Hey,

Is it 4th of July celebration weekend or not? Can’t figure it out. Seth said he didn’t want to have the Hollister of the 4th of July weekend and it’s next weekend on the 6th. So are we celebrating this weekend? Ah, fuck it. Let’s celebrate life and the freedom to ride and build custom bikes every weekend. Sounds like a plan to me.

Make sure you check out the Ultimate Saving Shovelheads tech. It’s a monster, but shows every move from Rivera/Primo. It’s on the home page now.

We’re getting close to going to paint with the Assalt Weapan. Gard Hollinger and LA Chop Rods are now sponsors and Gard is making the cowling for the dash. We remade the dash at his shop so it could be lower, but Rodan, the SCTA official, came over yesterday and announced that we are now in the partially streamlined category with the cowling. So we can make a fairing. Back to the drawing board. Let’s hit the news.

CITY OF GETTYSBURG RECOGNIZES TWO LEADING LADIES OF MOTORCYCLING– During the 15th annual Mid-Atlantic Women’s Motorcycle rally held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Mayor William Troxell presented a Key to The City Of Gettysburg to Jennifer Levan and Sara Liberte. Jennifer Levan is co-owner of Battelfield Harley Davidson in Gettysburg, PA and Sara Liberte is co-owner of RT’s North Hills Cycle Inc. In Pittsburgh, PA. The two ladies were recognized for their dedication to the Motorcycling community and continuous effort to better the community.

The practice of bestowing a ceremonial “key to the city” dates back to medieval times. Today, cities give their keys to esteemed visitors, prominent locals, and worthy organizations.

For three days in July of 1863, a costly civil war battle raged between the Union and Confederate armies in and around the Borough of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The two armies met here in battle as the Confederate army sought to take the war to the north through the crossroads of Gettysburg. The Union army made their stand here. Strategies by both armies were sometimes grave miscalculations, the culmination of which resulted in a decisive victory for the Union. Over 51,000 Americans died during this battle. Although the Civil War continued two years following the battle of Gettysburg, the battle is viewed as the turning point of the war.

Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world visit the Gettysburg battlefield, which is operated and maintained by the National Park Service. The battlefield has become a memorial to brave Americans who fought here attempting to preserve their individual beliefs. As you stand on the ground where they fought, one can visualize the terrible skirmishes that pitted American against American.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this sacred land during the 2007 Gettysburg Bike week July 12-15th. Tour the battlefields and enjoy the South Eastern Pennsylvania scenic roads. Activities to include the Dale Earnhardt NASCAR Experience, Harley-Davidson Demo Fleet and new product display, The Budweiser Clydesdales, Poker runs, Bike shows, great food Live music and more. HOLLISTER TO ROCK NEXT WEEKEND WITH MOTORCYCLE HISTORY– It’s become a July tradition in Hollister – thousands of motorcycles cruise down San Benito Street as bikers try to get in touch with their history with a little music, a few cold drinks and a brand new T-shirt.

Now, after a year’s absence as an official event, the Hollister Motorcycle Rally is back on track and set to open Friday, July 6 with more vendors, additional entertainment and a whole new outlook on how to make the event a success.

“I don’t want to do an event that people don’t want,” said promoter Seth Doulton, of Horse Power Promotions. “If this rally isn’t good for the city, not just during the three days of the event but all year round, then I don’t want to do it.”

The rally is being professionally promoted for the first time in its 10-year history, after city council members last year refused to allow the rally to take place, citing increasing law enforcement costs. More than 10,000 bikers came anyway, forcing the city to hire additional law enforcement to the tune of nearly $400,000, with local taxpayers footing the bill.

City officials have also complained in the past about the difficulties in monitoring sales during the rally, which reduces the amount of sales tax revenue the Hollister receives.

In August 2006, however, a new local planning group – the Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee – formed, and hired Horse Power to take over promoting the event. The council approved the rally later that year, provided HMRC pay for estimated law enforcement costs upfront and make improvements to sales monitoring.

The group paid the council $382,000 in March, and a monitoring team will conduct checks of vendor sales daily, as well as provide an estimate of all sales on the last day of the rally. These changes helped put the final stamp of approval on an event that Doulton says will be “totally different than in past years.”

“We’ve made four big improvements that I think will make this rally the best yet,” Doulton said. “The boundaries of the rally are still about the same, but the inside venues are going to be completely different.”

The first major change, Doulton said, is the switching the locations of vendors and motorcycle parking. In past years, bikers would park along San Benito Street, and vendors were located on Sixth Street. This year, vendor booths will line both sides of San Benito Street, while motorcycle parking will be moved to Sixth Street.

