THE MAGAZINE BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS–for March 27th, 2025

Hey,

So interesting, the number of biker magazines being printed now. A woman, Pat Fisher, worked for me for years. She said of publishers: the ink goes to their heads. So, what’s the deal? I know the facts behind some of the covers.

Bottom line the business model is a struggle, but brothers and sisters have the passion to make their titles soar once more. Think about it. In so many respects, we are a small market, the biker, chopper, performance motorcycle market pales in comparison to automotive, travel and women’s fashion. Still, we now have Cycle Source at the head of the pack, with Choppers Mag, big format and sheet-fed for quality printing, but not on the newsstands. Easyriders struggled through three publishing efforts in a decade and is still trying, and Hot Bike emerged from the Prime Media ashes determined to fly onto the streets once more.

It’s the passion driving everyone of these exploits. It’s the drive to see your dreams in print, to test your editorial notions against newsstand sales and subscription numbers.

Magazine production today demands tremendous work and time with website efforts a must and social media constant contact. The newsstand distribution model is a mess and hard on publishers. Still, there’s hope with the ability to produce a magazine almost at your fingertips.

If you can take photos and write a story, the rest is available on your computer. One person can edit, layout and make the pages print ready.

As we kick our bikes to life and peel into the wind, the same passion flourishes on the pages of several magazines. Do they make a profit? Who cares, they are brothers and sisters living the dream of making their mark on the industry in the printed form. No matter what, having your bike featured in a magazine is still the shit, something to be truly proud of forever.

Let’s hit the news.

The News was provided by the Bikernet Team including: Wayfarer, the Redhead, Bob T. Sam Burns, Laura, Barry Green, El Waggs, J.J. Solari, Amy White, Jenn and the rest of the crew.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM TEAM HEADS TO DONNIE SMITH SHOW—Lacey and her pal are rolling out to the Donnie Smith Show as I write this.

Our display will promote the Museum, our first Raffle Effort and the annual Hamster Auction. Hugh “the Chopper” King’s bike will be on display along with a wild Arlen Ness Hamster Custom and several examples of Danial James Fine Art supporting the 85th Annual Sturgis Rally.

We’ve worked hard to make sure she’s hooked up with everything she needs to build a magnificent Museum display center stage at the popular show in Minneapolis this weekend.

Danial James busted his ass on all the art, then delivered it from Denver to Sturgis this week.

Rumor has it you can buy Museum Raffle Tickets on the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum website. If not reach out to me and I’ll make sure you get hooked up. If you’re going to the show Lacey will have a sign-up sheet to help with raffle tickets, since we can’t sell tickets in Minnesota for a South Dakota Raffle. It’s against the law.

We will bring you additional reports as the show gets underway.

HISTORY LESSON OF THE WEEK–1839

‘OK’ enters national vernacular

On March 23, 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct” at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans. During the late 1830s, it was a favorite…

A BROTHER AND A MAJOR FREEDOM FIGHTER PASSES–Mark Buckner, March 30, 1954-March 15, 2025

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation and in fact, the entire motorcycling community worldwide, have lost a leader, a mentor and a friend. Mark Buckner ended a long and hard battle with cancer on March 15, 2025. This is perhaps the only battle he ever lost.

Mark served in countless capacities in the motorcyclists’ rights movement, including Executive Director of ABATE of Colorado, President of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and most recently as Executive Director for the MRF.

He has also been inducted into numerous halls of fame, among them, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame as a Freedom Fighter, the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame and Museum and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame.

He was a tenacious freedom fighter and pulled no punches. He didn’t have to agree with someone in order to be able to find a way to work with them. He was an incredible leader, mentor and friend for everyone on two wheels. He had many friends and colleagues across the country and around the world. Mark has ridden motorcycles in places many of us only dream of.

He was a wonderful recruiter of members and leadership into the biker rights movement. Many of today’s leaders can share experiences about being “Bucknered”.

His contributions and dedication have resulted in tremendous advances in motorcyclists’ rights and he will be greatly missed by all.

Ride in Peace Mark.

