremely tight with very little give. I would like to know if this is normal for this kit, or should there be some play on the belt after being installed. Right now is it so called “piano wire” tight. If the belt is too tight, would it affect the shifting of gears ? Would really appreciate an answer about this as soon as possible. Don’t want to damage the belt. Thanks in advance, hoping to hear from you soon. –Smiley Hey, Generally the belts feel extremely tight until it’s actually in place. Then there should be about a 1/4 inch up and down play. Let me know how it feels after you run it, even for five miles. If you have any questions, send me a note. –Laura PRISON GUARD RE-HIRED– CT – HARTFORD, Conn. — A state arbitrator has ruled that a former prison guard fired two years ago for his alleged association with the Outlaws Motorcycle Club should not have been fired. James Kight was fired in 2003 after he allegedly lied to state investigators about his association with the bikers’ group. Kight, a prison guard since 1992, will be put back on the state payroll and will get back pay and benefits from February of 2005. Kight is the second state employee to get his job back after being fired in the case involving the biker club. In March, an arbitrator gave Randy Sabettini his job back. At least two other grievances are pending from men who were disciplined for associating with the club. –from Rogue WEST VIRGINIA ABATE & BIG BEN’S accident– As PRESIDENT of WEST VIRGINIA ABATE I have waited for all or at least most of the facts to come in on BIG BEN’S accident. First and foremost I’m glad that he appears to be all right. We all have to remember that he made the choices that all of us young and old have to make. As far as I know that is part of our constitutional right and we some times have to learn the hard way that our choices have consequences but they still should be ours to make. First off the lady driving the car did not see or did not pay attention to what was coming and caused this accident, it was clearly a RIGHT OF WAY VIOLATION that has been proven. As far as BIG BEN he learned what the rest of the motor cycling community has known or should have known, we are invisible to the other vehicles on the road way. He also learned about the law in PENNSYLANIA he was not supposed to be riding with out a license or a helmet and that is because he did not have the experience (2 YEARS) or a valid license to be on the motorcycle. In WEST VIRGINIA we are trying to change our helmet laws to better suit our riding community and the riders that come to visit our state. ONE 2 years riding experience and 21 and older or motorcycle safety course to be able to ride with out a helmet. TWO a license plate that shows law enforcement who can and can’t ride with out a helmet (perhaps a red stripe) THREE the DMV will have to have proof of two years riding experience to issue a non rookie (red stripe) license plate plus proof of age, insurance and or motorcycle safety course. Above all we as riders should have the right to decide our own choices, as we do in many cases already. DO NOT RESUSITATE orders are all ready common place, A women’s right to decide what happens to her own body ROWE Vs WADE, to join the armed services to put our selves in harms way in defense of our country. These are just some of the choices we make in our lives that effect us and our loved ones lives, I don’t need some one telling me what or when to where what, I have been making those choices for myself since before I went to VIET NAM and I would like the right to continue to do so. –WILLIAM C SIMMONS

SHE RIDES FOR CANCER CURE– That “gallon” of fluid that was taken from my right lung is replacing itself as we communicate…Nevertheless, let me start back a couple of weeks to Hillcrest Hospital…the fluid and some tissue from the lower part of my right lung were sent out for biopsy. The results arrived and I was called to the doctor’s office last Wednesday. The fact that I had to go in was message enough for any survivor…the fluid showed evidence of “clusters of malignant cells”! Yesterday, today and tomorrow have been and are “more tests days” for me. I have a 9am appointment on July 5, at which time Dr. Encarnacion and I will review the test results and the options and, hopefully, agree on a “plan of action”…
Some of you are aware of this and have asked how you can help me…your support is all I need to get through this. The local “Harley Owner’s Group” will send a representative to the house on Wednesday morning to take me to the Cancer Center for my appointment. A couple of you are going to be at the house at 8:30 when that representative arrives and I jump on that Harley! WooHoo ! What A Ride ! A couple of you have said you will meet me at the doctor’s office. And a couple have said you will be at the house that afternoon…WHAT MORE CAN A PERSON ASK?
During my presentations of “Cruisin 4 Cures”…there are three statements that I make…and I will not wavier from those statements…
1. I refuse to allow cancer or heart failure to define Sharon Wynn.
2. I refuse to allow cancer or heart failure to cast a shadow over the remaining days of my life.
3. I simply refuse to just sit and survive !
Keep in mind…Wednesday 5:30 at Lake Shore Baptist Church…we will have dinner and then I will present the “Cruisin 4 Cures” project to them. Let me know a couple of days ahead so I can the dinner reservation.
Peace and Hope,
–Sharon
Lake Shore Baptist Church presentation is scheduled on Wednesday, July 19… 5:30 in dinner and 6:30 presentation…

