LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES– Hell, I thought the lady heard my bike too!!! It’s not like it had stock mufflers on it. Guess I was wrong… Those V&H Straight-Shots with the cut down baffle weren’t loud enough. That’ll change with my next ride… I guarantee who’s ever in a mile radius will definitely hear me, much less see me.

Respectfully,

ABOUT BERRY WARDLAW, MASTER ENGINE BUILDER FROM CYRIL HUZE– Every top custom builder knows that if he dreams a wild performance custom engine setup the address to make it happen is in Alabama at the headquarters of Accurate Engineering. There they meet (usually in the office/kitchen) with Berry Wardlaw who will demonstrate to you in less time that one needs to finish a lunch, that wild can be outrageous, beautiful can be sexier, and that fast will be the number you give him (just follow his driveline recommendations).

There are no stock engines on the Accurate Engineering Shelves, no dream engine in a crate waiting to be picked up. But there’s multitude of custom engine parts, most of them designed by Berry himself (wait to see the new aluminum cylinders for Panheads). All his engines are built to suit with style and flash by hand.

So ask him what you want inside & outside, explain to him how you ride, and Berry & crew will start machining, polishing, powdercoating, mixing parts following secret recipes for performance and reliability that he will never disclose to you or even to me.

During these last years Berry’s trademark has been his refined with even more refined Panheads, Knuckles & Shovelheads engines. But as told you before, he wrenches in the wild, and if you visit him at the right time, you can get a glance at much more unusual than this. Like a half Pan/half Knuck engine or the new Pan in preparation to be the fastest Panhead ever raced on Bonneville flats by Bikernet.com (see Berry in some of the Sunday Post Shots with the Assalt Weapan). Berry can build anything from part Knuckle and Pan, to dual carb evos. You have a notion, he as the abilities.

Worth noting, all engines carry a warranty of one year or 12,000 miles. Berry is the man behind the custom engine used on my bike “The Bravest.” –Cyril Huze

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THE GRAYBEARD IN YOUR LIFE– Go back in time to the era that created the mystique of the biker lifestyle. A treasure trove of nostalgia in the form of two books that set the trend for biker adventures. “A Brotherhood of Outlaws” is the most relevant novel of the seventies. Written by Bob Bitchin, it is the story of how a group of outlaw bikers banded together to twist the government’s tail feathers and to end the national helmet law.

Brotherhood3

This is a never-dull story of what the Brotherhood of Outlaws was really like in the era of Choppers. Also, “Biker”, a collection of true stories of what it was like cruising the highways of America on a Harley in the 70’s. Sturgis, when there were only about 1,300 outlaws, Daytona’s original Run to the Sun, with Less than 3,000 bikers.

See where the history of these events, and more, began. Available at Bikernet.com in the Gulch.

We’ve had good luck with Saxons. Might want to check them out.

BIKERNET READER REQUESTS AIH EVALUATION– I just finished reading you’re, very well written evaluation of the “Saxon” custom cycle line and was impressed with your descriptive report (especially the “Warlord” model, which is what I may purchase).

I am currently in the market for a new bike (I recently sold my Harley Davidson Heritage Softail) and am considering purchasing from either American Iron Horse or Saxon. As such, I have been researching these two product lines since I know absolutely nothing about custom choppers.

They are both cosmetically pleasing, but I really don’t want to spend $30,000 + on something that is unreliable or that will spend more time in the shop than on the road (I’m funny that way).

As I read through your critiques of a number of motorcycle makes and models, I didn’t find anything that addressed the American Iron Horse line. Do you have any input or experience with this particular company? I am primarily interested in the “2007 JUDGE” model from American Iron Horse.

There is a dealer just a few miles from my residence that I visited the other day who had one on the floor that I was able to sit on and look at. It was very good looking and fit me like a glove; however, that’s about the extent of my knowledge on this particular company/bike. I have since researched the company and this particular model (the Judge) on the internet for hours. Although I have yet to read anything about the JUDGE, I was very disappointed as I read a slew of postings from owners of other models from Iron Horse. I read approximately 50 separate evaluations from people who have purchased an Iron Horse and 38 of the 50 were negative.

I suspect that even with the most quality of merchandise there will always be those who will complain, but 38 out of 50 seems a bit excessive to me, which leads me to believe that there may be some problematic issues with the entire American Iron Horse line. Some of the problems owners described were rather serious (ie. transmissions freezing up, clutches burning out, excessive oil leaks, etc?)

If you get the opportunity, could you look into this company and their quality issues? If you get the chance to ride the JUDGE from Iron Horse, could you run it through a series of rides and let me know what you think? I really hope the 38 riders I read of exaggerated their stories, or were the overall minority of the populace who have purchased from Iron Horse. Regardless, at this point, your report will most likely be the deciding factor of weather or not I purchase from that company

We haven’t had the opportunity to critique AIH models and recently it has been reported that the company may be in trouble. We haven’t received any reports from AIH to the contrary. Check it out.–Bandit

CRO CUSTOMS NEW MODEL– What’s up big man? Gotta get a ton of stuff to you for an update at some point, and a possible feature, yeah yeah, I know, as long as I have a hot chick in the pic, you’ll run it. 🙂

Just finished this ’72 big bore shovel for Matt Davis of Dice magazine. Very cool bike, and it was built they way I love to do things.. hunkering together parts via swap meets and trades, some bardaring and two friends drinkn, spittn, and cursing to get it done.

All the major pieces are genuine H-D, most rebuilt. This was a true ground up build of parts that have never been on the same bike. Matt will have it at the Primer Nationals if you are up that way next weekend, I’ll have my Pan there as well. Oh yeah, check the new shop out.

THERE I WAS– I was nervously waiting for the wiring to make sense and the bike to fire. It did, like a dream and Dave Rash will be proud of the exhaust. Suddenly I was relieved. It came together after 9 months of struggling, wrenching, designing and we passed the first test. She ran.

bike on dyno
There I was with Barry Wardlaw, master engine builder (right) and Sparky, from Lifestyle Cycles, in their Dyno room.

The second test was the dyno runs, not so much for the pre-tested Accurate Outlaw Panhead engine, but the entire chassis. Would the oil tank work? Would the bike come unglued under hard running. Did the brakes work, the chain hang, the brackets fail and vibrate to pieces?

Jim Murillo from Jims Cycle Painting holding one of the panels.

We ran it through six wide open passes up to 4th gear, flat out and she held strong, shifted well, sounded like a champ and displayed 115 HP and over 200 pounds of torque. We’re rockin’ have a list a page long of projects and one more test ahead-Valerie in the saddle cruising along the salt. But I can’t tell ya how pleased I am and relieved.

We’re almost there at the giant white dyno in Bonneville, where the real testing begins. Just one week to go.

Ride Forever,