Vendors will also be located at the old Fremont School on Fourth Street, which is being dubbed “Vendor Village” during the event. Also located at the school will be the “Builder’s Square,” where more than 12 of the country’s top motorcycle builders – such as Kirk Taylor of Custom Design Studios, Scott Long of Central Coast Cycles and El Pitts of Vegas City Choppers – will be on hand to share products and ideas.

“These guys are like celebrities; they’ve been on Discovery Channel and other channels showing their work,” Doulton said. “If you want to have a custom bike built, these are the guys to talk to.”

Another event new this year will take place at the Granada Theater on Fifth Street, which will show biker movies, at no charge, all weekend. Movies scheduled include “The Wild One,” “Easy Rider,” “World’s Fastest Indian” and “Choppertown.”

The fourth improvement is the addition of two new stages within the downtown area, so live entertainment will be heard throughout the rally, Doulton said.

“There will be a stage at Fremont School, a main stage on Fifth Street right in front of city hall, and a third one in the beer garden at Sixth and San Benito streets,” he said. “This way, there will be live music playing in three locations all day long.”

Scheduled musical guests include Wiggle Wagons, Shakedown, Johnny Espinoza, Blue Baron, Crimes of Passion, The Usual Suspects and Charley Brechtel.

Other events include the Ego Trip Custom Bike Show, a Ms. Hollister contest presented by The Broken Wing and Quick Throttle magazine, biker games such as a balloon toss and a slow race presented by Whiskey Creek, the HMR Box-Off presented by Bull Dog Boxing, the second annual Emmaus House Charity Run and various biker breakfasts, including one at the Hollister United Methodist Church.

The difference between this rally and the ones held in past years is the way the 2007 event celebrates Hollister’s history as the “birthplace of the American Biker,” Doulton said.

BIKERNET HEALTH CODE– One day I saw a wonderful old gal sitting on her front step, so I walked up to her and said, “I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look! What is your secret for such a long, happy life?”

“I smoke ten stogies a day,” she said. “Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint. All my life I’ve eaten only junk food and I put away at least a fifth of Jack Daniels every week. On weekends I pop pills, and never do any exercise at all.”

Absolutely, absolutely amazing I thought, and asked, “How old are you?”

“Twenty-four,” she replied.

MOTORCYCLE TRAINING IN FLORIDA, WHATS THE COST? I am in favor of fair testing to get a motorcycle endorsement. It should be noted that when separate licensing started in Florida for motorcycles the operator would have to have a licensed rider bring his or her motorcycle to the test site. They would also have to supply a 4-wheel vehicle that would have to pass a safety inspection, have insurance and a licensed driver. The inspector would give the motorcycle rider some instruction and follow in the 4-wheeler.

Though this was a test equal to what car operators had to go through and actually involved a road test it was time consuming and took numerous people. People complained and eventually a course was set up to do the testing and in many cases due to the value of property it was not very large. Many people complained that they could not go through the course with their larger motorcycles and in many cases borrowed a smaller bike to get their endorsement.

Now seeing what was going on MSF and others started offering schools. People paid money and were given classes on smaller cc motorcycles and in some cases used them to pass the tests. Then came the goodie: the course being allowed to give a certificate of completion to those that took their course and that could be brought to the DMV and a motorcycle operators endorsement was issued with out any further testing.

It should be noted that the schools use smaller cc motorcycles than most of the students end up riding. If the law making motorcycle courses mandatory for motorcycle riders of Florida is not changed it will mean those teaching the schools will have control of licensing. It also means that the State of Florida will no longer need motorcycle testing sites and the valuable property could be used for other purposes. This is well known by the state and one of the reasons they are allowing this to happen. They to will profit from the change in the law. It is not about Safety but about Money!

Money has been added to motorcycling licensing and registration for years that is specifically for education. I keep asking where this money is. No one seems to want to answer that question. I suspect because it has been used for other than what it was supposed to be used for.

If this was really about safety and not money the State of Florida would have Free Rider Courses paid for with the money that they have been collecting from motorcyclist for years. Those that feel they need rider education could take the courses.

Those who do not could take a test that would show if they could ride in traffic as opposed to on a course. The State of Florida should recognize the dangerous situation, conflict of interest and possibility for abuse in having the motorcycle operator’s license waiver privilege available to those making money from these courses.

If the course is part of a motorcycle dealership where the sale of a motorcycle is contingent on the purchase on a license being issued there are sure to be some who would look at profit over safety and or qualifications.

Though I am in favor of Rider Education For All Who Feel They need It, I am equally Opposed To Making It Mandatory For Those That Do Not. I would like to suggest that all concerned parties contact their elected officials and let them know how they feel on this issue.

On July 1, 2008 Florida Statue 322.12 Section 16 will require all applicants for a motorcycle operator license Regardless Of Age to successfully complete a motorcycle safety course.