ULTIMATE USCCA GUN NUT LESSON–Before you ever load your gun…

…you need to understand this about self-defense:

It’s not about being MACHO.

It’s not about being AGGRESSIVE.

It’s not about KILLING other people.

Self-defense is about self-control.

What do I mean?

 1. Self-defense is about controlling your mind.

Imagine you’re facing a man with a knife.

And he’s serious about stabbing you and taking your stuff.

What’s the first thing you need to do?

It’s NOT to grab for your gun.

FIRST, you need to process the visual information in front of you.

– Is this person close enough to be an immediate threat?

– Is this person a deadly threat?

– Is deadly force my only option?

Now, the answer to all these questions might be “yes”.

But if you don’t know the right questions to ask…

If you don’t answer those questions, even if it only takes a split second…

If you don’t have self-control over your mind…

You could do something that lands you in JAIL or WORSE.

Self-defense is knowing when NOT to shoot as much as when to shoot.

But what else?

2. Self-defense is about controlling your body.

When you’ve decided you need to defend yourself, you need the skills to do it.

Those skills need to be emblazoned in your muscle memory.

You don’t want to forget to flip a safety or grab a handful of your shirt along with your gun.

That’s why you have to train.

So you have TOTAL self-control in the moment.

The moment when adrenaline is surging into your bloodstream.

Your fingers stop working normally.

All your eyes want to focus on is the knife in that guy’s hand.

If you don’t have self-control over your body…

You could FAIL the biggest test of your life.

And I don’t want that to happen to you.

That’s why USCCA Membership focuses on education AND training.

But there’s something else…

After you’re forced to defend yourself, something happens.

The police show up.

And they have two main jobs:

Make sure everyone is safe and preserve evidence for the prosecutor.

And here’s where you need even MORE self-control.

Most likely, you’ll want to get your side of the story out.

You’ll want to make sure they know YOU were the victim.

But just because you think you know what happened…

…doesn’t mean it will come out of your mouth that way.

Here’s why I say all this:

If you’re not prepared for a self-defense incident…

…it will PUNCH you in the mouth.

I want you to have everything you need to dodge that punch.

That’s why I created the USCCA.

World-class customer support and a private number for the Critical Response Team that you can call 24/7/365 in case you’re forced to pull the trigger in self-defense

LEGAL EFFORT OF THE WEEK–Could save a trillion bucks

28 energy leaders call for eliminating IRA subsidies—even ones they benefit from

This is the kind of integrity we need from industry—and from Congress.

–ALEX EPSTEIN

28 energy leaders just called for the elimination of all IRA subsidies—even ones that benefit their companies. This is the kind of integrity we need from industry—and from Congress.

Dear Chairman Smith and Chairman Crapo:

We, the undersigned American energy producers and investors, write to voice our principled support for full repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) energy subsidies, including subsidies that would appear to be to our firms’ and industry’s benefit. This is the only moral and practical path forward if we are to truly unleash American energy.

In recent weeks, Congress has been embroiled in battles over which, if any, of the IRA energy subsidies to cut. Lobbyists representing every corner of the energy landscape, including trade groups that many of us are part of, are jockeying to preserve their own piece of the pie, claiming that it is uniquely valuable.

We have oil lobbyists fighting to keep carbon capture and hydrogen subsidies, solar and wind lobbyists fighting to keep solar and wind subsidies, biofuel lobbyists fighting to keep biofuel subsidies, and EV lobbyists fighting to keep EV subsidies.

If this continues, we will likely preserve most if not all of the subsidies, which, deep down, everyone knows are not good for America.

The fundamental truth about subsidies is very simple. For any product, including energy, a subsidy is just a way of taking money from more efficient producers—and from taxpayers—and giving it to less efficient producers. The result is always less efficient production and therefore higher costs or lower quality for Americans.

The most egregious example of subsidies’ destructiveness is the IRA’s solar and wind subsidies, which pay electric utilities to invest much more money in solar and wind than they otherwise would, and thus much less in coal and gas than they otherwise would. Ultimately this means higher electricity prices and certainly less electricity reliability for Americans.