OTHER STATES MAY FOLLOW CALIFA EPA REGS– While environmentalists and air quality regulators would welcome the development, it would be bad news for much of the small engine industry. California aims to cut smog emissions from the highly polluting engines by about 35 percent.
Margo Oge, director of EPA’s office of transportation and air quality, said implementing California’s standard nationally could work well, though no final decision has been made. “We believe harmonizing with California will be cost-effective, good for the environment, good for the industry, good for all the stakeholders,” Oge said after a hearing Thursday on California’s request for an EPA waiver so it can implement the rules.
“We are concerned that as other sources are being controlled, this source is going to continue to be a bigger source for air pollution, so we are pretty interested in finishing our work and putting forth cost-effective standards for the country,” she said. “… A strong option that we’re considering is harmonizing with California.”
EPA is considering California’s waiver request even as it works to write the national small-engine rules. Both decisions are expected by year’s end, after lengthy delays because of opposition from Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond, R-Mo.
Missouri is home to two factories owned by Briggs & Stratton Corp., the nation’s largest small engine maker. Briggs & Stratton has resisted California’s approach, which would require adding catalytic converters to the small engines that power lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chain saws and other devices.
The company says adding catalytic converters would be so costly that jobs would have to be sent overseas, and also has contended there could be fire safety risks. An EPA study mandated by Bond rejected any safety risk when it was released in March, but Bond and the small-engine industry have criticized that finding, and the industry is funding its own, separate safety study.

ANOTHER 4TH OF JULY DEAL–Here’s some pics of a bike I built… What a blast! It’s a 2006 pro street with a 360 rear tire on a split rim, right side drive with a 6 speed trans. I jammed an S&S 124″ motor in it and run it with a 3 5/8″ BDL belt drive.
The oil tank is built into the rear splash guard and the battery box is mounted underneath, both of those items and the frame are compliments of Brighton Machine shop. The frame is 2 up and 6 out on a curved backbone. All wiring and hydraulics are run inside the frame.
The bike runs like a scalded dog… I had it down in Daytona and got LOTS of looks especially with the flames shooting out on I-95. Recognize the portly cat checking it out?
Me and my buddy painted it, red metal flake over black base with a black stripes. The thing looks wicked in the sun and mostly black at night….. Except when the blue and reds are shinin on it! It was a great adventure for my first build,,,,
Now, I need to sell it so I can build another….. So help a poor fool out! I hope you like it. How about $46,500 obo? I’ve got $38,500 in parts wholesale. I just want to do another one. I appreciate your help.

WAS THAT GOOD OR WHAT?– Not bad for a holiday Sunday Morning. I noticed that we didn’t receive many jokes, but the girls were way strong. What’s it mean? The sun is out, girls’ clothes are peeling, so shine the jokes and chase the girls?
Damn good notion, but I’ve got bikes to build. Have a helluva Holiday, and if you have a few extra bucks sponsor our Bonneville effort. Besides for the first time in my life I’m totally devoted to one woman, Nyla. Still love to look, but that’s as far as it goes. But then there’s the Bandit side of me…