Remember this is about Your Right To Decide If You Need Mandatory Rider Training Or Not. It is Not About Other People Who Might Benefit From It. Right or Wrong People should still have the right to decide what is best for themselves.

THREE GIRLS OF BIKERNET IN MEXICO– Three women go down to Mexico one night to celebrate college graduation. They get drunk and wake up in jail, only to find that they are to be executed In the morning – though none of them can remember what they did the night before.

The first one, a redhead, is strapped in the electric chair and is asked if she has any last words. She says, “I just graduated from Trinity Bible College and believe in the almighty power of God to intervene on the behalf of the innocent.”

They throw the switch and nothing happens. They all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her.

The second one, a brunette, is strapped in and gives her last words. “I just graduated from the Harvard School of Law and I believe in the power of Justice to intervene on the part of the innocent.” They throw the switch. And again, nothing happens.

Again they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her.

The last one (you know it), a blonde, is strapped in and says, “Well, I’m from Texas A & M University and just graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I’ll tell y’all right now, y’all ain’t gonna electrocute nobody if you don’t plug this thing in.

Picking up his custom motorcycle from LifeStyle Cycles was Dave Cruz (seated on bike) as well as (left to right) Mark “Junior” Skolnick from LifeStyle Cycles and Dave Stauffer, President of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Ana. The custom bike, valued at $48,500.00 was given away as part of an opportunity drawing at the “Ride The Coast” event.

WHAT KIND OF CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE CAN YOU GET FOR $10? HOW ABOUT A $48,000 PRO STREET CUSTOM FROM LIFESTYLE CYCLES– Anaheim, California – “All I was doing was donating $10 to help out the Boys and Girls Club ? I wasn’t expecting to win anything!” Said 37-year-old David Cruz about the single opportunity drawing ticket he purchased. “Really, I’ve never won anything in my life ? this is incredible!” His $10 donation came back to him in the form of a $48,500.00 custom Pro Street style motorcycle. Cruz had been in the process of saving up for a motorcycle when he got the phone call he had won.

The custom bike was donated by LifeStyle Cycles’ customer Andre Peschong to help raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Ana. Tickets for the opportunity drawing were sold months before the annual “Ride the Coast” event held June 24th 2007 where the bike was given away.

“All of us at LifeStyle Cycles are really happy for Dave, as well as the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana.” says LifeStyle Cycles owner Mark “Junior” Skolnick (who was the Grand Marshall of the Ride the Coast event), “A lot of money was raised for a good cause, and we’re looking forward to seeing Dave on his new bike at some of LifeStyle Cycles’ rides!”

ALAMO QUOTE FROM MARCH 6, 1836– On that fateful day, Davy Crockett woke up and walked from his bunk on the floor of the Alamo up to the observation post on the south wall.

William B. Travis and Jim Bowie were up there already. The three gazed at the hordes of Mexicans moving steadily towards them.

Davy turned to Bowie with a puzzled look on his face and said, “Jim, are we landscaping today?”

NON-HOLIDAY JULY WEEKEND, ALMOST CLOSE TO THE FOURTH OF JULY–I’m confused, lost, drained, and need to fabricate a Best of Show Trophy For Run For Breath Charity Ride. I received some heated e-mails around the Sturgis County Line Bikernet report, in the news from a couple of weeks ago.

“Bandit,” Jay Allan said in an anxious phone conversation. “I’m going to going to kick your ass on the salt flats in Bonneville, of you don’t straighten out that report.”

racers
Bandit and Jay Allan lined up for a grudge match.

Hell, I didn’t write it. It came from a South Dakota New Paper. Seems there’s some political bullshit afoot in the Badlands, but it’s not a big deal. Somebody is trying to pull one of Jay’s Beer Licenses, but this particular license won’t stop Jay from having lots of bars inside his facility. He’s still fighting.

Sturgis County Line Banner

Jay is working hard to build a world-class facility and pay for the entire tamale with cash, by selling some of his other properties. He won’t be saddled with debt. I can dig that. I’m trying to squeeze more facts out of Jay and Lon, about the facility, the bands, camping, etc. But I can’t reach ’em. I’m sure Jay’s in the shop tuning his FXR and throwing wrenches at our poster of Valerie and our Salt Shaker from last year.

We’ll bring you news as it floats to the surface. Click on their banner for all the info.

In the meantime I need to write another Assalt Weapon report and bring you up to date. We also have several features, bobber tech from Wolfgang, skinny GOB from Curt, another travel report from Todd Mehrer and more reports from Big Dog. Next week we’ll load in a new shop lathe, new lifts and pack for Hollister. Never, ever a dull moment around Bikernet.

Ride Forever,