The IRA subsidies’ devastating harm to American energy is more than enough to compel us, as energy producers, to oppose them.

But their harm goes far beyond energy, as they will dramatically increase our debt and ultimately undermine every aspect of our economy.

A central Congressional priority is to curb the national debt during the upcoming budget reconciliation exercise. But according to credible estimates, the IRA will cost over $1 trillion over the next decade and trillions more after that. Worse, the IRA subsidies are expected to misallocate, into uncompetitive business and jobs, $3 trillion of investment by 2032 and $11 trillion by 2050. That’s a disaster for our economy, and for real job opportunities.

Clearly, the right thing to do is to eliminate all these subsidies. When lobbyists say that these subsidies are essential for America, what they’re really saying is that their backers have made investments in projects that have no near term cost-effectiveness and that are totally dependent on indefinite subsidies to sustain themselves.

Most people know the truth, but are afraid to say it due to institutional pressures. Too many Congressmen are afraid of alienating trade groups. Too many trade groups are afraid of alienating their large and vocal members who have made investments hoping for indefinite subsidies. All the while, too few are talking about freedom.

That’s why we invite our colleagues to do the right thing: level with the American people, say that we made a mistake, and that those who built subsidy-dependent businesses took on the kind of risk that we do not want to reward.

Keeping the IRA subsidies—despite all the evidence that they benefit only special interests at the expense of America—risks making our nation ever more like Europe, where industries do not succeed by providing the best value to consumers, but by providing the best favors to politicians. That’s not the America we want to work in.

LEGISLATIVE WIN OF THE WEEK–

We just scored a major win in Arkansas. Lawmakers pushed a bill that would have restricted local racetracks, but thousands spoke out, and the bill was pulled before it even got a hearing. Now, the fight moves to Washington—Congress must act to stop California’s gas car ban from going national.

Arkansas Tried to Kill Racing—We Shut It Down.

Arkansas lawmakers pushed HB 1564, a bill that would have saddled local racetracks with noise restrictions, insurance hikes, and event limits. But the racing community fought back—and won.

7,000+ letters flooded lawmakers’ inboxes.

400,000+ people saw our call to action with help from Arkansas native Alex Taylor (@alextaylorracing).

The pressure worked—the bill was pulled before it could even get a hearing.

This wasn’t just a win—it was proof. When we mobilize, we win. Now, we need that same energy for an even bigger fight.

Next Fight: Stop California’s Gas Car Ban

California’s unelected regulators are trying to dictate what you drive, and automakers are already lining up to bow down and kiss Gavin Newsom’s ring. If we don’t stop them, their gas car ban becomes national policy by default.

But Congress has the power to shut it down.

The clock is ticking—Congress has to act fast.

20,000+ advocates have spoken up—we need more.

If we don’t stop this, vehicle choice disappears.

ACT NOW: Tell Congress to vote YES on the CRA and block California’s overreach.

THURSDAY LEARNING FROM COMPETITION DISTRIBUTING– Wednesday Learning:

A George Wyman Excerpt

Excerpt taken from Motorcycle Timeline

It was on the day I left Cleveland, June 27, that my troubles began to come thick and fast. I started from Cleveland at 10am and had gone only a mile when the lacing holes in my driving belt gave way and I had to stop and re-lace. For the first five miles the road was fine, and then I came to a stretch where the road was being rebuilt and I had to walk for a mile and a half. After that I had a plank road for six miles, and then it was sandy for 30 miles, all the way to Geneva. From there to Couneaut, 22 miles, the road was good in places, with occasional stretches of clay and sand, through which it was hard going. It was a dreary day of travel through a pretty farming country where the ranchers seemed to be as heavy-witted as the cattle.

The belt broke five times during the afternoon, and the last time I fixed it I laced It with two inches of space between the ends in order to make it reach. I passed through town after town where I wondered what the people did for recreation. There was nothing for them to do after their day’s work but to walk around the block and then go to bed.

One thing I noticed is that it is a poor country for shoemakers for nearly everyone I saw, men, women, and children, were barefooted. It was plain that much of the country I saw was settled by immigrant farmers from Germany and other parts of Europe. I made only 75 miles this day. When I arrived in Conneaut. I got a piece of belting at a bicycle store and spliced my troublesome piece of driving leather. Then I discovered that the screws in the crankcase of the motor were all loose, so I put in some white lead and tightened them. It was so late by this time that I concluded to remain at Conneaut that night.

NEW WIMMER INTAKES COMING— I’d be happy to donate some of my intakes for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Hopefully the new one.

This bike is 12 inches long. Even the springer front end works lol. I still have that small poster with Valarie and the 5-ball racing team. I’ll reach out to him for the donation and will be with you soon as I’m sure this intake is ready. Again thank you!!

Little girl stops striding on her pink 12 Sport Balance Bike to checkout the handlebars. She’s wearing a helmet, closed toe shoes, and a bright pink elbow and knee pad set to match her bike.

3 Learning Guides

Strider grows with your little rider every step of the way. To help your kiddo (and you!) through the process, we provide free, step-by-step learning guides.

Little boy rounds a yellow cone on the racetrack and leads the Strider Cup race! He’s striding with speed on a custom yellow Strider 12 Sport Balance Bike with blue and yellow mix and match Ultralight Wheels. A pack of toddlers try to catch up to him.

2 Flintstone Feet

To make a Strider go, kids put their feet on the ground and push, just like Fred Flintstone! Stopping is just as easy as starting; they put their feet down. For young riders, success requires keeping it simple!

Tiny toddler riding a custom white Strider 12 Sport Balance Bike with white Ultralight Wheels lifts his feet onto the no-slip footrest to practice his balance on the paved bike trail.

Watch for that confidence boosting moment when your rider picks up their tiny feet — and tries the footrest! Your kiddo will build more courage with every ride.

AN OPEN LETTER FROM HAL2— From: Ann Baysinger Robinson

Subject: ex

Message Body:

Always Mrs. Robinson, Ann Robinson, Ann, or Hal2, but never an ex!  For some reason you like to use the title of “Ex”. I’m sure you mean well. but Harold and I were happily married, and then he died. We were not divorced. I may be lacking a sense of humor on this topic. Tell me if I am, and why if you like. Maybe you can change my mind?  Thanks. After all, my huband, Hal, was and still is a very famous cartoonist and I should have a good sense of humor to match. I won’t let go and don’t want to let go on this topic. It’s important to me. Still nuts about my man!  Always young, happy. and free.

Best wishes, Bandit.

–Mrs. Hal Robinson

AMA Supports Re-Introduction of the REPAIR Act

The American Motorcyclist Association endorses H.R. 1566, the Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act (REPAIR Act) and urges Congress to pass this legislation.

Originally proposed in February 2023 by Representative Neal Dunn (R-FL-02), this newly-introduced version includes changes negotiated with legislators and stakeholders, including the AMA. Despite attempts in Congress to exclude motorcycles, the AMA successfully preserved bill language allowing the right to repair motorcycles.

WHAT’S NEXT–Holy shit, I wish I knew. Everyday is slammed with wild projects.

I helped Panhead John install his electronic ignition in the old circuit breaker case and we timed the bastard. It wasn’t easy, but we got the job done.

I reached out to the famous Irish Rich to give me a hand with the installation of the rear head on the Salt Torpedo after it was inspected at Bonneville. He brought over his finely tuned torque wrenches and went to work.

The Redhead picked up the gas tank from TNT body where Nikki’s husband cleared it.

Atomic Bob should be proud of his artwork on the tank.

Danial James brought me the original of the Salt Torpedo and gave me a massive Birthday Present.

Ride fast and free forever!

Niche magazine segment catering to such specific hobbies and lifestyle as gardening or golf or motorcycling etc are very unique to developed nations of NA and Europe. Other nations have a few or have imported ones –but there is no real sales, no actual profit, no advertising by publisher, etc. Maybe print, radio, TV, rival social media, et al will move to Instagram–the future of all publishing.
